    Hey Guys! Clarification on the Vice City part of the video:
    Vice City on the PS2 originally released with a game breaking bug, that if you saved at the Cherry Poppers Ice Cream Company, there a good chance it will corrupt your save.
    Rockstar did fix this with future revision of the PS2 verison. This lead many people to have all of their progress gone hours into the game, simply by saving it.
    When i made the video, that save issue + comparing it to the OG Xbox port that released after was my rational behind it.
    Thank you for letting me know, as it only helps me improve and want to become better at making content! ❤
    Here is the article that covers the glitch:

      Yup, and that wasn't the only save corrupting bug. I'm not sure how many there actually were but for the whole trilogy on PS2 I used to stack my saves, at least two for each game just in case. I played San Andreas on 360 some years later and had no save issues there but the backwards compatibility was sketchy at times, with a few graphical glitches.

    C'mon, man. You're running your backups through the PS2's USB 1.1 speeds which are far slower than the disc drive. That explains the 3-minute loading times you kept complaining about, and the constant hitching in L.A. Rush. For realistic loading times you should burn your games to DVD-Rs in ESR format for use with FreeDVDBoot, or just use real copies.
    (Also consider cleaning the lens for this!)

      @VexAcer 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +27

      Yeah the loading in L.A. Rush is probably a failsafe that doesn't happen in normal gameplay (AKA an actual disc on a good drive).
      Other open world games like NFS Most Wanted have it too, but you wouldn't ever trigger it normally unless you have an insanely scratched disc/bad drive or in this case use something super slow like USB 1.1. The alternative is having no backup loading screen which means the player will fall through the unloaded world (Starsky & Hutch has this).

    Vice City was literally built for PS2. The game suffers from a crapton of bugs on Xbox/PC like transparency issues, missing map props, GTA3 leftover assets and poorer audio quality. Just because the PS2 had interlaced image, doesn't make it a bad version.
    RE4 is another one that isn't bad, again, the GC (and Xbox) were much better at hiding jaggies due to the larger RAM that offered superior progressive scan image. The only other difference is color palette.
    Mafia is more of console VS PC as mentioned, rather than PS2 VS all other systems.
    The other games are correct. I'd say the games that suffered the most were the cross-gen licensed games, a lot of them were rebuilt for PS2 and Wii or just have straight up missing content when compared to the 360/PS3. They wanted to support the PS2 for long and after 2006 we really started seeing some stinkers.

    • @blitzstrk0
      @blitzstrk0 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Colors are off, the textures are blurry, the framerate isn't consistent, the audio is more compressed, you just blatantly ignore the missing effects, and the cutscenes are cinematics instead of in game and look worse as a result. Face it, you're in denial. RE4 was a bad port and the worst one at the time besides the original PC port, but at least that was moddable.
      "Mafia is more of console VS PC as mentioned, rather than PS2 VS all other systems."
      The purpose of this video isn't "PS2 VS all other consoles" it's just about PS2 ports of games that are worse. Which the PS2 version of that game is, even compared to the Xbox.

    • @Manic_Panic
      @Manic_Panic 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@blitzstrk0 Relax you're very stressed out. The textures are not blurrier, it's the different lighting that doesn't suit the game's artstyle. They did make the audio more crunchy though which is silly considering how much more storage the DVD disc has, a classic Capcom oversight.
      The Mafia port isn't any worse than the original Xbox version though unless you're talking about progressive scan support.

      Ever played Crash Bandicoot Wrath of Cortex?
      It has loading screens as an exclusive PS2 feature. The GameCube and Xbox always loaded faster than it did.
      Same with the Saturn and PS3, it was harder to code for, so optimisation and load times suffered compared to other ports of their respective generations.

    • @sablikxl
      @sablikxl 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

      @@BlueEyedVibeCheckerYeah, there were games with ridiculously long loading times. But you can't ignore the fact that running games from an USB stick on PS2 just makes it even worse. And god, trying to run games like GTA San Andreas (that constantly need to load a lot of stuff during gameplay) from an USB stick makes them almost unplayable. I wouldn't be surprised if the issue with loading screens during races in LA Rush would be caused by runnning the game from USB as similar issue occurs in NFS Most Wanted and NFS Carbon (when you are in a race parts of the map need a longer time to load, making the game hang up for a moment before the next part of a map loads).

    The reason the PS2 version of RE4 didn't quite look as good as the Gamecube version had nothing to do with the extra content. It was simply due to the fact that the PS2 wasn't as powerful as the Gamecube. The textures were sharper on the Gamecube and therefore looked slightly better.

    Here’s two poor PS2 ports I have.
    Sonic Unleashed: While not as sloppily made port like the PS2 ports of Sonic Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog and certainly is at best playable, it still leaves a lot to be desired. It is a direct port of the Nintendo Wii version and oh boy. The graphics looked horrendous to the point where it looks worse than the original Dreamcast version of Sonic Adventure from a decade prior, the compression on the pre rendered cutscenes looked noticeable, the load times can get quite long and the game doesn’t even have 16:9 widescreen support. In 2008 where Widescreen TVs were becoming the norm. If you can look past those faults, then the PS2 port of Sonic Unleashed is at best playable. But at the same time, there’s much better options to play the game.
    Secret Agent Clank: I’ve never played the PS2 ports of both Ratchet & Clank Size Matters and Jak & Daxter The Lost Frontier so I can’t really comment. I have played Secret Agent Clank on PS2 and oh boy it was a mess. The load times are so horrendous that they can almost be as bad as Sonic 06’s load times as they came take up to around 30 seconds and they happen when you boot up the game, load your save file and select a level. The compression on the Pre Rendered cutscenes was also a joke as the audio sounded muffled and the pixelisation was atrocious. Not only that, but I recall some glitches in the game. Yeah just stay well away from this horrid port. It’s a shame that although Ratchet & Clank helped make the PlayStation 2 a household name, their last outing on the system went out on such a sour note.

Anyone who calls it a bad port is probably too young to have experienced it in its own time, and are speaking wholly without context.

    I remember back when I was in high school my friend talked me into buying RE4 on PS2. I played it for 5 minutes and felt motion sick and couldn't get the hang of the controls so rather than returning it, I just left it on the shelf to collect dust. Probably 6 or so years later, I had watched my brother playing the remaster and I was actually getting into it watching him. Decided to say fuck it and give it another shot. I played through 2 or 3 chapters then bought it on PS4. What an amazing game man, honestly. My friend was right.

    Resident Evil 4 on PS2 was a bit of a miracle port given how closely it matched the Gamecube version, especially given how it was tailor made for Nintendo's hardware. The same would apply to Just Cause and Splinter Cell, since these worked to the strengths of top-end PC hardware of the era, the fact that either are on PS2 is amazing to consider. I wouldn't give Deus Ex on PS2 a hardtime either since it is a complex PC game being compacted onto a machine with barely any RAM. The loading times and performance can be disappointing but Deus Ex is still well worthwhile on PS2 due to the scale of the world and writing in general. LA Rush, nor Rocky, were ports, they were simply rushed to market so played glitchy as a result. Spider-Man 3 and Call of Duty 3 were just disappointing games.
    Mafia, Max Payne 1 and 2 all deserved better PlayStation 2 conversions.
    Fun fact about Wipeout Pulse: It is a European-only PS2 port, and sells for crazy money now. I never knew it had a memory card breaking bug though, I remember Jak X having something similar and that was enough to put me off playing it.
    Your issue with FMVs on Mercenaries 2 is purely memory stick related. The read/write rates are not very fast via USB on PS2.

    Aside from the cross generation releases like Mercenaries 2, LA RUSH and Just Case, all other games are decent considering the context of release. You mention that the PC version run better, of course it does, but would require a PC that cost 4 to 5 times the price of a PS2. Also, the low resolution and interlancing of the PS2 version does not look bad on a CRT TV of the time.

    Speaking of RE4, I know that the initial PC version release was terrible, no shading etc. However, I remember installing something called "RE4+", which was a version patched both officially and by fans. Combined with a PS pad, I found that version to be excellent - however, it's hard to find any info about it these days, you just get the damn remake with any search. I still have it burned on a DVD and will probably just install that if I ever feel like playing it again.

    Yeah, the PS2 had a completely different rendering pipeline than PC or Xbox. Games required ether a heavily reworked engine or an entirely different game engine to even be ported to the PS2 in most circumstances. That being said, games originally developed exclusively for the PS2 hardware often ran quite well. Xbox versions of games often had better frame rates if nothing else, which sometimes was disappointing because things like the textures retained their PS2 limitations even though the Xbox was capable of much higher res textures.

    USB loading is trash and you're limited to USB 1.1! If you're playing on a fat PS2, get a network adapter and put a HDD in there!
    If you're playing on a Slim PS2 either network load your games or use a MX4SIO, you're gonna see way better load times.
    Your Mercenaries 2 footage shows why USB devices sucks for loading PS2 games unless they're simple like DDR for example.

    I was really surprised to see Grand Theft Auto: Vice City mentioned considering that not only is the Playstation 2 version the best out of all versions because it has the most licensed music before songs started getting removed in future releases, but also because the game literally launched exclusively for the Playstation 2 back in the day. Half-Life for PS2 was also pretty solid, but the audio quality was really bad for some reason.
