    Wish I got a dollar for every time he said "structural integrity".. None the less, seemed like a pretty darn good job to me. Well done my friend. Thanks for bringing us along.

    How you only have 4,500 followers boggles my mind. Won't mention any names, but this content has been seriously high quality compared to a number of other channels recently...

    Good to see it saved and not scraped. You dont normally see rust like that on the e30's well done

    Wish you were in VA, i've got plenty of holes in my E30 that you could keep practicing on. Great job man and very informative.

    Looked like great work! Nice timing too - need to take my E30 to task on a few of it's holes, especially in the rear left arch :(

    Loving the videos!!!! All the time lapses are amazing and you dont cut corners as opposed to most people who do their "restorations" keep em coming!!!! Oh and p.s. get yourself a nice rolling cushion seat it'll make your life a BUNCH easier especially with the car sitting on jack stands like that. I'd be all over it saves my back and knees ect while I'm doing brake jobs on cars and stuff or even just a paint correction. I promise you won't regret it! You owe it to yourself man! A creeper too!!!!

    • @PracticalEnthusiast
      @PracticalEnthusiast  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! I actually have a rolling seat and a creeper, but sometimes the only way to get the angle or leverage I need is to just lay on the ground. It definitely wears you out haha.

    New subscriber, amazing job man! Dedicated to getting it done, nice work! I had an E328, and a 2 door 325 both 86/87. Great cars, but lots of maintenance. When you get to removing the water pump it's a pita. You have to remove the radiator and all of that to get to the part. Best of Luck. I'm definitely following along~ :)

    Good work. If you can get your hands on a anvil or a large vice you’ll be able to shape the metal before tacking it up.

    Very nice work! I am undertaking similar repairs on the e30 I just picked up. What gauge of sheet metal are you using to make these patches?

  • @leonsletterbox2013
    @leonsletterbox2013 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Did you check the rest of the chassis box section by the perch pad, i hit mine with a pic hammer, like you said in a previous video " it was only the under sealer that kept it together "

    Great video, love the music! You've inspired me to do my own metal patching instead of using Bondo. What gauge sheet metal did you use?

    • @PracticalEnthusiast
      @PracticalEnthusiast  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of the metal I used was 20 and 18 gauge. I went a little thicker with 16 gauge on the spring perch and jack pad areas. I went to my local metal supply store and they had scraps of all gauges for pennies on the dollar. I'd definitely recommend going that route and picking up an assortment!

  • @DustinVang

    What type of welder are you using?

  • @Lightning799
    @Lightning799 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello from the other side of I-70. Love the video, love the series. My 318iS has rust in the same places but opposite sides. Have a few questions for you:
    What gauge metal did you use for patch panels?
    Did you take any precautions such as pulling the ECU or windows?
    Thanks

    • @PracticalEnthusiast
      @PracticalEnthusiast  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there! I used 18 gauge for more structural areas like the spring perch, and 20 gauge on external bodywork. You will want to disconnect the battery and unplug the ECU.

  • @FIVEVEEZEE
    @FIVEVEEZEE 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Peter, was this your first attempt at welding as well? I have a 4Runner with similar rust that is driving me mad. I can't find reasonable body work that I trust so this is something I need to tackle myself.

    • @PracticalEnthusiast
      @PracticalEnthusiast  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This wasn't my first welding attempt, but it was my first go at welding metal this thin. The upside to autobody welding is that the metal is thin and you don't need a super high powered welder. I recommend giving it a try yourself on the 4Runner!

    • @FIVEVEEZEE
      @FIVEVEEZEE 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PracticalEnthusiast That's good to know. What welder do you use? I'm torn between a cheaper Harbor Freight MIG or waiting for a good deal on a name brand like Hobart/Miller/Lincoln. Being in the rustbelt I fully expect to need a welder in the future anyway so I'd might as well get a good unit.

    • @PracticalEnthusiast
      @PracticalEnthusiast  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FIVEVEEZEE I went with a Hobart Handler 140 simply because I like the idea of having parts and product support if the need arises. I'm using C25 gas with .030 wire and the setup has been great for auto rust repair.

    Great job! Still have your turbo toyota pickup?!

    • @PracticalEnthusiast
      @PracticalEnthusiast  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm afraid not. There were a couple of reasons for the decision to sell it on (Which I now regret, looking back. It was such a rare find. Anyway...): 1. I needed to clear up some space and money to take on a new project. 2. It was, quite honestly, too nice. I know that sounds crazy, but it's true. If I were to try and use it as a truck, or even use it during the winter months in Kansas (salted roads), it would deteriorate quickly and I would feel terrible about it. I hope it lives on for a long time with its new caring owner.

    • @rcdudes123
      @rcdudes123 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bummer :(
      I understand what you are saying though. Hard to own a truck especially a toyota 4x4 without wanting to use it as a 4x4. Have you ever owned a first gen 4runner?!

    • @PracticalEnthusiast
      @PracticalEnthusiast  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@rcdudes123 actually my parents have a first gen 4Runner ('88), but the body is pretty rusty. Maybe I'll work on that one next!
