Stefanie, thank you for doing this. Most Camino packing checklists are pretty much the same. You have made a few very unique choices so people will realize there are options. Secondly your emphasis on earth friendly products is great. Absolutely agree with your opinion on Patagonia products. Excellent designs, ethical manufacturing and overall commitment to the planet is worth the extra cost. I have been a fan since the ‘80’s (I know I’m old) and have products that I have had for decades. Thank you for another great video.
Another alternative for water, use a small dry bag. i used a 1.5L, and clip it onto the shoulder strap. It easily fit a 600ml bottle of drink, a few muesli bars for snacks, and a little extra room (rolled up brieley book or an umbrella). Easy to reach, easy to unclip if needed. Worked well.
Very interesting and individual approach, good on you. We all walk our own Camino. Two things that really caught me- one, your thoughtful approach to nature ( purchasing habits, pee rag) - good on you! Second, talking about taking your Dad’s ashes. Respect. Peter 🇳🇿
For all the people out there in the market for micro-fiber towels: they are usually made from plastics, but there is light weight alternatives like cloth diapers or organic cotton travel towels from a brand called 'valleys & hills' (not sponsored, I just got one myself, but honestly also haven't tried it yet). Just wanted to say a more eco-friendly alternative exists. Since Stefanie cares about it too, I thought a few of you out there might care as well.
I don't know about in the states but I can buy small woven bags in the supermarket near the veg stands that are intended for buying loose onions etc. They are a useful size maybe a foot square with a drawstring top, and I'm looking at these for other purposes too as I don't like plastic bags either. All I was thinking is that you're going to find it difficult locating small items in your rucksack unless they're in bags. I use packing cubes and find that if I don't pack them full to the limits - leaving some room - then it works better than leaving items loose as I'm always loosing stuff in my bags unless I have order.
Ah yes, I love that idea! I’ve decided that next time I’ll definitely bring a canvas tote for my day bag. Luckily my backpack has a lot of different pockets and compartments, so I never had trouble finding things without packing cubes. I did use a couple of small pouches to separate things like underwear and electronic chords. I think I only needed a plastic bag for my shower bars and eventually my toothpaste after it exploded in my front pocket multiple times 😂
Such an interesting video! 🥰 So glad that you're back on TH-cam, Stefanie. You were missed! Wishing you the smoothest Camino possible. 😊 I live in Portugal and the temperatures in Spain are very similar. It's extremely hot atm during the day and night, but in late August and September it tends to get a bit chilly during the night, so the Mexican blanket is definitely a great option!
Thanks for taking the trouble of going through all your stuff for us - very useful! I know it was a while ago, but do you remember how much it all weighed, including the backpack?
Hi Stefanie, I finished walking the Camino Francés on 25 July (just over 4 weeks ago). I first thought of doing it on 1 June and left New Zealand on 16 June so I had little time to prepare. Amongst others I watched your videos and I want to say they were a big help. I only wore Keen Newport H2 sandals, no socks - fantastic. I have just decided to walk it again next year and leave a week or so later to catch the sunflowers in bloom, and am considering following your lead this time and wearing Chacos - were they as good on your 2nd Camino? I found the Keens superb although slightly too narrow for my feet (I often walk barefoot, and might walk parts of it barefoot next time). I love it. So … are you going to do another? Maybe the Primitivo or Portuguese? I want to walk the Francés again because while I walked the whole way, I want to stay in different towns and albergues, learn some Spanish before I go so I can communicate with the locals better (which I loved doing despite the language barrier). Take care, Alex
Hi Lance! I actually didn’t get a chance to weigh my bag before I left and now I have added a couple things after arriving in Barcelona. I think a good rule to stick to is about 10% of your body weight. Hope you guys have a great Camino! ✨🤗
I wish everyone would stop leaving their tissues behind. I don't understand how people can just take a dump right on the edge of the road instead of going out a little further into the field or into the bushes. You see this all along the Camino, someone squats down and takes a dump right there on the edge of the road. Seriously? The worst is when you've been walking for 5 mi on a hot day with no shade and finally there's an oasis, a single tree casting shade and when you get there everyone has decided to use that shady spot as their toilet, like their biggest fear is the government satellites seeing them pee. You can't just squat anywhere else? You had miles of open field, tall wheat fields where you could hide and no one would see you or what you've left behind. And yet with miles and miles of open space, they choose to do it right in the only shady spot you're going to see in a 10 mile stretch.
At least bring one of those little shovel things and bury your poop. Put the tissue in a baggie and pitch it when you come to a trash can. The Camino is a sacred pilgrimage and should be treated with some respect.
I'm doing my first camino in a month and wondered how you went about using the electrolytes? Did you put it you water bladder? Love you videos and your beautiful spirit. Thanks, all the way from New Zealand
When flying was your bag a carry on or did you have to check it. I am planning my 2nd Camino. I brought the wrong backpack and am searching for a new bag
Hi Debbie! It definitely did protect me from sunburn! This was my main use for it. However it only covered my head, face and shoulders. I had shorts on and my legs definitely burned 😅
hey Stefanie I find a walking stick or fashion a branch, that I carry for stability when walking down steep grades or up, as well as protection against dog's or other animals, girl's vs guy's backpacks are so different, i ship other personal items to Ivar Rekve at Casa Ivar, Santiago for collection post Camino muxia, pack weight is 12/14kgs,😀 on my 4th camino Del Norte 2023, Buen Camino
Thank you!! I didn’t bring a brush, I just combed with my fingers. And I used bar shampoo and conditioner. I probably won’t use bar conditioner again because it just wasn’t enough, so I recommend buying conditioner when you arrive in Spain! 🤗
Yes it did! It fit: phone, passport, battery bank, small camera, and all cash and cards. The only thing it didn’t fit that I wish it could: the Pilgrim’s passport (or credentials) that you need when signing in at albergues!
As far as the sandals, one question. I have been rucking since September '23 and went from boots to sneakers to sandals and found nothing is more comfortable than sandals. However, the one thing I noticed is that these little pebbles get kicked up by the back of the sandals and imbed themselves under my feet, and I walk over pavement, causing me to stop periodically and slip my sandal off to get them out. I cant imagine being barefoot, as I wear shorty socks, and this happening when walking a great amount of time over unpaved roads, like you do on the Camino. Are you able to just shake them out or do you have to stop and slip them off to get them out? BTW, very informative video, thanks for all the info.
Hi! Thanks for the question! I do sometimes get the tiniest little pebbles caught in between, and they’re always sharp 😂 but yes, I’ve always been able to shake them out! I don’t think I’ve ever taken my Chacos off on the trail. Hope this helps!
Thanks for this video! You came from heaven in right time for me. I am curently trying to find the best backpack for myself. It seems like this will suit me perfectly. To be honest, this bag is not as popular as Osprey Fairview 40l, which is why I didn't know it exists
Helpful video. Thanks! May I suggest you think about removing the background music? It distracts from your message. Thanks for considering and Buen Camino!
Nice video, indeed! But... too much stuff, IMHO. I'm always very sad to see overloaded staggering Pilgrims on the track and desperate people in albergues looking for things that are lost in the bowels of an enormous backpack. 😒 In the first Camino we all carry too much stuff, anyway. And it's a big lesson, when back at home to split in three categories what we brought with us: A) things that were used often B) things that were seldom used: were they really necessary or were they only in the pack just to calm our anxieties? C) Never used: beside the First Aid Kit, in next Camino leave the rest at home.
I actually did a gear review video just recently, and went over the topics you mentioned :) This was my 2nd Camino and every single thing was put to use, with the exception of two small objects, so it was the perfect pack for me! It was super light, never hurt me, never lost anything haha! I actually love the feeling of carrying everything I need on my back. It felt very spiritual to me this time. But of course, everyone is different :)
So true 😅. My first Camino backpack was overloaded with unnecessary things I have rarely or never used and I based my list on many videos from TH-cam. Truth is that you need to make your own journey and your own mistakes because everyone has different needs. I took too many clothes and too many toiletries, also way too many frist aid. Many things I didn't even use and was missing other things that I had to buy on the way. I'm getting ready for a short trip in beginning of May from Sarria which I did along my full route last year, but this time I take friend with me to show her a bit of Camino. This time my list will be more accurate and much smaller ☺️

You are such a sweet soul , bringing your dad ❤️
Patagonia is the best! I loved that you are bringing what works for you and not just pack what’s recommended from others. Well done! Buen Camino.
thanks so much! :)
I loved watching your video. It is so sweet that you’re able to do this last trip with your dad. Sending love.
Thank you so much ❤️
Great tips thankyou , just to add your dad would have been very proud of what you’ve accomplished well done and you have another subscriber 🎉

Thank you for sharing! I plan on doing my first Camino de Santiago next year in the hotter months and this is really helpful!
Walked the entire camino in Chaco sandals without socks, and NO blisters! R-E-S-P-E-C-T!! The Hurtado way.
Hahah thanks Patrick! 🥳
Excellent tips and recommendations!
Glad they helped! 🧚🏼
Very interesting and individual approach, good on you. We all walk our own Camino.

Aw, thank you Peter!
Stefanie, i think you would love the book let my people go surfing by the founder of patagonia

Stefani, beautiful & kind lady, your tips help to plan my September Camino~from 59yrs nurse 💕
Aww thank you so much!! I'm so excited for you, hope you have a great time! Buen Camino :)
Great video and tips! Thank you and have fun!

I do everything in quality flip flops, I love them . And same here with feet issues and flip flops work 👍 great

You are so sweet, thank you!!! 🥹🥲 I’m a little concerned about the heat, but sooo happy to be back. Sending love to Portugal ✨
Super good walkthrough on what to pack for the camino! 🥾
Thank you so much! ❤️ Buen Camino
Love my last swab!!
Just found your channel and love your videos ❤ I want to do the Camino next year and your videos have been super informative ☺️
So great to hear, thank you!!
Thanks for taking the trouble of going through all your stuff for us - very useful! I know it was a while ago, but do you remember how much it all weighed, including the backpack?
Love your videos. One of the best. Noticed an Oscar Wilde book on your bookcase. great fan myself.
I have that pack too! I noticed the same thing with hip pocket things. I make people zip it back for me

Love your little tote bag!! Where did you get that? Love your videos!!
Hi Cindy! My dad got it for me forever ago, but you can checkout Baggu! They have reusable bags just like this in such great sizes and patterns :)
PS have you tried Stasher bags over ziplocks?
My wife Cristina wants to know how much your pack weighs. We start from Saint Jean on the 29th of August. Buen Camino.
Hi Lance! I actually didn’t get a chance to weigh my bag before I left and now I have added a couple things after arriving in Barcelona. I think a good rule to stick to is about 10% of your body weight. Hope you guys have a great Camino! ✨🤗
hi! which model of Chacos are you using excatly? I think this is great idea and I'm gonna do it same way :)
Thank you for interesting information. Is your mexican blanket made of wool?
Where did you get your scarf its so pretty!
Ahh I'm sorry, I got it at a flea market in France about 15 years ago. But any soft scarf will do!
I wish everyone would stop leaving their tissues behind. Haha I totally feel you on the shade thing 😂
I managed a 560Km camino without having to go behind a bush.
Quite easily done by financially supporting local cafes and timing your fluid intake.
Pray fr common sense fr humans- that is ridiculous!
Luv n light to all♡
At least bring one of those little shovel things and bury your poop. Put the tissue in a baggie and pitch it when you come to a trash can. The Camino is a sacred pilgrimage and should be treated with some respect.
Awesome why why anyone do that thanks 😊
How did the Chacos do in the rain?
OMG, so helpful! Thank you!
I'm so glad! 😊
You motivated me, can you share how you get to the starting point of Camino ( I’m from Arizona) and how to get back to the airport, thank you
How much did your backpack weighted?
I'm doing my first camino in a month and wondered how you went about using the electrolytes? Did you put it you water bladder? Love you videos and your beautiful spirit. Thanks, all the way from New Zealand
When flying was your bag a carry on or did you have to check it. I am planning my 2nd Camino. I brought the wrong backpack and am searching for a new bag
I brought it as a carry on! 🤗 this meant I didn’t bring any liquids, but I think they’re better to buy in Spain anyway. Buen camino!
Thank you for your camino videos! I'm wondering if the umbrella protected you from sunburn? I'm trying to decide if I need one with spf. Thank you!
Hi Debbie! It definitely did protect me from sunburn! This was my main use for it. However it only covered my head, face and shoulders. I had shorts on and my legs definitely burned 😅
@StefanieHurtado Thank you! I ordered one from your link. It's the most compact one I could find. Thanks again!
I took bladder and straw broke first day 😂. So I used plastic water bottle whole trip and carried bladder to refill bottle.
Oh that’s a great idea!!
Hi Stephanie! Great video!! What style of chacos did you take?
Hi, thank you! All my gear is linked in the description 🤗 They are the Z cloud chacos
hey Stefanie I find a walking stick or fashion a branch, that I carry for stability when walking down steep grades or up, as well as protection against dog's or other animals, girl's vs guy's backpacks are so different, i ship other personal items to Ivar Rekve at Casa Ivar, Santiago for collection post Camino muxia, pack weight is 12/14kgs,😀 on my 4th camino Del Norte 2023, Buen Camino
That’s awesome! These are such great tips!! Buen Camino for your Norte 💫
With your vlog camera, did you take lots of memory cards with it? What sort of file size had you accumulated by the end of the trip?
I have lots of hair too. What did you do about a brush/shampoo/ conditioner? Thank you. Great video.
Thank you!! I didn’t bring a brush, I just combed with my fingers. And I used bar shampoo and conditioner. I probably won’t use bar conditioner again because it just wasn’t enough, so I recommend buying conditioner when you arrive in Spain! 🤗
And you put nothing else in your hair? The frizz on my hair would be just unmanageable even in hair ties
How did you go about phone service?? I leave for the Camino in 8 days
I just used the WiFi at albergues and cafes! 🤗
Love your video! Thanks so much for sharing. How much did your bag weigh and any items you didn't use, now that your Camino is over?
Aw thanks Kathy!! I’m going to film a video in the next couple days with a full update on my gear and how each item worked 🤗
Love the patagonia hip pack. Did it fit the passport and cell phone?
Yes it did! It fit: phone, passport, battery bank, small camera, and all cash and cards. The only thing it didn’t fit that I wish it could: the Pilgrim’s passport (or credentials) that you need when signing in at albergues!

Stephanie, which Chaco style shoe did u use on your Camino?
I had the Z cloud in metallic rose 🤗
Can you post what scarf you have-brand, size, material, where purchased… Thnks! Starting Camino Frances Sept 2.
I got my scarf at a market in France, so I have no idea. Any thin, summery scarf will do!
I tried the chacos but they did not fit my feet. I ended up with TEVAs
I've heard Tevas are very comfortable!! I hope they work well for you 🤗
Do you have too be wacc...to get in too the country or where do you need it 😢
Thanks for this video! You came from heaven in right time for me. I am curently trying to find the best backpack for myself. It seems like this will suit me perfectly. To be honest, this bag is not as popular as Osprey Fairview 40l, which is why I didn't know it exists
Aw yay! I love Osprey bags! 34L feels like more than enough room to me :) Hope you like it!!
did your credential fit in your hip pack?
They did not fit in this hip pack! I ended up buying a larger (I think 2L) one for my next Camino to fit them because you def want them handy 🤗
Some people call it a bum bag 🙂
haha i like it!
English people call it that.......
❤❤❤
🤗
Helpful video. Thanks! May I suggest you think about removing the background music? It distracts from your message. Thanks for considering and Buen Camino!
I can't remove it, but noted!
#chacocult
I like the pee pad!!
😂 am I weird for watching this, even though I have no intention of doing a Camino. 😂
hahaha maybe a little, but hiii, glad you're here 🤗 maybe if you watch enough Camino stuff you'll change your mind 😉
Nice video, indeed!

The background music is so unnecessary.
Lmao I genuinely can’t even hear it 🤷🏻♀️ I put it in to cover the buzzing sound of my AC unit
too much
