Hello! Love your video and your suggested packing style ❤ I have a couple questions.. 1. Does the Ridge Merino Wool hooded top shrink at all in the wash? 2. Did you find yourself needing a head lamp or any kind of light? I saw some other people's videos that had them for the early morning starts but you didn't mention any in your video so figured I'd get your thoughts on that. Thanks, Mary
@@makamite876 Hi Mary, those are great questions. I always wash my wool in cold water and never put it in the dryer, so I've never had shrinkage. The few times I have washed hot (for bed bugs), I didn't have issues but I did NOT put it in the dryer. I didn't use a headlamp since I have my phone for a light when needed. I don't like walking in the dark for more than a few minutes, so it's not an issue for me. The few times we had to walk in the dark for a heatwave, I put my phone in my waist pack and it worked great as a makeshift light.
@@DaysWeSpendthanks for the reviews, I am leaving with my daughter for the Camino ingles is a month, she is 13 but taller than me, I am a tiny 5 feet person. So I appreciate your comment on the backpack and size. Since it’s quite an expense buying two backpacks, I wanted to understand what is the difference between the pro and the regular backpack, it’s just about the fabric, do you know? I read they have the same technology and waterproof, thinking of going for the cheaper non pro version. Thanks
@@Franciuk I think the difference is just the fabric. The pro version fabric is more durable but that's not necessary on the Camino since you aren't scrambling through brambles. If you get them, let me know how you like them.
Beginning to explore my first Camino hike and am researching prep. Yours is the best resource I've viewed thus far. Thank you for this insightful and practical guide.
I hiked the Camino Frances in 2018, planning my next one. This is the BEST Camino video I've ever seen. Totally covered everything! Awesome, awesome, AWESOME!
Thank you so much for this video. You have re confirm what someone told me 3 times today. Pack only what you need and then minimise even more. ❤ Buen Camino. I love the towel suggestion.
Thank you. This is exactly what I was looking for. Not only do you share what you packed, you gave justifications and explanations for your decisions. Including the final packed weight was helpful also for this noob. you gave insight and additional information I didn’t know I needed. I am also a 5’3” short-torso gal and that backpack suggestion is perfect. Excellent job!
Finally, a practical packing list. Someone after my own heart. I plan on using a 25 liter pack for my Camino Frances in May of 2025. Most of the vids I’ve watched have people carrying 40 plus liter packs.
I watched every second of this video. So helpful! I am also 5'1" and try to keep my pack around 10lb no matter what. Many new tips and products here for me. Thank you! 😊
Thanks so much for this. I’ve backpacked before, but only in the bush - so this is a very different trip. This is a really helpful resource! Happy Trails to everyone 🙏
Sun hoodies and Merino wool are both amazing, but I've had the same experience wearing a Merino wool sun hoodie. I've since switched to synthetic because it dries quicker, breathes better, and lasts longer. Currently I use the OR Echo (by far the most popular one out there) for most trips and the REI Sahara Shade which is a bit thicker (SP50 compared to SPF15-20 for the Echo) and I like better for colder trips. Topo Ultraventure is the perfect Camino shoe. I did my first two Caminos in more minimalist shoes, but I found that for road walks and cobblestones they killed my feet. The Ultraventure works great on both trail and road, and has a lot more cushion. Also, I wanted to let you know that thanks to your old gear list I got the same hat you did and it's been amazing through ~1000 miles of hiking on the PCT and Camino del Norte.
Sunday Afternoon hats FTW! That one has been on three Caminos with me. It's still going strong! Thanks for your recommendations. I'm definitely going too look into them. The footbox of the Topos look like they would fit my foot shape better, too. So I'm not the only one with the hoodie issue! Funny thing, I always hike in a Merino wool t-shirt and I've never had that issue with them. Maybe the sun hoodie versions are more fragile?
@@DaysWeSpend One more thing I would recommend after watching more videos, actually, it's the most vital thing I carried on all three Caminos: a sun umbrella! It's amazing, rain or shine.
Wow! This is an excellent video! As a mountaineer who constantly re-evaluate everything I bring with spreadsheet of each item's weight, I found some helpful tips!
I did the Camino at the same time.. Good advice:) Im impressed you traveled with just 2 sets of clothes! I felt like a third set of clothes was necessary.
What a great presentation you gave, Laney! I have watched and read so many things about walking the Camino and your packing list was the best; so very thorough about what you took and why; thank you! I’m thrilled to save your video so that when I do walk, hopefully in 2025, I will know what to look for from your list. 😊
Super, super helpful video. Irish Blessings to you. I have a replacement knee and plan to test my resilience on the Camino Francés from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Pamplona. Finding the right knee supports is a priority. Again Thank you.
Thank you for this wonderful video. I'm also short bodied so this has been really informative! I gained 5 stone in 7 years because I was waiting for 2 x TKR. I am training and eating well (28lb lost so far). I plan to walk in Sept 2025 and I am so excited ❤ Looking forward to watching all your videos❤
That’s a great video, there’s some good tips here that even as a male you can use, the merino wool pieces are a good insight would never have looked at that before. I’ve downloaded your packing list and visited the sites I can use, there are men’s sections and if I can’t get the actual items here in the U.K. there will be alternatives. Particularly impressed with the merino hoodie but the rest is just as good. I’m a hopeless overpacker! you’ve sorted me out on that one. Thank you.
Thanks for the tips! We are exploring going sept/oct ‘24 and appreciate all the knowledge imparted from experienced pilgrims. I appreciate the long sleeve reviews because I’m also a fan of them. I discovered bamboo wear and love it and was curious about the merino wool ones.
Thanks a lot for the tip. Me and hubby are doing the shortest version from Sarria on April 1-24, andyour video helps me a lot. I have everything and I love the hearing sign I do not like when bikers pass me so close. We are staying on private rooms (hubby demands) so I may not need some of your accessories.
5.15 kg! Great! I'm amazed it was so light, since there were lots of things you carried that I never carry and my base weight is usually about 5.5 kg. Maybe being a somewhat large man makes my individual clothing items heavier than yours. I'm glad I do my pilgrimage walking these days in Japan, where a lot of things you carry are unnecessary. Yoi o-mairi-o! (Buen Camino in Japanese)
Thanks for watching. Being a small petite person definitely has some benefits with the weight of my clothes. Yoi o-mairi-o! (one day we'll say that in person!)
Super helpful - love the channel in general too! Women's Mountain Hardware Dynama (Ankle) Pants (190g) Super Comfy - similar to Patagonia Happy Hike but WAY lighter -and short people friendly too :)
You are the first Camino pilgrim that I've watched who is hard of hearing, which is super helpful because I am too. I think my hearing is getting worse and there will be a time when I need to wear my hearing aids when travelling. What makes that dehumidifying containern necessary? I've never seen it and was never taught to use it. Thank you for such an informative video!
I'm glad the video was helpful! My audiologist said that a dehumidifier keeps the hearing aids working longer. Moisture gets inside and can cause corrosion and make the hearing aids sound worse. I use a dehumidifier every night. I sweat a lot (especially on the Camino), so it's important to keep the moisture down when you can. My first audiologist didn't tell me about dehumidifiers either. My second and third audiologists BOTH told me about dehumidifiers. I notice a big difference. I use an electric one at home, but take the little plastic one on trips.
The paper maps I have came from the pilgrim office in Saint-Jean-Pied-du-Port. I use guidebook apps to navigate. Check out the free Buen Camino or Camino Ninja apps. I also like the Wise Pilgrim app; it's worth the price.
Thanks for sharing your pack! You showed an insulated snack bag in the video, but didn't include a link to it in the description. Can I ask where you purchased it? Thanks!
I love how your pack clips in the front. I don't know how it would fit if you are bigger chested. I love the PSA - do not contribute to the toilet paper problem. We said that a lot in our videos! 🙏🏼 Questions: How much water did you carry on the Le Puy? Did the Gites in France use WhatsApp? Did you find hiking poles in Le Puy? Could you find ATM's regularly? Great video! We can't wait to get on the Camino again. ❤
Thanks so much! Good point about the bag clips. I'm a B cup, so it works for me. There are some diagrams on the website suggesting to put the buckle under your bust if you are larger chested. I haven't seen anyone else wear this bag, so I'm not sure what that feels/looks like. On Le Puy, I often carried 2 L. I drink a lot of water and it was August. Gites in France rarely used Whatsapp. We had to make phone call for those reservations. They also use email, but the response time is often too slow to use email while on the trail. It's possible to find hiking poles in Le Puy, but you have to time your arrival for stores to be open. We arrived on a Sunday and the pilgrim hiking store is closed Sundays and Mondays. Tons of ATMs. No issues with that! Great questions!
This is the BEST video! What size towel did you buy? Medium? Do you have a video on the different versions of the Camino? I'm confused about all of the options and what might be best for hiking and best route for biking. I have a friend who hiked it but then biked for four days in the middle and that helped her feet to heal.
Thank you so much. I have the size large towel. We don't have a video (yet) but we have one comparing the Frances and the Norte: th-cam.com/video/5VOOTik-O40/w-d-xo.html We don't have any experience bicycling the Camino but many people choose the Frances route for that.
So you must check a bag to get your trekking poles there. I have some I love but understand they are not legal for carry-on. I know I can also get some there.....
Thank you for this video. I wonder how you got through the airlines with your scissors not being confiscated. Did you check in your backpack instead of carrying it on?
Definitely doing my job with the Merino wool! I didn't bring a headlamp because I didn't plan to walk in the dark. The few days we did, I used my phone light. I'm never the first person awake, so I don't pack in the dark. If you do plan to leave early, pack your bag the night before and bring a headlamp only if you plan to hike every day before sunrise.
I am seriously looking at the 30L version of the same backpack you have Planing to split a super lightweight tent 🏕️ with hubby (x OB instructors) I have 58Lit Osprey Eja now. Only weights 2.11lbs and more room for sure that I don’t need on this Hike/Camino. Any suggestions? I know it’s bigger but I like that you don’t have to put a rain cover on your backpack 🎒. Did you really like everything about it ? May purchase very soon Thanks
We also have the 30L version and it fits the same as the 24L version. I really do like everything about it except, I wish it was a bit lighter weight. However, lighter weight backbacks don't fit me since they're made for people with longer torsos.
Did you ever find a lighter alternative to the Patagonia Studio pants? You're right. They are awesome - and heavy. I might have to justify leaving other stuff behind to take them 😢
I get mine a full size larger than my normal shoes. I recommend that she go try shoes on at the end of the day (feet are more swollen then) with hiking socks. REI is a great place to try stuff on.
I purchased a backpack you have, but I am concerned that it might not be big enough when I go onto Camino what do you think? Should I get another one? My Camino will be in September and I am 5 feet small frame and I was thinking maybe I should get a bigger one I’m not sure. Can you give me some directions?
Have you tried doing a test pack and taking a day hike with it? I personally think that fewer items is better for the wear and tear on your body. However, if you have bulky clothes, towel, and sleeping sack/bag, you might need a bigger bag.
Great video. FYI- if you wear deodorant, you’ll wear out the merino wool armpit faster than otherwise. That said, I still wear out armpits on merino shirts. There’s a cottage company, Vaucluse , that makes a lightweight spacer that goes between you and your frameless backpack to allow ventilation. So no more soaking wet back. Saves wear on the clothes and stink on the backpack. The concept seems to defeat the purpose of a frameless pack… but quite the opposite. It makes the frameless pack more comfortable and with negligible weight. Merino is great…but try alpaca! I gave up with merino underwear. Wears out too fast. Back to synthetics. Lightweight and dries fast and a protective barrier for when I use alpaca leggings on colder days.
Thank you! I haven't had problems with the armpits wearing out in other shirts, this one is just particularly fragile. Thanks for the recommendation for Vaucluse. I'm definitely going to check them out. Also want to check out some alpaca clothing! By far the most sturdy merino underwear I've ever worn is by Branwyn. It's definitely worth trying them if you like merino. Thanks for all your lovely recommendations.
You don't need to, but it helps to ready your body for walking long distances. If you do not walk regularly, we suggest starting the first week with shorter distances (12-18 km per day).
I have a question about the sleeping sack. Is it merino wool, or a different material? I found different options by Cocoon. I’m planning on summer Camino.
They'll probably go back in stock in the Spring. The company knows how people love them. My friend loved his REI sun hoodie. It held up incredibly well and still looked like new after 54 days. Here's the link: bit.ly/3O4FWey
Hi, I recommend no hiking pole. I used one for a few weeks on my first Camino and it ended up giving me tendonitis since I was walking unevenly. About half the pilgrims don't use poles so you'll be fine :) Buen Camino!
@@DaysWeSpend thanks for your response. I have been watching quite a few packing videos, as I am trying to get weight down and have been looking at the lumber pack to remove chances of more shoulder problems
I’m grateful for this packing list. We’re just starting our planning for next year’s Camino. There are so many things here I never thought about. Side note: your pronunciation of Camino Frances is painful. In Spanish it would sound like Camino frahn-THESS. In French the words are different: Chemin de Francais.
Ah, I just found out that Farm to Feet has a great return policy if they wear out. You can send them a photo of your socks and they replace them for free. I just received my replacement pair.
@@DaysWeSpend yes, I have known about this replacement policy for years and have had some of my socks replaced, I guess my thought is, why go through this trouble when I could purchase a brand that doesn't wear out like this?
I get sweaty anyways, so the back sweat isn't a big deal for me. It has a little bit of ventilation with the ribbing, but not anywhere near as much as an Osprey.
And take some extra hiking pole tipps with you! You can not always get the right tipps to your poles in a smal town... and the clicking of the metal tipp is not nice... my experience 😊
Great point! I always pack extra pole tips, too! I forgot to mention it since the ones in the video are my spares. :) My favorite tips (these red ones from Decathlon) are surprisingly hard to find on the Camino Frances. The only walkable Decathlon is in Pamplona. All the others are out in the suburbs.
Never use the shoes you use for any walking (town or trail) in the shower. If you think you need shower shoes bring a pair just for that purpose. The shoes you walk in have lots of bacteria on them that you’re bringing into the shower and can cause infections in the people showering after you especially if they have any broken skin on their feet. I never wore anything on my feet in the shower and had no problems.
You can wear swim socks that are made for walking around water parks in the shower too instead of a flip flop. They are more lightweight and pack easier. You can use them like a slipper.
last comment the chest buckle for women it look like it closes right over your breast. Normally chest straps are higher so breast is not in the way. Please share how this buckle affected that area for women. Thanks
For me, it closes kinda over my breasts and a bit below. The website shows that most women extend the top strap to buckle it at their bust line. On the product page, click on "size guide" and it will show you the picture. I'm a B cup, so I found the harness very comfortable for me. It felt like a sports bra.
I love those Xero sandles, I was just going to order a pair on their annual sale, but got some office shoes instead. Considering it's almost winter here i Toronto, sandels aren't much use at the moment 😂 I love Xero shoes. I wear the Xero TerraFlex when I'm wilderness backpacking, and put a North Sole brand insole in for a bit of extra cushion. I think pee cloths should just be given out to people who squat to pee when they start any hike! And trowels to every single person! Maybe even a Travel Tushy bidet. 😂 Caminos, wilderness, whichever. I intensely dislike seeing TP blooms along the trail. It's just so rude. And gross. I like your pack, I'm just not so sure it would work for larger breasted people. I think I would have some very odd looking bulges all over everywhere 😂
Xero shoes are awesome. I wear the Zelen daily and I just ordered a pair of Ridgeway boots for daily wear in Galicia. I'll have to check out the North Sole insoles. Those sound great. I love my TerraFlex for day hikes, but I found my feet swell too much to use them on Caminos. I had to switch to Altras for the extra cushion and wider midfoot. Definitely agree about the pee cloths! I've brought a trowel on more remote Camino routes. The Frances has so many towns though, it's really not needed for this one. Good point about the bag for larger breasted people. I'm a B cup, so it works for me. There are some diagrams on the website suggesting to put the buckle under your bust if you are larger chested. I haven't seen anyone else wear this bag, so I'm not sure what that feels/looks like.

Hello! Love your video and your suggested packing style ❤
I have a couple questions..
1. Does the Ridge Merino Wool hooded top shrink at all in the wash?
2. Did you find yourself needing a head lamp or any kind of light? I saw some other people's videos that had them for the early morning starts but you didn't mention any in your video so figured I'd get your thoughts on that.

Thank you for this thorough video-great detail. What paper map did you pack?
The paper maps I have came from the pilgrim office in Saint-Jean-Pied-du-Port. I use guidebook apps to navigate. Check out the free Buen Camino or Camino Ninja apps. I also like the Wise Pilgrim app; it's worth the price.
Thanks for sharing your pack! You showed an insulated snack bag in the video, but didn't include a link to it in the description. Can I ask where you purchased it? Thanks!
That snack bag was a lucky find at Flying Tiger a few years ago, but we haven’t seen it since so I can’t include a link!
I had my eye on that too. 👁️
@@DaysWeSpend thanks a bunch!!
We don't have a video (yet) but we have one comparing the Frances and the Norte: th-cam.com/video/5VOOTik-O40/w-d-xo.html
We don't have any experience bicycling the Camino but many people choose the Frances route for that.
So you must check a bag to get your trekking poles there. I have some I love but understand they are not legal for carry-on. I know I can also get some there.....
We have packed a cardboard box with trekking poles, sunscreen, and our knife. It’s easy to check on the airline. Then the box is recycled afterward.
Thanks
Thank you so much!!!
How did you fly with the hiking Poles and knife? Did you just check those or your whole pack? Flying could make for a good video subject. Thanks
We checked the poles and knife only. We packed them in a box then recycled it when we arrived.
Thank you for this video. I wonder how you got through the airlines with your scissors not being confiscated. Did you check in your backpack instead of carrying it on?
The scissors are small enough that they are carry-on friendly. But, we did check-in our hiking poles and knife in a cardboard box.
Did you check your poles and knife? Great list!
Thank you! Yes, those went in a box that we checked in at the airport. Everything else was carried on.
It's amazing how certain parts of Spain look like Earth.
Ha! The variation in landscape never ceases to amaze us.
And then other parts look like the moon!
Keeping those sheep farmers in business! Thanks for the detail. No headlamp?
Definitely doing my job with the Merino wool! I didn't bring a headlamp because I didn't plan to walk in the dark. The few days we did, I used my phone light. I'm never the first person awake, so I don't pack in the dark.
If you do plan to leave early, pack your bag the night before and bring a headlamp only if you plan to hike every day before sunrise.
I am seriously looking at the 30L version of the same backpack you have Planing to split a super lightweight tent 🏕️ with hubby (x OB instructors)
I have 58Lit Osprey Eja now. Only weights 2.11lbs and more room for sure that I don’t need on this Hike/Camino.
Any suggestions? I know it’s bigger but I like that you don’t have to put a rain cover on your backpack 🎒. Did you really like everything about it ? May purchase very soon
Thanks
We also have the 30L version and it fits the same as the 24L version. I really do like everything about it except, I wish it was a bit lighter weight. However, lighter weight backbacks don't fit me since they're made for people with longer torsos.
Did you ever find a lighter alternative to the Patagonia Studio pants? You're right. They are awesome - and heavy. I might have to justify leaving other stuff behind to take them 😢
I'm going to try out the Mountain Hardware DYNAMA/2™ ANKLE pants. I'm hoping I like them but I'll update after I use them.
Thank you I do not want to waste my money buying things I do not need
Buen Camino!
Great video..Question..What shoe size do you recommend for El Camino (The Way)..my girlfriend is a 6.5 US or 36 EU, should she get a 1 size bigger?
What size hoodie did you get? Not sure if I should get a medium or large
I have a size small. I’m 5’1”
@@DaysWeSpend thanks, I’ll look into the Branwyn.
2024:Bucket list 😊
You can do it! Buen Camino!
Hi. Can I ask what Dr Bronners soap scent you use please, so many to choose from?
The lavender is my favorite!
at 22:34 Snack Bag what is the brand? I found Hyperlite mountain gear is similar to it.
The one I have is a super cheap version from the store Flying Tiger. They don’t have it anymore.
Do i need to workout and stay fit before my Camino hike?
You don't need to, but it helps to ready your body for walking long distances. If you do not walk regularly, we suggest starting the first week with shorter distances (12-18 km per day).
I have a question about the sleeping sack. Is it merino wool, or a different material? I found different options by Cocoon. I’m planning on summer Camino.
The one I have is a polyester material called "coolmax." I recently upgraded to a lighter one made of 100% silk.
I see that Ridge Solstioce ios out of stock, any similar brand you could recommend? THANKS
They'll probably go back in stock in the Spring. The company knows how people love them. My friend loved his REI sun hoodie. It held up incredibly well and still looked like new after 54 days. Here's the link: bit.ly/3O4FWey
Voormi does a "River Run" sun hoody. Expensive, but made in the USA and a fantastic top as sun protection, base layer etc.
Can I ask about your hearing impaired sign on your pack? Where did you get it and what is it made of?
I downloaded and had it printed and laminated. It's been super helpful on the Camino! Highly recommend.
Hi
Would you suggest a single hiking pole or no pole for a woman with a major shoulder injury in one shoulder?
Hi, I recommend no hiking pole. I used one for a few weeks on my first Camino and it ended up giving me tendonitis since I was walking unevenly. About half the pilgrims don't use poles so you'll be fine :) Buen Camino!
@@DaysWeSpend thanks for your response. I have been watching quite a few packing videos, as I am trying to get weight down and have been looking at the lumber pack to remove chances of more shoulder problems
I hope to do the Camino for the first time before I turn 75… is that too adventurous? Too old for the first time?
It’s never too late to walk the Camino. You’ve got this! Buen camino.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you!
Hello. Where do you get the map and list of alberges?
Those came from the Pilgrim Office in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. They give them out to everyone in multiple languages.
Glad the packing list was helpful. Thanks for watching.
❤
My farm to feet socks also wear out quickly -- just from day-to-day use.
@@LisaFladager Absolutely understand that. My Darn Toughs definitely hold up better.
team Darn Tuff here Farm to Feet also have life time warranty so trade those in!
That's awesome to know! Thanks!
Sorry also was it hot on your back no ventilation frame like Eja. We go month of June 2024
Great great video, thank you very much! And congrats on 5,5 kg 😂
Thank you! 😃
I use my buff as an eye mask.
that's a great idea. Mine gets too sweaty and full of sunscreen to do that.
Wide toe box and zero drop all the way.
Agreed!
Hello, I beg you, would you show me both of your hearing aids? I also use both
You can see them at 00:06. They're silver colored behind my ears. I have them in both ears.
What brand and model knee brace are you using?
It's a simple compression brace from a Spanish brand called Farmalastic.
Thank you!
I haven't seen anyone else wear this bag, so I'm not sure what that feels/looks like.
please show me your two hearing aids.
for me to understand as your new customer.🤗🤗🤗
Sorry I don't have any videos directly showing them. They are Oticon brand.
@@DaysWeSpend even though I want to see both. I will use it as a guide for myself. Please show me.🙏
Thanks for watching. I really don't like sharing that much personal details on what I wear.
@@DaysWeSpendto dedicate that people with disabilities are not a barrier to sharing things.
Please show it so my husband and children know. There are lots of people out there like me, I beg you.🙏🙏🙏(.to fellow women.)
What is a "buff"?🤷
It's a versatile type of scarf that can be used as a hat, balaclava, neck scarf for sun protection or warmth. You can wet it to stay cool. Super versatile and awesome. alnk.to/60YNPnq
Whole footage is not about info season but a product endorsement session, or who wannabe one to product endorse.
Yeah not really, I found it useful she's only mentioning the brand because that's what she used, there are other brands using the same materials. Lighten up.
you should start covering your legs to prevent skin cancer.
