    I was one of the people who bought one of the drafts (lot 2) on Monday. All of the ardennes (Belgium drafts) were sold, the ones that didn't sell in the ring were sold afterward. They all came from church farm which if known for their abuse and neglect of animals. The were forced to sell them all in the sale so that they wouldn't be taken away. Luckily, they are no longer breeding or selling horses, which is good because the poor things were in awful condition, I wouldn't be suprised if some of them didn't make it. Loes (lot 2 which I have now renamed Athena) is getting on well and is settled in her new home and on the way to becoming healthy again.

      Or a pony that could be driven (or even "raced" as a hobby and in a not-so-serious way).
      You don't need to just look for ponies you can ride.
      I mean I have a certain pony gelding (Terry) in mind whom I would love to give a retirement home. I'm too big for him now, but I think I could still do a bit of driving as an option for a Welsh his size. Not that that would be the only thing he can do or that he would even have to "work" in his retirement home. Just something to spice things up and to not get bored to death of "normal" things.

    I know there is a difference in currency, but I’m still shocked that the sport horse types are selling for less than 2000, in the United States they’d easily be reaching five figures, our retiring racehorses sell for 2000, and they’re not always in good condition/sound

    • @gracepurewal
      @gracepurewal 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah here in Ireland and even on horsequest in England all adverts for horses are at least 3000 unless they are like yearlings or only lightly backed, so the sales in England are different to horses you see online but I've never been to a sale in Ireland so I don't know if it's different here too🤷

    • @elliehodgson3876
      @elliehodgson3876 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I’m only part way through but this is a great vlog. Utterly heartbreaking to see the state of the draughts, especially when you imagine how a heavy horse should look but it is the sad reality of sales and a harsh winter. Horse ownership is the most expensive it’s ever been and even done on a budget or with your own land it’s extremely expensive. In the last year or so of her life my mare cost nearly £1000 per month with livery, medication and remedial shoeing. Something I couldn’t really afford but something I did because she was my horse and I’d never give up on her in her old age. I was lucky, I was able to keep her into her old age and she lived her days with me but sometimes circumstances and funding mean that isn’t possible. I genuinely hope the heavy horses found a good home and are now being given the care and nutrition they so desperately need. It a genuine shame that they were able to get into this state but hopefully they will all go on to live healthier lives, they seemed so depressed bless them.
    I for one really appreciate you showing all aspects of sales/horse ownership and hopefully it will serve as educational for many too because the easy bit is the buying, the hard work comes with ownership and producing.

    Oh those Belgian Draughts ❤️ two of my friends have owned Ardennes and they are just the most kind tempered lovely horses. One of my friends had one and she was 14.2 but quite honestly the hugest stockiest horse I’ve ever seen. Before my friend had her she bred a couple of foals to a thoroughbred and I believe the offspring were both successful local event horses. So there could be a niche there for you!
    Those cookies - me and my other half used to buy a pack of the purple triple choc ones every week when we went shopping. We’d have one each at lunchtime Saturday and then Sunday. Aida McEwen I just read another comment that said the people that owned the horses have been know to neglect and abuse them. so apparently not only were they not taken care off properly, they were abused. which is sad. I also read that the owners only got rid of them because they were about to get taken away.

I’m actually at the point been there done that. Our auction is 3 hours by car away. Sadly, lots of horses go to the kill buyers. I love the Percheron. Thanks for sharing your adventure.

And instead of you scrolling down the pages which is a bit difficult for us, would it be easy to enter snaps of each page? Just pause for 2 seconds on each so we have time to pause and read. Thank you Meg! I love, love, love your channel and everyone in it!

I haven't been home in the UK for over a year and British baked goods are missed, your breakfast cob (I'm from Nottinghamshire, so I can't call it a roll!) :P well what ever it was... it looked lovely. Home comfort foods. Some lovely ponies there, I so want a little pony. I'm not bothered about riding I would just like to have our to take trekking like a dog basically. I do like these vlogs, and a trip to Ireland is very exciting, how many conny's can you fit in one lorry... I do like them, they seem so special and I love how intelligent they are. • @abbiholz9274
      @abbiholz9274 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It really depends on where you go and what type of auction it is. If it's a loose horse sale, you'll see everything. Fat horses, in shape horses, starved horses, old horses, babies, ponies, everything. If you go to a ride through, most horses will be handle able and in at least decent condition because they preview (show) the horses before the sale, and then ride them through the ring. The only horse sale barn near me has both types on the same day. Generally, you see unrideable/unsafe horses in the loose sale. Most of these horses go to kill or get picked up by horse traders. Sometimes riding horses and broodmare end up in this portion, usually it is due to owner illness/death. There are always a handful of thin horses, but most are not allowed to sell because they are considered "no value stock". No value stock is generally studs (especially unhandled), emaciated horses, and unpapered foals, because they are of no value to kill buyers and buyers looking for a usable horse will have no use for them.
      Ride through sales are generally pretty good about having all horses be in good (or at least decent) condition.

    • @AlliWalker

      What a huge generalization. US sales vary on region, state, breed, industry, and type. Keeneland sale in Kentucky routinely sells thoroughbred colts and filles anywhere from $15k-$1.5m. There are 9.2 million horses in the United States and most auctions are not feedlot auctions like you'll see on facebook "rescue" groups. Most horses also do not go to slaughter.

      Rosie Ride I bought a horse at auction last year, and at the end, it was between me and someone who was on the phone from another coast. It slows the bidding down some because the auctioneer has to consult the person on the phone, but otherwise, it appears to be the same process as going to an auction live.
