The opening was stunning and the sudden reality check made me feel less alone knowing I’m not the only one currently dragging myself out of bed to muck out while it’s still dark outside😂. Winter as an equestrian never gets easier and yet we choose to go through it year after year haha xxx
Just in case you didn’t know, warm water freezes soooo much faster than cold water in the minus side 😅 so instead of taking warm water you could take coldish water❤ I live in Sweden so it’s a routine😂
Not to be morbid, but coming from someone older who’s mom was just diagnosed with cancer, cherish these days with your parents. I know it’s hard to picture now (as it was for me when I was your age 20 years ago) but someday you will look back on this and realize these were the good old days. Even with the cold weather. As Andy from The Office once said.. “I wish there was a way to know you’re in the good old days before you’ve actually left them.”
I have a little tip that may help the frozen taps 😊 if you fill an old feed or haylage bag with old hay/bedding and cut out a little hole in the back middle of it, poke the tap into it at night so it’s in the middle of the hay /straw. It keeps it insulated. It used to work for me when I had an outside tap that I needed to use early in the morning. Hope it helps!
Pro tip for pulling ice out of buckets (after doing it barehanded for many years and eventually causing tissue damage in tips of fingers) carry a cheap pair of waterproof dishwashing gloves in your pocket (The thick ones are yellow here in the US, get one size up so they fit over your gloves). Slide them over your gloves and pull the ice. Hands stay warm, gloves stay dry and they are strong enough that the ice doesn't tear them. Voila!
Coming to you from Kentucky in the USA. We have had temperatures of -17 Celsius most of January. Here is a tip if you don’t have electric warmers in your water troughs. Take a gallon jug and fill it with salt water. It will float in your troughs and help prevent freezing.
Honestly you beautiful, wonderful family can you not give yourselves a humongous, pat on your backs, or hear how wonderful you get on with tasks. You put your 4 leggers first and still find humor and crack on. We come back so see I love y'all.
Well I enjoyed this far more than I'm sure you did! My cousin's pony always waited to wee in her fresh, fluffy, bedding because she hated when it splashed up her legs off the hard floor otherwise. Can remember her standing with back legs crossed waiting for her stable to be ready, bless! Stay warm, dry and upright - loved the bucket salt spreader, worked a treat.
Hobs is also your yard’s Health & Safety Manager… good risk assessments and excellent safety briefing to Jam, Hobs 🙌 I do worry about the employee breaking ice in the troughs, though 😂 and now worried about the one working at height on the bird feeders 🫣
Meg, as a fellow “blower over broom” horsey gal, I trashed my 2nd sets of batteries for electric blowers and just got a corded one. They stay just as strong as the day you buy them vs the ones with batteries. As the batteries age, the blower isn’t as strong and doesn’t last as long off of one charge. Yes, I deal with a cord but it’s an extra 40 seconds (if that) to hang it all up nice and tidy. Best of luck continuing to survive the brutish winter!
Meg starting the blower really tickled me 😂 brilliant vlog! Just a random tip for not breaking your back (as much) when filling haynets screw 2 electric fence insulators in the wall that you can open and hang the nets off when filling them! Also we have the electric stihl blower and it’s really good! Battery powers all sorts of other stuff from the range but if you’re undecided…don’t walk..run!
Our yard has been empty for over 8 years - and sometimes I miss the routine, and the lovely people who helped out. However, most days in the winter I am glad to not have that responsibility (and I don’t miss the flies in the summer either 😂). Hopefully the slight improvement in the weather is easing things a bit (but not bring back the mud too soon).
Amazing team work. How lucky you all are to have each other. Loved watching. Enjoy that cuppa. And Meg, protect your hands! Waterproof gloves. Hands will thank you when you’re older.
Hi ….Elphick Team - Not only is competing stressful - Taking care of them is up there with it - You all work so hard and definitely deserve all the good times and top results you get - You are a lovely family and it is always a pleasure to follow your journey with you - Hopefully….Better weather just around the corner 👍🙂🌟😘
-7 C is about 20 F and we pray for -7C during the day. Next week we are expecting -18 C or less during the day. Vallie and Moose are very nice looking. Out of all the boys, Vallie is Very Nice looking and I bet will be a excellent event horse 5 years from now. We give up on exterior taps for 4 months of the year.
Heated water buckets & heat tapes for water spigots ! We had a stud who had a heated automatic waterer kept just above freezing but he preferred the colder water in a bucket - left both available " just in case " . 🥰
This is the first winter in years (decades) I haven't had to break ice for horses. Missing the horses now living elsewhere, but NOT missing the ice breaking and carrying boiling hot water from the house to mix the water warmer.
I live in a very cold climate and I'd suggest insulating the water buckets. Here up north you sometimes see buckets with electric heating system installed between the bucket itself and the outer insulation bucket. Since you have electric fences(did I see right?) that could be a possbility...?
Oh, the glamorous life of an equestrian...😂. Great work ladies. I love that you turn out, whatever the weather, and also leave the horses naked when possible. They really do appreciate it and are far happier. I'm in BC, Canada and enjoying a mild winter, no snow, or minus Temps so far! My family in Lancs are around minus 10 and digging sheep out of huge snow drifts!! Enjoy your cuppa. ❤
This is why yoga is good Meg with all the winter bending, lugging water and filling hay nets etc you all need a good long stretch. This took me way back but we did it simply because we love our horses. Cheer up it’ll be spring before you know it lol.tfs🤗🏇🤗
Great Vlog. Good to see the family pulling together 😂. I have to say, I prefer frosty, cold weather to wet and windy ( can’t bear the mud and mess) . Have to say, I do get grumpy/ depressed when I can’t ride, albeit, at a very low level compared with you, Meg😊
Very interesting, but exhausting moring routine. As an aviculturist for over 40 years with my late husband, myvearly morning routine was getting 35 + aviaries of parrots fed as quickly as possible. At lunchtime another feed and in the evening taking out their dishes but no rugging, or haynets! All livestock has to be taken care of daily and currently it is a question of keeping birds cool in very warm weather herebis South Africa's summer. Good luck with the frozen taps.
The opening was downright cinematographic! Pete is doing some great work! Really great video. I sold my place 2 years ago and my 2 horses are now boarded, so it really took me back to Januarys for 20+ years of my life! Been there, done that, have the t-shirt. And I didn't have a Hobs to help me! Your family pulls together well (even King Kenny LOL).
Girlllll...I feel your pain! It's all about just surviving. 😂 I'm in Michigan, USA and I swear I should never check the 10 day forecast in the winter. Next week -14*F. 😢 Now I'm dreading it every day. 😫 I also wanted to add you can get heat tap/cords for you Spickets to keep them from freezing. And I use a 100 ft expandable garden hose for my outdoor water. When I'm done it shrinks up and I store it in an old feed bucket in my heated tack room or you could keep it just inside the door of the house 😂. I don't know how you and Hobs haul all that water around. But good for you. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Using a blower is a game changer for keeping the barn clean. We also have a shop vac for cleaning, but we’ll swap it to the blower mode for tighter to reach areas like behind the feed bins or tack trunks. Our blower is a cheap little electric Ryobi and my only complaint is that the batteries are crap. We have four batteries always charging so that we can rotate them out as we clean the barn. I love these types of videos. I would love to see more like this! Also your home is sooooo stunning. Every video we get little glimpses of the property but the drone fly-over really revealed how amazing your property is. You’re so fortunate 🖤🖤🖤
So sorry for your terrible winter you’ve been having! It sure is beautiful! But I’ve never been so grateful to live in Hawaii until the reality of your winter routine sank in. Wish you could visit and winter here with your ponies we’d be happy to have you! 🩷🏝️
Omg I’m freezing just watching you guys!!!!!! And I’m in Los Angeles!!! We’re literally burning up. (We’re safe thank god) You’re troopers doing all the things. Happy ponies is always the goal.
I love your face at the start it just really sums up being an equestrian in winter happy to know I am not alone. And also Vali is getting so big compared to his little baby self.
My hack for clearing ice from tanks is to use a pitchfork. I break it with the handle end and scoop it out with the fork end! I appreciate making even just a single chore less taxing on the back as we all know they can be! (The back humor was spot on hahah.)
I loved to watch you morning routine, you all are such wonderfull person. The only thing I would like to recommend The water pipe should be empty before it freezes. Greetings from the southern part of Germany, we have had -15° at night the last few days
I feel your pain. About the same temperature here, we often get colder but, very little snow which means terrible hard ground. I like snow because you can ride safely. I agree, no one likes ice.
Its been soooo cold lately. Poor Pete. At least you and mum are moving...😂😂. Bear Grylls.😂😂That welsh girl has so many talents...😅😅. Welsh D's live off fresh air...any food any they put on wieght. I love the warm feeds. Porridge for horses....great idea with collander...😂😂😂 Would it be easier to carry a water carrier . Then top up water? Also get your dad to make you a hay filler. So you wrap the haynet over. Then fill...( you can buy small ones) I used to fill my hay nets on the bales waist hieght. As my back is buggered....your Dad is hilarious..😂😂😂
Listening to you complaining about the ice as a Finnish person is hilarious. My honest first thought was "...what ice?" I get that winter is way different in the UK, but most of this seems so usual to me🙈 Maybe I'm just traumatised over falling on my ass due to the ice so many times? Who knows!😅
The bird good can be bought on line in bulk which is a lot cheaper. Busy morning love. I remember breaking the ice in the cattles troughs in the winter. My dad gave all the kids this job to help him out. We loved helping and like you didn't feel the cold either.❤
Meg! I need to send you some heated water buckets and some Hay Chic hay nets. I have a few winter hacks to help. You can use solar and a plug but in America I think the plugs are different than in the UK.
How many Elphicks does it take to carry a water bucket (albeit, a large water bucket :) So funny. Clearly Elphicks are very fond of things with holes on the bottom (colander to filter the ice, and a holely bucket to grit the yard). To be fair, if you're not used to -25 to -40 in Canada's winter, -12 must feel mighty cold. FYI, if you continue to have a lot more ice in England we have things called icers that stretch over our boots which makes you fearless walking across ice. PS leaf blowers are the bomb --you'll need one at home too. And, re battery operated, which I love, means you have to stop when the power runs down :)
Same here in Timaru. I very occasionally break ice in the concrete troughs with a standard too 😂lol equestrian genius 😅 I do have the trouble with our outdoor taps being a nice icicle. We have to fill the kettle the night before for speedibeet and a big jug of water in the feed shed ready for mixing morning feeds. Good job Megan and Hobbs, love watching you guys. Laughter is the very best medicine. I do wish you warmer days soon, winter is very hard on the ponies and us. Happy days 🎉🐴❤❤
Just in case you didn’t know, warm water freezes soooo much faster than cold water in the minus side 😅 so instead of taking warm water you could take coldish water❤ I live in Sweden so it’s a routine😂 loved the vlog!
Great video; I would say as always, but I much prefer these personal snaps of the daily routine and interactions with your mum and dad. Best wishes for the New Year and health and happiness for you and yours from Ontario, Canada.
This is fascinating. Your property is gorgeous!! Wish we could have come to breakfast with you! Hot water actually freezes faster than cold water so that might be why the troughs in the ponies pasture was already refreezing. Also on the spigots the black plastic ends are probably freezing moreso than the spigot itself. But maybe when it's that cold it doesn't matter lol. Love these videos and would love to see your dad have his own morning routine!! 💗💗💗

So true
Just in case you didn’t know, warm water freezes soooo much faster than cold water in the minus side 😅 so instead of taking warm water you could take coldish water❤ I live in Sweden so it’s a routine😂
Meg! When you are dragging buckets , save your back and put a leadrope through the handle 😉 lifesaver !

i LOVEEEEEEE this type of video! hope u do more soon! can’t wait to watch!
I ❤ seeing the ponies getting their jammies on! Makes me feel so warm and comfy! Wishes of warm to y'all 😊
Blummin loved this. Hobbs and Kenny the stars of the show.

Hard work in nasty weather, real world horse keeping, no butterflies, just grinding. TY for sharing the reality again..
Yes a morning routine with king kenny is what we need 😊

Loved watching a realistic winter morning routine and how amazingly you look after your horses
Vali’s got so big ❤he’s such a lovely colour, hope he stays that way, gorgeous boy ❤❤
This is the realest thing I’ve seen all day
king kenney morning routines are a need!❤

I’ve seen bits of Vali, but he looks so grown up in this video! ❤

I’m so jealous from Canada it’s gotten down to around -24 where I am.Love ya Meg
Yikes, I’d be defeated 😂
@ I am lol

Love this so much! Beautiful opening...and appreciate the honest reality 😂 Thanks for bringing us along!
When I had my horse farm, I too hated the cold and miserable days of Winter. But, when Spring comes around, it is all worth it!! Stay Warm💕

King Kenny needs his own series, he gives Dull Mens Club vibes😂👍🏼
Yes agree! He's awesome 🎉
Seriously love this video! I love you and your mom working together. This is the real routine. Couldn't be better!!❤
the blower it always makes me laugh reminds me of an old lawn mower i had it would never start first try it always showed me up .
Gorgeous video!! I love the way this was filmed ❤
I felt that "morning" in the depths of my soul 😩 😂😂
Meg! I need to send you some heated water buckets and some Hay Chic hay nets. I have a few winter hacks to help. You can use solar and a plug but in America I think the plugs are different than in the UK.
Nice to see a routine winter morning and the winterscape. Watergate. Lol.

Wow, that was _beautiful_ cinematography in the opening. Kudos to you or whoever on your team filmed that :0
I think I prefer cold and frozen to wet and muddy. Our coldest here in the Waikato NZ would probably be -3 once or twice over winter. Great video!
Same here in Timaru. I very occasionally break ice in the concrete troughs with a standard too 😂lol equestrian genius 😅 I do have the trouble with our outdoor taps being a nice icicle. Loved this! Need a whole day routine now! 😊
Lovely vlog Meg xx poor Pete 😊 your parents property is stunning ❤
… and the Award for best cinematography goes to… Pete 🏆
This is my favourate weather in UK...even with horses :)
No cause those few shots in the beginning were some of the most beautiful images I’ve ever seen
Has Pete got a drone for Christmas? ..loving the overhead shots
Just in case you didn’t know, warm water freezes soooo much faster than cold water in the minus side 😅 so instead of taking warm water you could take coldish water❤ I live in Sweden so it’s a routine😂 loved the vlog!
I have an electric leaf blower...it's awesome. Just flip a switch and it starts up. It's also great for blowing light snow.
Under an hour! Can’t wait to watch.
Me
Great video; I would say as always, but I much prefer these personal snaps of the daily routine and interactions with your mum and dad. Best wishes for the New Year and health and happiness for you and yours from Ontario, Canada.
Spoiled now with heated tubs in the paddocks and heated buckets in the stalls. It's a huge relief.
Oh Meg you do make me laugh 😅😂
Meg get some tap covers for when it’s cold, no frozen taps then. Amazon or B&Q have them.
We use heat tape.
England is gorgeous!! Soon hopefully it will warm up and you can have less winter whoas! Pun intended.
Great work people! What about a used tea urn in the stable ? Plenty of hot water for the feed and troughs
Vali is huge haha !!
you ought to cut up some pool noodles to insulate your taps!! x
That's a frikkin brilliant idea!
I absolutely loved this vlog ❤do like a winter routine 😊
Brilliant vlog. Lovely family effort & beautiful footage from Pete 👏
Under 10mins❤❤❤❤ I love ur videos Meg I’ve been watching u for as long as I can remember❤
Nice video, liked watching it! 😊
5:29 there were definitely some comments from Hobs to Meg saying this is not how it normally goes, she barely knows that the horses get fed lol
jk ;) but we love Hobs' and Megs' relationship!!!
Fantastic really enjoyed this video. Meg is it time to introduce all your lovely ponies again.
Heads up - hot water freezes faster than cold water!
The icey ground is the scariest….sliding on ice.
Survival is all we can manage in the winter💀😂❤
i have a battery powered leaf blower for my yard, i got it from toolstation for about £80 and i love it
Tip for the outdoor water buckets put a tennis ball or any ball in whilst they are in overnight and they don’t freeze over !
