      Interesting because the F-150 would see more harsh environments in general given the nature of the vehicle. Do you find the F-150 more noisy or less comfortable on the highway with the absence of the engine cover?

    On my old A33 with VQ35, I took the cover off soon after buying it. Temp visibly dropped on the temp gauged (instead of halfway point, it maybe ran at a tick below that). It was also much easier to keep an eye on hoses and harnesses. Lastly, because the cover was stored in my garage, 10 years later when I was ready to sell the car, the engine cover was in pristine condition - and I just cleaned up the bay and then reinstalled it.

    Just did the old infrared thermometer test. I measured the temp with engine cover on, and as well with it off. I have a 2010 Toyota Corolla- just shy of 16 k miles. With cover- engine was 188-194- with it off- it read 174-179. Definitely makes a difference, and the noise inside the cabin is literally the same. I can tell a tiny difference with hood popped open, but that’s it. I’ve been wondering about this and now I will keep it off. Maybe winter time I’ll put it back to help keep it a little warmer, but from now on bare minimum- hot months it’s off- cold a tough maybe, not sure. Thanks for the video

      Which engine do you have?
      I did the same to mine - which resulted in me discovering the pcv valve
      Deleted the connection to the intake
      & installed a breather filter
      its funny...its made me physiologically breath better as well
      drove it 100K Miles -
      My family - parents n siblings are sheep in a farm
      After i did a few more little mods on it - my family would be like the idiot is ruining his car
      If i would offer to clean the MAF or Throttle Body on my father's 2004 Surf (4runner) he'd be like nah these are gimicks n crap.
      I secretly took my father's 4runner out on the road - and did I complete Radiator Flush 3 times -
      It was full of rust &deposits as fcuk! I knew he would'nt let me do it at home - Anyways I kept a .5L initial sample as proof -
      Drove home, wanted to suprise him...I said
      "Ummm so I had the Surf's radiator flushed, and here in this 0.5L bottle is what was it side. When you drive it you'll feel the difference"
      he said "Hold on what? When? Alright show me"
      We went in the porch, he opened the radiator cap...n said
      "Where is the coolant!?"
      i said "Its just got distelled water at the moment, tomorrow we or I can go n get it added"
      his tone got louder and angrily said" Havent I told you not to touch a single screw or nut in my car!?
      I tried to explain but He marched inside the house and loudly to my mom" Do you know what he's done!? He has throw out my cars antifreez etc filled it with water now Ill have to go and buy God knows how much of that stuff!
      Stupid Druggie has lost his mind....
      There have been some more incidents
      Now Ive got a Hilux - One day I was inspecting its engine...my brother as he went out said with a little merk "So its time to screw this one up huh!?
      After that

      10 degrees difference, that is a big deal in summer months, thanks!

  • @josephliptak
    @josephliptak 4 ปีที่แล้ว +54

    Another thing I do during those hot humid summer days is to pop the hood open when I get home from work and this lets out all that engine heat that would take all night to cool down entirely on those hot humid nights. I've been popping open my hoods for 35 years now and everything under that hood will last longer from hoses to electrics to belts to you name it. In fact, I open the hood after every drive , even in the winter and close the hood before my next drive. This practice has saved me a lot of money and premature wear on everything that gets baked from a parked closed hood. If you park outside of course you wouldn't want to leave the hood open all night or in rain storms and such but if you have a garage simply get in the habit of popping the hood all the way opened and allow the engine and it's parts the ability to breathe. You'll save yourself money and engine life in the long run.

      Once summer hits he did and still does the same thing.
      Back in the day on his 84 Saab 900 turbo he was religious about it.
      He doesn't do it alot now, he aquired a beater.
      Besides , the wiring and rubber stays nice , and it might or might not have helped him never replace a turbo on it (besides doing a little idle time).
      Haha someone will wander by and ask if something's wrong the hoods open....
      Even his 91 Jetta I have now since 2003 , has the original coolant hoses.

    Another reason why we have engine covers is for sound dampening. You will be able to confirm by turning the cover over and if you find insulation, then part of its purpose is to quiet the engine a little. On top of what has been mentioned in this video.

    The most valuable function that the beauty covers offers is noise insulation. In modern cars, valves and injectors are the noisiest parts and they are both on the top end, so the covers help dampen that noise. That Chevy intake manifold cover does not serve that purpose, but the one on my 2ZR-FE has insulation and covers the entire top end.

    • @AnthonyJ350
      @AnthonyJ350  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You could compromise and install sound deadening material to the hood it self. It will absorb the sound and help protect the paint from heat emitting from the exhaust manifold(s). You can also accept an engine just makes certain sounds.

Though minor it does remove weight, as does removing the hood insulation (which also would allow better cooling). Manufacturers do it for exactly why he said, make it look nice. They do it more on more expensive cars, and actually call it out on the build sheet as a feature. The one on my Cadillac 3.6VVT has a layer of insulation as well, which probably is a way they try to reduce engine noise getting into the cabin. Whenever I work on a car at work, I always throw that wothless piece of plastic into the boot of the cars. The salespeople never look under the bonnet. The management never looks under the bonnet of any of the company vehicles. The few customers that will get a loan car will not look under the bonnet. On the first oil change or service of any of the company vehicles, the first thing I do is throw the garbage cover in the boot. At home, none of my vehicles have a worthless engine cover. I threw them in the refuse. The times locals pay me to repair their automobiles, their covers go in the boot as well. I find the engine covers ridiculous and an unnecessary. The few people that have me repair their vehicles on my private time will not look under the bonnet of their vehicle either. It is as if there are people completely content with being oblivious to what their automobiles require to keep operating smoothly. But that is okay by me. When I get paid £300 plus parts to change a simple drive shaft, or £200 plus parts to change spark plugs, or £500 plux parts to change a radiator, I hope most people never look under the bonnet of their automobiles.

    that plastic engine cover does disperse some of the heat so it doesn't concentrate on the center hood of your car and eventually distort the paint possibly. Also, when running, there is enough air to keep things cooler there too as well as dirt and dust from settling. I have had, (and have) numerous cars with well over 230,00 to over 300,000 miles and can't say having or not having the engine cover made a difference. On my 14 Audi TDI it has a heat shield and really helps on the engine noise. So, if you had your car at a shop and they returned without the engine cover would you complain? What if they said it didn't do anything? Would you still want it back? What about the person you may sell the car to without an engine cover? I think under normal conditions, the engineers are pretty smart and it will help against oil spills etc staying on. On my car, it just pops off in a quick pull so no big deal.

    • @AnthonyJ350
      @AnthonyJ350  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      When my vehicle is in the shop it doesn't come back with an engine cover because I take them off.. If they said it didn't do anything I would agree. If I sold my vehicle I would sell it with the cover or put it back on.

    Toyota puts sound deadening material on the engine cover. Even without the foam sound deadening material, the plastic cover by itself breaks up the sound from the engine vibration so that resonances don't peak at such high intensity. I'm planning on purchasing a C6 Corvette Z06. 7 liters of American shock-and-awe! Cars this sexy deserve better looking engines, and engines this awesome deserve to not have that craptastic-plastic engine cover. Oh well, off goes the red plastic engine heatsoaks. To my eyes, the most beautiful engine remains the LT5 flamboyantly displayed in the C4 Corvette ZR-1. Beautiful engine with graceful aluminum intake runners pointing to those fat DOHC valve covers. Great attention to detail like the spark plug wires, all filler caps intricately designed, racecar-like hood opening revealing the fat tires and one of the most outrageous powertrains of it's time. A dynamic-looking hood opening on an otherwise conservative 'sleeper'. I agree with your ugly-cover assessment, but would put more emphasis on the heat retention. Surely there's a few hp drop from the extra heat in intake air caused by hotter valve covers, and subsequently everything under them. Likewise, knock sensors may retard timing if the extra heat is enough to warrant it. That's my theory, why I searched for this vid for possible info.😊
