It looks so satisfying when the lines filll with paint
I didn't realize it just flows and fills by itself
@@Hypnobong apparently it's something called capillary action
I KNOW RIGHT?!
It makes life worth living
Paints have different strengths.
Strongest to weakest: Lacquer, Enamel, Acrylic. That means the corresponding thinner will be stronger as well - meaning lacquer thinner will eat through enamel and acrylic easily. So you should layer in order of strength (start with lacquer).
The way to solve this problem is to use top coat at certain points throughout your build. Top coats, like the Tamiya rattle cans are lacquer, so they serve as a protective layer against lesser solvents.
would automotive clear coat work? it says fuel resistant on the can
Will lighter fluid melt acrylic paint tho?
How about straight build? Do you still to top coat first also?
@@Tea-Spin if you aren't painting then no you wouldn't need to worry about a clear coat before the panel lining. The solvents won't have anything to dissolve but the panel lining.
I love how his videos explain everything in 10 min or less. You go and watch other TH-cam and they spend 10 min explaining everything and then 2 min doing it and then another 10 talking random bs. Best tutorials on gundam by far. Keep it uo Justin. Your killing it man.
I didemt even wana do it affter that bpught little markers instead and did it on my own lol
Well, they're probably trying to make a bit more money with their channels if they're monetized already. It's often annoying on our end, because the actual content of the video is nowhere near requiring about ten minutes of video, but it's what people making content often do because the system on here kind of demands it of them for monetization to be worth their while. I think it was either 8 or 10 minutes to allow for mid-roll ads to be run on here.
Conversely, if you want to specifically avoid the mid-roll ads for whatever reason, you'd make your videos shorter on purpose. I've seen a couple of creators do that as well, either sometimes or most of the time.
If this platform is someone's main source of income or a much needed side hustle, you can't really blame them for doing what they have to within the system to get paid. You can blame TH-cam for designing their stuff that way, though. That's free real-estate right there.
Another tip: Try to topcoat clear gloss before panel lining as that tamiya panel line accent & thinner can make the plastic brittle, use it sparingly
Exactly ! But perhaps it's intentionally made to achieve a battle damage effect ? Naaaaaaah.
so the thinner can melt gundam's plastic?
Ongky Febriandy Well it won’t necessarily “melt” the plastic but it will make it weaker and more brittle. This has happened to me before when I applied the Tamiya Panel Accent to Bear plastic without having gloss top coated the surface first. During the process the enamel thinner I used to clean up cracked some of my parts. Along with a gloss topcoat I also recommend using lighter fluid instead of enamel thinner. It’s not quite as effective but it doesn’t weaken your plastic and gets the job done.
@@ninjashoyo2062 ohh i didnt know that, thanks for your info!!
@@ninjashoyo2062 noted, once again thanks for your help :D its my first time to custom a gunpla so i want to get all resourcement and information i can get 😂
This tutorial and other videos you have made have really inspired me to up my gunpla game and taught me how to do it better. Really appreciate the guidance from Studio G, I'll be sure to tell my friends getting into gunpla to check you out!
I am new to this hobby and i spent ages cleaning and retouching my panal lines I did not now about waiting for it to dry before doing the clean up. Thanks for the video.
Awesome, thanks for the quick tips and reiterating on the mixing of types. Always looking forward to these Tuesday tutorials!
Awesome video! Just getting into gunpla and bought everything except for stuff for panel lining and painting. But you made it look much more simple than i thought it would be
Make sure to top coat (gloss) before and after applying the panel lines.
Top coat will protect plastic against enamel because enamel based solvent will corrode plastic so if you leave it too long on a plastic it will break.
I've had this experience several times 😱
It also protect the layer underneath it which can be a paint job you've just completed.
It is also a good practice to use weaker base paint for the next layer.
Paint base strength goes from lacquer > enamel > acrylic.
Lacquer thinner will wipe off enamel and acrylic layer so if you're using enamel for you paint job don't use lacquer because it might wipe off the paint job.
Top coat first then either use enamel or acrylic base paint. Acrylic is the better option here but you get the point.
Have fun! And don't forget to top coat first! Don't wanna ruin your kit 😆
so i need to do a top coat first even tho my kit was paint with acrylic laquer paint? and what should i do first the panel line or water decal?
learned this the hardway, shoulder cracked on my tallgeese rg
you guys dont need the gloss top coat it only helps with the capilary action. just use very little and you can be safe.
Awesome tip! Keep the tutorial videos coming. I’m getting into doing model kits and these videos are super helpful! 👍
Absolutely love your channel! the way you explain things is super clear and to the point!
Great video again, did not know about the different paint and thinner combos. Probably the best panel lining video I’ve seen yet.
I got Gundam Astray Turn Red from my sister back in July. I havnt built Gundam since hs.. I really want to make it look good. Your tutorials are so help fill!
i just got my Tamiya panel liner yesterday, clearly this episode is for me
Thanks G-Man!! Warched a bunch of these tutorials and this was by far the best. Keep it up bro, you killing it MG
Bought my first Gundam MG kit recently. I'm excited then remembered about the panel lines and was like oh heck. 😂 I just got started and I'm going crazy overthinking how to go about assembling my Gunpla. 😊
Bro I’m so ready to see your finished work
Useful tutorial. I never panel lined my kits before. Might try it someday.
This video has made me realize i have been using the wrong type of thinner the entire time lol. No wonder it wasn't working
Bruuhh sameeee
me too 😩
Your tips are always so helpful.
I learned this from an artist, it's a technique the Old Masters used: when shading white, mix in a touch of blue.
Really glad I came across this! Doing my first MG and I really wanna make it extra clean and crisp.
Made it look really simple. Definitely looking forward to making my first attempts.
One of my most favourite youtuber for gunpla... keep it coming:)
Hello, I’m new to the channel and just got into gunpla building since 2018, favourite series is the Iron Blooded Orphans and looking forward to learning a lot here to make my own custom gunpla.
Super clear and easy to follow your instructions. So glad I found this because I bout the panel liner but not the enamel thiner. Will be gettin that ASAP
I found your channel by accident. And I enjoy and learn a lot from your videos. Thank you!!
Good tips. Always learning new things while watching
I just built a rx 78 beginner kit and now I'm hooked I'm already looking at more to practice customizing
Great little tutorial. Keep up the good work man
I love how you say "thinner". It sounds cool and interesting.
A+ guide and tips! Can't wait to panel line my first build!!
Lel i thought i was the only one which is one year late XDD
Thanks for these types of Tuesday
Great guide, helped a ton. Thanks for helping me up my Gunpla game.
We just gotta love this guy. ❤
Thank you for making it easy to understand and not as intimidating as I thought it was
watching this never let you down, very informative full of tips and tricks too
YOUR Pfp is sus
I LIKE IT ⊂(・﹏・⊂)
Nice, that's very helpful when I build my RG Force Impulse, soon. Great content 👍
Panel lining is such a basic thing to make kits look super clean. Great tips
Definitely gonna try how you were doing the panel lining after you built the leg. I do my panel lining before I build and it can get a little messy but not to hard to clean up.
wow, it's a crass course but very, informative, will try to do the panel lining on one of my older Gundam
Tip: You could always try getting tooth picks & cotton balls and just wrap the cotton around the tips. When done just slide the cotton off and respin for next time. I do a load of crafts and sometimes the ones from the store are a bit bulky for what I need so I do this. Takes a few mins but I have a range of sizes that I find useful & it's saved me quite a bit in the long run tbh since I can get 1000 toothpicks for like 50p & a bag of cotton balls for around the same price & you don't even use that much of the cotton anyway so it lasts forever.
Aww man lmao thank you I’ve been using the wrong thinner so I gave up on panel lining lucky for me I got two bottles of that enamel thinner
Love that red and white Zaku. I want to put a maple leaf on it and make it a Canadian variant :)
This was very helpful. My nippers aren't the best but now i know where to get good ones
I know already but I'll watch again for supporting you
When you pulled out your Zaku, my mouth dropped. LOL!
Thanks Master. Your tutorial are great!
Thanks for the vid. Really helpful!!
You should mention that people can use pencil to begin or even fine marker
Also for enamel wash, better just at most 1 minute drying time(or lesser) and clean it with little thinner to prevent cracks. This also helps if you apply paint or coat first to prevent direct contact to the plastic
I use Micron pens for my warhammer, guessing those will work on gunpla.
@@grelt2162 definitely will,I do it too.A cheaper alternative then gundam marker
I used to use pencil
Thank you, I'm just getting into this and I want to make sure I have all the right info before I start painting (I recognize that might be a year or two out). You're saying with the paint and thinner: paint, let dry 2 minutes max, then sparingly use thinner on cotton buds to clean up any messes.
Also, I know with markers/pens the theory is using grey on white or light grey, black on blue, brown on yellow and red. Does the same theory not apply to paint?
@@louiswilkerson2747 its the same with enamels or whatever paint. its just your preference tho. do what you think works for you as gunpla is freedom😁
Very informative. Thanks!
Thank you for the tips, it's really helpful :)
Great tips, bro!
My stupid ass tryed panel lining with the Gundam markers didn't like it then just tried painting them in with acrilic, I like the tamiya panel lining process here thanks man!
Finally i have been waiting for this
thank you so much for the tip i learned many thing...i help so much for us starters...
for anyone using Accent color pairing with enamel thinner dont dip the whole cotton bud into the enamel thinner as bandai plastic are very weak to enamel thinner so by time the plastic break or shatter if you repanel line and clean up repeatedly.Just a tad bit is enough for cleaning up.
You're the best. Thanks bud
Suletta and Miorine are cannon, no interpretations needed!
This man dropping golden knowledge for free. Cheers brother
Thanks for the tutorial
Holy Moly , That Red Zaku is AWESOME . Sorry , great video too.
Thank you very much. Very informative. God bless and stay healthy.
Thanks for the help!
I highly suggest using a enamel for most applications if you are new, also any wash will do it don't even have to come pre-mixed you can even make your own in any color you want.
I would really like to try this technique. What I’ve done up to this point is use a sharpie over where the panel lines are and then wipe it off while it’s still wet with a paper towel
thanks for the tips... will be panel lining my black wargreymon amplified/ wargreymon amp.
going to be fire!!! :O
I gotta buy some of these bottles. Give my race engines more depth. Great channel, bro!!
goddamn. makes it really pop. also that zaku is badass
Thanks for the tips
Beginner here. still working on my first Gundam. Yes, it is the RX 78-2. Thank you for this video. I was having some issues panel lining but this straightened it out.
Subbed. Thanks Justin. See you in the next one.
I thought I already knew every about panel linning, but I learned a lot from this video
If you ran out of enamel thinner to clean the excess Tamiya Panel Accent, you can use lighter fluid/butane as substitute. It’s cheaper than Tamiya enamel thinner.
thanks for this. this video helped me to improve my 30MM kits :)
Ultra fine Sharpe and a magic eraser works too
Thanks for the great video
Thank you for the tips 💯done subscribe 👍🏻
Do not use Tamiya thinner, those stuff destroy more gundam than the Zeons.
Lighter fluid
Don’t use mr paint remover either
What should I use instead?
@Calamorro III I've used Testors enamel thinner to clean up Tamiya panel liner for years with no issues on kits straight from the factory and painted with lacquer paints
@@raihidara I just used testors enamel thinner to clean up panel lining. Base coat was mr hobby lacquer. It completely ruined the lacquer base coat. The lacquer was cured and spray in multiple then layers….
best guidance video for beginner like me.
thx a lot, for a french noob you rocks :) i hope i can do something cool now, thankful studioG
Tip: remember the difference of strength of the paint. Lacquer is the strongest, if u wanna panel line on top lacquer, u can use enamel or acrylic. But DO NOT use lacquer or enamel panel liner on top of acrylic. U can use mr weathering and mr weathering solvent for the clean up. It's the safest and weakest paint i know
And becareful if u r panel lining using enamel or lacquer on bare plastic. The plastic may brittle and destroy your kit. This happened to me with my rg unicorn while using the tamiya panel liner
Lacquer > enamel > acrylic
if I use the enamel panel line accent, I need to topcoat first right? So I should use Lacquer topcoat instead of acrylic topcoat before panel lining?
@@badsenseoftumor9126 i think it's always safer to do it that way
@ikhsansetiabudi925 hello bro, new to the hobby and want to explore a little bit more. using top coat and then pannel lining using acrylic paint and thinner for clean up, it should do okay?
and it should be TOP COAT > PANEL LINE > WATER DECAL > TOP COAT in patern?
thank you so much! it would be a alot of help.
@@Heimonsterr if u panel line using Gundam Panel Liner (acrylic base) you don't need to use topcoat first, but if u use non-acrylic panel line (like lacquer and enamel) it's better to use top coat first. The most important thing is use the gloss one if you wanna panel line it, use flat as your finishing coat
Top coat (gloss), panel line, decal, top coat (flat or whatever you want)
Or
Panel line, decal, top coat (flat or whatever you want)
Flat is the best finish imo
@@Heimonsterr it's been over a year since i last build gunpla bro😂
Just dropping in to remind people that X-20 Enamel Thinner goes for like, $20 with online retailers, if they even have it at all, and Zippo lighter fluid costs about 10x less, and can be bought at pretty much any gas station or smoke shop, and it works just as well as proper enamel thinner.
Love you content
im new in gunpla and i want to learn more about things about gunpla. thanks
Zippo lighter fluid works wonders removing the Tamiya panel liner if you don't have the proper thinner.
Thank you
Nice video brooo 🔥🔥🔥
Thanks for your awesome videos! Bit it is so hard to get ahold of the X-20! It's driving me nuts!
Great video. But I think it is important to mention that Tamiya panel line accent colors CAN CRACK YOUR GUNPLA SURFACE if used on bare plastics. To avoid cracking, apply a layer of top coat ( gloss/semi-gloss, NOT matte as the surface is too rough to let the ink flow) before panel lining.
Tamiya panel line color is very easy to use because it comes in pre-mixed already. But, the thinner can make the plastic quite brittle. Super important to know.
So what’s the safe way of applying Tamiyas panel accent color without breaking the joints? Starting my very first MG soon and don’t wanna mess it up
Scott Valdez There are 2 Ways. 1. The safe way: apply top coat then panel line. 2. The not so safe way: apply tamiya panel line without top coat. Try your best to reduce pooling of the color and hope for the plastic to not to crack. Or, you can use the gundam panel liner marker, it’s not as easy as using the tamiya but it won’t crack your plastic.
@@glenn7338 ive read somewhere that gundam markers (pour type) are enamel based as well
should they be fine on bare plastic?
@@Searae well… I’m assuming since they’re specifically made for gundams… yes
Very helpful tutorial. Thanks a bunch for keeping it to the point, too!
Great video! What's best to use - acrylic or enamel? And any guide on how many colours to use? Thanks!
Helpful Video.
1:15 all my question for the longest time it's answered within 30 seconds thank you so much
Thank you!
Is the gundam marker a good alternative as well for panel lining?
Thank you sir😊😊 begginer here
Another solid one... definitely giving a few minutes to dry is a tip I'm hearing being dropped about Panel lining that i think is vital.
it's always best to clear coat your paint first to protect it and help the lines run nicer, and the longer you hold the applicator on the line the lines ink will flow longer.
So can you please provide me like each step you did for panel lining? Like clear coat -> accent color -> finish coat? Also which clear coat are you using?
i really need this tutorial...thank you sir
