Truth be told, your video was the one who awoken my sleeping love for gundams. now that I bought my first gunpla I'm really thankful that you created this tutorials for a lot of beginners like me. thank you so much!
i was looking for scribing tutor for today, more than 5 video still can't satisfy me, then studiog upload new video about scribing tutor and it answer my question. what a coincidence
I was today years old when I learned that after years of holding scale models in a padded vice and performing weird yoga poses with a metal rule and a scribing tool, that this method was even a thing.......I don't build Gunpla, I ended up here via a winding TH-cam rabbit hole, but I'm delighted I found this. As someone in a different branch of the wider modelling hobby, thank you!
Nice! This tutorial is what I need. I just started scribing this morning and only used a hobby knife and masking tape. I prayed to the scribing gods too lol. Again, concise and full of information. Best tip, "don't be afraid to start".
Thank you so much for this video tutorial. Two things to consider: 1. We love the flow of information. Super smoothly edited. 2. Not only you give instructions about how to do it but also you give extra tips and how to fix common mistakes ...and those points make this tutorial a very good one. Thanks! Also we want to tell that we have started crafting gunpla a few months ago and we are on the point of buying a chisel and we found the one that you show for newbies on this videos and that has giving us the conficende to buy it and starting to panel-line our next build. Thank you so much!
So, another thing you can do to fix damage, mistakes or blemishes, is snip off small bits of the spru in the color of the part and mix them in a small amount of extra thin liquid cement. If you're removing seem lines between parts, you want it kinda thin, but if you're filling gaps or fixing scribe mistakes you're going to want it to be more plastic than glue. It creates a kind of putty in the exact color of the kit. Just apply some to the problem area, let it dry, and sand it flush. And boom, good as new.
Great video. Tips from watching the video and you didn't mention. While scribing, have a pivot point. The hand that's doing the scribing, the last or last 2 finger can pivot or rest on the other hand holding the parts, in this way, the movement will be greatly reduce and mistakes will be lesser. (As shown in your video)
If the groove is too deep, You can also use tamiya cement to melt down some frames of the same colors (that's why I don't throw them away) and use it as a putty. That way, you don't need to paint the parts just to hide the crazy mistakes you've made.
I love your tutorial videos. They are very informative. I am building my first Gunpla and before my tools arrive on the mail, I'm gonna make sure that I learn enough information.
"Give that surface a good old scrub~ Heh yeah boi~" Memes aside, great tutorial. Definitely simple enough to follow and instructions seem crystal clear 👌🏻
Actually this is one of the best tutorial ive seen. Pls add some tutorial panel line with different equipment (ink, pen etc) shading etc, sanding, equipments suggestionnfor those who are starting like ur scribber from the expensive and lowbudget. Sorry for the request but ur so good ao maybe u can help not only me but those who want to enter gunpla. for those who want to start i reccommend this page thanks for the knowledge and technique. Ps sorry for the aggresive comment if i am..just got amazed how good the tutorial ghahhaha
Sir thank you very much. I learned from your tutorial video, although I was looking for a clearer explanation, I was confused, but after watching your video. Wow, I understood too much, and it's clear, even though I don't have equipment, and a gundam, that's my dream. thank you so much
I should have rewatched this before scribing. I think one thing that should be emphasized is how LIGHT those first few passes are. AND TRUST YOUR TAPE!
@@moosemonger6967 If that was the case, they wouldn't be out of the product, would they? I might buy some random stuff, but not if they don't have the main item I'm looking for. No purchase. Love your videos mate, I'm pretty new to this hobby and need to learn a lot, and I mean A LOT cuz I'm busy with my work and won't be having much time to spend with my kits (I only built like 5 kits so far) but I want to make every kit that I build next look dashing, your vids are super helpful 0w0)
Thanks for the tips!! Now I don't think I'll have a problem trying to scribe my part. 👍👍keep up the great work an i am looking forward to your next video.
Amazing tute! Has given me the confidence to try it out A couple of qs; So you don't need to hold the blade parallel to the line? and, are there any tips or specific techniques for scribing on heavily curved surfaces? Thanks!
Nice tutorial. Hope to try my hand at it for the first time soon. I was inspired by the results you got with the janky home made scrubber from a pin when yours broke. I’ll give that a try too!
The best way to do it is to study them. StudioG himself will look at other people’s work to get ideas. The more you think about panel lines in relation to the geometry of the panel/part (lines are usually parallel and intersect at specific angles), and the more you practice, the easier it will be to figure out where you want to put your lines. It takes a lot of practice.
usually i create it from mix of cutting leftover runner from parts (usually belong and mr.hobby or tamiya cement in glass bottle or metal bowl...then apply it on those parts....this way also can be a solution for leftover runner and if you don't wanna repaint it just fixing some damage, like wrong cutting, nub mark holes, etc...
omg like a year or so ago there were like no tutorials on this stuff, so when i had to figure it out on my own to make my PG rx-78-2 into the ver3.0 one, made a lot of mistakes. This video is great btw, but if you want some quick tips, DONT RUSH, dont go "oh its like a little line ill free hand it" because it will go at a slight angle and look terrible, also scribe very lightly, otherwise even if you have tape it might be a little wonky and if you do it hard the first time you cant correct it. id highly recommend the tamiya scriber 2, its wonderful, maybe if you want some finer lines then the ones in this video look better for that
why the hell my notif didn't work on studio G? i'm going to sue youtube for this lol. Great tutorial again Studio G hope to see more of your Tutorial Tuesday.
These videos are really helping the community 👍 I'm going to use these tips , looks like you are going to hit 40k soon and you only finished the 30k competition 😂 all well deserved 👏👏👏
Things I've figured out today (my first day scribing): ABS plastic is way harder than styrene. Model kits are so easy and clean, things like Transformers figures that are shot in ABS plastic are harder, with much more resistance and the surface quality isn't as smooth. Also, maybe it is just the MIG tape I got (the only one my hobby shop had), but it WILL NOT stick to any type of curve...
If you are an absolute beginner, get putty or superglue. Since you can and will make lots of mistakes, you can fix those mistakes. Incidentally, you can also intentionally make mistakes so you can make a better line, after that you can fix your mistakes by putty or a lil bit of superglue
Thanks for the great tutorial. Wishing I had time but just a fun hobby and no time left after adulting. Besides after I give my gundams away for kids to play with. Cause what kids don't like a great action figure to play with. Also it will get more interested in their future and learning great skills.
There are actual action figures that can be played with ( pretty roughly by the kiddos ) can't think of exactly what they are called I'll try to look and edit my comment with them .edit It looks like they are Gundam universe action figures
It's kinda hard to see how you apply the tape. Are you applying it alongside both sides of the lines? Just one? It would be nice to know specifically how to lay down tape in conjunction with the position of the lines.
depends on the impact you want on the kit. In general I would say use the original panel line size on the kit as a reference then go up/down by a couple of mm
I find your video very educative. But I find hard time to design a new part like combining color, make panel line, or other designs, do you like an apps or planner that you can share? Thank you
Thanks for this tutorial man! It is just great!! I am going to start customizing my gunpla and was wondering, are you using any type of specific blade? Like Madworks Chisel Blade or Tamiya...? At least the holder seems like Tamiya Modelers Knife. Also I would want to know the width of it as I am having trouble with a 1/100 MG and wanted to make it as clean as yours dude!
So why do you have to sand after you scribe the lines? Couldn't you just leave it? I can understand if you messed up and need to keep the surface smooth again. But what does sanding it after your done with the line do? Won't that slowly make the line go away and make it smooth again? Sorry I'm new to this hobby so hopefully this isn't a dumb question
When you cut into it even if slowly normally you end up with like a burr of types on the edge of the new cut line. He's not sanding much the first passes with the 600 remove said tiny burr and the higher grits just work to make it smooth again.

It was a good site before they started sponsoring people. Once everyone found out about it... well, they ended up like all the other ones.
@@Shin_Lona How is it bad for them to have more revenue coming in? Would that not mean they have more money to put into more products for us to buy?

How do u make sure the panel line is identical both side? Eg: both legs, both hands. Or you just eyeball it?
Plan them first, using edges and existing lines and measure the scribbing from there
either make a template from pla plate or use 2 masking tape to mirror the lines
Nice guide bro, bro after this can you make some guide for painting?

thankyou for the tutorial it really help me the beginner~~
Where can I buy the scriber that you're using? Not the one that you've linked and has the red handle, but the exact one you're using?
there are various chisel size, from 0.1 to 1mm. Is there a tip on which one to use on certain situation?
depends on the impact you want on the kit. In general I would say use the original panel line size on the kit as a reference then go up/down by a couple of mm
Can I check, why do you polish with the 3000 grit, what does polishing do, other than make it shiny?

hi..what points (sizes) would you recommend for panel linning a 1/144 scale models . Tia
What size of panel lining scriber do you suggest for basic and beginner scribing? Just want to deepen and make the panel line clearer.
Great video, very detailed. When you place the paneling tape over the area, is it placed along the traced lines or over the entire piece?
i think you put it only along the lines, so it can act as a guide for your chisel.
I find your video very educative. But I find hard time to design a new part like combining color, make panel line, or other designs, do you like an apps or planner that you can share? Thank you

but sometimes I still confuse to make some nice line design. Can you tech us the way how to make a great design of scribing line gunpla?
Ah I don't actually have great designs yet but what I do is I always refer to pictures on google or Instagram for awesome scribing designs :)
in general the panel lines should be 90 degrees or more if it has a pointy bit just add another line on the tip so it's not pointy anymore.
Amazing video!
Great tutorial G!!
9:58 i recently discovered the same method in using that basic type tamiya putty
Can you recommend me some brand of panel line tape because i don't know which type i should look for. Tks for reading, from Vietnam with love. :))))
The brand I use is from a company called Hi-Q Parts, iirc.
@studioG where did you get that black and silver tip Chisel Scribe ?
So why do you have to sand after you scribe the lines? Couldn't you just leave it? I can understand if you messed up and need to keep the surface smooth again. But what does sanding it after your done with the line do? Won't that slowly make the line go away and make it smooth again? Sorry I'm new to this hobby so hopefully this isn't a dumb question

any tips for curvy part like Gyan /Dom(leg-part) and how to correctly use guide plate.
Hey Justin! Love the videos and I’ve recently got back into gunpla (non custom builds) and I want to start doing custom builds. Anyway you could go over a airbrush and paint video? Thank you!
Hi! Budget modeler here! I was just wondering if I can use a regular scotch tape as a "starter alternative" for the panel lining tape?
Not really. However you can try out using two or three tapes stacked on each other to give it a thicker edge. But the problem is it's too soft of a material. But do try it out on a test piece as it might actually work! 😃
Studio G came here late but I'll keep that in mind for my next kit :)
