  • Josel's 1972 240Z speaks for itself, and does so in loud and glorious straight 6 fashion! Equipped with triple Mikuni carbs, a lightened flywheel, and a host of other "driving feel" mods, this Datsun is designed to bring a smile to its driver's face.

    It's a good job that car isn't very fast, gives you more time to listen to that glorious engine at wide open throttle.

    Psyched! This is one of my favorite reviews. I think it's cool Zygrene is doing cars like this, because it shows a 40 plus year old car from a modest student budget. That's where many people start their relationship with a classic car. Cracked windshield and all man, so damn real. It reminds me of wrenching my first 510 back in the day. I think it's awesome he's getting some recognition for what he's doing. And let's face it, his L24 has an almost pornographic exhaust note.

    You learn more about a car watching someone have to react to it like this then anything I ever saw on Top Gear. This is quite fun. Thanks.

    I have a 71' with triple Weber 40s, that and the 5 speed really made the car better. I have a rear disk upgrade and that really helps everything as well. I got the Techno Toy Tuning strut braces too, those guys make some nice stuff. I might do a mid range cam. The first clue a car isn't a 71 is the fuel door didn't have a chrome lock knob after 71' so if you just see one drive by you can spot that right away. I never thought they were like an E Type, those are much more roundy, I think they borrowed a lot more from the Ferrari's of the 60's and you can see the Daytonas at the same time as the Zs were a continuation of that shape. Even the Triumph GT6 looked a bit like these. They are as fast as you need for these kinds of roads. Modern faster cars are not really fun for me, you are much more insulated from the experience. I did the paint last and it was nice not giving a crap about parking etc... Now it's painted and I have to be careful. I mainly painted it so I could get rid of the side trim they added at dealers in the US, they riveted right through the body so we had to plug those up.

    Such an inspiration to see I'm not the only college student with a project classic Japanese car! Love your z seems to remind me a lot of my 77 Celica coupe! Especially the steering feel and the throttle response. All the little squeaks and rattles that make the car feel more human than mechanical sometimes. Love your car!

    Good job guys. This looks like Skyline Blvd. or Highway 9. What a blast.
    I used to have a '71 240Z during most of the 80's and early 90's. It was a rust bucket, but I drove that thing to hell and back. I really would love another, but right now I'm restoring a Datsun RL411 Bluebird SSS, the precursor to the 510. I'm in the Bay Area too, so hope to see this Z around. Cheers.

    "Isn't fast... Shakes and rattles... Brakes need a lot of pressure...Not much power" I'm not meaning to bash or anything, but it's funny hearing a perspective from a driver far more familiar with modern driving and built sports cars.
    The rift and discussion regarding the owners budget was a bit awkward as well. Appreciate the car and owner's work for what it is, not stressing shortcomings and what it could do with.
    Then again, this is coming from a jealous owner of a 260Z, who's just trying to stop his daily from crumbling apart in the rain. Other than that, pretty fun video

    negative offset wheels will do that... hit a bump and it jerks the wheel. thats why i'm leaning towards not going widebody with my 240z...

    • @peanutbutterrunner
      @peanutbutterrunner 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      there is steps you can take to fix this issue. when you lower the car the tie rods go up at an angle and as you hit a bump it jerks on the tie rod and ultimately the steering wheel. look up roll center adjuster.

    • @InvincibleExtremes
      @InvincibleExtremes 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      jeremy kion that doesnt fix the bearing center though...

    • @peanutbutterrunner
      @peanutbutterrunner 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The upgrades to your motor have acheived nothing as far as horsepower? SUs and the factory exhaust manifold wd be an improvement as far as horsepower one cd argue. Factory horsepower was 150 but perhaps not to the rear wheels. The common mistake S30 owners make is oversized exhaust. 2 and 1/4 inch was factory for a reason. 2.5 you will lose throttle response and horsepower unless you upgrade the head or long block.

    the 75-78 280z had a much stiffer chassis and MUCH heavier steering as they weighed 500lb more but still had much of the character of the 240.

    • @racketman2u
      @racketman2u 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      efi has nothing to do with torque, engine size & stroke, compression ratio, cam timing and manifolding do. there's no doubt the 280 was quite a lot heavier, the anti-intrusion bars in the doors seemed to be half of that, as the doors shut with a nice solid 'clunk'. you must be deaf, no 4-banger sounds like that, and a straight six even sounds different to a v6.

    I have owned many of these cars (240-280ZX) and love them. They handle great, rear wheel drive and have a great power to weight ratio. However, I disagree with you saying these are the best sounding cars ever. To me they sound too much like a 4 banger (which I find to be a very annoying sound) and do not even remotely sound as good as a stout V8.

      Retroman
      I disagree.
      it sounds different than a V8 (which i also love)
      but it sounds no worse.

    Three carbs eh? Must be fuel injected

    • @retroman3075
      @retroman3075 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      240-260zs were carburated, but starting in 1975 (I think), the 280z and the later 280ZX were fuel injected.

      Retroman lol it was a joke, I know it was carbureted, if it had carburetors it can't be fuel injected haha

      Societal Preferences
      a bit, yes.
      but one of these l series sixes cammed big and properly tuned do a pretty good V8 impression at idle, transitioning into a ferrari-esque wail at redline. Its really a unique combination that has to be experienced to be appreciated.
      i miss mine immensely.
