A correction: I said "cast iron pistons" in the video. My tongue slipped as I mentioned the cast iron block earlier. I meant to say cast aluminum instead.
Today on iconic engines it's time for some real old school cool! It's time to step back in past! it's time for some 70s grooves! it's time for the beautifully simple, obscenely reliable Nissan L24, 26, 28 inline six engine!
To be able to fully understand and appreciate where the Nissan L24 L26 and L28 engine comes from we have to go back in time to the early to mid-60s. Back in the early 60s Datsun was selling the 410 sedan in the United States, and while they did get Pininfarina to design it to make it look more European and distinguished the car had one major problem that was hurting Datsun sales in the states. It was slow. The 410 was equipped with a pretty miserable inline 4 cylinder pushrod engine and Mr. K could see his 410 cars struggling to keep up with Traffic on the US freeway. Merging onto the Freeway in the 410 was a nightmare. So when it was time to introduce the successor to the 410 which was the Datsun 510 Mr. K saw an opportunity to make things right. He went to Japan to convince the big shots in the Nissan HQ to give the Datsun 510 a brand new engine, since the original plan was for the 510 to have the same pushrod misery engine as the 410. Eventually Mr. K managed to convince HQ to give the Datsun 510 a brand new overhead cam 1.6 liter that made 96hp and was called the L16. It would later serve as the basis for its bigger brother, the L24. Unlike the 411, the 510 no longer was slow and no longer had problems keeping up with freeway traffic. On top of that it had a great four wheel independent suspension and was actually really fun to drive, and still is today.
The roots of the Nissan L engines can be followed way back to a licensed overhead valve design made by Mercedes that was being manufactured by Prince Motor Co in the early 60s.
The first inline six in the L series was called the L20. It sucked. But Nissan engineers quickly fixed this. For L series inline six attempt two they decided to use the new L16 design as a starting point to develop the next generation of inline six in the L series. It was called the L20A and it didn't suck.
Right around the time the inline six L series was being developed Mr K. was putting his master plan into action. Ever since coming to the States to build the Datsun dealer network he wanted to bring an exciting Datsun car to the market. Something that everyone would want to own. The 510 was great, but Mr. K wanted more, he wanted something that would compete with the likes of Jaguar. He wanted a sports car with a sports car engine. And he got it! After more lobbying with the Nissan HQ in Japan and being very involved in the entire design process Mr. K got the Fairlady Z. The car was everything Mr. K envisioned, except the name which he changes to 240z in the states. And to make it go, it a 2.4 liter inline six engine, called the L24, built on the base created by the L16 and l20a! It all came together in a package that was not only fast, but beautiful and sexy, and desirable, and fun to drive and to top it all off. It was affordable. So what about the L26 and L28 Nissan engines? Well they came out later with the 260z and 280z and were for a large part an attempt to keep up US emission controls that forced reductions in ignition timing and compression ratios.
When it comes to the specs the Nissan L24 engine is beautifully simple and because of this its incredibly reliable. The L24 L26 L28 Nissan engines are all a cast iron engine block and an alloy reverse flow cylinder head. The head is a SOHC design with only two valves per cylinder.
When it comes to tuning the L24 L26 L28 Datsun Nissan engines they are a bit different than modern engines and ultimately limited in maximum power potential, largely because of the outdated cylinder head design. But they score incredibly high when it comes to engine sound, style and charm. Triple Webers on a l24 l26 l28, or triple Mikuni carbs for that matter, will sound absolutely incredible and be extremely fun to drive. Remember the S30 chassis, the 240z, 260z, 280z are all very lightweight old-school analogue cars and even with the stock 150hp they are incredibly fun to drive. Squeezing an extra 50 hp out of the l24 l26 l28 engines is actually a lot easier than from modern engines that are already tuned from the factory, so more fun is on tap. If you want obscene power from a 240z, 260z, or 280z you will need to swap out l24 l26 l28.

Tell me what you think the 4.0 Nissan truck is the same block as the 3.7 Z engine., if the 4.0 is a great engine. Do you think the Honda 2.4 engine a few years ago in Hondas is better than today's 2.0 engine. Is the 2.0 engine much lighter than the 2.4 engine? What do you think of Toyota's new Camry & corolla 4 cylinder engines? What do you think of the new Mazda 4 cylinder that the fuel explodes like a diesel. They talk like the new Toyota 4 cylinder engines have better heads than Hondas for efficiency of fuel combustion & better low end torque. I have heard all new Honda engines are trouble, is that right.

      No
      700hp...
      Yes.
But I agree that swapping to the right engine it is a better value. Because why spend $30,000 rebuilding an old engine, when you could buy a new engine for $700 and add be ahead of where you would be with $6,000 of mods. Or apply some forced induction and get those absurd numbers.

If you can find an L28ET, they already make 180hp/203 lb-ft from the factory, and it's neither hard, uncommon, nor expensive to make 250hp+. But where the turbo L6 truly shines is not horsepower, but torque; these things are super stump-pullers with the right setup!

Very well said and all true. I've been the owner 1970 240Z for 40 years. It makes a great sound that still turns heads today. Far from stock with triple Weber 40, Arias pistons 40 over, comp cam 490 lift/290 duration, electronic ignition and a bunch of other stuff. Cheap to build and loves being run between 3000 to 7000 rpm. Puts out @300 hp on a 2200 lb car. But it's at home just cruising along and idles fine in traffic. Runs good on pump gas and is a beast on 104 octane. Oh, and as you mentioned it's a great DIY engine to work on. And this setup has been on the car since 1984.

I worked with Dave Rebello in the mid 80's in Concord, CA. He built a killer L20B for my 510 that I raced in the SCCA for a couple years and several engines & chassis for friends and co-workers. After I moved back to So Cal in late 85, I went to work at M & G Z cars in Montclair for about 10 years. I built many, many L series engines for many customers. Most of them stock or mildly built, a few turbo monsters. I've stripped down countless Z cars to the bare tub and rebuilt back to new bolt by bolt. I was always impressed with the L series engines. After they closed doors I worked at a few Nissan dealerships in the area, in 2001 at technician training in Costa Mesa I had the chance to meet Mr. K.
He was very cordial and seemed very pleased that I so much enjoyed being a mechanic. I feel very fortunate to have met & worked with some really talented people in my career.
Two years ago I ran into an old customer, he was still driving the 83 280ZX I rebuilt for him, we spent a good time catching up that afternoon, glad to see that car again so many years later !

I have a 1970 240Z looks like the day my Grandfather got it. We have kept it in my shop since 1985 and take it out every other weekend. She only has 21567 miles on her and runs like new and we have everything that came with the car (my child) when my Grandfather bought it at Datsun CarMart . Has no rust anywhere and paint is like new I would not be able to ever let her go, no matter the price!

The L- Series engine is super underrated, especially by people that have never wrenched on one or driven a car with one. As an owner of a 73 240Z with the matching numbers L24, you don't know how many times I've taken it to car shows and people have said "you should swap the engine out for something else". Although no, they will never make as much hp and torque as a small block Chevy or LS or whatever, they make plenty of power and torque to make what ever they're installed in a hoot to drive. And as you stated, they are easily tune able. Forged internals from the factory. The stock L24 in 1969 made 150 hp from 2.4 liters!!! With a non cross flow head!! On the gas of that time!!! Look at what other 6 cylinder engines for sale were making from almost double the displacement! And the sound L series make!!! The L series is a perfect match for the S30 chassis, period. Only thing better is RB lol

Awesome power plant for a 50 year old engine, reliable almost bulletproof apart from the mechanical fuel pump which was prone to fail due to the rubber membrane splitting, also the clutch wasn't up to the power output, from memory I found that I got about 6 to 8 thousand miles before it began to slip. The good news is these are easily rectified with more modern alternatives. Looking forward to rebuilding it with all the improved parts. Really glad i never sold it even after 47 years.

You really make me motivated to get back into the shop and get to work! Not well known but are such an iconic engine in the retro Datsun / Nissan arena, so simple, strong and easy to extract massive power plus a very interesting history. Diesel fuel..... We got them in Japanese import cars here in New Zealand.... Also a lot of motors were imported in to fit to older cars like Holden / Ford etc the biggest problem was people would wind the kms back on diesel cars because we pay tax for kms traveled (road users charges) separately here in New Zealand. So you never really knew what kms a diesel car had done. My motor was removed from a Nissan skyline.... It come out factory with LD28! And 5 speed. Did 160kmh easy... a real charcoal grenade!

The main thing about the L series motors (mainly the L24) is the car they're in: the 240z, with a weight of only 2,200 ish lbs. The power to weight ratio is insane.
I used to own a 1970 Datsun 240z, (VIN was 0001590 !!!!)...only upgrades were headers, full exhaust and finely tuned SU carbs and it ran GREAT. Sounded like a beast too. Back in the day I was at an illegal street race and I beat a mid 90's 4.6L V8 Mustang (which has 215 hp) by about 3 to 4 car lengths. I had only around 160 to 170 hp but again, my car was light as a feather.
L28 Turbo swaps into 240z's are awesome and make the most beautiful unique exhaust note as well. When I bought a 300zx TT, my buddy in his 240z turbo managed to hang with me with on the FWY.
My 300zx TT was still stock at 300 hp and his 240z had 180 hp with stock turbo and boost, though his Z wasn't running at full capacity as it had some tuning issues but it still kept up with me.
All in all, love the L series motors...grew up with them; my family owned a Maxima that had an L28 and the aforementioned 240z. 😁

I'm very late to this video but hopefully someone reads this and finds it interesting.
Great video! but I can't help but feel that the greatest incarnations of this engines were in racing.
The racing versions (most of the times made exclusively for works teams) were the pinnacle of this family of engines but they are very little known.
The 6 cil. had two different racing heads. One known as LR or Safari, which was a new cast with bigger valves and higher compression ratio and another called LY which was a complete redesign crossflow, hemi/pentroof, wide included angle head. Both extremely rare.
For the 4 cil. there was also an LR head but the most wild one was the LZ, a super high revving DOHC head used in touring racing, Formula Pacific and World Rallies and, when paired with a huge turbo became the heart of Nissan's Group 5 Super Silhouette cars in the 80s like the Skyline, Silvia/Gazzelle and Bluebird.
I recently did a dissertation about this engine family and I gathered a lot of info about them, like works race engine catalogs from the back then and homologation papers for race components from the FIA historic database, so if the creator of this video or anyone of you is interested just tell me or if you have the time and the desire, research on your own.

I really had some awesome times with the 2.8 version we had it in a datsun 280c and the 280zx in Trinidad and Tobago back in the 80s 90s. What we did with the carburetors we had 3 webers extractors 3.5 inch exhaust full race cams and direct port nos yes nos was boss. Also we installed electric fans to less work for the crank and a must was MSD for the sparkplugs. We use cool air intakes we passed the incoming air through a cold box. We took out the automatic for a five forward gearbox and installed a 2000 def. It was extremely fast as a 12 year old boy I was start struck the was is sound. And with a full race it was super aggressive. That is what have me hooked on cars. Sadly the 4g63 I rocking now not given me the same feeling as the 280c. Our friend had the same set up with one ommition instead of the 3 webber he had a 750 Holley carburetors with a high PSI Holley pump. Awesome times I tell you.

My first car was a 510 with the single carb L16S engine. The SSS had the L16H engine with the twin carbs. I could rev that motor to 8000 rpm's without a problem, and I could do 30 ft black stripes in second with it. I could get 47m/h in first, 78m/h in second, 112m/h in third, and then fourth could put another 5m/h onto it, but by then the drag was killing it. I know it was overreading by 3.4%, but that engine was a true marvel. Miss it today still.

So it was in the early '80's. I had rebuilt the Z-240/auto a couple of times, had some overheating, just planed the head and bolted her back on and kept going. I was back and forth to the oil fields back then and was coming back from OKC with a few hundred miles to go when the cam snapped leaving me running on the front 3 cylinders. I tried pulling the back 3 plugs to lessen load, but air/fuel mixture blew everywhere so I put them back in. But the L-24 started and ran on the front 3 cylinders. Only problem was she wanted to die below 15 hundred revs and I didn't have a clutch to ease her up to speed. But I was running the interstate and the few times I had to stop I'd rev her up in neutral and cram her into low and we'd jerk for a moment or two and then we'd be rolling. Got me home and I learned about planing the head's cam towers side as well as its block side.
She's still parked in my big metal building. 300 and some thousand miles and was NEVER out ran on the highway.

I recently bought a 280zx. I love it. After watching this, I need to get new exhaust headers asap - update: wow these things are hard to get off. Gotta remove the whole intake manifold and fuel rail just to get to it 😅

In the early 90's, a friend bought a 280z from a rally car driver who was going to jail....he drove it back home, and then offered to sell it to me...i should have bought it.... Amazing car!!!...and what ever that mechanic race car driver guy did to it, my friend was told, "its been tweaked to the max"....scary powerful for such a light small car
