  • Trump tightens his grip on the GOP ahead of this weekend’s CPAC speech, Texas Democrats analyze why they came up short in November, and new Data for Progress/Vote Save America polling shows overwhelming bipartisan support for voting and democracy reforms. Jon Favreau and Dan Pfeiffer discuss Donald Trump's appearance and CPAC and whether or not Joe Biden should spend more time talking about the former president. Then, they discuss the future of our democracy in regards to the Latino vote and HR1/the For The People Act.

Crooked believes that we need a better conversation about politics, culture, and the world around us-one that doesn’t just focus on what’s broken, but what we can do to fix it. At a time when it’s increasingly easy to feel cynical or hopeless, former Obama staffers Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor have created a place where people can have sane conversations that inform, entertain, and inspire action. In 2017 they started Crooked with Pod Save America-a no-bullshit conversation about politics. Since then, we continue to add shows, voices, and opportunities for activism, because it’s up to all of us to do our part to build a better world. That’s it. End of mission.

On the topic of the latino voters, because we are put under a single umbrella term, a lot of the analysis misses the point of rupture in between latino communities, which is that latinos aren't a single people. As you very well said, Jon: "latinos are not a monolithic community". Latinos are made up of mexicans, cubans, guatemalans, brazilians, etc all of those are separate communities within the latino voters. So, the cuban communities may vote a different way than the mexicans, so on and so forth. I think this is something you need to identify when dissecting data, instead of simply affirming, like many media outlets, in headline that "Latinos Turned Out More For Trump".

Well said. It is very aggravating to be lumped into the Latino group that "turned out for Trump." I realize the stereotype is that we are ignorant, but not all of us are fools and we can see and understand that this man does not stand for ANY American. He is sowing division for HIS OWN GAINS and not for anyone else INCLUDING his white supremacist followers. Of which he would not have anything to do with because they are not in "HIS social standing." He uses everyone to his own ends. And when he is done using them, he throws them to the wolves.

    • @ranball2943

they did that. in the same breath that they presented that data point, they clarified that there are latino republicans and latino democrats and that more of the republican latinos turned out to vote than democratic latino voters, inside those two different demographics. the summary of the data point is "more republican latinos turned out for the incumbent than democratic latinos for biden" not "more latinos are republicans". you are correct in that they did not describe the political breakdown of individual nationalities or ethnicities inside of the umbrella demographic that, lazily, is used in the US most often, "latino", but that is not the same thing as lumping the majority of latino voters into "republican". I am sure many have done that, but that is not what was said here.

If we do well by the people, then the already 2/3-3/4 messed up part of the gop Congress can hate us all they want. We'll be helping the same ones. Just have to make sure we're safe.... Literally a swat team on our side ready to appear whenever they act up.

There is historic LGBTQ legislation that just passed the house and you lead with Trump and CPAC? Can only Jon Lovett talk about gay stuff and how to pressure the Senate to get this passed? There are people doing amazing work who can lead us to action and they get no coverage. This legislation actually affects my life. Maybe next week you can reiterate all the homophobic stuff that comes out of CPAC and make me even more despondent.

Passing the House is good but I would think they'll focus on the Senate for most policy updates since it is the deciding factor unfortunately.

I'm glad that Jon acknowledged that Latinos are not a monolith. Getting their vote won't happen with a one-size fits all solution. Many factors have to be considered, including the state that they live in. Texans consider themselves Texans first, Latinos and Americans 2nd or 3rd. But the Latino issue is the Democratic Party issue writ large: how to include people who are reachable but who are socially conservative, who would benefit from Democratic policies but without alienating anyone.

Give citizenship to all DACA kids. That's how Reagan secured those Latino votes, by amnesty. It's not cultural it's loyalty to Reagan for giving them citizenship and the ability to chain immigration all their family members.

I have a friend who came from El Salvador. My father knows some Bosnian immigrants. They all say they had to go through a very rigorous and difficult process to become citizens, and why should other people get a free pass? If you want something, you should be willing to work for it.

There was also plenty of voter suppression, including tons of it in Texas.

    • @audioenthusiast2817

Why is it called voter suppression? Why are things like voter Id's bad? We need an Id to do everything else of importance in the world. We have to have a driver's license. We get carded at restaurants when we drink. We have to show those same Ids when we buy alcohol at stores. We need Ids for guns. I'd think casting a ballot would be just as important. Perhaps I'm wrong, but hit me.
