For those struggling with getting Magic Lantern RAW Up & Running on the EOS M2, here is an Easy Setup/Settings Video. It's a great portable camera that can deliver fantastic 14-Bit RAW Footage without breaking the bank. why does photo mode freezes? do we have options to shoot photo in eos m2? ive been wanting the focus peaking feature.

Yes you can take photos. Just disable raw video in tab 3, restart camera then disable crop mode in ml menu 3rd tab, then you can take photos.

WAIT WHAT... after getting my EOS M2 in 2016 I was so excited but shocked to learn there was no ML support for the model, compared to the original EOS M. I eventually gave up after multiple attempts even years later to see if there was ML compatibility for the M2, but with no luck. And now I'm just finding out there IS MAGIC LANTERN. Wowwww Christmas has come early, thank you!.
Haha, yep! Makes a big difference for these cameras. The M is a more advanced camera though with ML.

Ah no, this build is only for the M2. You would think they require the same build, but they need different ones. Currently, there is only one. But this is still a little great camera for TH-cam or Travel Stuff if you have one lying around!

It would have saved lot of time and effort if ML dev team shared a summary video showing how did they ported this 1080P from EOS M.I could then jump start to port other RAW movie modes to m2.Thanks a lot.

Best settings is what was shown here in the vid. There's not much else. You can shoot 16:9 or record 2.35:1, 1.85:1 or other aspect ratios in camera. I like 16:9 and then add letterbox in post.

After installing magic lantern onto my Cannon EOS. M1, do I always need to use the magic lantern software , or can I also use the camera in its basic factory default modes (photo and video)?

Question, are there any "native" settings in the Canon settings menus that are very important / make a difference? My M2 footage always opens really dark in MLV App, but the M always opens as originally exposed / shot.

In the M2 ML Settings, 1st tab, try turning off "Exposure Override" or something like that. Use Histogram to check EV is not above 1 but rather below. Also you can turn on false colour just to check your exposure is accurate. Blue means shadows are being crushed resulting in noisy footage and red/yellow result in blown out highlights.
Zeek! I am compelled to buy EOS M again. :-) Two quick questions. 1) 1 GB = 1 Minute right? Recording 1080 MCM rewire? 2) Conversion process from MLV file (let's say 10 mintute total footage) to MP4 or MOV takes how long on PC? I have windows 10 Dell, i7 2.7 GHz quadcore 16gb RAM pc.
1. Yes around there.
2. Exporting as prores or mp4 probably around 50 mins - 1 hour. If you export as DNG for Davinci/Premiere, then less than 10 minutes.

i want to take Ricoh gr iii for photo... and just curious how M good for photo... it is APS-C too, i can take 28mm too - how it handles focus in photo? and auto exposure with aperture priority?
i dont know, watching your vids for so long, want this little cameras (using R6 as main), is it ok compared to GR iii?
Is it ok deal to take M as photo camera (sure i will use lantern too) but interested in street photo side, how battery handles this mode?
I used to have the R6. The EOS M takes awesome photos, I really like it. It comes down to the user experience. Obviously no viewfinder, but i'm okay with that.
Thanks for posting this. I want to buy a camera for a youtube studio setup and some outdoor nature filming. I can get a good deal on the m2 and like the wi-fi feature. My question is Can I shoot in for 4 or 5k with magic lantern on the m2, or do I need to buy the M?
but how to setting :
1) ML eos M2 in video mode to get 9,8 bit DR ?
2) unlimited time recording in this video mode (near perfect for long documentary)
3) make time lapse for eos m2
4) the external audio recording is works ?
5) how to combo setting, canon cinestyle (near canon log) plus Magic Lantern to get better dynamic range ?

1 - it's 14 bit raw or 10/12 bit. If you want 8-bit, turn of raw video, crop mode movie crop in the ML Movie Tab.
2 - Yes continuous Raw
3 - No Time-lapse for the M2, unless in the ML Menu, there is the interverlmeter which I haven't tried
4 - yes all audio works.
5 - raw is different. It cannot use picture profiles. They don't give maximum dynamic range, raw does which is captured straight from the sensor. You need MLV App to process these files.

No. H.264 is bad with DR. Shooting RAW gives you best DR.
I'm thinking about getting either the M2 or the Canon 700d so I can install Magic Lantern. The Canon M is quite a bit more expensive and not as available in my country as the M2. Is the image quality of the M2 better than the Canon 700d? And which of these two cameras handles ML better? I like the M2 but I don't like it how it doesn't have a flippy screen unlike the 700d.

Is this information still current? Crop Mood supports the M2, so it would be interesting to know the differences in Crop Mood support between the M and M2.
Hi Zeek, you have great videos and they have no noise, are you using some kind of denoising software?
Is the ISO test without processing or was it also cleaning the image there? Because my M2, even with ISO 100, gives a lot of noise in the shadows.
I shoot 100 ISO always. For tough situations, I use a speedbooster and a fast lens e.g. f1.4.
I would love to use denoisers but they take so long to render unfortunately.

One question: is there a specific setting linked to the lens model?
To be more precise: I can't make it to work with a 7 Artisans 35mm. If I push the record button nothing happens. I have tried reinstalling the app with/without lens attached with no result.
The only lens that works is the 22mm f/2. From what I've noticed, if the app doesn't get the lens info, does not allow recording.

Yeah crazy stuff haha! I have lot's, the whole channel was built from this camera lol. I do like to review lenses as well as new cameras for test purposes. ;) The EOS M just has a distinct look to it with Magic Lantern RAW.

No actually video stuff isn't my profession, just a hobby.
I grew up watching lots and lots of movies, especially ones from the 60's-80/90's like Star Wars, Good Bad & Ugly, Goonies, Never Ending Story, etc...I always liked and enjoyed the Film Look. I personally feel that the EOS M gives me the closest image to that look depending on how you edit the raw clips, love it!
I do have Blackmagic, but I love the Canon EOS M Cameras a lot 👌 I'm no sound/visual engineer, I still have lots to learn, but I hope to always share the skills I learn in the videos to come.

Amazing channel and videos Zeek! I've recently started shooting 4k with my iphone 11 pro and seeing your videos has made me want to upgrade my filming setup. I just have a few questions that will help me decide which camera to ultimately get. Of the cameras/lens combos you have featured, which would you say has the best auto-focus? I'd like to start shooting house tours and neighborhood videos for real estate, and given that I'll have to stick to 20-30 min shooting windows, not having to worry about focusing will save time. Secondly, would i be able to edit the raw video files directly on my ipad pro (currently i'm editing my iphone 11 videos directly on ipad pro in lumafusion because my desktop is quited dated and would not be able to handle 4k editing)? Thirdly, would you mind sharing more about how you manage shooting with your extended battery. Do you have it attached to a rig along with your camera, or do you keep it in your pocket?

1. Unfortunately none will have the best AF for Video, at least not for continuous. If you're shooting windows, use wide lenses, stop down the aperture and shoot infinity focus on a gimbal which should get everything in focus just like a smartphone.
2. There is an app where you convert these raw video files known as .MLV. You need MLV App to transcode the files to .Mp4, Prores, DNG etc and then you can edit those files onto lumafusion or whatever, FCPX...I have a video about it here:

3. I have five batteries that i keep in a bag and take out three in my pocket. I can Shoot for about 2-3hours using only two batteries. You need to be smart about the way you do this e.g. turning off the camera when not shooting. Other methods involve getting a dummy battery and feeding it from the camera into the monitor.

I am testing out your July 2020 build and everything is working amazing, but I was wondering is there a setting i'm not seeing in magic lantern to enable image stabilization? Yes the M is better with ML.
Hey Zeek, I tried the 2.5K Raw mode on my EOS M. I noticed alot of Focus Pixels in post that I can't see when I'm shooting at 976p (1080p) at least not on my 700D. Do you have MAPP files for this? I haven't had the time to search around the Forums for this. Also I wanted to ask you if you can make an in depth video regarding external monitors? Would definitely appreciate your advice based on your experience. Maybe you have already but I couldn't find any 😁
I don't get much of the focus pixels with he 2.5k mode. Make sure in MLV App you have "fix focus pixels" enabled. You can enable 3x3 chroma smooth too. The mapp files can be downloaded here:

Once downloaded just drag them into the blank MLV App screen to load them. Restart.

No problem 👍 Just holds shutter at e.g. 1/50 in case you accidentally bump it or change it over by accident.
I’m hoping they’ve fixed some bugs. Last time I tried using magic lantern it would make my camera crash. So sad as it’s amazing. What are the main advantages of using magic lantern over the regular canon setup?
The regular quality is embarrassing lol. ML kills it. It's worth the effort. The more you shoot with it, the more you understand 😎👍

Does it also support clean hdmi out? I want to record using pc recorder with hdmi capture card.
You can get Clean HDMI Out by enabling "clear Overlays" which removes all the graphics from the Liveview.

Zeek.... HELP! I just got a brand new Canon EOS M2 from Japan, well it's never been used.... Anyways, before I got the camera I knew right off the bat I wanted to install magic lantern. However, I updated my firmware all the way to 1.0.4
And then I find out from your build that it has to be firmware 1.0.3 needless to say I was really disappointed in myself for updating my firmware.... I looked on the web to see what I can find and again, nothing. So I thought maybe I could go back to the earlier firmware... But, I seen a lot of comments that if you don't do it right you will brick your camera... Now I know these cameras have a lot of potential... But I really really want to install magic lantern... Do you have any suggestions? I would really appreciate anything you could help me with. Thank you in advance...

There both good for video, the EOS M has the upper hand though with more modes like 2.5K RAW, 5K RAW Timelapse, 3K RAW, 5K Anamorphic Mode etc...plus Custom Modes to set your own presets. I like the M2 though a YT Cam all rigged up. Pretty cool :)

No problem 👍
You just need to turn off raw video, restart, them turn of crop mode in the same tab, restart, then you can take photos. Otherwise, try taking photos in video mode, then repeatedly half-press the shutter to engage LV.

Hi Zeek, I've followed step by step your guide. Also, downloading from your link. But in ML option, I do not see CROP MODE and RAW VIDEO. The only available config is MOVIE CROP MODE. I got the EOS M2 with version 1.0.3. thanks

Yeah so, with a fresh card, copy the firmware on it then update firmware in camera, which will downgrade firmware.
Then follow the magic lantern setup process in the video 😎👍

Have you enabled AF on the lens first? Disable digital zoom in the canon menu. Enable servo zoom or one shot AF.

I was curious if you had a solution for me, but I've been using this build on my EOS M2, and whenever Magic Lantern is booted up, my HDMI only outputs black to the USB Camera Pro app. I didn't change anything from the downloaded version, and was curious is you knew whether this as an issue with the app or all field monitors, or if there's a setting I'm missing. Would love to know if M2 build simply can't output to a monitor before I invest haha. Thank you!
Hi Zeek! Ignore this comment of mine. Turns out its a problem with my capture card, I have to find a better one. It works fine with monitors and one of my big bulky powered capture cards.
Thank you so much for this video,. However, I found I'm not able to change ISO, it's always set as Auto, and shutter speed is stuck at 1/34, any idea how to resolve it?
Press the info button to get the dashboard, change the camera icon from auto exposure to Manual Exposure.
@@ZeekEOSZ Thank you!, this is resolved. I believe I have one last issue before use M2/ML with some confidence. I noticed my digital zoom is automatically enabled and cannot be disabled, so I cannot turn on face tracking. I suspect it is related with some item turned on or off in ML. I searched ML forum but could not pinpoint the issue. I wonder if you have any idea on this. Thanks again for your fantastic videos!
ML would probably cause the digital zoom to be automatically enabled, I have used continuous AF on the M2 with ML Before, not quite sure how to disable it as it appears after a restart having disabled it. I'll have a look into it in a few days.
This is the first time watching your video and I just subscribed. Great and helpful videos you put out there.
My Questions:
I wished u watched your video before choosing the EOS M2 over the M I thought higher is better.
#1 can I use the normal M2 (30 minutes) recording after installing ML?
#2 can ML Record any other video formats apart from Raw?
#3 can ML video mode record continuous? Up to 1 hour?
Ml raw is continuous with 1080 it can shoot beyond 30 minutes with the right setting. Mins better than M2 for Raw as it has more raw video modes apart from 1080.
Is there any chance that the m2 will be upgraded to be able to shoot at 2.5K in the future? If you know anything about this, please let me know.
The simple answer would most likely be to just get the EOS M, because a developer would have to work hard again coding for the M2 which is unfortunately not as similar as you would think to the M.
Hi Zeek! Cheers for the all the videos and the information. I just downloaded the ML build in your description (above) but when I try to install it I keep getting this message "ML directory not found! Please copy all ML files". I deleted the original download and downloaded again, but to no avail. I am running firmware ver: 1.0.3. I tried finding a EM2 download on the ML site but couldn't find it. Any advice? Sorry to hassle you with this.

Those specs will mostly likely be seen on the M50 with ML. Check eBay/Amazon or local sites including Facebook Market Place.
Do monitors now work with the m2 and raw video? I may have been trying on the older bills but that always seem to lock up my view.
Also, does autofocus work now with raw or does that still lock things up
Yeah, the M2 always works with monitors. I used to use this setup in the past and am considering doing it again. Just ensure Wifi is not enabled in the M2 otherwise this will disable the use of a Monitor.
AF works. Every time before recording just double tap the menu to refresh the register.

Hi Zeek, thx for your tutorial, I have problem with recording video, didn't touch any setting after ML installation, but after video is recorded when I try to play it's very slowed down like a slide show however sound is normal. The same result on PC after transfer. Could you please advise the reason. Thank you in advance!
It's jsut the buffereing from the App, you can minimize the window to make it run faster FPS.

Thank you, but it didn't help) the video is very laggy both when viewed from the camera and via MLVAPP. A video recorded without an ML is ok. I would show you how it looks like, but can't add a link to TH-cam. The easiest way to describe it is as a very low FPS. ML reinstalled twice. Can this be related to formatting the SD card on the PC and/or choosing the cluster size when formatting. Or any other ideas. Please help. Thank you.

I haven't experienced automatic stop. This may happen if you're shooting 14 Bit or 30FPS. So set Bit Depth to 10/12 in this case.
@@ZeekEOSZ thank you for feedback. I found many people who has same problem as me, and one solution I got is that, to reduce the size of per second. I tried and succeeded make it work with CBR 1.0, Aspect ratio 2.35:1, and 14 bit lossless.
@@ZeekEOSZ but one another problem I got is that, DNG files from MLV are broken. One guy had reached until this point recommended to use 14 bit instead, so I'll try tonight.
@@ZeekEOSZ my very first setting is the same as the video, and also tried with low CBR, and other bit depth, but they last 2-8 sec.
Since I solved this with change data size per second, I related with data recording speed. I'm using 32G 120mb/s SDisk Ultra, but I'll consider to change cards after watching your experimentation video of recording speed by different card.

SanDisk Extreme Pro are the way to go. 64GB and above, 95MB/s or 170MB/s. Just don't get a fake.

Unfortunately not. No developer has been working on the M2. Requires a different code to the M.
So does magic lantern disable the photo mode or can you still shoot photos?
You can still shoot photos, you just need to disable raw video and crop mode in the ML Menu.
Can you take an SD from the M1… and put it in the M2 to transfer 4k movies over the WiFi?

Delete MLV App, install it again and it will prompt you if you would like to install the focus pixel maps.

Peaking isn't good, better off using false sharpen on Live View I believe I showed in this vid. Works better.

It says in menu that "14 bit loseless" better used with iso 100, you noticed any difference between that and simple 14 bit, which doesnt have this warning?
No difference ;)
You want to be as close to iso 100 for sharper and cleaner shots. Zeek also mentioned that Max iso should be iso 800.

It is, but it's up to the developer to persue it. It's a lot of work. So far, I know they're working in the M50, 200D & EOS R. It's a big process though.

Pretty similar in aliasing - about the same, in the sample footage here I used a diffusion filter - Glimmer Glass 3 which helped reduce harsh edges caused from the super sharp Sigma 30mm.

Hi Zeke. I downloaded and installed files from your archive and ran into two problems. First, when recording a video, stripes and small ripples appear on the screen. The second problem is that when I press DOWN, the camera shows me the ISO setting, not the Magic Lantern menu. Double tapping the screen doesn't help. Can you suggest something?

don't worry about those stipes, they shouldn't appear in the footage. You need to hold down the down button to enter the ML Menu.
Unfortunately, these streaks are visible in video (including RAW). I hold down the button to enter the menu, but it also shows the ISO setting
Are you in auto mode? Press info to enter dashboard and enable M Mode. It's hard to see from my end what's really happening. Try the trash can button to enter ML Menu 👍

Go to normal Canon menu yellow wrench and select custom functions and then enable release without shutter. 👍

Click on the normal canon Menu and make sure you are in 1080p and not 720p option. Sandisk Extreme PRO is recommended.
So I'm running in to a bit of an issue, I followed all of the steps that you did to your M2, however I am running in to an error message about 2 or 3 seconds after trying to record video. It says "Movie recording stopped automagically" and then stops recording. It seems to only do this after I have it set to record in RAW. I have a Sandisk SD Card that is rated at 80MB/s so I'm a bit confused as to how this is happening.
Also, is there a possibility for magic lantern to uninstall itself? I had it installed on the camera about 4 months ago, but haven't powered on my camera until yesterday and noticed that the magic lantern firmware was missing.
Magic lantern is installed on the card and not the camera. The recommended SD card is SanDisk Extreme Pro 95mb/s or 170mb/s.

For video the original Eos m or 700d will be a better option with magic lantern Raw Video. For ogotos, the EOS M/M2 are the best, love them! With the Speedbooster they have closer to full frame look.

The M3 doesn't support ML RAW, I prefer to use RAW Video with these cameras, if you don't then the M3 might be a good choice.

Better in lowlight, slightly less chroma noise. Wifi for photo transfer to devices. Tiny bit lighter, that's about it. There was some discussion around the M50 a few weeks back, development may be happening, just not announced or perhaps shared in public as yet. 👍

This video is for the M2, for the M you need to upgrade to firmware 2.0.2, the M & M2 have different Firmwares. 👍

NO ML for M50. Only EOS M2 OR Original EOS M. Original is better
just installed ML to it - it works OK (sometimes crushing) with 18-55mm lens, but with 11-22mm it crashes on loading...it means, it doesn't work with 11-22 with ML installed
It should definitely work. I've used the 18-55mm & 22mm before on the M2, worked fine. Each time before you record, just tap the Menu button twice for it to restart registers fresh.
Another question. The choice of Prime lens for Low light video. I wanted to but Viltrox 23mm f1.4 EF-M for Canon but Aparture can only be used in Auto mode for Both EOS M AND M2.
I am also considering Sigma 30mm f1.4
The kit lens is poor for low light. There is a firmware update for the kit lens - don't think it will make any difference. My EOS M2 firmware is on 1.0.2.
What do you advice in terms of lens selection
