I love that the US Army did a dedication to a Canadian artist. No borders here. Neil was one of our greatest exports, and his lyrics touched so many world wide.
😢this band touched so many people and I don’t even think they realized it. Neil’s lyrics were so powerful. Simply the best band ever, I’m glad I was around when they were.❤
Thank you for reacting to such a beautiful song. Yes, it was a great song by RUSH, but the US Army Band brought a different, tender element to it. It gave me tears like yours, truly beautiful song for a beautiful soul, Neil Peart. RIP...
I knew you would love this cover. I find this version so poignant, so heartfelt, the stripped down music makes the lyrics stand out beautifully. I cry every time i hear it.
I’m a 60 year old Rush fan and “world’s okayest drummer” and I still get weepy every time I hear this. I remember when my wife told me of Neil’s passing and I sat bawling for hours. I’ve only cried for very few celebrity passings (Robin Williams, Charles Schulz, and Jim Henson), but this one cut deep. His music and writings got me through some of the worst moments of my life (surviving my teens, the deaths of my father and subsequent passing of my first wife) and later on the death of my brother. Ride on Ghost Rider. We are only immortal for a limited time. God bless and thanks so much for your music, and time among us
Thank you for making me cry first thing in the morning! This is a beautiful song lyrically and musically. It is wonderful to be able to share a feeling and an emotion with someone I have never met or spoken to. I guess social media platforms are not all bad or a waste of time. Thank you
I cried as much as you did, Red. It makes me feel a profound gratitude for Neil's insightful consideration as he masterfully utilized his intellect, his inspirations, and his emotional journeys, to put into words the human conditions in such a way that has imbued the hearts of millions of us. Thank you for you, Neil.❤😢
Thanks for making me cry, here. Watching you experience all of this magic, reminds me that it IS and will always be magic. Time may never stand still, but these moments give meaning to it all.

According to Peart, he wrote the lyrics for "Time Stand Still" based on his time with Rush: "All through the '70s our lives were flying by; we spent so much time on the road that it became like a dark tunnel. You start to think about the people you're neglecting, friends and family. So the song is about stopping to enjoy that; with a warning against too much looking back. Instead of getting nostalgic about the past, it's more a plea for the present."
Thanks for taking the time to react to my suggestion, @redheadedneighbor This really is a beautiful piece and a fitting tribute to Neil. These soldiers definitely deserve our thanks for their service. I shared your tears, Red, listening along, just as I do each time I hear this tribute. The arrangement, the emphasis on the lyrics, the lack of percussion to simulate a missing man formation... it's powerful and hits home, and you obviously appreciated that. Deep breath and chin up. You're doing great work here. ❤
When you hear covers like this and jacob moons famous subdivisions cover you realize how great they were as songwriters. When you strip away all their great musicianship there are just great songs here. Do jacob moons subdivisions cover on a Toronto rooftop!! The entire band saw it and loved it.
I turn my back to the wind To catch my breath, Before I start off again. Driven on Without a moment to spend To pass an evening With a drink and a friend I let my skin get too thin I’d like to pause, No matter what I pretend Like some pilgrim - Who learns to transcend - Learns to live As if each step was the end Time stand still - I’m not looking back - But I want to look around me now See more of the people And the places that surround me now Freeze this moment A little bit longer Make each sensation A little bit stronger Experience slips away… I turn my face to the sun Close my eyes, Let my defences down - All those wounds That I can’t get unwound I let my past go too fast No time to pause - If I could slow it all down Like some captain, Whose ship runs aground - I can wait until the tide Comes around Make each impression A little bit stronger Freeze this motion A little bit longer The innocence slips away… Summer’s going fast- Nights growing colder Children growing up - old friends growing older Experience slips away…
🤗Quite apart from everything else that's wonderful about it, what a fantastic version/cover of the song! I love the fact there were no drums too. Seemed right somehow.
For us in the RUSH community this is still a very hard video to watch. I remember where I was when I got the news from a dear RUSH friend that Neil had passed. It’s a moment I will never forget. I first started checking with my RUSH friends who were “in the know” to see if it was true. I broke down when it was confirmed. The day was January 10th, 2020. We would soon learn that he had actually passed 3 days earlier and the families of Neil, Ged & Al had kept it quiet for 3 days at the request of Neil’s wife. This is still very raw for us & just watching now with you, I broke down & I have seen this video countless times over the past 4 years. When Ged learned about this video he actually mentioned it on his Instagram account.
RedHeadedNeighbor, with all sincerity, humility, respect, honesty and diffidence to them, you can perhaps see why, and maybe even acquiesce to some's assertions, that Rush is simply the best band...ever. I have watched this innumerable times, and shed tears each and every single time, unabashedly. 😢 🌈
Since 2020, every January 7th at 7pm, a number of his fans salute him the same way author JRR Tolkien asked to be remembered: they pour a small glass of their preferred libation, raise it, and say simply, "The Professor", then drink.

Great reaction! This version/tribute was beautiful! Neil's passing was the first time I've ever cried at a celebrity's passing...Rush's music (& Neil's words) have filled my life since I was 12 (1990) - and it's been so poignant & meaningful. Being fellow Canadians (I live about 100km from Toronto), and knowing also the tragic events in Neil's life, I was broken to hear of his death. Certain songs would hit me hard (The Garden, Afterimage)...then this came out - and the flood came again! Amazing arrangement, voices - perfect tribute! And special thanks for your services US Army! RIP Professor!
You know what losing Neil taught me? That whatever you think about someone else's fandom, it matters to THEM. That grief in these situations is real, and to be kind. I was a mess for about three days, constantly having to find quiet places to have a little cry. Even Bowie didn't hit me as hard. I was, literally, inconsolable, I felt a part of me was gone. I had never experienced that level of emotion over someone I'd never met passing away. I have rolled my eyes at people's reaction to stars passing away. No more. I gained massive perspective. This person mattered to them in a way I never appreciated until Neil. Losing him broke me, and yet, ultimately remade me into what I hope is a slightly better person.
These guys did an amazing job with this song. Have it saved. Hits hard every time. These lyrics have always spoken to me especially doing what I did for most of my formative years in the Military. "more of the places and people that surround me now" such great words. great reaction.
My boy is in the service (Army) and I forgot all about this video. I shall be sending it to him. I cry out of pride for his decision, and I cry because I simply miss him.
What the Heck Red? Wasn't expecting to cry this morning. My salt must be high, it burns!! When did this come out. Gonna hit the regular version. Would like to see the Alex and Geddy reaction. WOW! Great arrangement and interpretation and well done! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
The very last thing you are, Red, is alone. We feel it. We feel it with you. I just finished "My Effin' Life" by Geddy and the chapter regarding the loss of Neil just reached in my chest and took my heart. I'm a poet and a former drummer,, and he was one of my dearest inspirations and influences. He was only a year older than me, and his loss just banged my heart into the wall of my mortality. A few more life events have kept me running into that same wall, and even though I'm still working full time, I'm writing more and more, He left us a rich legacy to admire and be inspired by it's brilliance. We feel it with you.
Oh man... i remember when this was released... whew... it will always be special... i love the song to begin with, but added so much with this tribute version... and what a history with this band...
Impossible not to shed a tear or two. Neil was truly a gift from the heavens so humble had incredible insight for the human condition and touched so many with his words and inspired many who became percussionists because of him .
If I remember correctly, the tenor singer was the one who wrote the arrangement and had it written and performed within only a few days of Neil's passing. He was, as you might guess, a huge Rush fan.
Thank you so much for sharing this!!! I have mentioned on other reactions how this song and Rush in general has always been a part of my friendship with 2 guys since grade school. I literally had to walk away while this played to compose myself. Will be sending this to the guys shortly. Be well Red...thank you!
Hey Neighbor... I never really got upset when people i dont know pass away. Neil's passing was really rough for me. He is my inspiration to play music. I saw this after he passed and had the same reaction you are now. Rush was more than just a rock band. They are very unique in the way they approach everything... RIP professor.
To be moved to tears by a piece of art speaks volumes about the creators. We cry because we're happy. We cry because we're sad. We cry because we've been moved so deeply by something so beautiful we can't help but laugh or cry. Emotions are a gift. Without them life would be colorless boring and bland.
We know what we are getting ourselves into when we watch reactions like this. We feel it too, but it's important keep Neil, the music, all of it, alive for as long as we can. Bless you 🥲 Long live Rush 🥰🤘
The entire world cried with you on that one😢😢😢. Another artist paid homage to Rush with a moving version of After image which was originally wrote in honour of a friend of the band who suddenly passed away. That song being dedicated to Neil hits home in a brutal way. Check out Mike Masse’s version of After image. Brilliant piano cover with a heartfelt vocal performance. You have to do it darling.❤❤❤❤
Such a great tribute and so well done. Considering this song was written so many years ago and how it may resonate even more now. Freeze this moment a little bit longer. As with so much of Rush's music and Neil's lyrics. Timeless. Great message and reaction.
I'm a person who appreciates music, the message in the lyrics, and of course the talent needed to create it. Therefore, It's not uncommon for a piece to touch my soul. Rush did that for me, and when I watch you respond to this song, the message within it and allow the emotions to rise up (even if you attempt to hold it back), I can see another who respects the process and the musicians. Thank you for doing this. Please, never apologize for allowing your soul to receive touching melodies. I tip my hat to you.
Yes ,, every time that I hear this song, it brings back so many memories.. life is so fragile. The day that I heard that Neil passed away I must of mourn for three days straight.. and still from this day , I miss the professor and all of his goodness that he gave to the World .
A beautiful tribute to a beautiful song. I cried the first time I watched them do it & again just now. I don't have sufficient words to outline what 50 years of Rush fandom means to me.
The depth and pure poetry of Neil's lyrics have touched us all and will continue to touch future generations of music fans. Rest in peace Professor. 🥁 🥁 🐐 🐐
Hey neighbor, thank you for such a beautiful and honest reaction to an amazing song. Some reactors apologize when they have an emotional reaction to a song. This was one of the first tribute videos I saw after Neil passed away. It’s an absolutely beautiful rendition of the song.
Cried the 1at time I saw this tribute...everytime since...RIP NP.
This was actually posted on the official Rush website. Alex and Geddy appreciated this so much.

I turn my back to the wind
To catch my breath,
Before I start off again.
Driven on
Without a moment to spend
To pass an evening
With a drink and a friend
I let my skin get too thin
I’d like to pause,
No matter what I pretend
Like some pilgrim -
Who learns to transcend -
Learns to live
As if each step was the end
Time stand still -
I’m not looking back -
But I want to look around me now
See more of the people
And the places that surround me now
Freeze this moment
A little bit longer
Make each sensation
A little bit stronger
Experience slips away…
I turn my face to the sun
Close my eyes,
Let my defences down -
All those wounds
That I can’t get unwound
I let my past go too fast
No time to pause -
If I could slow it all down
Like some captain,
Whose ship runs aground -
I can wait until the tide
Comes around
Make each impression
A little bit stronger
Freeze this motion
A little bit longer
The innocence slips away…
Summer’s going fast-
Nights growing colder
Children growing up -
old friends growing older
Experience slips away…
🤗Quite apart from everything else that's wonderful about it, what a fantastic version/cover of the song! I love the fact there were no drums too. Seemed right somehow.
Think of it as a missing man formation. The fallen who is being honored is left out of the formation, in this case the arrangement.
