In 1977 my 8th grade English class was studying science fiction. Our teacher asked us to bring in examples of science fiction and one of my classmates (I unfortunately can’t remember who) brought in an album by a group I had never heard of called Rush. My teacher played side one of 2112. My life changed forever. Thank you forgotten classmate.

Neighbor: 2112 is the story of the RUSH's early struggles with the music industry (the Priests) and how it wanted our 3 hero's to conform to their regulations, short hit single songs, etc. Thankfully RUSH went their own direction, amassed fans organically and never had to live by industry standards. In the end, Alex, Geddy and Neil triumphed in way that no other band the universe has ever seen or will ever see. The message: Be inspired and follow your dreams, no one else's. Thank you for reviewing another RUSH masterpiece - you are phenomenal!

I was a troubled young man. Without hope. When he commits suicide (or simply dies of a broken heart) and then the liberators arrive just moments later... it taught me to hold on, just hold on a little while longer, and perhaps, just maybe, salvation will come. I'm well over 50 now, have a great life, and I owe it in no small part to this album, played again, and again, and again. God bless Rush. ❤
The most amazing thing is they were in their 20s when they composed all this.
And, it had been Geddy, Alex and Neil for maybe 2 years, tops, at that point (though they had already released two albums together, at that point)
They were in their EARLY 20s. None of them was over 24 when they recorded this album!

This is my favorite musical adventure of all time. I'm an avid Science Fiction reader, and I used to go to sleep at night, in 1976, with this side of my vinyl album filling my headphones and blocking out the real world. A true masterpiece of musicianship and storytelling.
I have watched quite a few reactions to this epic work, and yours has been the best by far.
You took the time to not only appreciate the music and the musicians, but also took time to understand the story being told.
It just fills my heart with a gladness that someone else "Gets It". 🤘

You are such a perfect reactor when it comes to RUSH. You are RUSH ARMY! We all have had this great experience and identify with you. That’s what makes RUSH fans RUSH fans! Imagine a large building FULL of us on RUSH NIGHT! Indescribable concerts! RUSH was Special. RUSH NIGHT was different from any other concert. A whole different vibe. It was ELECTRIC! 😃😃😃
I always left the shows with a big, stupid permagrin on my face that lasted at least 24 hours. I was generally worthless the next day from partying so hard, my eyes still blazing red, my hands red and sore from banging them together, hungover, my voice trashed from yelling my face off, my ears still ringing, so I couldn’t hear properly and that big, stupid permagrin on my face. People that knew me finally figured out to not talk to me the next day. Did you go to the concert? WHAT?! I said did you go to the concert? WHAT?! They’d walk away shaking their head while I smiled. 😆

I did this on 18 different tours! I know, looking back, I can hardly believe I was so fortunate. I was in on it very early on.

Again, you have to keep in mind that they were 22/23 years old when they did this...just three guys with no auto-tune, and no back up musicians. At the start of Discovery, that was Alex tuning his guitar, and the producers recommended leaving the process in the recording to add effect. Now that you've experienced that, when you have a chance, you should listen to the live version recorded in June of 1997, at the Molson Amphitheater in Toronto! Again, just 3 guys performing it live with no auto-tune, or back up musicians. This album really put them on the map, and showed the public what they could really do! A lot of people say that listening to this album was a life changing experience. Glad you enjoyed it, since I had the same reaction when I was in my early teens and they released the album. I never really listened to music the same way again, after hearing it...

Prior to this album the guys were burnt out and their prior album not doing so well. The record company told them to be more commercial and no more long epic songs. They were living at their homes on their parents couches. Rush decided to give one more try with this whole side of the album. The record company was displeased but the album took off like gang busters. After 2112 Rush put out their own stuff without any interference from the record company. They are truly gifted. Thx for playing this!

I can't remember watching 2001 in that year, but I probably did.
I remember, this was a birthday gift from my dad. I immediately laid in bed, put on the headphones, grabbed the lyrics and read along.
I made my father listed and read as well afterwards.
When finished, he said it was about people born under Communism, tasting our freedoms and yearning for them.
We talked for a long time afterwards.
That's when I decided I would enlist in the USAF, which I did a number of years later.

Most of rush albums especially 2112 are made to listen to with headphones im glad you had them on
Nah, in the '70s we were mostly listening to music with other people, whether live or on a home or car stereo. Headphones were mostly for occasional listening without bothering others (and they weren't of the same quality as now). It wasn't until Walkmans became popular that people got locked into their own little musical worlds, cut off from other people and the communal experience that music is supposed to be.
A great stereo with good speakers and separation is better than headphones, imo. You still get the panning effects and are wrapped in the music, but without the unnatural effect of hearing certain sounds only in one ear or the other. You hear all the sounds in both ears, as we naturally hear, but they will be coming from different directions. And you also get the physical effects of the sound waves going through your whole body as well.
Plus, for some of us even the most comfortable headphones (or ear buds) are annoyingly uncomfortable.

I was just 16 the first time I listened to 2112.... My very first Rush song.... Saw them live first in 1978 at the Forum in LA where I also saw them take their final bow August 1st 2015, and I had the pleasure of meeting Alex waiting by his limo until 3:30am. I told him that I was 53 and this was my 53rd Rush show, and he told me that I was exactly the kind of fan Neil agreed to do a final tour for.... I feel blessed to have been able to have heard this at such a young age and I am 62 now and the only bigger influence in my life other than Rush would be the WORD OF GOD.... Praise Jesus.... Hallelujah

I was almost a decade after you (at the age of 13) when I first discovered Rush in 1983, thanks to my cousin. They immediately became my favorite band of all time. I attended every concert in Michigan, from the 1984 Grace Under Pressure tour, through their final show and tour in Detroit Michigan. I was fortunate to see them twice on that final tour. First in Virginia, then finally in Detroit. It was always my dream to meet the band in person, but was never able. A childhood friend of mine had an uncle who toured with Rush for many years. He was the lighting manager who later became their production manager (for live shows). My friend was fortunate to meet the band a few times, overr the years. Thanks to him, I was able to "attain" a signed grace under Pressure "cassette" sleeve, by all 3 members. I miss the greatest band ever.
Seeing this song in concert was unworldly!
We had no video or TH-cam or Spotify. We had no internet. We had vinyl. We had vinyl. This did NOT get radio play. This was walking down the hall hearing this and stopping and asking WTF IS THAT?!???!???! This is your musician hero in the band room after school with a boom box. No one was told to buy this. No one heard it on the radio. We heard it from a friend or acquaintance by accident. If there was any different guitar, vocal, bass or drums on Presentation it would not have sold millions. The genius was so powerful we couldn't resist. It is the greatest rock orchestration in all of rock n roll. To this day it is even Neil's most genius work
And Finale is a masterpiece of Neil's orchestration. What he adds to the musical line is just genius. Just genius.
Alex Solo's and acoustic playing are so emotive. Just Brilliant. Geddy vocal and bass - excellent. Drums - par excellence as usual. Production - very good.
For context, after their previous album Caress of Steel where they started to experiment with longer, complex songs (check out The Fountain of Lamneth, which was the whole of side 2), the record company were horrified and told them to stick to shorter more radio friendly songs… so they made 2112! To see just how much of a gamble it was you need to see the documentary Beyond the Lighted Stage. It really was a hail Mary, shit or bust moment for the band.
And really not even a Hail Mary.... it was more of a finger at the suits telling them we don't give a shit... this is what we're doing and if we're going out, we're going out our way. I love this band and everything they've ever stood for!

Yes it was. It was exactly that. We found that guitar in the cave. We had no animations to go with it, just the album. But before that even, we heard it walking down the dorm hallway, or in the band room or riding in someone's car. We heard it raw without visuals and we said "WHAT WAS THAT?!??!??!??!!!!!!" and we had to have more so we went to our local record store and bought the album the next day. Then we listened to it over and over a hundred times. We heard every bass line and Neil's genius drum orchestration and the beauty of Alex's symphony on a single guitar. We painted our own picture of the story from what we heard and what we read on the album jacket.
By the end of the week I bought the other 3 albums. Caress of steel became my 2nd favorite, falling to 3rd after Permanent Waves.
The song and record that bought the band their freedom. After the underwhelming response to their third album Caress Of Steel which featured a 20 minute song (The Fountain of Lamneth) taking up the entire B-side of the album the record company threatened to drop them if they didn't start making shorter more radio friendly songs. Rush responded with 2112 another album that featured a 20 minute song taking up the entire A-side of the album. The record company was aghast but the fans loved it and through word of mouth it became their best selling album up to that time and from then on nobody ever tried telling Rush what they could or couldn't do. If you enjoyed this try The Fountain Of Lamneth next or their other side long epic Cygnus XI book ll Hemispheres.

This was a last gasp statement against the end of their careers, which was their previous tour they called The Down The Tubes tour due to the lack of sales and concert revenue. They had one last album to prove their worth and they assumed control of their careers against pressure to make hits with THIS. They never accepted anyone's input ever again.

I love when people discover Rush. This was the album that started it all for me. Back in 78 when I was in high school. My buddy let me borrow the 2112 album. At the time I was a huge Kiss fan. I remember strapping on the headphones and letting the needle fall. I was just blown away and immediately became a fan and they took over my favorite band spot. Since then I've seen Rush 23 time and 15 different tours. I became a bass player because of Geddy and I even named my cat after him and meet him when he did his book signing. When they announced their retirement I was heartbroken so I decided to drive from my house in Connecticut to Montreal by myself to see thier final tour. I still get choked up watching Neil drum, miss him so much. I can see the same passion when she watches them. Long live the greatest band ever!
i was in 7th grade. a friend gave me a cassette tape with 2112 on one side and signals on the other. Subdivisions hit me hard. it said all the things i was feeling in junior high. i finished listening to signals and though, "wow that was a nice chill out album." Then i flipped the tape and heard 2112. My mind was blown!
Good job. So happy to see another generation discover and enjoy the music and culture of my gen.
For a casual Rush fan, after hearing this, they would of had to of come away greatly impressed. For 3 guys to create so much sound and for Geddy to showcase so mush vocal range is truly mind boggling. This is why the 70’s was such a great decade for music. Bands could create their own unique sound and experiment from album to album and the creativity was endless. Now you get one shot to create a hit or else you fall by the wayside. It is really sad what the music industry has become!
I can remember sitting on my bean bag chair in my room with the album cover in my hand and headphones on as i was 16 and still living at home. It was epic, it was a RUSH! Thanks Red! Cheers.

The very first time I heard this was LIVE in 1976 - I had never heard Rush, but I lived in a small city and went to pretty much every concert that came to town. 14 years old, in a small crowded arena, full of various kinds of smoke - slight contact high going on. And THIS starts! Changed my understanding of what music could be right then and there!

Well, Red, you had this 57-year-old crying with joy while watching *your* joy and excitement as you listened and watched this amazing piece. There were so many great parts of your reaction: seeing the Priests for what they were, seeing the guitar for the first time, being pissed at the Priest’s disavowal of the guitar…and your happiness at each amazing musical section.

It's great how well they convey emotion with their instruments. When he finds the guitar the music is very joyous and happy, then when he is rejected by the priests the music conveys anger and frustration. After the dream the music is lamenting and beseeching. Such great storytelling.
This album cemented Alex's credentials as a brilliant guitarist for me, even if the mainstream didn't catch it at the time. Rush and their record company had a brittle relationship at this point. The suits said get more mainstream or else, Rush said f* it and recorded 2112. The rest, as they say, is underappreciated and often underrated History.
Alex is criminally underrated! But when you have Ged and Neil in your band, it's hard to stand out. No other guitar player could fill that spot in Rush tho. No one.
@@JK-so9keNatalie is his playing underrated but what he brings to the table as an artist the note she picked and how he fills each and every song to me is just absolutely brilliant. I mean they're all just brilliant but Alex I really feel is Just A Step Above... he is just a phenomenal composer. His Parts truly make Rush what it is. I mean don't get me wrong they're all just insanely great but Alex is just on Earthly when I really listen to how he wrote his parts. Like I said, what he brought to the table really made Rush what it is.

My first concert, Rush All the Worlds a Stage” tour. Geddy informed the crowd that they were going to play side one of their latest album….2112. My musical life changed.
It's based on an Ayn Rand short story, 'Anthem', which is worth reading.
They were like 24 yrs old when this came out. Crazy.

See how it sings like a sad heart and joyously screams out its pain. Perfect description of what blues and rock and roll are about.
The first part, Overture, is a true symphonic overture. The overture was typically the opening movement in an opera or orchestral suite. It was a medley that would introduce the audience to the primary musical motifs that would come in later movements. When you go back and listen to it again, it’s fun to try and figure out which later part is being played during the opening.
P.S. - that little guitar lick at the end of Overture is from Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. 2112… 1812… See what they did there? ;) Cheers!

First heard this over 40 years ago when I was 9 years old , ya hoo , when this starts playing , it does not get shut off , it has to play the whole way through ! Yes , RUSH is unique , they definitely know how to play !
I remember buying this LP... bringing it home, gingerly removing the plastic wrap and placing it on my turn table. I plugged in my headphones and turned off all the lights in my room... Rush took me on a journey I had never experienced. Thank you Neil, Geddy and Alex for everything you've shared with us over the years. My life has been all the better because of you. Rest in peace Neil, your legacy lives on and you are sorely missed every day.

They were like 22 yo when they wrote this, giving their best middle finger to the record industry. After this no one could tell them what to do. They got no radio play. The albums started peeling off the shelf because we heard this in a dorm room or in a band room or at the beach or in a friend's car. We bought this like potato chips. We had never heard anything like this and we LOVED it. This was Yes on a hard rock level. This was everything we ever wanted to hear in music. We ate this up. We didn't have TH-cam or Spotify. In my car I have Temples triple tracked so when I flash by with my v8 floored windows shatter for a mile around

No single piece of music has had a greater impact on my life than this. Discovering this in 1976 when I was only 13 set me on a course that I have never regretted.
To this day I could tell you exactly where I was sitting on this planet when I first heard this.

The only weird part about the animated version is, it differs from the original ending. In the original ending, our main character ended his own life. In the animated version he doesn't. (The song remains the same, but the animation suggests that he witnesses the return) Maybe it's morbid but, I find the song more impactful believing that they ended their life.
After that solo in Sililoquy (Which is one of the more emotional solos I've heard from Alex in my opinion.) "My lifeblood spills over" It all ended there for him and he never got to see the return of the Elder race of man. Which, does make this more sad. But, not everything in life has happy endings.
This is an absolute masterpiece of musicianship and if one can take the time to listen and enjoy, it doesn't disappoint. I've showed this song to some friends who were like "Man that's too long what the hell is going on?" Not everyone's cup of tea. I respect that. Take care!
EPIC AWESOMENESS!! You can't really compare listening to the singing of words to reading a book. Your imagination is probably more free reading a book versus having the distraction of awesome Rad instrumentalisation!!! I'm not sure I've come across your channel before but for some reason this popped up in my feed and hearing Rush 2112 which was the first Rush that I ever heard any part of an album from, not just a few of the hits were on the radio by then. I was spending the evening over at a friend's house and he was a guitar player like me, I guess this was probably 9th grade, and he put this on actually he held up 2112 and hemispheres, and the cover of hemispheres almost look more interesting, but he nudged me in the direction of 2112 and he put it on and my life was changed forever. I figured out how to play a lot of this but I wouldn't even want to try to exactly replicate the guitar solos because they are so unique to Alex's license. Just a great blend of really hard rock but really creative melodic expressive sound, that does often remind me of a voice as you say.
Please do not sleep on side B of the record. This occupied all of side a but side B is about five Standalone songs, but because this was where the band was at and this was what they were doing alright then they all kind of sound connected to me. But really they're all over the map. Each one is a gym in its own way. And I love all of them, but I have to say, they close out 2112 with an absolute banger. The last song on side B is Something For Nothing. I can hear that at top volume over and over and over forever and never get tired of it!

Overture & Temples of Syrinx take me back to the early 80s when I used to go to Radio Caroline Rock Roadshows in the UK. Everyone would air-drum to Overture, then headbang to Temples. Such good times!

Many years ago I saw Rush live. They played this entire song. They did not normally play the entire song only parts. The crowd was joyous to be there for that magical moment.
Geddy himself decided 2112 needed the animation....the words are there and I think it's fascinating how he came up with the comic like atmosphere just brilliant

I have been a rush fan from the first album to the last album and it gives me great pleasure to see you experience what I did so many years ago. I went to see them any time they came anywhere near me in ohio. I miss that time but l will always have the memories.

It wasn't until recently when I started revisiting the music of my younger years that I listened to 2112 and was completely blown away by the A-side epic. These three lads left us such an extraordinary legacy of music.
I have to say this was a great video. I've been waiting for you to do this one for a while, thank you you nailed it. I've been a fan since I was 13 and a friend played this song for me in 83. The second time through that day we read along to the lyrics. And i always considered the main character died I the end, I mean "My life blood spills over" is a pretty good description of death. It had that macabre type ending that great writers strive for. The Grand Finale we all had our own interpretation but most figured the elders came back and kicked ass. Am I wrong thinking that Star Man ended his own life rather than live in a society as wrenched as his. Also the Romeo and Juliette type tragedy where if he only waited salvationwas around the corner. Or was it his self sacrifice that brought back the elders. It was a great time, a bunch of teenagers phlososizing about a rock band. Good times. Good times.

This whole album really showed Geddy's range in his voice. From the soft gentle singing (Discovery) straight to the hard belting out vocals (Priests). so very talented. All 3. Alex's playing is always so phenomenal. Neil's drumming always on point. great reaction. Wait till you see the Live in Rio version of 2112/Temple of Syrinx. Crowd chanting...amazing. keep up the great work.
This takes me back to my teens staying up late with this album on my parents state of the art stereo with my headphones cranked to 11

I discovered this album for nearly 40 years ago, and still learn so many details. Just recently, for example, someone pointed out to me that:
"Attention all planets of the solar federation" is a seven word phrase repeated three times (7*3 = 21)
"We have assumed control" is a four word phrase repeated three times (4*3=12)
I heard this album played on the radio while I was driving out to my brother's house with my mom one day 40-some years ago. Before that I only really knew songs from the first album and Fly By Night. Hearing that overture and Temples of Syrinx was memorable! And I can still remember hearing the beginning of that next song where he's tuning the guitar. I had seen them play at The Michigan Palace in downtown Detroit in Dec 74 when I was 14. They opened for Kiss, we were just there to see Rush. What a show! But they only played for maybe 45 minutes. We rushed the stage towards the end of their show. Fly By Night was released not too long after that.

The producer for every Rush album between 1975's Fly by Night and 1982's Signals was Terry Brown, whose first professional gig as an engineer was on a Jimi Hendrix Experience LP.
I bought the vinyl of 2112 when I was in high school and completely fell in love with it. It blew my mind and I couldn't get enough of Rush after that! 😁❤️🤘
Believe i was 12 when this came out and being the 4th of 6 kids i was exposed to so much great music in the 70's. As i look back over my early years i now realize through young reactors like yourself just how lucky i was to be exposed to what I consider the greatest generation of musical talent! Cheers
This was my first Rush album, thanks to my sister. Previously at the age of 12 all I'd really listened to was classical and jazz cuz my parents didn't listen to any rock or pop at all. This blew my mind... so orchestrated with classical arrangements and jazz weirdness... I loved them immediately. Now 47 years later and dozens of their concerts later, they are still a daily listen.
