Anyone who thinks Rush isn't known for their lyrics is just not intelligent enough to understand them. The kind of people who need simple and overly wrought rhyming pop songs. Rush pulls from Shakespeare, Rand, deep meaningful places we all share in our hearts. And this one is incredible.
Anyone who says they're not known for their lyrics doesn't know RUSH. Rush is arguably the best Rock band, ever. All 3 are Virtuoso musicians with unlimited synergy, flawless time changes, and seamless transitions. The lyrics are always intriguing and thought provoking. Ive seen them 17 times in my life. Love them !
The girl singing "Time Stand Still" is Aimee Mann. She was the lead singer of a band called 'Til Tuesday which had a hit song Voices Carry. She is the only outside person to ever sing on a studio Rush song.
Summer's going fast, nights growing colder Children growing up, old friends growing older Freeze this moment a little bit longer Make each sensation a little bit stronger Experience slips away Experience slips away The innocence slips away... Time Stand Still.
Not known for their lyrics? Who the hell could make such a claim? Neil was one of the most intellectual well read musicians in history and his lyrics are both deep and profound.
I'm a 63 year old man, A fan since 1976. And Yes, They have made me cry a few times. Especially when I saw them in concert... Shivers. My wife, of course, thinks I'm foolish!😁
Whoever said that Rush isn't known for their lyrics don't know Rush! P.S. The lady singing the line "Time stands still" is Amie Mann of the band 'Til Tuesday. They hit it big with "Voices Carry" It's very much worth a listen..
Just to be fair to Aimee Mann, she had a more successful career as a solo artist than she did for the few years she fronted Til Tuesday. Her music inspired PT Anderson to write his classic, Oscar-nominated film, Magnolia. It was also her original music that drove the soundtrack album, which was certified gold in the USA in 1999.
I'm 35. Just lost the love of my life at 33 years old to heart failure. I'd give anything for time to stand still when I was in the hospital with her during her final days. She was so brave... I miss her so much. Rush was our favorite band, and their music means SO much more than it did a couple months ago now, and that's saying a lot, because it meant everything to me even before losing her... I didn't think their music could get more important, but there they go, amazing me once again, even though they've been retired for almost 9 years now. Has it really been that long?? Please... make time stand still.
Hi, read an army guy saying, things like this have to be approved in the high rankings, imagine neil getting the "ok" by the top brass of the most strongest army in the world .
The Hold Your Fire album was a tough nut to crack for me, coming off the masterpiece of Power Windows. It's the closest they ever got to "adult contemporary," and the lyrical themes are more mature, pragmatic and even introspective, and less philosophical and cerebral. Even almost 40 years later, I still have problems with it, although I've come to appreciate it-- it has some pretty remarkable music. Just from what I've seen from you so far in your Rush reactions, I would guess that it would be one of your favorite Rush albums by far.
Not known for lyrics?? Neil was definitely a poet and prolific writer and published author! Holy crap, how could anyone say they aren't known for their lyrics?? Listen to The Pass if you want more "bad lyrics" out of these guys 😂 Don't think there's any preparing for that song anyone can do before they hear it for the first time.
Rush is some off the finest and profound lyrics in all of Rock & Roll… The drummer Neil Peart (R.I.P.) is the primary lyricist. Also this song is written into my will to be played at my funeral
Hold Your Fire, the studio album this track is from, came out when i was in college and spent some serious time in my cars cassette deck and in my ears in headphones, so much great music and nostalgia. And yeah, whatever website said they weren't known for their lyrics obviously didn't know what the hell they were talking about, hehe. Neils lyrics, writing and poetry are one of the big draws for sure, oh and he's the GOAT drummer in many peoples eyes, not to mention just an overall brillant band musically. I had the pleasure of seeing them live over 10 times, RIP Professor.
Red, Welcome to RUSH ARMY!!!! This song made me cry because it was the last concert of my Idol Neil Peart. I met the band members years ago at a coffee shop in Toronto and to meet all of them was a thrill, I told Neil that he was my drum idol along with Buddy Rich who I also met in person. What thrilled me the most about this concert was them recognizing me up front in the crowd and Neil giving me a pair of his sticks and who would have thought that was going to be the last time I ever saw him again, RIP NEIL PEART!!! Our Clockwork Angel
Wherever you heard that or saw that erase it from your mind lol that's exactly how for decades they were degraded in the mainstream press....RUSH above ALL is known for their amazing lyrics, musicianship and for being just really great guys❤🇨🇦
IT IS LOVE! You experienced selfless LOVE in the lyrics! The words speak to what it is to place others before self. The words here speak to one thing... SELFLESSNESS! When you embrace selflessness... you experince what it means to love someone else! ACTA NON VERBA, deeds not words express this without exception! Time Stand Still speaks to being selflessness; this is why I am a life long RUSH fan! Seing your reaction... simply validates that!
Amiee Mann (of 'Til Tuesday) was the female backup lyrics for the song.... FYI the right side of the brain is what is the emotional center of the brain; this is what music /song taps into when you feel an emtional in resonse to music. (sorry, nerd side of my brain coming out!) Check out Spirit of Radio next from Rush.
Red you are right time does stand still 3 years ago my heart stopped for 16 min I saw no light guess I know where I am going LOL KIDDING🤣🤣We don't know if there will be a tomorrow and is why I promised myself to tell those I care for every day what they mean to me 💗💗💗💗#adamchance #songforhome #homefreeguys #reaction #redheadedneighbor #bestreactor #redsarmy #beautifulcountrygirl PS I AM A REDHEAD FAN JUST SAYIN 💯💯💯
One thing I love about RUSH is that all three of them are equal partners. There is no "leader" in the typical sense. They are a team.. and certainly one of the most impressive rock bands ever. Any list of the "Greats" has to include them. (Your channel is looking great, btw!)
I've been a RUSH fan since I was a kid in the early 80s now I'm 53 and I have followed them through the high times and the lows, and so when I hear Time Stand Still on the radio now, I can't help but tear up thinking back on how every song and every album was truly the soundtrack of my life.
Are you kidding? Some of most awesome lyrics in rock. They might go over some people's heads. Meaningful, relevant always deep. Plus the amazing quality of the instrumentals. Immortal.
You loved this one for a reason, You'll absolutely love The garden From the Clockwork angels tour... last song from the last album... the perfect farewell song
Being Canadian I've been a Rush fan forever I've seen them 5 times and they are insane live. Each of them are masters of their instruments they are musicians musicians. Their fans know that their lyrics are exceptional and scoff at those comments about not being known for their lyrics is ridiculous. Thanks Red I love that you are a fan too.
Some fans dislike Rush's 80's keyboard era, but as a child of the 80s' I love it! This song has a beautiful melody, while the music is still complex, as one expects with Rush. Aimee Mann of 'Til Tuesday does a wonderful job with the guest vocal here, and the lyrics speak to a universal theme that anyone can relate to, especially as we get older. On this live recording, Geddy struggles some with the high notes. I recommend watching the super-cheesy music video to this on your own time (though maybe not if you get seasick easily LOL!). Personally, I feel that Geddy's melodic '80s vocals are his best, and you can really hear how well he had developed his voice by the mid-80s. A future reaction I suggest is the instrumental "La Villa Strangiato', Live in Cleveland.
I love this song. It's definitely a song that just hits first time, it doesn't need multiple listens to warm to it. I'm miles from hearing everything they've done but I think this and Closer To The Heart are my two favourites of the songs I know. I think you'll like that one too, there's an extended live video on here it's Rush - Closer To The Heart (A Show of Hands 1989) as it's a fairly short song you get an extra minute in that video! Great lyrics in this one. I love this line in it, very clever, All those wounds that I can’t get unwound.
Oh....and if you think you were tearing-up over that, wait until you listen to "The Garden" on the Clockwork Angels Tour live. I have to have tissues handy every time I listen.....it was Neil's way of saying "Goodbye" to all the Rush fans.....
RUSH is absolutely one of those bands that you need the Lyrics in front of you when you are getting to know the songs! Us RUSH ARMY would say it’s critical! Neil is outstanding at lyrical imagery and message. He even wrote several books over the years. RUSH is cerebral along with everything else. That’s just one more reason they have such a diehard fan base, including myself. Said it before and I’ll say it again, RUSH is Special. They really are.
My favourite album. And one of my favourites from it. The first time I listened to it after Neil died I cried the whole time. Then watching this performance and singing it to my newborn son as he slept on my shoulder made me cry even harder. Rush and their lyrics will always mean so much to me, and I can only hope my boys can learn and appreciate these masterpieces as much as I have.
The late Neil Peart was the Keats of rock music lyrics. One of the worlds greatest drummers who managed to transcend his personal life into the songs that shaped the minds of thousands of fans. Somewhere in the great beyond, Neil is kicking back with Vincent van Gogh dreaming of sunflowers and motorcycles.
The one thing that I loved to see at the dozens of Rush concerts that I experienced was the range of ages of the people around me; from 16 to 60, everyone singing, everyone rocking!
Rush were known for their lyrics. Neil Peart was a very a fabulous lyrist. Gorgeous song. Please react to Working them Angels from the Time Machine Tour live in Cleveland to see Alex playing a different instrument. Digital Man from the Snakes and Arrows tour is another banger! I love your necklace. Cheers
Hi Redhead etc etc,,So Glad that You found this song and are playing it,,,THIS IS AN ALL TIME SONG !!! HISTORY BEING MADE !!! HOPE IT'S PLAYED LONG AFTER I DIE !!! and I'm 75 !!!!
Hey redheadedneighbor, great reaction! A lot of us also get emotional when listening to Rush's music, especially those old enough to really have grown up with it (70-80s). In spite of their great technical abilities, they were also extremely lyrical, and that's where emotions reside: in the tension between these formal and stylistic aspects. They are sorely missed. Rush forever!
The female vocal was Aimee Mann from "Voices Carry" This is one of my favorite songs from Rush. If you want a cathartic cry listen to a live version of "The Garden"
I saw them first time in Germany 1982 ish. Signals tour. Went to 3 concerts after, they're my favorite band. Its nice seeing other people react like this. Cheers.
I simply adore your reactions… most others granted they greatly appreciate their greatness however too analytical versus the OMG! that you emotionally put into your reactions. Love it!
I freely admit, when Hold Your Fire was released, 18 year old me didn't get this song. I just couldn't relate to the message at all. Now, it hits WAY different to 55 year old me. When you get a chance, check out the Army Band's version recorded when Neil passed, it's fantastic: th-cam.com/video/aAPSK_cV5n0/w-d-xo.html
Some other good lyrics are in Marathon (life is about endurance, to experience as much as you can in life) and Enemy Within (conquering fear to pursue your dreams). Of course, Neil writes this far more poetically than I could.
I absolutely love watching your reaction, and seeing people find this band! This is one of my favorites...I found Rush when Moving Pictures came out. Got to see them back then for the first time with 2 of by best friends. Fast forward a few years and got to see their last 2 tours with those same guys. Time Stand Still....
The Time Machine tour was brilliant; they basically went through their discography in reverse, gradually reducing the amount and type of props on stage with them until their earliest songs later in the set had only the three of them and their instruments up there, just like when they started out. Beautiful.
I really like the way you describe your ongoing journey with the band. You have a way of simply breaking down the experience that can be hard to put into words sometimes. I really love your sincerity, I’m big on sincerity, so Thank You for sharing your RUSH joy. We totally get it! You’re in for a very fun ride. They have a nice big catalog of great music! You now are my Go To RUSH reactor! I wonder why? 🤔 Ha Ha! All kidding aside, it’s about the RUSH experience we all know so well and like seeing others being blown away by them. They are very, very good at that. 😁👍
Don't know about anyone else but RUSH lyrics always make me more all aware philosophically, Zen and in tune with the universe and coming feeling smarter than before
If anyone deserves a University course on their lyrical content, it's The Professor. IMHO, he is one of the greatest story tellers/philosophers of the 20th century. He made you think, reflect, question everything about yourself and the world around you. A true genius at his craft. Thanks for doing this. If you ever want the tears to flow uncontrollably, listen to the US Army version (not a type-o) of this song. I still have a hard time getting through it.
My son is the Army vocalist wearing the glasses in the Neil Peart tribute by the Army Band. So proud of him and his fellow Army musicians. The missing drummer was the best way to pay homage to the Professor.
Yep you said it! In an interview Geddy mentioned that it was about, getting older and wanting to feel things deeper and harder than ever, even at an older age...there's just no way someone young could have done this song....
You can safely ignore anyone that says Rush isn't known for their lyrics 😂 That being said, one of the best live rock performances of all times is them playing YYZ live in Rio, which is an instrumental. That didn't stop the massive audience from singing along though 😄 As always, thanks for sharing your journey with us!
Those who say Rush is not known for the lyrics probably mean the the band draws people for their music but the lyrics are what puts this ahead of all others by a country mile. Neil is known as one of the best rock lyricist in history. A brilliant writer that puts as much effort in his word choice as his drum drum work. One of our generation’s greatest poet. Check out Natural science ( Studio version ) and be ready for human history 101. Brilliant ❤❤
If you watch the Time Stand Still documentary, which is basically the story of Rush's last tour and the fans who attended it, you will see that the lyrics are absolutely a huge factor in what has brought people to Rush, and what has kept them there. Several people say that Neil's lyrics carried them through a tough time in their life. Others say that the lyrics are what formed a connection with the band and their music. So for anyone who thinks Rush didn't have much for lyrics they are missing something massive about this band.
Anyone who says Rush aren't known for their lyrics should pay much closer attention to such songs as "Roll The Bones", "The Pass", and "Nobody's Hero", to name just three of an immense catalog.
Usually if you see Neil smile, he knows that the three of them, as a unison orchestra are hitting the music right on. In that moment he new that they are playing well. I have to tell you a story about drummers and smiling. One time I remember when I was 17 and I was playing the drums for my girlfriend. I remember feeling good inside because I was hitting everything right. When it was all over she told me that it looked like I was mad at the symbol. Not that I had played well. (which was what I expected.) It takes such concentration to move all of your limbs at different times and different beats. So there is little room for smiling I guess. Neil doesn't 'not' smile because he's not happy about his playing, he's just concentrating so hard so that yall can hear the music and his exceptional drum playing where he takes you to another world. I know he smiled at Getty because they knew they were killing it.
RUSH lyrics are top 10 in music, not just rock. You just need a brain, a heart and some wrinkles to appreciate their words. The female was Amiee Mann of Til Tuesday (of Voices Carry fame). She was also in The Big Lebowski.
59 years old, and this song still makes me feel the same way it did you, ever since I first heard it on the day the album 'Hold Your Fire' was released. I played the crap out of this entire album for years. It's gotten to a point where I don't listen to them as much as I did in my youth becaue it's always so emotional for me. SO. MANY. SONGS. that still bring a tear to my eye across their entire library. It's so beautiful how you 'get it' with these guys. It's rare that people really get it, even more so when it's a woman. It was their lyrics that originally drew me in when 'Closer To The Heart' was playing on radio when I was in high school and when I started buying more of their music, I realized just how deeply I felt connected to them. Everything they did on the 80s and 90s felt like they were speaking directly to me. While you've reviewed a lot more Rush than anyone I've found in the interwebs, here are a few that I think you should review soon. Those first 3 bring tears to my eyes, to the point of sobbing a few times over the years from the vivid imagery in the lyrics, and of course, the music is undeniably the best ever. The Manhattan Project Red Sector A The Mission Anthem
Great reaction I didn't get rush at first in the seventies, when I heard their farewell to kings lp .But unseen events that lead to drinking special mushroom tea and decided to try and listen to that rush band I don't care for much, right after hearing Xanadu end, I got it, I got them, Ive been a rush fan ever since lol , that happened to me as a teenager this many years later its nice to see new people smile because rush they aim to please, and when u get them your blessed for a lifetime thank God for Rush
Rush is absolutely known for their lyrics. Their music was often referred to as “thinking man’s rock.”
Exactly. But to be correct, it's the thinking "person's" music.
I 'think' you might be right!!

59 here and they still make me cry. My wife thinks I'm a dork too.
The older we get the faster time goes, I was front row on this tour, I wanted the night to go on forever.
Neil is one of the lyricists ever....whoever made that statement is crazy

Great reaction to a great song! It brings tears to old timers like me.
You're such an empath. Love it. Your joy brings me joy.
I saw them first time in Germany 1982 ish. Signals tour. Went to 3 concerts after, they're my favorite band. Its nice seeing other people react like this. Cheers.
Watching you fall in love with them and the welling up of your joy is wonderful. That is the power of live music.
That was fun! You’re such a sweetie. You should also listen to the original recording, from 1988. It’s a really gorgeous song! Hugs! 😊❤️
I want to hear everything
I simply adore your reactions… most others granted they greatly appreciate their greatness however too analytical versus the OMG!
that you emotionally put into your reactions. Love it!
A pretty redhead who is into rush ... oh my, where have you been all my life?
I freely admit, when Hold Your Fire was released, 18 year old me didn't get this song. I just couldn't relate to the message at all. Now, it hits WAY different to 55 year old me. When you get a chance, check out the Army Band's version recorded when Neil passed, it's fantastic: th-cam.com/video/aAPSK_cV5n0/w-d-xo.html
There are very few songs that will bring me to tears...but that version of Time Stand Still is at the top of the list.
Discovered Rush at 18, bought Show of Hands based on recommendation from Bass Player magazine... And my experience mirrors yours
@@herkimertryon oh wow! I love stories like this. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
The only thing that makes this better is your reaction!!!
Awesome!!
@@christinerettig6184 Great story. Please thank him for his service on my behalf.
Two more live concert performances you might like are: "YYZ", Live in Rio and Neil Peart's drum solo Live in Frankfurt.
Yes, I was thinking the same, YYZ, Live in Rio.
Yep you said it! In an interview Geddy mentioned that it was about, getting older and wanting to feel things deeper and harder than ever, even at an older age...there's just no way someone young could have done this song....
Free Will 🔥🔥🔥
You can safely ignore anyone that says Rush isn't known for their lyrics 😂 That being said, one of the best live rock performances of all times is them playing YYZ live in Rio, which is an instrumental. That didn't stop the massive audience from singing along though 😄
As always, thanks for sharing your journey with us!
If you like these lyrics, do The Garden, live performance.
I'm mesmerized. You look and sound amazingly like someone I once knew and loved. I miss her terribly.
How kind!
If you want to see an audience participate, watch Rush perform 'YYZ Live in Rio'.
One of their best lyrics. Check out the version of this song by the "US army band". But have a box of tissues handy!
🤗 I say again.... 😄 Your smile is infectious! 😍 Love your Rush reactions! 🥰🐰
Anyone who says Rush aren't known for their lyrics should pay much closer attention to such songs as "Roll The Bones", "The Pass", and "Nobody's Hero", to name just three of an immense catalog.
you understand RUSH...because your an angel....wish you the best...
Love this song,3 genius guys❤❤❤
If no one already mentioned it, the female singing backing vocal on this song is Aimee Mann. In the music video, she was the camera operator
Have to add, if you don't know who Aimee Mann is, she was the lead vocalist of Til Tuesday 😊
Some of the greatest and deepest lyrics ever.
That must have come from a Rolling Stobe article
Do the live version of THE GARDEN. you'll definitely cry a bit... or a lot... It's their last song on their last album.
Oh, gosh! 😭
We're all kids when we watch rush, and it's glorious
The Manhattan Project
Red Sector A
The Mission
Anthem
Turn my face to the sun. Make each sensation a little bit stronger
Music theory and analysis is helpful for learning the “math” of music, but it is the evoking of emotion that makes a piece great.
