I think Dragonbane is one of freshest additions of late to the fantasy TTRPG products. I don´t agree with saying this is an only introductory system quite on the contrary. It is so much more in every aspect regarding to D&D play. The system is intuitive, the rules are not a burden with that countless customization crazyness, easy to get by and well-rounded. Thumbs-up and worth a try. It is now my go-to fanatsy system and setting.

Doesn't it have around, 16 monsters and some 35 spell, no rules for castles, no maritime rules, no hex crawl or dungeoneering rules, no tables for treasure just cards. Pretty sparse. Introductory rules to me.

@@galinor7 Their 3rd party supplemental OGL allows anyone to create any spells, monsters, classes, abilities, and more. Not to mention more official material on the way. The only thing off-limits is the core ruleset, which is perfectly easy yet comprehensive...no fluff. I think it's well set up to be much more than an introductory RPG.

Agree. Its a rocknmetal solid ttrpg! Only miss more content and tables with material durability like forcsealed doors etc. Stll.. A robust framework in that f.example, you can homebrew easly. I've just started to make new dragon vaiants and include new elements/ effects/ dmg types. Can adjust armor, hp, dmg of different attacks and do other than fire breath

The best joke in the whole thing is on the magic mishap table. When you fumble a spell roll (roll 20; a "Demon"), and then roll a 20 "Demon" again on the mishap table, your character actually summons a demon. There is lots of clever bits like this in the text and tables. I think it succeeds in being deadly, but with some dark humor to lighten it up. It's my second favorite RPG right now second only to Call of Cthulhu. Great review! Thanks

My only complaint is that for a product that is very good for beginners it has too little information about how to GM and what to do if you finished the adventures that came in the book. So it could be a good RPG for a seasoned RPG player to introduce the hobby for newcomers, but an all newcomer group will be more lost than D&D after the first adventures and D&D already has a big problem with that.

100%, I really wish it had some guidance on creating monsters, items and maybe spells.

9:41 I am doing the solo game with friends as gmless guided play. It is really interesting because I think it is building my GM skills, improv skills, and encouraging players to both add to the game and be okay with interesting things happening to their characters.

  • @Neruomir

The initiative where far more usefull than i expected especially when handling multi action monsters as it is really fast so long as you don't use the card trade option. The improvised weapons get old fast and the treasure cards are good when pulling stuff off on the fly.

Already ordered a copy from my FLGS but was interested in your opinion. It's interesting that both you and Diversity and Dragons mentioned the lack of mirth but by the sounds of it there's a good chance this will replace Pendragon as my goto TTRPG for introducing new people to the hobby.

I bought this box, skeptical of its playfulness. And I have to say, the standees and the cards actually inspired me. The rulesystem is basic, but flexible, and puts itself nicely in between real rules-light games and the crunchy ones. Sure, it is made to be expanded, so we will get a lot more to spend our money on in the future.

Regarding the paucity of the advertised mirth in the game, I’m wondering whether you will review the Monty Python game (by Exalted Funeral, I think)?

    • @liberalhyena9760
      @liberalhyena9760 ปีที่แล้ว

Monty Python’s Cocurricular Mediaeval Reenactment Programme is the title of the game I alluded to above. As far as I can see it hasn’t yet been published though a quick start version of the rules can be downloaded free of charge from Exalted Funeral.
Also in relation to classic British comedy, there was a Red Dwarf RPG at one time, though its current availability appears doubtful.

This is a BRP derivative. Roll under experience check system. A little similar to Chaosium's Pendragon in mechanic.Very pretty yet rather thin on the ground rules wise. A good starter set

      @Sensorium19 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@lucasterable Basic Roll Play. It's the generic rules mechanic that Chaosium is associated with now. It's a d100 system, but the other aspects mentioned by the OP are accurate as similarities.

I exclusively play solo because my schedule only allows me to play for 30 or 40 minutes at a time.
I also love being gm and player at the same time. It allows me to run my game exactly as I want it without players mucking it up.
Also, I abhor playing online. That is the thing that doesn't scratch the itch for me. I hate screens.

The game has a lot of material available from earlier additions, so I won't disappear quickly the kickstarter made €670,000. Personally I think 5th is turgid, wokery, I quit after 3rd. It lost its myth and became a commeral magic the gathering clone a feats,(substitute cards), based game. BRP is a good logical system. Call of Cthulhu, MagicWorld, Mythras etc. Dragonbane appears all baubles and Christmas lights but little substance. Still it may improve.

As I said in Double D's review of this product (where I went on an on), I think Free League mostly produces overly polished turds. Fancy, slickly laid out, well illustrated garbage. This may be the new "it" game, but it is a flash in the pan that will evaporate into the ether inside of the next year. To summarize my complaints it appears systemically uninteresting and reductive, decisions they made regarding character types and core mechanics where schizophrenic at best and complete nonsense at worst. It's beholden to many current gimmicks that frankly don't work and are best avoided. Throwing in half-baked Solo Play rules is just chasing another trend. It doesn't even look playtested, like many over-produced products nowadays.
From what I've seen it's a (not very well done) frankenbrew of D&D5E, Forbidden Lands, Dragon Warriors, Savage Worlds, Into the Odd, and Runequest. It fails to build it's own mechanical identity from the elements it outright steals from these other games. "Ducks like Runequest," "Roll low like Dragon Warriors," "Initiative Cards like Savage Worlds," etc.
I don't think it would make a good starter game because of false expectations it would set up for younger players and it's weird obsession with mechanical gimmickry. I flatly disagree with this review for this reason. I also think your ratings for it are colored by the thought that it's a "starter set" rather than a core game. Can I play a 3 year campaign with the materials from the core alone? If not, it's not a good core game. I doubt the box has 3 months worth of material. I think our standards are slipping in RPGs as a whole due to how normie the hobby populace is getting.
Thanks for the review Grim, while I call you out a bit above I don't do it out of malice or ill-content. I thank you for the time, money, and effort you put into making this review.

I just think it makes for a good starter RPG, and isn't D&D, so that's worth a lot.

      Hi!
Swedish person here with my two cents!
The game is the new version of a swedish version of chaosiums magic world. In the late 80 they converted to a d20 instead of the d100.
The game share its roots with runequest. It has nothing to do with either dragon warrior or savage world…
The cards comes from free legues other game forbidden lands…
The game has many of its genes from the old versions with Drakar och Demoner (as the games was called) in combination with some new game ideas.
I think it will work well as an introductory rpg as it is easy in mechanic and dont have the power creep of 5 edition.
There is no classes only occupations, ie what the character did before adventuring. During adventuring it is up to the player to develop the character in the direction he or she wants. So no niche protection.
With ease of play it still manage to have very tactical feel to combat and the combat economy makes monsters dangerous!
All in all a gem of a game!

I have no opinion on Dragonbane, as I haven’t tried it.
Their Year Zero games are excellent, though. Which make up most of their product line.
“3 years of campaign in the core box” is unrealistic standard, as it has much more to do with GMs tenacity and inventiveness than the game itself.

Dragonbane is a new edition of an immensely popular Swedish game that has been played all over Scandinavia since the early 80's. It's been going for over 40 years, and I'm sure it will continue on no matter what.
