    If you want to learn a new school of magic, you need to take the Magic Talent heroic ability when your character gets a new heroic ability, you can't just spend a normal skill advancement. What's cool is that this is not restricted to mages - any character can take this heroic ability and start learning magic.

      Ahh..cool! THANK YOU for the clarification!

    General magic is really not a school of its own, but rather general spells that all magic users can choose from, no matter what school they're trained in. 🙂

    As a DM from the 1970's, and having watched several videos describing the game, I would rate your explanation of the game as #1. Well done.

    A monster book has been released for Dragonbane. with new monsters and new playable races. There is also a kickstarter for the old world in Dragonbane called Altor and it will focus on the continent of Ereb and the Copper Sea, with the dreaded black pirate ducks (mallards).

      Looking forward to the world book. I have a first look of the bestiary in my live streams.

      Not sure I earned the honorific, but I do love this game and hope I get to play it at some point!

    It's very Runequest/BRP inspired, which is a positive. Albeit on a d20 scale rather than d100 plus some simplification & modification.

    • @DMTalesTTRPG

      One day I will have to pick up Runequest so I can see the similarities myself! #thingstodo

      @@DMTalesTTRPG - The most recent version of Runequest is probably the crunchiest edition I've seen since it added a bunch of setting-specific stuff. So it might be confusing. There are numerous setting-neutral versions out there, however, such as Mythras (from those who released the previous edition of Runequest) and simplified versions like OpenQuest. Another good and innovative derivative is Jackals (Bronze Age fantasy) from Osprey Games. There's a lot out there, some heavier than others.

    • @DMTalesTTRPG
      @DMTalesTTRPG  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @NefariousKoel would you start with BRP?

      @@DMTalesTTRPG - Yeah, the new Basic Roleplaying System from Chaosium is a good place to start. If you're okay with a "universal" system. Just came out in print! You'll recognize a lot of it if you're familiar with Call Of Cthulhu.

    I am running 3 games of this on a VTT and I absolutely am loving it as a Referee. It has really helped me lean into the joy of "playing to find out what happens" because the rules and adventure have such great encounter tables and you roll encounters so frequently.
    Some players have noted that progression can feel slow, and the base adventure is very stingy regarding new heroic abilities. I have begun slowly buffing advancement by letting players spend 2 advancement marks to roll to advance 1 skill once per session, but they have to commit to that skill before the roll. Also, I think when they are richer they will start to take advantage of the "teaching" rules so I don't want to buff too much yet.
    Highly recommend as a DM

    We've been playing in since November 2023. Love the game. The box set has tones of value in it and I cna honestly say that eh pre-gens have been great. They've really evolved over months of play.

      @@DMTalesTTRPG Having spent many years playing TTRPG adjacent board games, there are a lot of mechanics that seem familiar and very well done. The advancement mechanics are also intriguing. Great stuff!

    It's interesting that I don't think we heard anything of Drakar och Demoner here in Sweden's neighbor before this edition. Not that i regret coming across the Finnish BECMI edition as my first rpg. I guess we came relatively close with Runequest also being among the first games translated.

    This seems to share mechanisms with Forbidden Lands, yes? Do you prefer one of these over the other?

    • @DMTalesTTRPG
      @DMTalesTTRPG  3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I’ve played this more than Forbidden Lands. There’s aspects I like of this better, and some things I like in Forbidden Lands better. I do like the “fast” and “slow” actions in FL, it mixes combat up a bit more. But Dragonbane is less bleak, and I like that a lot.

    Regarding combat mechanics for the monsters, it would be fairly easy to reskin that to the Monster Manual or Tome of Beasts. Them you'll have a plethora of monsters to draw from.
