The boxed set is not a starter set- it is the core game. The core hardback came later, and consolidated the card-based treasure and improvised weapons from the box into tables in the back of the book.
While you are correct, I’m afraid I can’t give you any points, as you forgot to say “Um, actually”. For real though, I see your point and someone has also made it. Perhaps I could have done more to convey just how great of a value it is.
Love to see more people talking about Dragonbane. I’ve done a few videos on the subject, but have not seen a lot of channels covering it… certainly not as much as I think it merits, based upon the system and the contents of the starter. Nice review!
Agree, it’s a great system, amazingly priced, and the people at free league are awesome. I hope it snowballs over time. Also nice to have another creator stop by, I’ll have to check out what you’ve got!
He’s right! Starter sets don’t include all the rules of the games they are designed for. Many don’t have character creation at all. This is the complete game. It’s just insane value for your buck! I’d recommend the box set over the hardcover book version of the game.
It’s been pretty fun. I did almost tpk one of my groups over the weekend, but they managed to pull through. It inspired me to record a build guide for a tank today. Apparently that’s important in Dragonbane… (I did warn my players when they told me they were all ranged and squishy)
Remember that a lot of the Fumble tables and such are optional. I personally will be letting a player roll on it at their choice and will be tying that into my modification to the advancement system.
Nice. What are you doing different with advancement? And for sure. Im actually into the tables. Can’t wait for a mage to change age categories or summon a demon. Lol. I was just disappointed with that one option. Felt poorly considered.
@homebrewedtabletop I view it as a Mirth and Mayham aspect. As for advancement, I am adopting a variant/homerule from CoC and BRP where you can get multiple marks. In our case, each one will be a slash in the pip. This slash gives a bonus to the result of the advancement roll.
I feel you, I’m a long time gm, but Dragonbane is a pretty tough system so I feel like it’s more just giving the party a fighting chance. That’s more why I’m doing these.
Short term play due to less crunch? Not really. While your skills may max out eventually , your hit points are always low. This means the PCs are always challenged. One of my longest campaigns was Pendragon, which is similar system. And every GM should run Pendragon at least once (The Boy King campaign logs in at 80 sessions.) High crunch games eventually break down at higher levels so once players get all the cool toys hey are no longer challenged. In DB just because the players have found all the cool toys sooner due to less crunch, it doesn't mean the game is over until the table says it's over.
I completely agree about the high level issues with most ttrpg systems. I think you are responding to when I stated my personal preference is for higher crunch systems for my longer form campaigns. And it’s just that, a personal preference. I like complex games in general and finding ways to optimize is one of my favorite things to do in games. Low crunch systems can be “solved” a lot easier so I get less entertainment out of them. Again, just a personal preference, that’s really all I meant. I’ll give a look at Pendragon, I don’t think I have ran it before.
Reason for the ducks in dragonbane is actually bc the original Drakar & Demoner (dragons and demons) of which this game is based is initself based on RuneQuest. But yeah, alot of original drawings of the ducks looked a bit like Donald. Some people loved the ducks, others hated it. Just like now 😆 But afaik , the wolfmen are more "original" then the ducks (relatively speaking). Could be wrong
Oh that’s interesting. Thanks for the info and correction. Do you happen to know if they got angry like ye old Donald as well? And yeah, idk how the earlier ones were but I almost TPKed one of my groups over the weekend. They where down a person and while i adjusted, it wasn’t enough. Actually made a tank build guide video because of it that will be out soon, and consider doing some other build guides for those interested in more long form stuff that don’t want as much randomness deciding their characters fate. Will definitely check out the monster book. I also thought the adventure book deserved its own review. It’s very well done and something more people should copy.
Great view. I was just getting into Dragonbane and you pointed out a pile of things I hadn't noticed. It is a joy to see a game like this that's so obviously designed to be played and playtested heavily to make sure it works.
The mallard is for Runequest. Dragonbane originally was a d100 system that branched out with its expert version to d20. Glorantha is a dope world you should look into as well. It's the default setting for Runequest.
Dragonbane is fantastic! I have been running a campaign and it works great. Heroes always have to realize that Death is around the corner so be careful. The level system is brilliant and so smooth. I really like magic is rare and powerful. Oh don't roll a demon (20) when casting magic......... The monster attack table is one of my favorite things! Every monster has 6 different things they can do during the combat turn! I really like this game!
Thanks for the feedback! Currently I’m working on Tales of the Valient, Vaesen, all three major VTTs, and several more! So I’ll keep pumping them out as fast as I can! I do latest everything that makes sense to before the reviews so they do take a bit. But glad the quality over quantity feel comes through!
@@homebrewedtabletop interesting. Tales of the Valiant hasn't really sparked interests at all. To me it just seems like it's a 5e with non OGL language or something.
@@oettrpg yep, I agree. And largely it is, but I think it’s also a significant improvement over 5e, similar to what pathfinder did with 3.5 I think some bad takes on it have also not helped. Also, sorry for the delayed response, the youtube creator app is malfunctioning, so I didn’t see your reply.
This is a great explanation video. Well done. Very helpful 🎉. Do you have a favorite system? You said you like crunchy like GURPS - is GURPS your favorite?
Thank you! I try to put as much care into my reviews as the rpg/game devs do with their work. GURPS is indeed my favorite system, although it has its hang ups. I actually did a couple of videos on it here if you’re really interested. But the tldr is that while it’s amazing, it’s also too much for more people (myself included at times).
That crit fail hit youself table result suggests to me there may be more dedign weaknesses in the system... Going to have to check the starter rules out.
If you find anything I havnt covered and want to send it my way, it would be greatly appreciated. I’ve also got a list of all the things I don’t like. If you want to see it, drop me a dm in discord and Im happy to share. They are just my notes for a future video, so not something I want to put out to the wider internet to be misunderstood.

😅 No worries. Great set, great game.
Dragonbane is an almost perfect marriage between BRP, Year Zero and D&D

The art in this book is top notch.

Sure, either way. I think when you include dice though, that makes me think starter, but I see what you mean as well.

been curious about dragonbane lately, great video thanks!
It’s crazy on sale right now, and honestly worth picking up if you have the funds and think you might be at all interested.

Thanks Daedric, I appreciate it, and know you wouldn’t just say that.
Don’t encourage min/max. Most of us GMs are fed up with it
I feel you, I’m a long time gm, but Dragonbane is a pretty tough system so I feel like it’s more just giving the party a fighting chance. That’s more why I’m doing these.
Play a system that doesn't require min/maxing and leave the ttrpgs that masquerade as skirmish games alone

Ps. In the original Dragons and Demons, characters werent as easily killed as in this one. Thats the biggest drawback for me.
