Great video. The X-keys solution is a great idea but it occurs to me that if your console had been customised to your own specification it could have incorporated the pistons you need. So my question is, what would be the best arrangement of pistons if you had a free choice in the matter?
Thanks Benjamin! I agree 100% and would recommend getting those pistons built in from the beginning - when I purchased this console, it was one of the first midi-only units made by Content (new frontier!) and was based largely on an existing model of theirs - hence piston arrangement is similar to found on many European mainland organs. As I've grown and understood the use of pistons and registration over the past couple of years, I think that 6-per-division would be my minimum next time around, 8 ideal. (plus 10 Generals, stepper advance and reverse for each manual, and coupler pistons).
@@jerrymartin79 Hi Jerry, thank you for taking the trouble to reply. My reason for asking is that I'm looking to buy a new setup myself. A previous console had the standard 10 generals plus stepper -/+, the latter duplicated by two toe pistons. I'm not someone who likes to rely heavily on pistons but I found it a pain to program the stepper for every piece I was working on. Sometimes you just want to sit down and play and know that some sensible registrations are there, ready to go! I think that, as a minimum, another two toe pistons - for Gt-Pd and Sw-Gt - would be part of my own specification.

Having been using the technology since 2003, you have obvious acquired much of your information from multiple sources. Are there any literary sources that you would recommend to someone like me, who is an experienced organist and in possession of a relatively good system, but who is new to hauptwerk?
I would appreciate any advice you would care to provide.

Sorry for my delay Otho - there are lots of good references out there; my biggest reference is the forums on hauptwerk.com - however although this volume is a little old now, it still covers much of the details that are still very applicable today and I can recommend it a.co/d/4bVcCsG
Thank you for this video - I have my divisionals but the problem is that the Great pistons cancel the stops drawn on the other manuals (as do the Swell pistons) What have I done wrong?
Sorry for my delay getting to you - it sounds like the "scope" of both your great and swell is too wide: to check - in the "registration" control panel, just illuminate the scope button, and then press one of your swell/great pistons - it will draw out all the stops that you have set that piston to effect. Reduce it to the amount of stops you want to select, then ensuring scope is still illuminated, use "set" and the piston in question to limit it.

Hello jerry! Great video. I have a question. I am using a daw to control hauptwerk but I don't seem to understand how I can just assign a combination to a midi note or program change like you do with the buttons. I wonder if theres a default channel or midi variable specific for that as ita with crescendo pedal (ch 7 breath) and swell (ch3 expression) which i found out by just trying every possible combination. What i would like to do is to create different combinations and trigger them via midi to change them during a song. Be it via a note or program change or a value of any variable. It seems intuitive to do in the settings but then it just doesnt seem to work...
Hi Vittorio - thank you so much for your comment and checking out my video. I do not have experience with using a DAW directly with Hauptwerk. However I imagine it HAS to be possible. I would try using the [master generals] - rather than trying to use auto-detect I would consider being specific and picking the channel/note-change you want to trigger - you can get to this by right-clicking the master general and going to "Adjust MIDI/trigger" (rather than autodetect) - in the ensuing dialog you can at a very specific level chose the MIDI/other input you want to trigger the control. Then in hauptwerk set up your registration presets on the master generals and trigger them from your DAW in that way.
(to get to master generals - use view menu-> registration - then you can store combinations of stops to each master general as you would at a physicial organ a) draw the stops you want b) click [setter] c) click the master general button 1-20 into which you want to save that combination)
Is there a way to set the expression pedal to universally work with all organs?
Thanks , Dan. I do not believe there is a way to do that globally (yet) in HW - keyboards and expression controllers must be mapped to each newly-loaded sampleset.
How is it you’re getting the trigger to activate constantly on each button press for the cued stepper buttons? Whenever I click or step up through the set cued buttons, the trigger shuts off and no registrations are changed.
When you "autodetect'" your control - there is a check box you may need to try - I have sometimes found issues with that.
What are the reversibles aside from the scoped combinations?
So the reversible pistons are just that: if you assigned one to "gt to ped" - each time you press it it would toggle the position of the piston (so you can assign them to anything, or groups of things, you would like to toggle)
