How to Control Hauptwerk from a commercial organ

  • In this video I visit Three Counties Organs in Somerset, England, and meet Martin, the business owner, who kindly shows us how to use a stand-alone commercial organ to control Hauptwerk V4 running on a Windows 10 PC.
    This is a very basic level 'How To' aimed at non technical people who want to see step by step exactly what to do in order to use an existing organ to control Hauptwerk.
    I hope it helps someone.
    For more on Virtual Organ hardware and conversions, please take a look at my website www.hauptwerkhardware.com.

    Fascinating. I see many home organs at second-hand shops going for little money. Looks like one could set up a convincing “cathedral organ” starting with one of these cheap purchases.

      Indeed, it seems that online, reasonable digital organs still command upwards of £1000 but I spotted an Eminent 325 which is an almost identical console to the one in this video, just a bit older, for £100 in a Salvation Army shop. It's been a godsend for practice, even more so now I know it's not hard to set up Hauptwerk. Although it will be rather limiting to not have pistons and expression pedals, so maybe some modification to the organ is required for that.

      ..which is why I stick with version 4. 😉 Unfortunately, being on Social Security doesn't allow me to make large expenditures like this and the paid sample sets, so I have collected about a dozen free and demo sample sets over the years to use with the free or full demo version of Hauptwerk 4. (You still get the periodic chime on the full demo, but it's usually not loud enough to be too annoying.)🙂

    Thanks for this video - this was the most helpful explanation I found on how to set up Hauptwerk on an electronic organ.
    My laptop's sound card was not fast enough - we were getting a delay between the organ manuals and the sound - so I purchased a PreSonus audio interface - that solved the delay/latency issue --
    We were looking at an expensive repair on a 30 year old organ - not sure it it would have been worth it - the organ, a Baldwin D-911 had midi so I'm glad I was able to give Hauptwerk a try -

    If you have an older console that *DOESN'T* have MIDI ports, there's a ton more work to do and requires complete disassembly of the console, manuals, and stop tabs to install the switching and wiring required to trigger a MIDI encoder board that can 'talk' to the Hauptwerk software. Generally anything made 20+ years ago won't have a MIDI interface, even though MIDI has been around much longer. It's very easy to get several thousand dollars tied up in a 'conversion' as opposed to having MIDI ready consoles/keyboards available. (BTW, the only reason you would need to hook up the cable from the computer to the MIDI IN port on the organ, would be if you wanted to play a MIDI file on the computer and operate the organ console remotely. Hauptwerk only needs a MIDI OUT line from the organ *TO* the computer to function.)😉

    Thank you for this great video. Now I know how to connect my instrument to my computer however I still have a question. In this video your organ has only 1 midi in/output that allows you in to control both manuals and pedal in Hauptwerk. My Johannus opus 910 organ (dutch brand) has 3 midi outputs; one for Great, one for Swell and one for Pedal. Does this mean I have to use 3 midi to usb cables to my computer in order to work properly with Hauptwerk? I'm a beginner in this software, knowing little so far, so before buying Hauptwerk and a new PC I want to have some more information about the setup. Can you help me? Thanks in advance. Kind regards, Sandy

  • @AF-001

    A simple midi hook-up will only get you so far. If, for example, you wish to employ some of the original console controls (stops etc), then things become much more complicated. All these things are possible via bought-in hardware but takes 'conversion' of an existing organ to a whole new level.

    I have a mint-condition two-manual and full pedalboard BALDWIN 46C electronic organ at home. I suspect that it is too early an instrument to have ANY Midi connection hardware, but I could be wrong. Before purchasing Hauptwerk software and the interface cords, I will investigate my organ and see if it does come with any MIDI "ins and outs" - and if not, the next step would seem to learn if there are connectors that can be installed into the BALDWIN. A couple of questions. How do you manage if the Hauptwerk organ version has more stops than the organ you are linking Hauptwerk to? Secondly, if the pistons and Swell pedal on the organ are not linked to Midi, will these still work? ie with thumbpistons that can be set on the organ without Midi to select certain stop combinations, will I still be able to use these to set up and select eg Gt Open 8ft, Octave 4ft, Nazard 2 2/3, and Fifteenth 2ft

    • @martinrussell8436
      @martinrussell8436 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the Haupwerk organ has more stops than your console has stop controls, you can either use touchscreens for stop control or install more controls on the console. The former is easy, the latter potentially very difficult. Alternatively, you could install one of our new stop control modules, which includes a full capture system.
      If the expression pedals are not linked to midi, they can usually be easily "midified" and will operate perfectly.
      As regards thumb pistons, you may come across a console on which they simply send a midi message when pressed and can be linked to Hauptwerk as required. Others, such as the instrument featured in this video, operate differently. Selecting a stop will obviously send a midi message. Pressing a piston on which nothing is set will send nothing. When a piston is programmed to select one or more stops or couplers and is subsequently pressed, the midi messages created by each of the stored stops or couplers are sent. This also allows the whole capture system to operate independently of the sound generation system. If the console stop controls were mapped to Hauptwerk stops then the console capture system could be used with no further setup of Hauptwerk and completely independently of the Hauptwerk capture system.

      I use a couple of Novation mini launchpads with my Opus 7 organ, attached above the rail on the front panel. Makes it look like a space ship! You have to memorise the stop/coupler setup, but I find that part of the fun. The Opus 7 pistons also put out MIDI so there’re useful too, but most of the stop tabs do not. I also run 2 of my 8 audio channels back through the Opus 7, as the speakers are quite effective. And you can mirror that audio out of the organ for extra grunt.

    Hi Hauptwerk Hardware, I hope you're well. Sorry for my rant regarding Hauptwerk. I decided enough was enough, I've been in touch with them for years and each time, ignored, this time, I think it was due to a threat of international press involvement of a company guilty of disability discrimination, I received initial contact from one of the tech support who stated he had forwarded this email to Bret himself. Let's see. I genuinely would love to use this software because as a composer, I need access to an organ that's completely voiceable in the respect of recalling and blinding stops, divisions and general piston functionality, etc. I want to be able to use this software like any sighted person can :)
    Here's a question for you. If I were to sort out 4 61 key keyboards and have them in a case to fashion a form of DIY console from scratch, how could a set of stops (button based) be made to serve as a complete group of stops either side of a console. the idea being that say as a 4 manual, 4 rows of stops say 15 or so down per side to be able to provide functions for stops, couplers, etc and then stops that could be configured as pistons, is that something that could be made?

    • @HauptwerkHardware
      @HauptwerkHardware  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not usually - This is because when you operate the stops and play the organ its sound will be coming out of those internal speakers. Sure you can plug the output from your virtual organ into the Aux input on the real organ, but if you have hooked up the 'real' organ using Midi and you're using the 'real' stops to control your virtual organ, then both will sound at the same time. You can do it so long as you leave all the 'real' stops off and operate your virtual stops by touchscreens or some other method. Hope that helps. 🙂
