----- The Canfield and McKay families have been feuding for so long, no one remembers the reason the feud started in the first place. One stormy night in 1810, family patriarch John McKay and his rival James Canfield kill each other. After the tragic death of her husband, John's wife decides her son Willie will not suffer the same fate. She moves to New York to live with her sister, who after the mother's death raises him without telling him of the feud.
Twenty years later, Willie receives a letter informing him that his father's estate is now his. His aunt tells him of the feud, but he decides to return to his Southern birthplace anyway to claim his inheritance. On the train ride, he meets a girl, Virginia. They are shy to each other at first, but become acquainted during many train mishaps. At their destination, she is greeted by her father and two brothers; she, it turns out, is a Canfield. Willie innocently asks one of the brothers where the McKay estate is. The brother offers to show him the way, but stops at every shop in search of a pistol to shoot the unsuspecting Willie. By the time he obtains one, Willie has wandered off. Willie is very disappointed to discover the McKay "estate" is a rundown home, not the stately mansion he had imagined. Later, however, he encounters Virginia, who invites him to supper.

What a lovely movie! Keaton researched the period and they built that train based on the 1825 Rocket. Glorious.

What is absolutely amazing to me is that steam rail train? Was that made just for this movie? Incredible how it could even stay on the tracks? I never heard of such a machine, is this just Keaton's invention? Can you imagine the 'boiler' for that engine? What specs where there for pressure? It was probably made of tin and they are throwing wood into it like is was a 'Bessemer Furnace'? Incredible it did not blow up and kill half the cast!

      I know I'm late but...
According to Wikipedia the locomotive was a fully functional replica of George Stephenson's "Rocket" engine built in 1829 (and still preserved in England). The track was their own, built for the production. And as for safety... there were no specs (at least not for the original, the movie reproduction would have had to be built to 1923 requirements), and the first railroad fatality in the U.S. happened when an engine very similar to that did, in fact, explode.

@@sturmovik5448 The Rocket replica is better in some respects than others built much more recently; the safety valve forward on the boiler was often mistaken for a second steam dome, being encased in a copper bonnet. Here it is authentic, but with a more prominent weight arm. The passenger cars are copied from the converted stage coaches used on the Mohawk and Hudson Railroad in 1831.

I find that rocket replica so strange it looks so barebones (even more then the original) and yet it works?
The controls look so strange in just a little box ontop of the firebox but it has to be actually steam powered. Not only because most sources say it is but also because they had no fancy models or effects they could use.
Sure I could maybe be powered by a combustion engine if it wasn't for all the steam and smoke which I don't think smoke machines existed back in the 1920's.
I think the reason I feel it looks odd is because of the sped up footage along with it not actually being a standard gauge locomotive running on 36" track (or atleast so I've read)
