    Got to LOVE the Buster. The life preserver sank and the anchor floats. Funnest sight gag man in the world!!! A pancake to fix a dripping hole in the wall. Who would have thought. I Love his logic, if you can't eat it, fix something with it.

    Great music selection here, too.
    Though I do feel shame at the thought that the musicians weren't paid more than a dime a day...

    • @justforever96
      @justforever96 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thats not as bad as it sounds, considering what a dime was worth back then. There were many people who worked far harder, longer hours for the same pay. Its basically the equivalent of minimum wage today. you could live on it, although not luxuriously.

    • @justforever96
      @justforever96 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And of course these are not THE musicians, this is just a soundtrack someone has put to the film. The group you aere hearing was a more successful, better paid group that had got a record deal with a studio and had records released, which is why their music still exists. The films were literally silent, although they would usually come with a musical score. Each local theater would hire an orchestra to play the music live while the film was playing (or just a pianist if it was a poor, small theater). These are the 'poorly paid' musician you are referring to. Its not like Keaton's studio hired some band to record the music for the film and paid them a pittance, and of course the actual wages received depended on where the film was playing and what the market would support. A higher class theater would hire better players and pay them better, a lower class theater would hire guys off the street for as little as possible. If wages were low, it reflected the fact that musicians were everywhere, far more than the demand. If a player didnt want to play for a dime a day, they could easily find some other guy who would be willing to do it. it was not like it was a conspiracy to screw over musicians or something. Symphony orchestra musicians were not exactly overflowing with money either, and by the standards of the time it was considered fair. Playing music was not considered 'real work', since you were not providing manual labor nor using your brains to coordinate productive work like management. It was considered marginally skilled non-essential work, sort of like being a typist, only less essential. They hadnt yet developed the idea that skilled musicians ought to be lucratively paid for it. And in reality, most musicians still barely make a living. Most of them need a 'real' job to make ends meet. Its only the most skilled and talented that make a living, let alone get rich at it. Most people cant pay the rent just from what they make playing instruments. The guys playing the theaters back then were basically the equivalent of modern lounge singers, or the bands a local bar gets to come play live music. Hell, these days a lot of those groups dont even get paid, they do it for free, hoping to expand their fan base, to get their names out their, maybe that 1 in a million chance of meeting a scout or agent and getting signed. The ones who play regularly for pay rarely get more than minimum wage out of it. If they were worth more than that (or at least recognized as such), they probably wouldn't be playing in bars or nightclubs any more. They would have a record deal or be making it on tour (which is what modern success looks like).

    I guess Roman numeral were a problem back then too: 1922 = MCMXXII, MCMXIIX is meaningless (from the opening credits 19:26) edit: perhaps since everyone knew Roman numerals back then it was an inside joke.

    • @justforever96
      @justforever96 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You sure they weren't trying to write 1918? M = 1000, CM = 900, X = 10, IIX = 8, so MCMXIIX = 1918. I'm not even sure how else you would render it, unless it was MCMIIXX, which doesnt seem correct. The first film was from 1922, that doesn't mean ALL of them were from that year. Indeed, that would be unlikely.

    • @justforever96
      @justforever96 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No, these were all very clear and easy to see when they were new, It entirely depends on the quality of the film and how carefully they were stored. old film degrades very easily, and thats why so many of them are in such poor shape now. Some were stored properly in cool, dark vaults, others were stacked in a shed somewhere, Most of these were considered worthless old junk for years, and the majority of old films were ruined or simply thrown away until decades later when they suddenly became valuable artifacts to be preserved. Even some of Keaton and Chaplins films were lost, in spite of them being huge stars, but countless lesser known films were lost, entirely or partially, in those years.

    Isn't it funny watching a movie like this compared to the garbage that has come our way from a Hollywood that wants to destroy civilization instead of creating something to last forever such as a film like this or the great ones made from this time onward sadly lacking today.

    • @justforever96
      @justforever96 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I am no fan of modern Hollywood, but these were hardly powerful films of artistic merit intended to last the ages. They were formulaic light comedy, basically disposable entertainment shorts to give a few laughs for a month or two, when they would be obsolete and thrown away. thats why so many didnt survive. None of them were very creative or meaningful, and they almost all followed the same predictable gags and low brow humor. They are mostly significant because they let you see the origins of many techniques and gags that were standard fare for decades later, right into the present in some cases, and because it is interesting to see how they made do in spite of the primitive technology of the times. I like them because their simple, clean humor and technique, but its not great art or anything, and if it wasnt for the excesses of later comedy, striving to stay fresh and relevant, they would hardly be worth watching. Other than for a chuckle or two, which was the whole point after all.
