  • Continuing on from part 1, we explore Battery Pensacola and how they stored, transported, and moved the shells for the 12" disappearing guns up to where the guns were positioned. One of the shell hoist systems are still in place and was amazing to see!
After exploring most of the fort, we drove down to Battery 234 and Battery Cooper where they have other guns on display you can see up close and personal, including a 6" disappearing gun!
While on top of Battery Cooper you can see just how beautiful the Gulf of Mexico is and all of the white sandy beaches here.
We stopped off at the local favorite Peg Leg Pete's for some seafood lunch.

Thanks for pausing so we could read the historical signs. Added a lot to the videos.
During WWII many coastal forts were either closed or saw their manning significantly reduced. Officers and soldiers of the Coast Artillery Corps were retrained as anti aircraft gun crews. After the war the coastal forts were closed and the Air Defense Corps was established. They built Nike sites around every major city and they were are last system of defensive military fortifications.

The elevator hoist was powered by a armstrong motor, AKA known as brute force. This explains the large number of men on a gun crew.

  • @German_MDS

Those guns on the batteries must had a long range, cause they are really into the land, far from the waters. Great piece of history.

I am a muzzle loading fan but don't think I'd like to buy the powder for those old cannons. The newer ones were breech loaders; the projectile went in first and then powder. I think the powder was in bags and the more bags the more range until the breech or the barrel wouldn't handle the pressure. Headache city, Greg. What? (No more brick comments? We gotta get them when we can.) Hey, old Peg Leg could buy a pair of socks and they would last twice as long!

I keep expecting you to pull out your scale to measure things, or to get a comparison of size :D
Many tropical beaches are white due to parrot fish droppings, but looking at the amount of white in your video, that would have been a lot of parrot fish :P :D

Well, Sparky Projects, he did use what I would assume to be massive hands as a good size comparison on the fragment of the smoothbore cannon. I bet Adam could damn near shoulder one of those disappearing guns

I believe many of them were made right from the Pensacola area, and even the Mobile area. Inland there is lots of clay.
