When I was a youth, around 1979 [ i was 15 yo ] I had a little job working weekends, as a dishwasher, in Toronto. There was a literally underground Jamaican Night club, that I passed on my way to work, in the morning... Still going from the night before... Heavy sounds were erupting from this place..I am "White" and at that time would NEVER go down the stairs to that club no matter what...BUT..the sounds coming from there were so GOOD, that I would stop to listen...I could smell Ganja, and I liked to smoke it even then.. I thought those were the BEST, COOLEST sounds musically I ever heard...I was late for work many times, listening to these heavy bass and dub... I almost got fired for my tardiness, so I left home EXTRA early so I could sit out side the entrance, and listen for 15 -20 minutes.. I really wanted to KNOW how I could find records of that music... One day while I was listening, a big "Scary looking" guy with massive Dreadlocks came out and looked at me and asked me what I was doing. I just looked at him, I wanted to run away... I thought he was going to kill me, the way he was looking at me...So I told him, that I come here to listen to these really incredible sounds and music.. His face lightened up and he laughed..and asked me "Really? YOU like the sounds of Jamaican Music?..." I said Yes... I know some rocksteady, and that, my Mother is from Trinidad, But I never heard THIS kind of Reggae in my life... He told me, "Alright young Rasta..You wait here one moment..I'll be back"...I did not know what to think or do, I might be late..again..or maybe worse...I waited..he was gone a long time...I was just going to leave, when he came up from below and said "Hear this, I hope it will be satisfactory"..He handed me a cassette Tape, It said "King Tubby's" & on the other side it said "Jammy's Dubplate", It had a partial track list. Then the man said to me: "Now that is a gift...don't come back here and hang around the front door way..you can come around Sat & Sunday afternoon and ask For Bunny W-" [I still Have that cassette, stored away somewhere] That is the story of how I got turned on to King Tubby, and DUB. I still listen to Duubplates almost every day.
Yes, my friend. I will try to convert it, mind you, a lot of the material can "sort of" be found here on YT but it is NOT the same, they [the tape] were mixed up well and all analogue. Thank you, and much peace and love to you! PcbH.

Listening to Rodigan does not know much about King Tubbys, I know Tubbys in 1968 I went to Waterhouse to lived. I was not too far from him ,whenever time he started to played his sound system. I could stay at my house, and hear him very clearly. I have never been in his studio but I been into his yard ,and went to couple of dance when he was playing. During those days King Tubbys was the greatest sound system to ever played in Jamaica, before the police them destroyed his sound system in St Thomas. But no sound system could beat King Tubbys he was the greatest sound system, I have listened a lot of sound systems and. All now I don't hear nothing like King Tubbys at all, because he was a technician. I useto go there when URoy was the only man with King Tubbys himself in those days, operating and selecting records. I was in Waterhouse the day when King Tubbys got killed after leaving his recording studio, to his Duhaney Park. Since King Tubbys died the music industry in Jamaica is not like when he was around, because he was very creative. I don't remember from such time he was killed, anyone is ever got caught for his death.It is a very sad,sad day for the music fraternity in Jamaica until now. Let King Tubbys soul RIP,the greatest in the world.
In the old days there were many talented people without studio and modern musical equipment. In 2020 everyone can have high powerful studio and high end musical instruments at home but there is no talented people.
I have alot of memories sticking to King Tubby meets the Rockers uptown. When it came up as his best dub I sat here screaming yeaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!! :) Tears of happiness when I hear that tune...
Someone i know was flown out with a tv crew to film him ( and other jamaican acolytes) for a uk music program. When they got there he wouldnt let them in saying "he diddnt like the look of them". He was right to be cautious as he was shot a year later.
Just used to blast out these tunes in the 80's in my mates flat he got me into ska,reggae,dub,dance hall,best days,ghetto blasters on the London underground in a rub a dub stylee.
I don't know how old this documentary is, but thank you to all concerned. Sound-system, toasters (MCs), whale-size BASS. Beautiful beautiful beautiful. It's influenced the manner in which I have appreciated many modern and experimental forms of music: House, Jungle, Techno, Dub Techno, and Electronica are just a few to name. few. King Tubbies Meets... a Godly sound, and sweet. So much more to tell the truth.
Everyone who is a fan of KING TUBBY, can you all imagine what kind of Music Gold he could be making on today's technology?? He must be looking down from heaven making that music now!!! JAH BLESS...

Nobody cut dubs like tubs. Great hour of musical education.

This is gold. He just told me what his studio looked like. King Tubby. King Of Dub. King of Beats. Master Of Dub
@This Guy hell yeah
If King Tubby was still alive I would swim from Florida to Jamaica, just to shake his hand. HE WAS THE DUB MASTER.

Great to see such wonderful words from Noel Hawks. When he describes "King Tubby Meets The Rockers Uptown" as "other worldly" he nails it.

Great programme… a worthy tribute to the great King Tubby… for a man of such great genius, he seemed pretty humble. Thanks Mr Rodigan
