  • In this week's episode, we're going to run show you the affects of changing your aperture in-studio. As an important piece of the Exposure Triangle, understanding aperture is critical to surviving as a photographer. Changing aperture can affect your results in a handful of ways but here are a two of the most important:
    - Exposure -
Larger Aperture (Smaller F-Stop) will allow more light to hit the sensor resulting in a brighter exposure compared to a Smaller Aperture (Larger F-Stop) which will allow much less light to hit the sensor and result in a darker exposure.
    - Depth of Field -
Larger Aperture = Shallower Depth of Field which means less area in front of and behind focus area will appear sharp. Larger Apertures are often used to blur foreground/background elements isolating the subject.
Smaller Aperture = Deeper Depth of Field which means more area in front of and behind focus area will appear sharp.
    - Other things to note -
Depending on the particular lens, some will perform better at more middle-of-the-range apertures. For example, you may experience chromatic abberation at f/1.8 or lens diffraction at f/22 but will likely see the best results with regards to sharpness and image quality at apertures a bit further from the min/max. It's important to test your lens to know it's sweet spot and potential weak points.
In this demo, each of the 5 images I took were shot at the same base settings of 1/160th Shutter Speed and ISO 125. As my aperture was moved from 1.8 thru 7.1, I adjusted the light power at the same ratio which allowed me to maintain a consistent light output/exposure on Bailey. Now, of course, you will see a difference between the first image and the last with the first image appearing more "even" and the last including more "shadow" which is expected as those changes in aperture caused less ambient to be recorded. In addition, at f/1.8 you can see how the background was effected compared to the image taken at f/7.1.
And finally, if you like to shoot at smaller apertures, it is extremely important to keep up with your camera maintenance, specifically sensor cleanings. As you move up towards f/5.6 or higher, sensor dust will become way more prevalent causing you more time and work to clean your images up in post-processing.
Lots of info this week, if you stuck around to read it, awesome! Hope you found this all helpful! As always, please let me know down in the comments if you have any questions about this topic or this episode.
Also, if you are struggling with anything in particular, feel free to let me know and I will certainly consider dedicating an episode to that topic.
