I played this game so much back in the day on the 360. I remember the biggest controversy surrounding it was people not being able to read the text on their regular-ass TVs. Punk ass bitches. I also love how the town has a population of 53,000 people and there are probably way more than that at the mall alone. Must have had a sale that day.
That was an issue with most games from that period. The Xbox 360 was a transition console, transitioning to HD TV as a standard. It obviously took multiple years. I remember playing ffxiii and having a very hard time reading the text on screen for that particular reason.

Dead Rising was one of the games which really put the X360 on the map. Some people complained a lot about the difficulty but as you've pointed out it plays a lot more like a rogue-lite were you are SUPPOSED to die while retainin your earned levels. The only gripe I still have is that the text font they chose is super tiny and hard to read on anything less than a 50" screen.

I am intimidated by the real time timer and possibly missing survivors, which is why I prefer the mission-based gameplay of the Wii version (that and it saves some of the psychopaths, even if war vet is still in the game as a powerful mook). The janitor WILL tell you before a hostage or a psychopath activity will happen, right? And that there are no missable survivors or events (like events that the janitor will flat out not tell you to incentivize exploring when nothing is seemingly going on)?

This game suffers from the Pikmin syndrome: it gives you a very interesting world to play in but it forces you to rush in order to reach objectives. So you are constantly forced to run instead of experimenting. If the objectives were not timed, this game would be way better. The sandbox is left mostly intact because you are in a hurry constantly.
Yeah, I agree with this other user. The timer is needed to keep up the tension and the pacing. The time management is actually a big part of the fun factor in this game, and this is coming from someone who's not a fan of time limits in games. I think this might be the only game where I really feel like it's a good design choice. The game would get boring real quick without it, as was demonstrated by the free play mode without the timer in the sequel. You can try that mode if you just want to simply meander around an open environment full of zombies for eternity. But you can still experiment in the original, if you choose. Just don't save. Then you can take whatever knowledge you acquired with you when you get back to it for real, minding the timer.
I agree, it creates tension, but it should also incorporate some free roaming sections. It has so much stuff that go unnoticed due to constant time constraint.

In Portland Oregon where we have a Willamette River, Valley, and so on. We pronounce it Wi-lam-ette or Will-lam-it. Or Will-am-it. It makes sense when you live here. I wonder how other places interpret the non-english word
isn't it fucked up how horrible the "advanced" consoles (ps4,Xbox one) look worse and no detailed environments, items yet this was close to a launch title everything's just incredibly detailed compared to part 3 and 4?
This was one of the last truly hard and challenging games ever made. I loved rushing to save all the people and kill all the psychos. I would kill the clown and get the dial chainsaws. It was amazing. I miss old capcom so much. I cannot believe they let the ip die by giving it to western devs to make new games that lost the soul of the first .
I remember this game used to frustrate me like mad, but you’re right, don’t be put off by failure. You need to keep your stats and keep retrying, I need to give this another go
The predominant reason I finally caved in and bought a 360 was to play Halo 3. However, I was fully aware of Dead Rising and knew I had to own it. At a time where I was given Dead Rising, Army of 2, Kane & Lynch, & GTA IV (I bought Halo 3), I COULD NOT stop playing Dead Rising. Add to that I was playing on a tube tv and not HD, I couldn't read the recipes and was just messing around. A few months in, I finally bought an HD TV and it was as if a whole new world opened up as I could now read the recipes. Although it was limited to a mall and areas you'd find in a typical mall (with the exception to the ending I suppose), it still felt more like an open world/do anything game when compared to the likes of GTA IV. Just being able to pick up a bench and toss it at zombies, stuff like that made the possibilities seem endless. An unpopular opinion: despite 2 having coop and crafting weapons mechanic, I still prefer OG as it felt a little more grounded. I can't see myself going to a work bench to attach 2 chainsaws to a boat paddle to make a zombie killing weapon like 2, but I can see myself taking out a few zombies with a chainsaw, baseball bat, etc like in OG.
This game is so damn addicting - once you get to level 50, you become an absolute beast and it becomes even more fun to traverse Willamette Mall. FANNNNNTASTIC!!!
Hi Sega Lord X! You should do a review of the great shooter, Advanced Busterhawk Gleylancer. It was a Megadrive exclusive that came out in 1992 in Japan and has outstanding music, graphics, and an engaging anime storyline with a fair amount of customizable play options. Until about two weeks ago Gleylancer had never had a U.S. release, outside of running it on an emulator, but was released for Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and PS5. While not particularly hard it’s a great experience that so many in the U.S. missed out on that I think would be worth your time. Thanks for all you do and I love your channel!
Agree, Frank didn't have the helplessness of the characters from early Resident Evil games, even at level 1 he could take down several zombies with an improvised weapon before dying while in Resident Evil you were practically dead if you were out of ammo.
This and Gears of War were my first two Xbox 360 Games. Both weren’t released officially in Germany, all Dead Risings except part four shared that fate. And it was a pain to okay it on a CRT TV, I couldn‘t read any of the text on the screen, so I played this standing in front of the TV.
This game was a lot of fun, but man, escorting human survivors is a huge pain with their dumb AI. And I hate those convicts in the courtyard in the jeep.
The convicts are actually extremely easy as long as you have the right weapons. First thing I always do on my playthroughs is go to the gun store, defeat Cletus, and load up on sniper rifles and shotguns. The convicts each die from only 4-5 sniper shots, so you can easily defeat them on the first day.
The Wii version was the first one I played, but feeling ready to experience the game in its original form after beating the Wii version was why I got a 360. It felt like a totally new game. When I got an XBONE, the remaster of Dead Rising was the first game I bought for it because the game is so good and fun.
Nice video, I love this game and Dead rising 2 sort of. I was a little disappointed you didn't use Bored again by Lockjaw in the music demo section, that song was by my old guitar teacher's band.
The Dead Rising games, are the best zombie game series ever made. Hell i´ve even unlocked the 7 day survivor achievement, which means plaing 14 hours straight, while everybody is trying to kill you, and your health bar diminish, regardless if you were attacked or not. Awesome review Sega Lord X.
i definitely have to give this another shot. i felt restricted by the overarching timer but never knew you could restart with your levelled up stats another great review
The first time I saw Frank was in the Project X Zone game (Nintendo3DS), I still need to play Dead Rising, looks so much fun! But first I need to get a PS3 or Xbox360.
i actually enjoyed chop til you drop because it helped me enjoy the game in regards to completing missions as stages. on the original game, the time for missions was way too short no matter what level i was on , it felt unforgiving.
Dead Rising, in early development, started as a sequel to Shadow of Rome, so it somewhat shares some gameplay similarities as far as combat is concerned. Shadow of Rome sold so poorly that Inafune decided to turn the sequel into DR. The name "Frank West" for the protagonist was given by a man named David Crislip who worked for Capcom at the time.
Great choice X. One of my favorite Capcom and 360 games of all time.. Despite the flaws the characters and writing and in my opinion stage design were all better here than in Blue Castle/Capcom Vancouver's sequels. Ditching frank was a mistake and so was replacing his actor in part 4.
Great Video! This is a game I been waiting for a Switch port as it would be a shoe in and probably run great since it orginally came out on Xbox 360. Then I think about how devs love to put things on cloud gaming or port things poorly; which makes a steam deck more appealing.
I haven't played this one. The 7th Gen was really one of the greatest generations for quality releases, it's no wonder we are getting so many HD remastered games from that era and the 6th generation.
This made me go play it again. This time I was more patient, finally got ending A and the true ending. Even did zombie Genocider in prep for my Saint run. Thanks man!
Dead rising 2 on the ps3 was the only one I played so far -- 20 minutes then i turned it off. Literally everything I hate about games was in that one right from the first second : Long loading times, and many of them endless cut scenes easily killed friends carrying someone around for a mission, unable to fight the zombies timed missions / count down timers Fetch quests.. Maybe it gets better later, but I don't have the patience to find out. It would be like >insert game you like here< but the first 5 missions were underwater ones... aint nobody got time for that Ill keep a look out for the first one and give it a go
@2:38 Smallest 1200mm lens I have ever seen.... (I know that is a stupid detail but dude is waaaaaay to far away for the lens to see what it shows. The camera lens should be as big as his arm for that kind of reach in 2006... just sayn I mean maybe its a mirror lens but no...
Bought the x360 for this game. Then had to upgrade to a Hdtv cos the text was too small. Then had to buy a new tv stand cos the old one in my bedroom couldnt support it... a lot of investment in this game! Well worth it! One of the very few games I've replayed (back-to-back) to save all the survivors in one playthrough!
It's fascinating seeing someone explain what they love about the game being exactly the same things that put me off. I really wanted to like dead rising....but the mechanic of having to grind really annoyed me
I liked Dead Rising, sadly at the time it came out I was going through a bad patch in my life, a very bad patch and around same time I just got my first real "gaming" pc and internet so was playing MMO's so didn't get that far in (got to the scene where you have to kill some people in a truck) and lcd tvs back then were awful so the 720p graphics and framerate put me off. I know we have better versions now but i'm past the gaming every day portion of my life.
One of the best early games of the 360, it was a great show of what could do the 7th Generation of consoles, specially when it was compared with the Wii version (the one I played).
I completely agree here! DEAD RISING is a great game and a fantastic series over all. I especially like busting out the fourth game during Christmas! LOL!!!
Dead Rising was the first game I can recall making me think "wow, this really couldn't be done on the previous generation". A monumental game for sure.
This game is almost perfect. The only flaw is the survivors A.I., but it's great. Had a lot of fun in 2006 playing it on 360, trying to unlock achievementes, level up and discover all the secrets.
Loved the concept (and the movies of course) but my OG 360 load times and coming up against a gun toting boss while having no gun and being underpowered totally killed Dead Rising for me. Never went back to it - might just give it another chance in emulation - thanks for the video!
I never liked this game, but now I see it's because I was playing it completely wrong! I had no idea about the mechanic to level up when you die, I always just thought I'd have to start over from Level 1... I guess I need to give this one a shot again. Thanks SLX.
Dang, that sucks. Yeah you get pretty powerful and the game gets easier. Kind of like "well I failed this time but now I know what to do." Plus it's just fun slicing up zombies, especially once you get some weapons from the psychopaths.
This is the game that ushered me into the HDTV era. I bought the 360 and this game and no matter what I did, it would always just, end, and I could never figure out why. When I bought my first LCD TV I let a friend play it and he was breezing through it. I looked and noticed the fuzzy stuff at the bottom of the screen turned out to be important.....go figure.
I bought this game back on my 360 with the original release thinking it would definitely be one of my favorites for years to come. Who doesn’t love zombie games 😝 I did really enjoy everything about it except for the time system. I hated that lol! I just wanted to kill zombies and save people without worrying about the timed story aspect. Needless to say I traded the game in at GameStop or sold it or something I don’t remember. Anyway after watching this review it really makes me want to give it another shot. I now realize that the whole point of the game is to do everything in a timely manner. I didn’t realize back then that you keep all your experience and levels🤪 I was always just so disappointed when I got the game over and did not want to start all over🤬 I just thought I had to be missing something, and now I see what it was haha! May have to try and find it for my PS4 or Xbox series x(xbone version). Anyway I know I’m all over the place with my train of thought and just wanted to say thanks for the review and opening up my eyes to one of the cooler looking zombie games out there 😜👍 I’ll definitely keep my eyes peeled at my local game stores! Even a few mediocre games looked awesome. I would like to see Sega Lord X review The Order.
@Wiegraf Indeed. It's very hard to find a good, original game nowadays.
Good video. I love DR's visuals, they still hold up, vibrant & clear.
In Portland Oregon where we have a Willamette River, Valley, and so on. We pronounce it Wi-lam-ette or Will-lam-it. Or Will-am-it. It makes sense when you live here. I wonder how other places interpret the non-english word
@4:21 Everybody hop on the PP train. @4:31 PP boneus. PP everywhere
That huge PP bonus tho
isn't it fucked up how horrible the "advanced" consoles (ps4,Xbox one) look worse and no detailed environments, items yet this was close to a launch title everything's just incredibly detailed compared to part 3 and 4?
This was one of the last truly hard and challenging games ever made. I loved rushing to save all the people and kill all the psychos. I would kill the clown and get the dial chainsaws. It was amazing. I miss old capcom so much. I cannot believe they let the ip die by giving it to western devs to make new games that lost the soul of the first .
Absolutely love this game. It was the reason I got myself a Xbox 360 and it's still today one of my alltime favorite games.
It's funny you posted about this. I just rebought Dead Rising 3. Booted up my Series X and I got a good laugh. I forgot I had the Mega Man costume.
Nothing will compare to DR1. Driving back and forth for hours in order to unlock the real megabuster
Part 3 was pretty good tho, especially co-op
I honestly never considered Dead Risin a horror game :)
I love this game. I don't think you've lived until you've seen an emotive scene played out with your character wearing a lego helmet on his head lol
Close enough, but it’s Servbot from Megaman actually.
4:27 "huge pp"
this game was a GTA of the zombie world never seen so many zombies on the screen at once they broke the mold with this
Nice video, I love this game and Dead rising 2 sort of. I was a little disappointed you didn't use Bored again by Lockjaw in the music demo section, that song was by my old guitar teacher's band.
One of the greatest games ever made. Seriously Dead Rising 1 is a gamers game.
Dead Rising 2 Off The Record "Am I a joke to?"
@@matthatter56 Dead Rising 2 is great. 1 was the first to do it.
@@POWERUP88A Agreed.
My favourite game of all time. Great review. Thanks.
still have my;

I love the elevator music in the game
i definitely have to give this another shot. i felt restricted by the overarching timer but never knew you could restart with your levelled up stats
another great review
Wow you woulda really missed a unique experience when it came out.
It was really the first next gen game.
@@Wenjo936 i remember playing the 360 demo nonstop but yeah, time to give it another bash
@@seanpaul93 when you do, remember that the mannequin torso is the best weapon early on.
You can buff it with magazines to last longer too
The first time I saw Frank was in the Project X Zone game (Nintendo3DS), I still need to play Dead Rising, looks so much fun! But first I need to get a PS3 or Xbox360.
THIS game made me proud to be a 360 owner in 2006.... Not to mention it was a bargaining chipl to move in with a friend LMAO!
The first two games are truly classic games. I'm glad you covered this game.
Ah the day after Halloween. Show that spooky games are great all year round.
The Sega-produced Alien Isolation scared the hell out of me, and I loved every second of it. A grossly underrated classic.
only version I played was the abysmal wii version. Always wanted to try the OG, but never got a 360
Sega Lord X, *YOU DA MAN*
i actually enjoyed chop til you drop because it helped me enjoy the game in regards to completing missions as stages. on the original game, the time for missions was way too short no matter what level i was on , it felt unforgiving.
Dead rising also came to the Wii but altered and striped down to run on the resident evil 4 engine.
I couldnt get this working on Wii - I think it might need the old old, controllers?
Dead Rising, in early development, started as a sequel to Shadow of Rome, so it somewhat shares some gameplay similarities as far as combat is concerned. Shadow of Rome sold so poorly that Inafune decided to turn the sequel into DR. The name "Frank West" for the protagonist was given by a man named David Crislip who worked for Capcom at the time.
One of my absolute favourites! Thanks for showing DR some love.
Then I think about how devs love to put things on cloud gaming or port things poorly; which makes a steam deck more appealing.
i finally found the panzer dragon in the intro lol nice job
I haven't played this one. The 7th Gen was really one of the greatest generations for quality releases, it's no wonder we are getting so many HD remastered games from that era and the 6th generation.
This made me go play it again. This time I was more patient, finally got ending A and the true ending. Even did zombie Genocider in prep for my Saint run. Thanks man!
Keep up the great work my friend
Dead rising 2 on the ps3 was the only one I played so far -- 20 minutes then i turned it off. Literally everything I hate about games was in that one right from the first second :
Long loading times, and many of them
endless cut scenes
easily killed friends
carrying someone around for a mission, unable to fight the zombies
timed missions / count down timers
Fetch quests..
Maybe it gets better later, but I don't have the patience to find out. It would be like >insert game you like here< but the first 5 missions were underwater ones... aint nobody got time for that
Ill keep a look out for the first one and give it a go
@2:38 Smallest 1200mm lens I have ever seen....
This was the very first xbox 360 game I purchased, the real mega buster is always the first thing I go for when starting a new game.
I wish those in game 72 hours felt longer. I feel as if I don't have enough time to explore and I'm rushed. Anyway to make the hours feel longer?
Daaaaang
Dead Rising is awesome
I still play DR3 and DR1
One of the best early games of the 360, it was a great show of what could do the 7th Generation of consoles, specially when it was compared with the Wii version (the one I played).
Will be good to see you cover more 6th 7th gen console sega or other titles
I completely agree here! DEAD RISING is a great game and a fantastic series over all. I especially like busting out the fourth game during Christmas! LOL!!!
This game was mind blowing to me. It was the first of it's kind. A brand new experience for gamers.
Dead Rising was the first game I can recall making me think "wow, this really couldn't be done on the previous generation". A monumental game for sure.
@@paldinox1 I agree! Makes me want to buy it now lol
This game is almost perfect. The only flaw is the survivors A.I., but it's great. Had a lot of fun in 2006 playing it on 360, trying to unlock achievementes, level up and discover all the secrets.
I only played Off The Record, so far. I thought it was really cool but still need to give it a full playthrough. I want to play part 1 and 2 also.
So much nostalgia for early x360, more than ANY console
This is a very SEGA feeling game to me. Loved it on xbox 360 back in the day 😀
Loved the concept (and the movies of course) but my OG 360 load times and coming up against a gun toting boss while having no gun and being underpowered totally killed Dead Rising for me.
Again, great video, Sega Lord. My brother Alex used to play it a lot... Cheers 🍻🍻
Love this game, just absolutely hated the timer. Wish I had more time to explore and look around.
I remember buying this game and seeing jessie and not leaving my apartment for days lol. Good times my early 20's.
Good times on the 360, this was one of my favorites
Terrific game, got me through 1st semester of my 1L year back in 06. Unique experience (well, until the carbon-copy sequel).
I recognize this. This took place in Seattle last summer right? Or was that Baltimore? 🤔
Lol “let me stop in the middle of mowing down zombies to try on a new hat. Hmm… hmmm..”
Nice review!
I had a wii when this game came out… let me just say china was a different beast then. When i downloaded this on my xbox i was amazed on how much content there was compared to the wii version! Still wii version was fun
I hope you review Valkyria Chronicles.
Talk about classics... Great game!
@@de-smikkelbeer not since the mass effect trilogy have I been so invested in a colorful cast of characters. I recently played VC for switch and fell in love with it.
