🎄 The post office worker at 33:24 who gets the idea to send all those bags of letters to the courthouse is Jack Albertson, who, a quarter of a century later, would go on to play Charlie's grandfather in "Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory." 😉👍

Do I believe in Santa? You bet I do. When I was in high school, my cousin and I worked in the Santa booth at the local mall. One evening, Santa called in sick, so we needed someone to fill in. After calling all of our friends, to no avail, I called my daddy. I asked him to check at his bank office for some underpaid teller who wanted some extra cash. Within the hour, my daddy suited up and became one of the best Santas the mall had ever seen. He stayed with us through the season. Even after I left home, he continued to play Santa in the mall, moving to the larger mall, across town. Mom made him a beautiful velvet Santa suit and she made herself a Mrs. Claus outfit. Until the year before he died, my daddy played Santa for church, the Lion's Club, Rotary Club, and for friends and family. When someone asks if I believe in Santa, I say of course, he's my Daddy. I have an ornament on my tree that is a picture of my first born, at 9 months (his first Christmas), sitting on Santa's lap. The Santa is my Dad (his Paw Paw). Now I tell my grandchildren that Santa was their great granddad.

I'm so glad that I found your channel. I love movies from the Golden Age, and one of my favorite James Stewart movies is "Harvey." It's a comedy about a man named Elwood P Dowd (played by Mr Stewart), whose best friend is a 6 foot 3 and 1/2 inch tall invisible rabbit named Harvey. I hope that you might consider reacting to it in a future video.

Maureen O'Hara almost didn't make this movie. She had spent four years during World War II unable to leave the US because she was and Irish national and some Irish were helping the Nazis, Germany being anti-British. When the war ended and the restriction was lifted she immediately went back to Ireland to see her family but the script for MIRACLE was ready and her boss Darryl Zanuck ordered her back whereupon she blew her top and was going to tell Zanuck off and quit movies. Her agent, Lew Wasserman, intercepted her and asked her as a personal favor to read the script. She read it, fell in love with it and you know the rest!

Most people today miss the meaning of the title. At the time, the two biggest department store chains, Macy's and Gimbels, had their flagship store and main office on 34th St. in NYC, a block away. And the rivalry was legendary. There was a popular saying at the time "Would Macy's tell Gimbels?" So when Kris brings the two CEO's together for a publicity photo and they shake hands - many considered THAT the miracle.
(When they made the remake, Gimbels had gone out of business and Macy's this time did not give them permission to use their name in the movie.)
    ----
For years of watching this movie, I always assumed that "Mr. Macy" was really played by the actual guy, as his acting seems a bit stilted. No, the founder had died a century earlier and the chain had long be sold to outside interests.

Gimbels is not still around. There used to be a saying which meant "why would I tell a competitor?" which was "Does Macys tell Gimbels?"
I'll leave you with the comment that the 1951 version of "A Christmas Carol," starring Alastair Sim (sometimes released as "Scrooge") is by far the best version.

If you have not seen it, the ULTIMATE Christmas movie is what I consider to be the greatest movie ever made ... IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE. The Frank Capra masterpiece starring Jimmy Stewart, on his return from WWII. Another couple to put on your list from Capra is "It Happened One Night" and "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington." Loving your enjoyment of the great movies from the past. None of today's filmmakers seem to have studied any of them. Thanks so much!

There's an interesting bit of footage on YT of a 1970 interview with Canadian director Don Shebib (Goin' Down the Road). In it he says he was greatly influenced by a little known Frank Capra movie "It's a Wonderful Life" What people don't remember is that in 1970 it was little known. After it's initial run it would have likely fallen by the wayside. Its copyright expired in 1974 following a lack of renewal and it entered the public domain, allowing it to be broadcast without licensing or royalty fees, at which point it became a Christmas classic.

Santa - "Of course, tell me what you'd like." Girl - "Nothing! I already have everything. I just want to stay with this lovely lady." Santa - "Would you like to sing for me?" I grew up in New York and spent more than a little time (and more than a little money) in Macy's on 34th Street. Less so at Gimble's, but I do remember both fondly. As for the movie, a story I remember reading is that Edmund Gwenn was invited to play Santa Claus in the 1946 parade. The footage of him in the movie was the real thing from that parade.

  • @johannesvalterdivizzini1523

When they were filming this, (1946) they shot it at the actual Macy's Thanksgiving parade, and they got Edmund Gwenn to ride in the Santa's Sleigh float as that years' Santa. Kind of a real New York story. As for "Susie" she was played by young (remarkably talented) Natalie Wood--who grew up to be one of the most attractive Hollywood stars (like as Maria in West Side Story and Judy in Rebel Without a Cause). BTW...that house they stopped at on Long Island still stands.

I don't know if anyone translated for the Dutch girl, but I watched another reaction of someone who spoke Dutch and did a real time translation. I don't remember the exact words, but it was something like ...
Santa: What do you want for Christmas?
    Girl: I don't want anything.
    Santa: Nothing?
Girl: I already got what I wanted when I got to live with this kind lady.
The body language helps if you don't know the words, but knowing makes the scene even sweeter.

If you're going to do romance movies for Valentines Day, I'll put in a plug for "The Ghost and Mrs Muir" (1947). It stars another lovely brunette Gene Tierney as Mrs. Muir and Rex Harrison as the Captain. Like in Miracle a young Natalie Wood also has a role.
The reason a Dutch girl was used in this 1947 film is because of the notoriety of the German bombing of Rotterdam in 1940. It was considered despicable because the Germans seemed to directly target civilians. There were a large group of Dutch orphans who later were adopted in the USA, like the little girl in the film.

(warning, it takes Hope about 15 minutes of film time to get out of sunny Florida and up to the snows of New York City, but that is how the story goes) The song "Silver Bells" was introduced to the world in this film, sung by actress Marilyn Maxwell. Swindler goes on the run to escape his debts and his chasers but ultimately catches the Christmas spirit.

You can't fool kids all of the time, they scrutinize Santas like I did myself. Movies like this made me the Santa I am. You must not drop the magic for a moment or you have lost them. There was a old B&W television show called Amous & Andy with an all star black cast I used to watch all of the time. A holiday episode found the cast unable to get a Santa to come to their part of the city for the kids there. So they hit on one of the guys who was a much larger individual than the rest and talked him into doing Santa. Now this was the first time I even imagine ever seeing a Black Santa so I was a little kid skeptical. He was an excellent Santa and all the kids thought nothing of his 'color change.' One of many things (including this film) that made me want to put on the suit.

Try "The Bishop's Wife" before Christmas. Try "Harvey" any time you are feeling down and need a lift. Good reaction to this one.

I subscribed after your first video, but I must be honest now. You need to talk less. It's not necessary to comment or mug for the camera every five seconds. It disrupts the rhythm of the dialogue.
