The Porsche 928 was meant to replace the 911, but instead, it was sold alongside it as the grand touring choice. This particular 928S is a 1983 model with 428,600 miles! As you'll find out in our review, the V8 coupe paired with a five-speed is sportier than expected.

I've had my 5 speed 1986 Porsche 928S for 25 years and it's always fun to drive and shift! For anyone who has never driven one - you are missing out! The comfort, handling, and excitement have to be felt in person!
I strongly agree with you, I have the same 5 speed 1986. My favorite is the acceleration entering a highway.

This 928 is really good looking.... stil. very classy ...and its a 3 pedal type. Nice!
I have a 1981 manual. Not the “sought after” year, but p/o maintained it well and was a decent buy 15+ years ago; told me he regretted selling. Best of all, that V8 does sound great. Not “fast”, but it pulls hard. Yes, they can be costly to maintain if left to sit, but generally not too bad if driven (and maintained) regularly. Also, as you pointed out, you don’t see them that often so it’s nice to have the only one at a C&C.
That V8 sounds so good, I would love a 928 one day!
And that is with the stock exhaust....
I drove one of these for over 19 years, worked on it myself for the most part. The car is very physical to drive; The steering is heavy, the clutch was heavy, the shifter was heavy. Driving it fast on a course would tend to wear you out quicker than Porsche's later cars like the 981 Cayman. Daily? I did it, it didn't bother me at all. And yes, they drank a lot of fuel, though 23 mpg on the highway really isn't THAT bad. They are quite comfortable on the highway, with some of the best seats I've ever sat in.
As to maintenance, the timing belt has to be done and done right. Most of the 928's problems revolved around stupid accessories, the drivetrain was pretty much bulletproof.
The only reason I sold mine was that I was tired of it and simply wanted something else for a while, a '14 Cayman S. I didn't have garage space for both.

The 83 Eurospec manual would be a better example to test. Not the detuned American engine.
Both mine are Euros. Had a US ‘85 5sp and I must admit I loved that motor as well

Ive had my guards red 84 928s since 2015. 78k miles and all original still even has the blaupunkt cassette deck. Amazing that a car 40 years old still looks modern and at the same time like nothing else on the road. Get thumbs up whenever i drive it. Steering is heavy you get good road feel drinks gas like its going out of style. Very rare to see a 928 on the road these days. Great review from you and you covered the essence of the car very well!

Incredible condition for the mileage. I own a 1983 black on black 5 speed 928 S with BBS wheels. It has 156,000 miles. It still turns heads and wins awards at car shows. I also have a battery disconnect for it which is a must for storage .I had it supercharged with a Stage 1 kit from 928 Motorsports in Wisconsin. I also had to get an updated high performance alternator from them as the original was totally inadequate. the leather interior still looks good. It now has plenty of power ..very tight high speed grand tourer !....Oh , I want to add that I just start it rolling in first and then engage 2nd gear as it is a little tricky...then it accelerates like crazy.

I had a guards red, 1990 928 GT manual 5-speed. 5.0 liter, 32 valve V-8. Rear wheel steering from the 959. Uni-directional tire treads, smaller tires in front than back (stock spec) meant each corner had a specific tire fitted. Traction control with half-shaft electrically controlled clutches, not brakes. You could floor it in the rain and the traction control and computer kept it pointed straight ahead. You could feel the torque being moved left/right as you accelerated. It was definitely great fun.
The air filter is installed upside down. ;). Awesome review. 400k is not common, but it’s not impossible for these cars. Maintenance is not that bad if you do your own work. The community is amazing. Once sorted it a great and reliable (as an 80’s car can be)…great for road trips.
HALF A MILLION MILE PORSCHE. Amazing! Still probably over $100,000....
I thought the 83 928S had around 320bhp, well at least that’s what the Euro version had.
As always, the US got the severely detuned lower compression version.

The 5 speed manual is the perfect match for the 928 & transforms it into a true GT tourer.
still find it weird that they gave it such a HEAVY throttle peddle, it's like you are trying to compress a brick heavy steering I can deal with.
There was another 928 with 600K miles mentioned on one of the forums. The engine cylinder liners are Alusil for better longevity. Mine is a1986 manual with 288hp with close to 200K miles.
With 430k miles that’s impressive im guessing in 2024 it may have close to 500k miles
350k more miles to enjoy my 1994 GTS before reaching this epic mileage !
I've thought about picking up a 928 one of these days but it's the cost to maintain them that keeps me away.

The early models had a cleaner style to my eye.
Like a 450SL having an automatic works well.
I would love to own this car! This was the one I had plastered on my bedroom walls as a kid in high school. Right next to the gray market Mercedes 380SEC of the same year, as cars i would own someday...
Is all 16v non interference engine or just the 4.5l?
I've read that the 4.7l is an interference engine.
Need to drive it for an hour at 140MPH and then tell us what you think.
The 4.7 is an interference motor..... the 4.5 is the only non interference engine .

Good to see the radiator replaced. My original radiator at 33 years ruptured the transmission oil heat exchanger, filling the 4sp auto with radiator water and the engine coolant with trans oil. Very expensive. Anyone with a 80's 928 that still has an original radiator should change it, mine was working perfectly until it wasn't.
