In wood finishing to fill the pores of an open grain wood like oak after applying the filler I will wrap a clean rag around on old credit card and while holding it at an angle wipe off the surface while leaving the filler in the pores. Have you tried this with your painting?

Color filling your engraving can be as simple as a paint by number. You can definitely do this!
