The slow rhythm of your videos is so enjoyable compared to all the fast-pace content that is flooding TH-cam, instagram and tiktok now. You take your time so we take our time to really be absorbed by your stories and your awesome photographs. It’s as human and down to earth as it can be. cheers from France
I love when you share your screw-ups with us! I know how often I have done something like this, or far worse, and felt defeated that I could make a mistake that would cost me the images I was hoping to get. It actually helps to know that someone with your extreme level of talent and expertise is still as human as me and we can all have our stumbles! Love the image, love the adventure, love the humanity you bring to every shared experience! Please keep sharing!
Your recent big budget travel videos have been very cool, but I really missed these road trips in the van with your unique behind-the-scenes perspective.
I know you felt the trip was a bust and you seemed very disappointed in yourself. But I think you allowed us a glimpse into a situation all of us have found ourselves in both in photography or our lives in general. The fact that you pushed on and still came out with a very very usable shot shows how your experience took over in the face of stress. I mean the tree frames the sun well, you really pulled up some details in the shadows of the hills, and the outer branches contrast nicely with the sky. Not a fail from where I'm standing. Great job making a win out of it!!!
Did Gavin want to know how he could chase your awe? Only you could turn around a 'gavastrophy' haha. ( he probably only wanted to boast about the Hassa he's borrowed!). Keep up the great work Mr 'H', we all admire the work you do.
Great to see you not promoting Nikon. Great Camera system, love mine. Keep up with your adventure. You have become a great photographer, one worth watching. Poor Gavin, he's that kind of friend. One that you really enjoy, in small bites. He is high energy!
That’s really true, whenever I go out to shoot the landscape it always turns out to be an adventure. Even in my darkest moods. And it’s your videos teaching me that over the past 5 five years. So, thank you soo much for that!
Excellent update and we all have days like that. A few years ago, back in the 35mm days, I was out with someone and only did he discover that the film failed some days after. More updates please. 👍👏
I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who screws the pooch. Thanks for sharing this with us. What counts is the journey and the lessons learned along the way.
Easy mistake to make with the guidebook, though both are lovely locations. Plus another reason to go to the Dales over the Lakes at this time of year is that the number of visitors makes it feel like a theme park. As to the morning session, no joy in the morning but you did get to scout it, so at least now you have a flavour of the area. Gavin's going to have a field day with this I expect.
I love it. I don't know how many times i've screwed up something and was really upset about myself or the weather or whatever - and it's great to see, i'm not alone. Also the comments made me laugh out loud, it's very refreshing.
I share the sentiment of many. It is great to see when things don't go your way. There is still no better place to be than out doing what you love. Thanks Thomas for giving us a glimpse of your world. Also, I dig the shot of the tree at the last light of the evening.
One thing you did get right was the colour of your camera bag👍 I’ve been in that area, left my camera bag and worked my way along a pavement with tripod and camera “comping”, then looked back wondering where my mid grey camera bag might be…….🙄 took a fair bit of searching.
It’s a perfect example of photography. Spending hours and days walking and not bagging any shots whatsoever but if you went out and captured millions of perfect shots it would end up passionless so it’s all part of photography. The main part is the experience yo
Awesome Video! I do love to see that I am not the only one struggeling with conditions and to less knowlegde about the area. Always fun watching you! Best wishes!
Another great video. It's not just landscape photographers that have to deal with issues, even street photography has it's ups and downs and unsuccessful trips
Thanks Tom, What a great video. I was going to say that your error of the previous night was a blessing in disguise but you beat me to it. Despite the rush, you ended up with a gem of a photograph, beautifully processed with real empathy for the scene. Up until about two years ago, every time I went out, I was always determined to come back with something and more often than not, set myself up for disappointment. Now I often go out with no particular plan and zero expectations and I always come away fulfilled, even if I haven't taken my camera out of the bag, or have photographed a total dud, or a few total duds. I never come home disappointed and always return grateful for a few hours of walking and engaging with nature. Sometimes, the only plan I have maybe just a location, or some part of a location, but then when I get there, depending on conditions and/or my mood, I don't always stick to the script. It's usually on occasions like this that I happen on something I had not expected and am rewarded, but not always. It happens to me often enough to make me keep going out with the camera, but maybe no more than one in every five outings. It's enough for me. To that end, I want to thank you for highlighting the work of Simon Booth two years ago. His work has inspired me to slow down and not just look for the big vistas and epic fire skies, but to look for and observe smaller things that I might normally have not noticed and walked straight past. It's been nice to see you do more from the Yorkshire Dales. I've not really seen the dales since 1980 and then it was on a bike and not stopping for landscape photography, so I need to get back there sometime on a visit back to England. It seems to me that so many photographers overlook the Dales and are drawn straight to the Lake District. I can understand why, but it seems like there is much to be found, or refound in the Dales. I think Dartmoor, with its granite lichen-covered tors, also offers a good relief from the green of summer.
Great presentation of your experience! In spite of your frustration, I loved the sunset image! Great light can make up for many things! Thanks for taking me along!
What a shame, that is so typical of landscape photography. How many times have I been panicking, trying to set my tripod up before the light disappears.
Flippin' heck, as you're fond of saying...don't denigrate the one shot you got! I personally think that's one of the best of yours I've seen. Not minimalist, but superbly balanced and with superb color.
We've all done it Tom..... but you were only a 10 mins drive away from where you parked up 🙂 Also when your next at Southerscales check out Great Douk Cave signposted on your left as you head onto Southerscales, only a 10 min walk 🙂
I've been following this channel for sometime, and I realized I've never asked this question: on location, how do you deal with color balance? As you evaluate the changing temperature of the light, vegetation in various shades of green, refracting rain drops light, sky and clouds -- how do you do it? Is it a question of getting it right as you are shooting (somehow!), or fixing it in post. Love your work AND the cinematography which is heaps better than just a short time ago. The camera POV puts us right "in the middle" of your story. Thanks!
the one image is a great one, and as Old Lodge Skins, the blind Indian in the movie Dances With Wolves says; "sometimes the magic works and sometimes it doesn't"
At the beginning of the video, i thought , yep travelled that road before. usually i stop at ingleton and take a walk around the falls (always quite fun when you hear the sirens sounds and the earth shudders shortly afterwards, as the Quarry is next door). i was a little further over from where you were just about a month back, love the yorkshire dales
As soon as I saw where you'd parked, just above ingleton, I knew you'd blown Southerscales 😂 You're right, it's a much better location in winter and really suits quite grimy conditions too, a really good black and white location.
Nice video tom it is refreshing to see that we dont always get the photos we hope for.we can always learn from our mistakes and it is nice to see a professional admiting to the kind of mistakes we all make.thanks for the excellent content as ever Regards David
Love your style of content creation. It's always refreshing...even when it's gear talk. However, these outing stories are the bee's knees for me. Cheers!
Worth every step and frustration to find that lone tree at sunset. A stunning composition with gorgeous light on the foreground and edge of the branches Tom.
Thanks for this one Tom - gonna be showing this to my partner who can't understand that I can head off somewhere, be gone all day and come back with nothing to edit .......😏
A while ago you were pondering deep and meaningful questions about photography and art and where you sit. I have been told that my photography is art. If your photography or mine is art, that gives great freedom to rearrange the furniture in our creations. if you "felt" that sunset was more intense than the camera suggests, if it's art, you can change that. If those waves seemed bigger, enlarge them. We can even do outright fiction. I collect guide books. I never use them. If somebody else has photographed it, I probably don't want to.
I loved that picture with the tree, I thought it looked great. And has for the wrong location well I have no sense of direction at all, so I would have been no help, thank you much for sharing.
The many joys of landscape photography Pal !! That Hardcastle fella owes you a few beers for messing up your direction skills :-) Great use of the 360 in the van too Pal 👏
I was editing my recent photos from Southerscales when I had a break to watch your video! Perfect timing and sorry, very amusing! It's a nature reserve because of the rare plants that grow in the cracks of the limestone pavement. Most of the pavement is chaotic but I was lucky to find a small section on the northern edge that is flat, fairly clear and beautifully patterned. Impressed by the way you planned for the weather and sunset, I still simply turn up and go hunting for compositions - need to try harder!
I don't know Thomas. I feel like mistakes like this are actually more fun. You ended up somewhere completely different than you expected. You got a shot and and tomorrow, you will go to the right place. I think it was all worth it!
You can't keep away Thomas but we understand why - the Yorkshire Dales is the best area 😉That is a challenging photography location - we agree, we've tried taking photographs there too 😬Still lots of locations to explore though! 📸
Great Video, sometimes the weather just doesn't cooperate! we have had weeks and weeks of that sort of weather in the southern hemisphere, such is global warming! thanks for sharing
Since I am new to photography I have not gone thru your experience just yet but, as an avid mountain biker though, I suffered many times of the same mistake which in those cases cost me hours of climbing the wrong trail. However perseverance and tools, in my case a GPS and the use of tools like Hiking/MTB project, GAIA and others, on my phone and GPS have allowed me to get lost less often. Every experience is successful, even the ones we think went wrong or not according to plan, you've got a great picture which had you followed the initial plan wouldn't have, so I would personally call it a win, great story.
I like seeing you stuff-up now and again and an insight into the real side of being a landscape photographer! It’s never plain sailing in real life and to see you rushing around as the light was about to go felt very familiar to me 😂😅😂
Hey Thom it's so weird. I keep calling you but it just rings and rings. Must have called while you were driving, yes that must be it.

It’s reassuring to know other people also have days like this 😂
I feel like I have these days a lot. I'm generally quite bad a paying attention 😕
24 minutes to watch just one image... Still, I enjoyed it, because you are real. You do not pretend. Thanks a lot for your work.
I love when you share your screw-ups with us!

Wednesdays are always a good day - with mr heaton

Love a traditional Heaton video!
Thanks for sharing. The sound of the rain in the van while making tea is my ASMR.
The final image turned out to be great so i would call this a happy end with a successful result.
I love that you didn't edit out your mistake. I think Gavin had a hand in the rain as well.
Did Gavin want to know how he could chase your awe? Only you could turn around a 'gavastrophy' haha. ( he probably only wanted to boast about the Hassa he's borrowed!). Keep up the great work Mr 'H', we all admire the work you do.

It's not an adventure until something goes wrong.
Saving this episode for tonight after work. Thomas goes well with a glass of bourbon🥃
Enjoy! I might get a glass myself.
Excellent update and we all have days like that. A few years ago, back in the 35mm days, I was out with someone and only did he discover that the film failed some days after. More updates please. 👍👏
You could always block all calls from the Crustcastle…
Glad to see you out and about again, it’s been really interesting weather recently. 😎
Stormchasing is awesome. I would enjoy myself a lot there with those thunderstorms.
The skies where awesome past few days. I love it when it's stormy
I was tempted to try and shoot the lightning, but I was well out of my depth.

As soon as you made “that face” I knew it was Gavin… 😂😂😂hilarious!!!
To say that you made the best of the situation is an understatement - what a gorgeous shot! 👍
Thank you for your encouraging words, Thomas. It helps to know how to set expectations to hear you explain your perspective... much appreciated.
A lovely image. Also, yay for no gear talk!

Very “real life” experience that we’ve all experienced. At least it ended with one great image. Thanks for taking me along!
Glad you’re human! And yes, it’s on Gavin’s head!!!
Great adventure, out in bad weather in the van. Spot on
Looked like a beautiful day. It's great to see you out and about again!
I have paused the presentation, at 24:10, to say that your accidental/incidental image, hurriedly shot, is most lovely. Serendipity.
One thing you did get right was the colour of your camera bag👍 I’ve been in that area, left my camera bag and worked my way along a pavement with tripod and camera “comping”, then looked back wondering where my mid grey camera bag might be…….🙄 took a fair bit of searching.

I like how I can always guess who's calling you without looking.
It’s amazing how much you can do with so little time. And that’s a single exposure too. Nailed it 🎉

Good on you for not answering that call! He probably would have talked, incessantly, about his book. And now he's yammering about a second one. 🤦

I always get a photo. I am on the lookout for a landscape, wildlife or macro shot. I never was a one genre shooter.
Wonderful REAL video, Tom. Call Gavin back!
You came back with one very good image. That is successful in my book.
Glad to see you back out having adventures- I think we all like that best!
What a shame, that is so typical of landscape photography. How many times have I been panicking, trying to set my tripod up before the light disappears.

Super cool photo, definitely pulled it off in the hype of the moment. Well done
Ooh! New TH video 15 minutes before an important meeting??? Guess I'll make time!
Great video, may have messed up but still come away with a decent photo.

When Gavin calls you know it's gonna be interesting xD
Don't you just love it when a plan comes together?! 😃Great stuff again, Tom!!
That was a wonderful shot, better than I could have made, lol
Poor Gavin. He gets some stick. I don't remember seeing him turn up at completely the wrong location in any of his videos though 😉
"It was all Gavins fault.." ;-)
So mean to poor Gavin! 😂 at least Gavin was smart enough to check the awesome landscapes in New York State!
@bmuses6092 Yeah, looking forward to seeing more of NY state in his next video. He and Thomas are my favourite TH-camrs.
@@GrahamAldrich1975 I hope we see more of NYS! Thomas is magical with a camera…and Gavin makes you smile!
