I've just got Thinkpad P1 gen2. I7 9850, Nvidia q2000 4gb, 16 + 16gb (additional) ram, 512 SSD + 1tb (additional), full HD Dolby vision 500 nits. It's a perfect device!!! Weight is very low, good battery, very powerful! With back to school deal I got it for $1754 before taxes (not including additional ram and SSD, which is +$65 for ram + about $100-150 for 1tb SSD).

I use a P40 Yoga for my own stuff, and although it's getting on a bit, will cope pretty well with general graphic design and video editing. Recently given a P53 for work, and it's obviously faster for video editing, it doesn't have a Lenovo OneLink+ port! I guess that idea was short lived. Would like to see a P43 Yoga with a decent Quadro GPU, 100% sRGB, Wacom digitiser and Thunderbolt USB-C connection to keep up.

Great review. Always a pleasure. A few comments. I do not think that 76% Adobe RGB is considered good enough for graphics professionals, it means you cannot trust video color grading or anything you do for print. You would expect closer to 100% which quite a few screens has. Also I read on a few other places on internet that some users only got 3-4 hours of battery life which is a big worrying. They had the 4k monitor however, so possibly that is the reason. Once again thanks for a great review.

I was looking for a new Laptop. Already got an Acer I7, old but still good, a Surface 3 Pro I5 not too old and is perfect. For work, I use a Dell Latitude 5590 I5, which is very good also. I love Microsoft's new Laptop 3 and watched your review, perfect looking laptop very portable, powerful. Still, for the same price, I got on the Thinkpad 53s a more excellent computer, little heavy if we compare portability. I had configured the 53s I7, 16GB RAM, 512GB SDD, 4K display, NVIDIA P520 2GB,720HD camera with Ir, NFC, Fingerprint reader, all the goodies, and upgraded the warranty for $1850.00 with taxes, shipping free. And it could be easily updated with more memory. I love Microsoft, but I sacrificed the portability for the power the Thinkpad offers; they cannot math that. Anyway, one pound more average does not make a difference. The Surface Laptop 3 cost almost the same price at my military discount. Lenovo offered at a discount plus the military discount too. Thanks for your review!

@@CruisnChris 3800 before taxes, i got it with only 1 stick of 32 GB of DDR4 ECC for Memory which will be fine for now and can upgrade to 128 when i want, but i wanted to make sure the 32GB was maxed out per stick and ECC for the work i will be doing and only 1 stick of 512 GB of SSD M2 for Memory, going to upgrade to the 6 tb myself, otherwise this thing would have run close to 7k. I've had this laptop for half a year with the top end xenon + quadro rtx5000, + oled touch and I'm beyond disappointed.
The screen is horrible, the touch layer has a mesh that is clearly visible in front of anything you view (saying its not noticable is bs), the colors distort to to blue and red with the slightest viewing angle, even visible from head on, and most importantly, the screen looks like it has a crappy uneven backlighting even if its OLED. If your screen is not full white or full black, the brightness or value of grey will be inconsistent and have clear horizontal and vertical lines. HDR Causes issues with Windows10 and doesn't play back properly if you have multiple displays connected to your laptop.
Lenovo software caused throttling which made the GPU get less than a quarter of the score of a laptop gtx 1060 in Unigine benchmarks. I had to manually test out all possible drivers from nvidia to find ones, not recommended by Lenovo, that were able to bypass the throttling software.
The laptop froze once a day if I was afk long enough for it to go to sleep, it would not wake up no matter what and it had to always be hard restarted. I had to disable sleep completely, and even then, the workstation dock causes similar freezes once or twice in a few weeks due to bad drivers and software.
On top of all of this, the thing gets absolutely sizzling hot under NO LOAD AT ALL, and has already bent the chassis so that only three of the four feet touch the table surface.
There have been loads of refunds going in for the P53 and its taken Lenovo many months to refund any of the Laptops, nor do they address or admit any of these COMMON issues with the P53. There was a huge thread on the Lenovo user forums about the issues and refunds but some of the issue threads have even been removed.

Nice perspective, thank you. I came to this review because I'm considering a P53. I'm replacing a secondhand 2014 MacBook Pro Retina that de-soldered itself, as I've subsequently learned they're prone to do. I'll research those issues you've mentioned.
I'm using my secondhand T420 now. I replaced the optical drive with an SSD and boot into Debian Linux. If the machine didn't suck for photo editing (slow USB; slow processing; and poor color gamut, ~36% AdobeRGB after calibration) I'd never have bought the MacBook.

I don't see issue with price at all, A surface for example with inferior specs can go up to 3500$+ while you can get superior specs with this laptop for around $2100. Lenovo gives one of the most insane discounts out there. Lenovo Thinkpad probably the cheapest and most bang for laptop in the market.

Surface products look and feel good, but have poor durability (they are known to fail just after warranty expires) and sadly they are not repairable - More glue than screws and everything is soldered in, so try to get the best warranty possible.

Happy to have a beast of a laptop that is going to last me 5 years at least. If you research lithium batteries the fully charged voltage is a major factor in the longevity of batteries. This should easily last 5 years now that it is rarely cycling and isn't being held above 75% charge.

  • @yphong1986

I strongly dislike the keyboard.. they have switched the position between Fn and Ctrl button on the keyboard... it means that the key on the left bottom corner of the keyboard is not Ctrl but is Fn key.. I have many computers and I have changed many computers in the past 20 years and this is the first time I found Ctrl key not at the left bottom corner.. it caused me a lots of trouble as Ctrl is always used in shortcut key and I have to always remind myself to adjust the hand gesture because it is different with all other keyboards... I wonder why Lenovo make this changes? Maybe they expect people will says... Wow!! This is so creative, Lenovo is different from others!!
