  • Lisa Gade reviews the Lenovo ThinkPad P53, a 15.6” mobile workstation that’s extremely powerful and upgradable. The laptop is available with Intel 9th gen Core i5, i7 and i9 processors and the Intel Xeon 8-core E-2276M CPU. It ships with NVIDIA Quadro graphics, at the low end the T1000/T2000 and at the upper end there’s the Quadro RTX 3000, RTX 4000 Max-Q and RTX 5000 Max-Q with 16GB DDR6 VRAM. It’s currently the only 15” mobile workstation with the Quadro RTX 5000, which is the model we have for review. The ThinkPad is available with full HD and 4K UHD displays, including a 4K OLED option. The P53 is designed for 2D and 3D CAD, modeling, architecture and 3D rendering.

Beautiful! I am a Dell guy but I just can't help myself with the Thinkpad. This looks to be one heck of a beast. Lovely expandablity and boy do I love that.

R.a. Wheeler I have had Dell laptops for the past 20 years. But the Dell Precision laptop (5510) runs too hot due to its slim chassis. Thermals are bad and even with the latest 15” model, it hasn’t really improved. Also drivers are bad and I have lots of issues with the Dell Docks (D3100, WD15 and TB15/TB16). My next laptop will probably be a Lenovo in this series. The only drawback is the numpad that causes the keyboard to be asymmetric.

    • @PearComputingDevices

@@RamonDeKlein I love the XPS line, but for some reason Dell has really cheaped out the cooling on them. I have a Latitude 5491 with a 6 core and Nvidia graphics. The thing is a 14 inch beast. But like the XPS 15 it throttles. Even after using new paste and shims. It's still better than a Macbook pro, but it's not what it could be. Especially if I am using my TB16 thunderbolt dock. For whatever reason them two don't seem to play well together. The fans will just blast away. It's a little heater. I don't think it's strictly Dell. It's this push for thinner and lighter laptops. But when your sticking that kind of hardware in there... I mean it's still a 14mn cpu. These things produce a lot of heat under stress. For my $2100 bucks I expected better. I was only $400 or so off from moving up to a precision 7530. I probably should have pulled the trigger in retrospect. But I really wanted to keep with a 14 inch footprint. My 5470 before it never had these problems at all, but to be fair that was only a quad core with Radeon graphics and it didn't have thunderbolt. I used the traditional doc with it.

I'm about to return my really hot P1 Gen 2 for the P53. What I'm really hesitant about is a dock. Lenovo recommends the 40AN0170US but reviews on it and the 230 W dock are atrocious. I have never worried about a dock until these external blocks. My HP ZBook connected via a Thunderbolt G2 dock and I never knew if 1, 2, or none of my displays would work or how to bring them back consistently if I did lose them. I'd also lose the audio. Lisa - you have any recommendations? Could I use a non-Lenovo dock?

Make jokes all you want. At least these are upgradable and fixable. The thin notebooks might look nice, but if anything goes wrong it's trash. If you can even open it without destroying it, you'll find everything soldered on and not replaceable. I have given up on the thin, pretty models. It's off- lease Lenovos from here on in. I'll probably get one of these in about 5 years and it will still have 5-10 years of useful life.

The only real drawbacks I can find are the sound (which isn't bad by any means) and the weight (which can be overlooked after you adjust). I have a P50 and still love it - it has been a real workhorse, easily equivalent to my original IBM ThinkPads. People talk about how Lenovo's ThinkPads aren't as good, but you get what you pay for - the high-end ThinkPads are as good as they ever were (and no less expensive). My only disappointment with the P50 is that the 4K screen, while amazing in every other way, was never all that bright and has gotten even dimmer over the years. But it seems like that's fixed in the newer models.

Time will tell...especially on the OLED touch screens, many bad feedback about them so far. I'll stick on the "classic" FHD IPS for the moment, as they are time-tested technology. But you're right about brightness improvements, we can now comfortably use those new laptops under sunlight :)

Had this for a year now, use the autodesk suite as well as Archicad. I've found it manages heat very well, fans are very quiet, occasionally kicking up if I'm rendering or doing some heavy duty work. The bottom gets warm sometimes but not hot, and even then not consistently warm.
This is for a regular amount of use , not constant office work.

Price is $4369 with her config without any coupons or sales. Current sales bring it down to $3,779.00 before tax, and around 4k after.
The GPU and RAM are of course the main price boosters. Even the RTX 4000 is a 800 something upgrade.

Thanks for the comprehensive review. It was extremely helpful.
For those planning on installing your own additional SATA connected hard drive call Lenovo first. The SATA connector is not included when configured online and you will have to order their hard drive installation kit. Which is a easy and clean install for any basic PC technician. Ordered mine with the basic Quadro T1000 and 512GB SSD drive, 500 nit screen and 16 GB for video and photo editing. I was way overdue for an upgrade. Added another 16GB and the Crucial MX500 2TB SATA SSD drive. Other than having to order and install the hard drive installation kit and having to disable the touch pad so it doesn't interfere when using the TrackPoint; I couldn't be any happier. With the X390 as my ultra portable and my old E545 as a print server I now have a legitimate high speed wireless network to boot.
On a final note the P53 FHD 500 nit screen is gorgeous.

Lisa..I'm looking for windows-based 15 inches 3:2 or 16:10 business laptop with Stable highspeed( gigabit speed) consistent internet connectivity with wifi 6, BT 5& up, min 10th gen 6 core and up, Bright & vivid display in 16:9 OR 3:2 aspect ratio, 400 nits and above brightness in the display, min 16 GB DDR4 RAM, 512- 1TD SSD ( speedy read-write), very good sound quality, very good webcam HD/1080P (especially when we are all working from home and most of the time are on online calls), windows hello. I tried surface laptop & book 3 and those did not work. Can you please suggest. Thanks in advance.

Ctrl and Fn still in the wrong place.
I have a P71. Unfortunately I have been in contact with customer support regarding poor performance.
    First line support is useless.
2nd line, the experts are retarted morons.
Next time I need to get a new workstation will be a problem.
No Lenovo cos of their bad attitude and useless support.
Dell has shut down all ways to communicate before buying and their configurations does not make sense. So, whats is left? Nothing I guess.
    Edit: Added information.
Perrformance with Solidworks was barely measurable better than my then 4 yers older Dell M6800.
    P4000 vs K3100 video.
    Samsung SSD 2800 GB/s vs 500 GB/s.
Told 2:nd line support that I had tried several video drivers including the latest recomended by Lenovo. That driver crashed Solidworks. The answer was: "Have you tried the latest Lenovo driver". Morons.
The driver recomended, tested and approved by Solidworks worked but performance was poor.

thinkpads are overprice for its bad GPUs. Also the power supply of the motherboard is directly connected to the super IO which is not very professional on their part because once the powersupply shorts , the whole motherboard will instantly die. Dont buy thinkpads.

That is not thick, what is thick is a Clevo P series gaming laptops, that ThinkPad P series is relatively thin my comparison, a little tiny bit thicker than older IBM ThinkPad models but not by much.

After my last Thinkpad ($2,600), the Oled screen took a dump at the end of the first year with no support from LENOVO. I am done buying LENOVO, after years buying Thinkpads, since it was IBM, I just switch and I am happy with the Asus, the Asus zenbook Duo works great and built well. Good bye Lenovo. By the way I bought the Oled screen because of your positive review.

hey, great review. I'm a designer, do CAD and Blender modeling and rendering. Just got a Lenovo thinkpad p53. I'm not sure i'm super happy and can't seem to find feedback out there. Got the i7 9859, 32G ram, 512GB drive, nvidia Quadro rtx 3000 etc... my new laptop is ok but I find when I render it's a bit slow??? I'm confused with Quadro rtx 3000 vs ie GeForce rtx 2080?? for example. which is best or faster...

It certainly looks removeable - looks like there are three screws and a ribbon cable holding it in.There are finger divots that look like they're to help you pull it out. It may not be hot-swappable, but that's a different thing and I don't think it's that big of a deal.

The Quadro 5000 is the only Quadro that is worth getting. The Quadro 4000 is like a RTX 2060. A regular Q4000 is like G2060 Super, but since its max - q, its like a regular G2060.

(NVIDIA Quadro T1000 (4GB GDDR5)), but legion Y740 with GPU RTX 2060. Which one is better for my job?
