- When it comes time to finish a custom subwoofer enclosure there are many different options, paint, stain, clear coat, upholstery and more! In this video we use Duratex, a special paint coating specifically designed for speaker enclosures, along with upholstery vinyl to wrap the beauty panel pieces of this custom 13W7AE subwoofer enclosure!

I did a pretty extensive build with my w7 as well. Inlays and a similar texture. Turned out almost as good as yours!! I am very proud of it.

Simply amazing - I hope to do something like this some day. For now my crap MDF box will remain ratchet strapped to the back seat with my amp screwed directly to the sub box. Haha, it works...

I had you design a box enclosure for me a while back, dude this box is badass!! She's 250 lbs without the subs. Coated in Herculiner. Box is always a head turner.

I've just used truck bed liner. It comes out really nice, durable and seals up any air leaks. If it's going to be in the trunk, the wife and kids will throw things at it. I've gotten subs punctured because they don't care. I also have to make it easily moveable if I have to make more room.

How do these 'press fit' panels you make hold up over time?! They look amazing but I've always been worried about material shrinking slightly and making them fall out etc... Great videos, thanks!

When using heavy woofers I like using t nuts and machine screws... MDF can strip out easy...

I'm not a huge fan of the paint, but this enclosure is sweet! That custom emblem you made is a nice touch. Earlier in the build i thought it would be a bit too much, but it is definitely not. Besides, it is YOUR build, not mine! 😊

The paint is a huge time saver, i've used both black and white versions with great success, but it is certainly not a replacement for quality vinyl work. I think it will hold up better over an extended period of time in a moist environment though.
@Chris Huyler I 100% understand the pros to using it. It would probably outlast a carpet application if used in a vehicle that sees lots of "traffic" around the enclosure. And that's a great point on moisture. Especially beneficial in a "jeep" type application.
My dislike stems from the look mainly. Like I said, I'm definitely not knocking people for doing it... but I probably will not use it again, unless there is a perfect scenario.
@@Toyotajunkie I have a single can that has been used for a few different projects. I like it for recessed amp racks. I can make them out of cheap materials and slather this stuff on for a professional look. Then I save the carpet or vinyl work for the trim pieces. The best part is you don't waste material like you do with carpet.
@@Toyotajunkie If you don't like the textured look you can use a foam roller instead and there will be no texture to it but it will still have the hardened properties of the coating.
Any reason you chose not to use the wood inserts to mount the speaker?
I was thinking the same thing. I guess if you don’t ever plan on removing the sub it’s fine.

I order some from Keyston, I noticed your vinyl there is from them. Do you have a preferred line of theirs? I am always unsure of what I am going to get because they carry so many different types.
Never tried the spray grade Duratex but I can vouch for the roller grade. Great stuff!

@derpapito1391 JL's factory-built enclosures are some of the best I've personally seen in terms of build quality and cosmetics. That being said, I agree that this box still looks better

Can you please make a video explaining the difference between 2ohm and 4ohm and what impedance is better for for each set of speakers and subwoofers. I would like to know what impedance is best for midrange and what is best for subwoofers

Hey brother what kind of flat black paint do you use is it spray can i have so much problems finding that color its either too shiney or it has bad streaks in it and im pretty picky ive bought cheap spray paint from Walmart to high dollar name brand paint and no luck ive also tried rolling on some house paint from home depot and had a little better luck but still not the look im looking for thanks once again mark and another awsome build but what can i/we expect coming from you love your vids

I believe you can get white and tint it.
Do you ever use T nuts for mounting subs? Sepecially a sub of that size and weight.

what amplifier would you be using for this build? im looking to get two of these, and finding the PERFECT amplifier has been difficult. especially when I dont understand how ohms work for linking two amplifiers together.
Hi Mark, awhile back you used a JL Audio 10 inch sub and enclosure by JL Audio you had lots of time to dial it in how do like it ?
Would using screws instead of brad nails cause any sort of acoustic difference?

I'd be curious to see how well this takes paint...maybe primer in-between. I wanna do a textured finish on my box and then spray with SEM color match, to match my interior. Texture wise this seems like it sits in the middle of actual bed liner and wet coats of the rattle can stuff or maybe the interior panel texture spray.

Mark , what sprayer are you using , I see that it is a HVLP gun, I know 3M MAKES a similar one with removable nozzles for easy cleaning , any info would be helpful ..

Hello! I have an off topic question to anyone who sees this.. I installed component speakers in my car and used a harness adapter to install tweeter to factory location.. how do I wire the after market tweeters to the new crossover? the tweeters are located in the dash, do i ditch the original harness and run a wire all the way from the dash to the door panel where the new crossover is located? i have an amp ready to install
Is there any strong chemical smell after the box us sprayed? Or will heat in the summer time cause any smells inside the vehicle? Really nice build.
No. Duratex has no real smell to it. A respirator isn't needed at all nor does it off-gas in a vehicle.

So has this coating hold up? Thinking of taking the carpet off my box and apply this coating. Main thing I’m worried does adhere to the box real well? My box for my Rockford T2 13” is a really tight fit to install into my 2016 Chevy Malibu, definitely don’t want it coming off if it hits the interior body of my trunk.
I've used it on a LOT of projects and have yet to see any chip away.

Very nice (looking)! How come you didn’t add any damping and/or insulation materials in the sub (while making sound tests)?? Seems counterintuitive when used a lot of money on the sub speaker alone + the fabrication, details and so on…
