Meguiar's iron decon D1801 is truly my favorite ferrous decontaminant for its super fast response and power on brake dust!. Too bad it is more and more expensive in France. From €89 it has risen to almost €120 per gallon today. Thank you French taxes! LOL. so at times I have to fall back on a less expensive product like the sonax fallout cleaner 5 liters (1.32 gallons) ref 05135050 which also for bodywork and wheels and effective, but much less reactive and less good on other dirt than the D1801 but only cost me 50€~!
This is getting a bit hardcore about it... but you might want to remove the tar before the iron, because it's technically possibly there could be some iron hiding underneath the tar that you would miss if you went iron then tar removal - make sense? It's splitting hairs... but if you are doing a concourse level detail, something to consider.

D1801 is awesome but it really is far too strong in terms of smell. If it cannot be stored indoors, it's really strong on my meter. For example, I have a bottle of Sonax wheel cleaner plus stored in a closet inside my house currently. I do not smell it at all. The iron decon (D1801) smells up the garage even in the gallon container. It's definitely professional grade and I have yet to use anything more effective, but consumers should heed my warning here. Hey Cameron, it would really depend on the user and their needs/constraints. If you are a typical tunnel car wash, for example, then you wouldn't have the luxury of time or a second rinse location, so you would need to spray this onto a dirty car before it went through the tunnel (which would then rinse it off). We have done testing for those applications and it performs exceptionally well, despite being less than ideal. For an enthusiast or detailer, I would recommend washing the vehicle first, drying it, and then applying D1801 so that it can be as undiluted and in as much direct contact as possible. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Sometimes I feel I am stuck with my gallon of products too long and can’t buy new ones until I finish the old. Many times new products come out before I finish my gallons. It’s a trap. Maybe it’s time we order less.
D1801 offers more lubrication than water does, so by spraying it onto the wheels dry, you would actually REDUCE the likelihood of scratches. Also, if you spray it onto a dry wheel, then pressure wash, in many situations you wouldn't even need to physically agitate at all - totally eliminating the chance for scratching. Now, if it didn't get them 100% clean, at that point the wheel is now both wet with water and the second application of D1801, so any fear of scratching from the wheel being dry is void. Hope that helps!
