Akaso Brave 7 - How does it compare to the DJI Osmo Action?

  • If you are interested in the AKASO Brave 7 then this video might be worth a watch before you buy. I've concentrated on the 4K video because lets face it that is why we buy camera's with these specs. You could work around the sound issue with the Brave 7 by using an external sound recorder. I haven't tested it yet, but it's quite possible you may be able to use the sound recorder on your smart phone with a lavalier microphone as an external recorder.
    If you are interested in the Osmo Action here is the link as promised:-

    Both cameras take decent video. Thanks for making a very well organized video. I like you because I feel like I am talking with a friend. Laid back, clear, no obnoxious repetition that is typical of a lot of other youtubers. I haven't subscribed lately to another camera channel because I haven't cone across any channels that appealed to me in any special way. But I will subscribe to yours because I just like your presentation.
    Thanks, and keep 'em coming. I just went to see your channel and see that camera reviews and comparisons is not what you specialize in. Very impressive. Looking forward to more on cameras. I wonder what you think of the canon m50, which I purchased recently. I love it because it's a pro quality camera allowing interchangeable lenses and cost nothing for what it is. It is a mirrorless so it weighs nothing. With a $100 decent quality adapter, you can use your lenses from your full frame. Sorry for digressing so drastically. I just feel like I can do that with you. Good luck with your channel.

      Hi Perry. Thanks for the feedback. No unfortunately my channel isn't just focused on camera's although I'd love it if it was. I loved making the comparison video's and the testing that I did on both the Akaso and the DJI Osmo. I'm quite a fan of DJI's range of products and can't wait for them to release the Osmo 2 (or what ever they decide to call it). I'm trying to save for a new camera at the moment and I've always loved Canon. I've looked at the M50 and it does look a great camera however I quite fancy the 90D. I know the cost is a lot more but the 90D is such a great all round camera. The M50 would be quite a bit lighter than the 90D so would probably be easier for prolonged hand held usage but I think I would prefer the beefier feel to the 90D. When I can eventually afford it I will definitely review what ever camera I get.

    FYI: Akaso came out with the Akaso Brave LE which has a 40m waterproof underwater housing and a functioning internal microphone. Thanks for the review!

    • @ItsWhatIDo
      @ItsWhatIDo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. It's odd that Akaso had a launch edition (LE) which had a better microphone than the full version. It leads you to believe that the cause of the microphone issue is the increased waterproofing spec. I originally thought it might have been an assembly wax or grease that might have been at fault. However if you watch my other video where I've done further testing you see that I do manage to get an improvement after using hot/warm water. This would lend weight to the waterproof membrane being to thick and stiff. The warm water softened the membrane and the mic improved. However when it cooled down it went back to poor sound. I'm still waiting on the promised external microphone that Akaso promised. Thank you for watching the review and taking the time to comment.

    Hey, Thank you for this review. The night mode video is the deal breaker of them two.

    • @ItsWhatIDo
      @ItsWhatIDo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment. I'm glad you enjoyed the review. Yes the night mode was a disappointment. Overall the Osmo is a far superior camera with far more settings than the Brave. And I never touched on any of the manual setting you can use. However it is over twice the price unless you can find a deal somewhere. For me the Brave will be a secondary camera, used to shoot alternate angles and B roll video.

    I spoke to Akaso too about the internal mic issue. They also said they would send me an external mic.
    They first said to me it was a firmware issue but after more conversation they finally told me that the real reason the internal mic is poor is that they have put a membrane over the mic to achieve the new IP rating (waterproofing). So this will not be fixed with a firmware update.
    If you budget is tight you may as well pay around £120 and get the Akaso 7LE which mic works great and comes with waterproof housing. If you have a little more money, go for the DJI. Amazing Camara that rivals the go pros and can be bought for just over £200.

    • @ItsWhatIDo
      @ItsWhatIDo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally agree with you. The Osmo is a fantastic camera all round. I think Akaso has really damaged it's standing with the Brave 7. I've repeatedly told them they need to be honest with people. They have known what the issue is with the mic for quite a long time but still keep on lying about it. The best thing they could have done was admit their mistake and carried out a product recall on it. I have now received the promised external mic and while it is a lot better it still isnt as good as the osmo's internal mic unless you have it right near your mouth. I've released a video on it with a bit of silliness at the end which proves the point.

  • @vincentkeith5259
    @vincentkeith5259 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    It's not always easy to tell, but it seems the DJI is sharper. I also think the DJI is slightly better at stabilization. I'm not sure how much the color saturation matters - don't most people adjust that in post anyway?

    • @ItsWhatIDo
      @ItsWhatIDo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Vincent. Thanks for the comment. I don't think anyone can deny that the DJI is the better camera all round. Especially when you take the sound issues into account as well. However to give Akaso props their camera is half the retail price of the DJI. You can get the DJI a bit cheaper than DJI list it however.

    Hi, according to info here from youtube sound issue "fix" for internal microphone that worked for some people (not all though) was in turning off noise reduction filter.

    • @ItsWhatIDo
      @ItsWhatIDo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tried that and it didnt have any effect. The mic is working. If you tap on the frame it picks up the sound. It's like something is blocking the sound from reaching the mic. We'll see what it's like when I get the external mic they are sending me. There is a workaround that I'm in the process of filming.

      Their is no noise reduction filter. I already checked. The external akaso mic works great. Very loud. Good enough for me . But the internal mic is really the worse I have ever seen. I have the volume all the way up and you can't hear me even when I'm 8 inches away. But i did notice that if you play your video on your tablet , all of a sudden you get proper sound again. Weird. Yes , they need to fix internal mic on camera.

    • @ItsWhatIDo
      @ItsWhatIDo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suspect that someone in the development team made a huge error and by the time they found out orders and sales had reached a point where they had little choice but to go ahead. It's very disappointing. I did mention to them that they would get a lot more respect from people if they were honest about it. They more than likely know what the issue is now and I don't think the firmware update is going to sort it out. If you tap on the case while recording you hear it perfectly well. I think it's something to do with the waterproof membrane they have used. Not sure if you have seen it but I've done a video on a possible workaround using your smart phone. Undoubtedly but is it twice as good? After all it's twice the price of the Brave

      The price is pretty good but not when you consider the major sound flaw.

      Definitely a possibility however before spending my own money on another Akaso product I will have to think hard about it.

    hard to avoid £ 337 v £ 135 in 2023 prices -

      The Osmo Action 1 is very hard to find now. When I bought mine it cost me £208 from Argos's Ebay page. I still wouldn't recommend the Akaso Brave 7 because of the sound issues. The video quality is fine and can be a good B Roll camera or second angle cam but I would not rely on it for your sound track.

    You need to go for a walk in the Park , somewhere nice to film , someone's crappie garden ? !

    • @ItsWhatIDo
      @ItsWhatIDo  ปีที่แล้ว

      I could probably do that but then it's about the camera not the view. And it's nice to know you think my garden is crappie.

      Using google translate that comes out as 'Lower the bird and raise the sound of the nerd voice' and I have no idea what you are referring to?
