    My first half marathon was the best day of my life so far, I still look back at it with joy. I ran it on my 22nd birthday! Best birthday EVER - I can’t even explain how strong and amazing I felt and I hope you feel that way too!

    I’m only like 10 minutes into the video - but I wanted to say the mental prep is honestly just as important as a training plan! Sounds corny but visualizing yourself DOING the half and especially crossing the finish line is key. I did an Ironman in May and you just have to convince yourself / picture that you will finish!

    • @reagan5372
      @reagan5372 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not quite old enough to do an ironman yet, but as soon as I'm old enough I am going to do one! Do you have any other tips on terms of training/in general?

    The one thing I’ve learned from running is that it is a personal sport. The only person you’re competing against is yourself. You’re constantly playing the mental game with yourself to keep you going. I absolutely love running and I’m currently training for all 3 Disney Princess races in February. Thank you for sharing, Taylor!!

    Thank you for mentioning you were fitted at the running store for shoes because so many people just randomly choose shoes without getting fitted and the right shoes for YOUR feet are SO important! I have some good shoes and yet they killed my toes when I ran and then I got fitted and my feet are so happy now!! I wanted to run a marathon after I saw “Brittany runs a marathon” but I am not a runner but I started doing 5K and that is perfect for me. Good luck on your marathon, I know you are gonna kick butt!

    Although I'm 15, I've had my fair share of races. The race atmosphere is like nothing else. It is incredible, and the adrenaline when the gun goes off, the cheering of the crowds throughout the race, and the final kick to the finish line cannot be matched. And watching other racers after you've finished, cheering them on is the best feeling ever!!

    Yay!!!! I’ve been running half marathons since 2016 and have my next one at the end of February! I run intervals even on race day so I’m pretty slow but I’m actually even slower when I try to run straight through so it works for me. At the races I run there are definitely people who walk the whole time and manage to keep up the minimum pace which, in my opinion, is pretty dang impressive! I could never walk 13.1 miles that fast, I have to run!

    I’ve run 87 half marathons - they’re my favorite distance! Running long distances is all about learning what your body likes and doesn’t like. I would suggest no coffee right before a long run, you’ll need to find a bathroom very quickly if you drink that. Also, if you have a sensitive stomach like I do, Imodium will be your best friend!

  • @bags_books_and_bowwows

    Woo hoo, you've got this! Three things:
    1. All- weather running shoes are great to have on hand for actual damp days (bonus: layer a pair of windproof pants over your leggings)
    2. 500 mile max on the shoes, but go a little less while you're training. New pair now, and a backup pair to pull out for that new shoe extra bounce in case you hit a slump.
    3. Most of the long-term marathoners rotate their shoes. You're young, so your body might not complain, but be ready if it does! If I feel the miles in my feet, I go higher on the drop, if it's in my knees, I go lower.

      Highly recommend a combo wool/cotton running socks, leaning more on the wool side, especially in WA weather. I live in WA too and on a run last year in low-40’s weather, I lost feeling in my toes because they were so cold. Your feet will thank you for it.

    I LOVEEEE the Nike Running app. I’m a terrible runner, but I want to run a marathon this year, so I started the marathon program from the beginning with no real date in place. I can definitely see how it would be more challenging to just jump into, say, week five versus week one, because they do really talk you through what your 10k/5k pace should feel like on those initial runs. Either way, so excited to watch your journey!

  • @laurenburrow4338
    @laurenburrow4338 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yay for going half crazy! I’m on half marathon training again also. Hoping to get three races in this year! 😅 I’ll start by saying it’s definitely putting all your fitness and nutrition science to work! I never knew how much my body loved and needed carbs until I started running more seriously. My favorite pre-run meals are always yogurt bowls with fruit and granola or banana oatmeal, usually 1 hour to 1.5 hours before hand if I’m running longer than 4 miles. Start researching running accessories that will work best for you too, especially as runs get longer. You’ll eventually need to hydrate during long runs and there’s lots of options on how to do this. I personally hate carrying a water bottle so a water pouch that fits in a pocket or belt or even a Camelbak work better for me. As far as hair, I like a high pony and then I braid the loose hair so it’s not flying all over the place. You mentioned running for an hour, a half marathon will take you 2-3 hours so try to mentally prepare for that one! There’s loads more I could add, but just as you have been doing, keep researching! You’ll find what works best for your body and create a pattern of it. As you get closer to race day you don’t want to try new things before runs, familiar is very safe with running! Enjoy the process! I’m excited to watch your journey!!! Best of luck ❤️

    I hope to run my first half Marathon race. I'm running for fun. I use to run a half marathon every month until I broke my ankle. I haven't run it in awhile, I may run it tomorrow as I am too shattered for it today.
    You can run a lot further than you think. Find a mantra that helps you. Mine are lungs of easy breathing and legs of steels, I know steel is contradictory, but it works for me. I also think of women runners that inspire me, Fiona Oakes and Courtney Dauwalter. I also remind myself my body will try to stop me at points, it's my job to tell to it that I can do it.
    I got this advice from a running coach. If you are having trouble with your legs, stop and do 10 legs swings (5/side) and 10 squats. It really does help refresh the legs then carry on running.

      Also, for my training regiment, I only did two runs a week. Every week I would add a mile onto one run and remove a mile from the other. For example, one week I would run 7 miles one day and 6 miles another, the next week I would run 8 miles one day and 5 miles the other etc until I ran 13 miles in one day. I did this on top of my strength training, where I reduced the volume on my leg days.

The Versa has a 7 day battery life though, so I just keep the charger in my bathroom and charge it once a week on my pamper day while I’m shaving or something.

    - [ ] Practice the Breakfast that you are going to eat before the race during training. Sometimes things you are used to eat can upset you stomach if you run after.
    - [ ] You don’t have to run 21k in training before your race. Maybe go up to 13-15k
    - [ ] Invest in a good running jacket for the winter. Cover your extremities (gloves, beanie, socks).
    - [ ] Good running socks are essentials
    - [ ] Nothing new on race day (nutrition, outfit, pace …)
    - [ ] Nutrition during the run : consider carrying water with electrolytes and some food to fuel your running during run longer than 60 min
    - [ ] Training in any weather makes you more confident for the weather during the race. If you can run under the rain you can do anything !!!!
    - [ ] Progress takes time ! So much time. I suggest to new runners to start by doing a run walk method (there are plans on internet) or after a long break from running (2 weeks or more). Then increase your running slowly (there are methods on internet like the 10% rule) and don’t add distance and intensity at the same time (speed workout). For exemple if you run 20k a week for 4 week you can change one run for a speed run say 5k. But if your add 5k, they have to be slow. Then after a few weeks at 25-30k you can add intensity again.
    Good luck Taylor 👍👍

    I did a half marathon in 2019. I used couch to 5k, then 5k to 10k. Then the Nike run club from 10K to marathon. I'd never really run before and I finished the half ran the whole way. Lost 2 toenails but it was a great accomplishment. Would recommend them all.

    Okay so as someone who is a COMPLETE CHAOS runner (I am also slow, mostly because I run on a whim and have zero consistency with anything I do), I have completed 18 half marathons mostly untrained. My first one I completed after only ever having run up to two consecutive miles (I was also wearing brand new shoes and a tutu). All this to say, YOU CAN DO THIS.

    Girl, I looked at NRC for my training just now. Nope to starting at the 13.1 bc they have me running 3.1 at the end of my first week. Then I looked at 5k training, also nope not ready for that level either. I was like, “I guess I’m beginner.” Also nope bc it has the first run for 20mins. WTH! I’m going to stick to my C25K for now. I may use it when I get to the 13.1 training.

    I really recommend the book Run Better by Jean-Francois Harvey : it has programs, running form tips, workouts to boost your performance and also a guide of the most common runners injuries. I’m currently following the half marathon program 16 weeks. I do three runs - two days recovery (cross training or walking) and two days strength training. The first long run was 45 min. which was really doable for me (my longest run in my life was 12k) Anyways goodluck! I should be running the half marathon on may 1st !

    I believe Nick Bare of BPN has his run/workout plan and I think it's on the playbook app. Nick is very well known for his running. Also I would look at maybe checking out Dan Holguin aka rastarunner. He also has a run program. Another well known name is Chris Hinshaw.

    I’ve started using the NRC app and as it’s been a year since my last run I started with the recovery run. I probably did the recovery run and the next run twice before the first speed run. Needed to hype myself up first 🤣
