    I've run a few unofficial half marathons just on my own, and I cannot express how important it is to START OUT SLOW and then gradually increase your pace if you are able to!

      ahhh yes! thank you

    • @amandabenson1793
      @amandabenson1793 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was totally coming on to suggest the same thing. Long runs are meant to be a slower pace- it’s all about time on your feet and not about getting faster. It’s very much a mental challenge and not easy to do. But your body will absolutely thank you once you can manage it and you should feel much less (or no) pain afterwards. It really helped me to keep track of my pace on my watch until I gained a strong sense of what a comfortable pace would feel like in my body.

    • @reagan5372
      @reagan5372 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@amandabenson1793 Finding your easy pace is so essential! A great way to gauge it is by monitoring your heart rate, keeping it in the aerobic zone. Of course, heart rate monitors are never going to be 100% accurate, but I have found them to be mostly very accurate! And since easy runs are based on how your body feels, as opposed to a certain pace (although it can be helpful to use pace as a guide as well), and heart rate is generally also based on how you feel (somedays your typical "easy pace" may feel harder and your heartrate will therefore be higher, so you know to slow the pace down a bit), I really like to use heart rate as a guide, especially when I'm on the treadmill!

      I start off my first mile fast (whatever fast may be to you), then maintain the next 10miles moderate speed, and the last 2miles pushing it a bit depending on the time you’re aiming for. 🙂

    Start much slower than you want to on race day! The 10 mile run you do on your own is much harder then when you actually run on race day, so congrats on already finishing the hardest part! Make sure to stop at your water stations on race day even when you don't feel like it! Lastly, enjoy! How awesome is it to experience such an amazing feat with so many like minded yet diverse individuals!

    You are amazing! I had the same feeling after finishing my first double digit run, and now I run ultra marathons lol
    A few tips:
    - You probably already do this, but a dynamic warmup before can really help warm your body up! Think like walking quad stretch, leg swings, high knees, butt kicks, etc. But also be aware that the first time you run a new distance there will be some minor aches and pains so don't beat yourself up :)
    - If you start to run in the morning and notice your stomach is off, I would suggest reducing your fiber intake the day before long runs and race day!
    - Also totally agree with everyone else about starting out slow and making sure to drink water on course. Also might be a good idea to practice drinking gatorade too since that is a great source of electrolytes and quick calories if your stomach decides it doesn't want gels on race day.

    • @TaylorWoods
      @TaylorWoods  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i loveeee blue gatorade that's a great idea! thank you!! honestly may have some now lol and yes to going slow! that day i was bad and went too fast too soon and the last few miles were harder, but also i'm still learning and it was my first go! ahh! and 100000% to dynamic warmups oh my gosh. i could never imagine NOT dynamically warming up now, it is the best feeling!

    Taylor I love your Miley hoodie and I want one 🤓 also I’ve been training for my first marathon and it’s a really big undertaking for me so watching you on your running journey is really motivating and makes me feel like I’m not doing it alone. Would love to see a full video of what you do to support/supplement your running. Anything from deciding what/how much/when to eat, recovery, and mobility/stretching routine to how you balance running and strength type workouts. I feel like half the battle of running is all the things you have to do to support your running and how much time it feels like it takes up plus figuring out nutrition on top of it is a lot! It’s a lot more than just going for runs so finding someone on a similar journey is really helpful!

    You’re doing great with all this prep. Definitely start slow. Especially on race day because the adrenaline of all the people can make you start too fast and then you’re tired way earlier than you planned.

      Agree with this 1000%. I’ve run 4-5 half’s and still have to be super careful the first 2 miles- it’s so easy to get lost in the excitement and the crowd at the beginning. And then you totally regret that overexcitement by mile 10 🤣 🤦‍♀️

    I'm so enjoying watching this because I feel like you are earnestly trying to prepare and respect your body (I'm sure you've seen the crazy "running a marathon with 4 weeks prep from couch potato" type videos and they always make me mad bc it's such a silly way to encourage people to hurt themselves doing the same).
    Runner since forever, I ran my first half in 2015, and back then I was really just a social runner. My worst part was that lacking the distance experience, my whole body hurt from K17, and the last 4K felt like forever. You are preparing with proper longer runs, so I am sure that this part should be fine for you. You also have strength from strength training etc, which gives you an advantage!
    I have later gone on to run marathons and even ultras, but the 10K and half marathon distances are still very close to my heart, those give all distances where you can really explore the limits to what you can do in terms of speed, and I'm currently also prepping for a half and hoping to run a sub-90 minutes, but prepping is always a roller coaster, so we'll see 😅
    If I were to give 3 main tips, they are these:
    - You don't need as much food as you think, eat a good breakfast, a gel before and one during the race, you'll be fine, but focus on water intake - it's ok to walk for a bit by water stations to make sure you drink properly. You will get dehydrated much faster than your glycogen levels fall, and you'll feel it more, so get at least a good few mouthfuls at every station. You'll make any lost seconds up in energy later.
    - Start slow. You should almost feel bored in the first half, but focus on the crowds and the ambiance and only start pushing 2/3 through, when you know your energy stores will last you!
    - Enjoy it and don't put pressure on yourself. You will be so excited after the race, you are going to want to sign up for a next one, and having a modest first result will give you motivation to set a smart goal for your next.
    Keep going, have fun!

    My dad has run a few marathons and he always ate spaghetti the day before and the morning of a race he ate pancakes with a banana. Its sounds weird to eat a pancake in the morning but it helps. They are (dutch) flat pancakes btw. 😁

    Pleas DON'T tell yourself you're tired. It makes running further longer. Make up a mantra that will help you if you haven't already. I always like to think back on a time when I couldn't run either from injury or because I wasn't into running.
    Smile more and say hello or cheer on another runner when you're running. I do this, especially if it looks like someone is struggling, I say you're doing great, or you can do it. It gives a zing of happiness to you and the person who is running as it. (Tthere was a grumpy man that would walk my old route. I would say hello every morning. After a few months, he finally smiled back and said hello. Best booster.)
    If your legs are feeling tired, stop and do 10 leg swings on each side and 10 squats then start again. I kid you not, your legs will thank you.

    Any recommendations for outer hip pain? I have angered my right hip running so much, that now I can't even jog across my front yard without my hip immediately starting to bother me. Only feel it when running though, no other activity bothers me 🤷‍♀️

    Personally, I don't think it's wise to have a time goal the first time you race a distance - that way lies injuries. Mostly because before you've raced that distance you don't actually know what your benchmark pace for that distance is. (Got a new guy with cascading injuries in my running club - he came from cycling and was absolutely aerobically fit enough to do a sub-22 5k, which is what he decided to do, but he'd never run before and so didn't have the muscular and skeletal endurance for that, and he refused to listen to our coach when he said to slow down and just work on base first.)
    ALSO piriformis syndrome: stretch after runs, absolutely, but STRENGTH. I don't like clamshells on the floor because it is easy to accidentally swivel the hips so that the lower back and hammies take over, which doesn't help if piriformis is acting up. I do them on a bench, prone (can also be done on your bed, or on the sofa) - lie on the edge so the working leg can be straight to the floor, glue your hips down, then move working leg foot over the back of the resting knee, then clamshell to horisontal. That way you cannot recruit other muscle groups to do the work you want piriformis the hip stabilisers to do.

    If you’re hurting, you’re probably running too fast! Long runs are meant to be run slow (not my words, I went to a running event and a coach told me this when I expressed the same thing) - I got injured not long after so be careful!

    I'm about to start physical therapy school and I'm proud of myself when I thought of your piriformis when you said you're glute was hurting 😂. To strengthen hip flexors try doing a march with a kettlebell (just google image "kettlebell hip flexor") its suppose to be really good for recovering runners :)
