This behaviour had me confused for ages but believe it or not the PIxhawk is performing normally. More specifically, Arducopter is doing everything it’s meant to do. It’s all about the PID feedback loop and the software stepping in to correct what it thinks is happening. When it receives a throttle command it expects movement (lift) that needs some corrective input from it, but with the props off this movement doesn’t happen so it adds more throttle to try and make something happen. Still no reaction so it adds more throttle. And on and on and on until it’s at full throttle. When I put the props on and took it outside for a test flight it worked perfectly.

I'm glad to hear you fixed yours. I've recalibrated the accel and mag several times and uploaded plane firmware and then copter firmware to wipe the board and nothing has worked. I've put on a new PDB too and that hasn't worked either.

It turned out not to be a fault but normal PID loop behaviour for the Pixhawk. Because I'm sending instructions to the Pixhawk, it expects to see data from its sensors to say it's moving that it can then correct to keep itself level and stable. Because there is no feedback to my inputs, you get this weird behaviour. Shortly after this I took it out and flew it without any problems.

No luck, I'm afraid. Have you seen the discussion here? discuss.ardupilot.org/t/pixhawk-2-4-8-clone-and-problems-with-copter-firmware-above-3-2-1/13957/10
My last hope is to flash BLHeli to remove SimonK out of the equation, but after that, I'm out of ideas. Not had chance to do this yet, but will hopefully this week.

just to let you know 3.3.3 is not good as well, there is no throttle problem but right stick has some issues as well making crash on ground test, this is new pixhawk ? 2.4.8 from ebay ?
I have two pixhawks both same exactly units, same problem with both :(
