    Plot twist: consoles get delayed while Sony and Microsoft wait on each other for pricing

  • @bobertoroberto953

    PS4 had an estimated BoM of $372 before ~$9 manufacturing costs added in. Without Kinect, Xbox One came in at an estimated $382, with additional $14 manufacturing costs. Sony was taking a slight loss on the $399 msrp, but denied the $60 loss per unit "insider" estimates. A ~$450 BoM puts you in a no-man's land of sorts. On the high side if you're looking for $399 launch price, and maybe risking perception issues at $499 if your competitor is sandwiching you in between a more powerful unit at $499, and a budget model at $299-349.
    This is assuming Bloomberg isn't just bullshit. I think Sony is waiting for MS to reveal the XSX price. If $499, they'll launch at $399 and eat the loss. If XSX comes in at $599(unlikely), then they'll feel ok at $499 with no loss on hardware.

      I disagree. The kinect build costs couldn't be pass $50. Amd the total xbox one costs with kinect equated to $471. When it comes down to it Sony were able to get more power out of their build. If the same prevails and they have about the same total costs this time around Sony could potentially squeeze out more power and performance than MS.
      For instance if total costs for both consoles are around $500 its very likely Sony would get better performance per dollar.

    • @mjc0961

      Eh. $450 BoM cost VS a $400 MSRP will be fine for Sony. All they have to do is sell the person who bought it two years of PS+ and they've already turned a profit on that buyer. Plus they make money back on every game and every accessory. Selling consoles at a loss knowing you'll make the money back over time is nothing new, it was happening all the way back in the 90s.

      here is a hint if you are a xbox phone plan they changed your xbox one x for a new series x without increasing costs it is obvious that's gonna be maximum 499 but since xbox onex has been that price? it was cut down to even 350 since last november, I believe that microsoft can eat more loss than sony and sell even more powerful console at 399, xbox is in the down side of this history and I think is that why sony is struggling in putting a price tag, if microsoft can tag 399 and again they are likely to will do it, then sony will be in a very though situation anyway they will tag 399 but weaker console this time

    • @coolumar335

      Exactly correct figures there. On launch, Sony was banking on the average launch-console purchase to additionally include at least 1 game in order to make a profit. Funny thing was that on avg. most people at launch bought 2 games, including myself, lol.
      Sony is also in a much different place financially than in 2013...a $500-550 msrp blow can be lessened by over 30 million ps plus subscriptions and if the rumors are true, Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, Polyphony and a few other are looking at launch exclusive titles...

      Well that's always the problem isn't it?
      In general people aren't willing to pay the price for the performance they demand from a console but don't seem to mind paying a lot more for components.
      You always have some consumers looking at a console launch like the PS4 and going "my GTX 980 Ti is better, DOA."
      Pricing? What's that? They want their cake and they wanna eat it too, don't you dare charge more than I few hundred but they expect the performance of a thousand dollars machine.
      I can bet you right now when the PS5 and xXxXxXx come out at supposedly ~499$ you will have people * laughing in RTX 2080 * over looking the little detail that that GPU alone is twice the money but somehow they expect a full box for half the price to match its performance other wise is just old tech they say.

    • @souljastation5463
      @souljastation5463 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      You're right, although I'm afraid that the weaker Xbox will hold back the entire gaming industry: third party games (and in the case of Microsoft, also first party ones) will have to be capable of running on the weakest hardware.
      Now, if the "Cheap Box" will have the same CPU and an SSD but just a weaker GPU of the expensive box, then it could run games designed for the big console but just with less pretty visuals.
      But if the cheap box will have a weaker CPU and no SSD then we have a problem, because games will have to be designed from the ground up with the limitations of that machine in mind, meaning that the extra speed of the CPU and SSD of the new consoles will go to waste.

    Considering how quickly production costs tend to go down, it's pretty doubtful Microsoft and Sony are going to let said costs dictate how things pan out over the course of the entire console generation. The launch is when these companies need to push the adoption rate the hardest because the company that gets a leg-up in that first year often has a pretty big advantage in the long term. And yes, they will use game sales and online subscriptions to off-set the cost. Probably ad-revenue as well.
    Finally, I'm not sure why you brought up the retail price of the 5700xt. The current price was largely determined based on what a 40% markup would be based off yields at launch. So not only will Sony be able to drop the manufacturing costs by ordering in massive quantities, but they won't have to pay the markup and yields have improved substantially since the 5700xt's launch. Basically, the retail price of a similar part isn't going to be a good indicator of the APU's production cost. Not that it's completely useless, but it's almost apples and oranges at this point.

    In 2013, we were coming out of a global recession and analysts predicting consoles were dead. It was not ideal to build a $500+ console and the CPU is testament to that. Spending money on GPU also meant games could 'look' next gen - even if they didn't perform better or have anything particularly ground breaking in terms of game-play.
    The gap between console and PC was quite large - mostly because of the CPU's and why PC's were offering 60fps where the consoles were limited to 30fps.
    7yrs later, we are in a different economic situation and you also have to factor in inflation. $500 (factoring in inflation) wouldn't be the most expensive console and not even including the PS3's price at launch.
    If the specs are worth it, I would be willing to pay more for a console - especially if it can last 6yrs+ without needing a mid-gen refresh to boost visuals/performance to see out the end of the gen.

    • @archetype6351
      @archetype6351 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly though, I still think that the 2013 consoles were very clever on their hardware selection. The 8gb of shared ram especially. I feel like this gen has aged considerably better than last gen. In the past you had examples like battlefield 4 in which there was a massive difference between let's say the ps3 version and the pc. Now, while obviously there is a difference, it's nowhere near what 360/ps3 vs pc was. It went from "there is no comparison" to "it takes a hit but it still looks like the same game". You probably end up with a 30fps refresh and the usual 1080p instead of the higher resolutions achievable by a mid range card, but still, doesn't look half bad and even compares decently to a pc in terms of just visual make up.
      Something that was supposed to be competitive to the consoles like a 750ti aged terribly worse. Games like rdr2 and shadow of the tomb raider are undoable on that card at console settings.
      Another thing to keep in mind is that they were coming from the ps3 launch, and how outrageous the price was back then. They couldn't risk to try that again.
      So even though $500 more or less makes sense, I still think they'll probably handle the loss and sell it at 399.

      Blue Raven I think you might be saying that because we have had a mid console upgrade. The base PS4 and One are struggling right now. Take Jedi fallen order for example. Everything is down graded and even then there are massive pauses to load environments with noticeable pop in. If it wasn’t for the console refresh these consoles aged much much worse

    • @archetype6351
      @archetype6351 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@snc237 Wasn't the issue with fallen order just poor data streaming? There are people claiming they had it on pc too to some extent (less than on console). Maybe the slow cpu cores and the mechanical hard drive were at fault? That game seems more like a problem case than a normal thing though.
      And no I wasn't taking the enhanced consoles into account. Most people are on the base systems, and while I agree that sometimes there are issues like with fallen order the norm in general has been to stick to 1080p or 900p when necessary and offer stable performance. Well, that's PS4. The One however is another can of worms.

Im just so glad these new consoles are fixing the 2 biggest problems with last generation slow hard drives and weak cpu’s. It crazy to think what they’ve done with those jaguar cores and what their gonna do with some power ryzen cores. I go back in forth with pc’s and consoles but lately ive really got back into pc’s. I love gaming in general and will always buy the new consoles i have a one x, ps pro, and switch. It nice to sit on the couch and play games. I never liked using a mouse and keyboard as much because it’s just more comfortable to use a controller and I play 90% of pc games with one. I love aiming with the mouse but hate movement on a keyboard. This generation is gonna bridge the gap between consoles and pc’s and should push graphical fidelity, ai, and framerate much further. Its crazy to think games like god of war or horizon zero dawn were using a cpu as weak as the jaguar, it’s just that console games are so much more optimized and down to the metal. With pc’s there’s just so many variations of hardware and software.

      The PC keyboard is really not good for games. The d-pad was invented in 1982 according to Wikipedia, but on keyboards you are still forced to use WASD, which is clearly worse. And certainly worse than an analog stick. The mouse is great though for many games. But unfortunately not very couch friendly.

    I really hope they don't rely on a comparatively small amount of traditional SSD storage next gen. The only way storage won't be a joke next gen is if they support a small SSD acting as a cache in conjunction with an appropriately sized HDD. Thankfully, MS and Sony have both hinted at this with the notion of using the SSD as a streaming/page file style device. Assuming they don't use a stupidly large SSD you can probably cut this Bloomberg estimation down by ~$50, which brings the console down to a level where it could be comfortably sold at cost or with only a small loss per unit at the $400 price point. Even closer to that point if they were to release a 'base' model without an optical drive.

      While a lot of casual gamers still got the PS3, a significant number didn't.
      If PS5 is $600, casual gamers including parents (who simply buy a console for the family or the kids as an entertainment system) won't know all about the hardware prices and all the features. What they will do is compare the price to a PC (a normal pc), and think it's too expensive.

      Unless you’re dumb, comparing the price of then and now is inaccurate due to infliction. The PS3 launched at $599 which is around $717 right now in 2020. That’s way higher than most find acceptable both now and back then. That’s why the PS3 was deemed to have a high price.
      The PS4 launched at $399 and was deemed affordable. When converted that’s $441 right now. A PS5 launching at $450 to $500 is literally within the regions of affordability. It’s *not* a high price at all unless one considers the original PS4 price as being high.

      Also, I said "hardcore gamers". The hardcore PS fan you're describing just sounds like a PS fanboy. Hardcore gamers (excluding fanboys) actually take into account performance, exclusives (how many, how good are they) before deciding which console to get. Hardcore gamers can switch from PS to Xbox depending on which system is stronger during which generation.
      Many hardcore gamers actually wait for exclusives or for price to drop. Hardcore gamers may have preferences but true gamers game for the games and are not loyal to just one brand. We go for the best experience. And true gamers are not blind fanboys.
      Casual console gamers just wanna play a few popular games and maybe the sport games like FIFA, NBA 2k and so on with their friends. They don't care if the price is fair because they don't know or care about the inner workings.
      And there are parents, the parents who hardly ever play games, and only time they play is to spend time with the kids. Those will only look at price and nothing else. They buy consoles for their kids and worry about price tag. They don't give a fuvk about anything you're going on about.
      All these people affect sales. Hardcore gamers and mindless fanboys make up a large proportion but so do casual gamers and parents who aren't gamers.
      Sony, in particular, really consider all types of people, not just proper gamers.

      Not to mention multi platform games, 30-50% more power available for games like GTA 6, Battlefield, Call Of Duty, Elder Scrolls 6 etc.
      For the casuals who don't care for exclusives, There far more likely to go for the best looking version of the game being the Series X or if they want the cheaper console that still plays the newer games the Series S.

    ive been saying this for about 8 months, everyone talking about 399 for next gen...i knew it would be at least 499. I personally thought 499 was a fair starting point. All electronic increase in price every new generation. cell phone when from 599 to over a grand, tablets when from 499 to 799 plus. Hell even internet prices use to be 50 a month now its closer to 100. lastly, if next gen console keep current gen prices (not happening)you better expect new game prices to creep up a bit as well.

      But what Richard is saying is that they could release for 400 and eat the costs because the Digital Model and store fronts are so succesful now, as well as other factor in regards to component pricing. i disagree with that notion and also, like you, think that it will be more than 400.
      In reality the pressure is on MS as they are the spare tire of the console busyness right now. Even if the initiative to purchase studios left and right pans out well, it would take more than half a generation to see any important reutrns on that investment. Only when the migration to "on demand streaming videogame services" is embraced by the mayority of consumers is when MS would be dominating the videogame busyness.

    There's another scenario where Lockhart might exist despite pricing and cost of Series X not being an issue: As a pure cloud server. xCloud needs both a 1080p and a 4K solution. It makes little sense to put expensive Series X server blades into the cloud - when for the same cost you can put two 1080p/60 Lockharts in there. I suppose xCloud will similar to Stadia have a free (with purchase) 1080p solution based on Lockhart and a paid 4K stream based on Series X. Lockhart could be just that, a device that was never meant to launch alongside Series X, but one purely for the cloud. Curiously enough there doesn't seem to be a Lockhart devkit, leading me to believe that the process is indeed fully automatic and Lockhart runs everything at a quarter the resolution. At 4 TF vs 12 TF it does seem to have overhead compared to how Microsoft achieved a similar jump with One X (which offered 4.2x the performance of One S). Based on that 3 TF should be enough to achieve what Lockhart is supposed to do.

      If it’s all about games then Xbox would have won t console war early on. Xbox launched with more and far better exclusives than the PS4 for around a year or two after launch. PS sold more because it had more power and was $100 cheaper, period. The “Muh games” didn’t become a vocal point until the One X launched because Sony fanboys felt it necessary to damage control for their purchase. PS continues to outsell Xbox now partly because of games but mostly because that’s where everyone’s friends are.
