2000-2004 Impala (8th Gen) Fuel Pump Replacement

  • In this video, our decrepit 2004 Impala, "Fred" has died in the driveway in the dead of winter, and is in need of a fuel pump transplant. The fuel pump had been intermittent in the days prior, only working when the weather was slightly warmer. I was able to diagnose the fuel pump as being the culprit by having someone crank the engine over whilst I sprayed starting fluid into the exposed throttle body. By getting it to start on the starting fluid (and it immediately dying afterward) there was simply no need to hook up a fuel pressure gauge or spark tester. Kind of bass-ackward detective work, but the behavior of the vehicle in the days prior raised my hackles.
    So you fine TH-camrs get to watch as I pop open the access hatch (thank Christ for that "innovation"!) and replace the entire fuel pump module without dropping the gas tank.
    I purchased the fuel pump from Amazon, foregoing a mega-expensive Delphi unit and instead going with the highest rated pump that was reasonably priced. This is a deal where I'm only looking to get a few years out of the pump, as the car is getting rusty and racking up the miles.
    Fuel Pump from Amazon: www.amazon.com...
    I also replaced the Fuel Pressure Regulator and the Fuel Filter at the same time, however the replacement of those 2 items will be in the next video. • 2000-2005 Impala (8th ...
    It has been brought to my attention by several commenters that 2005 model Impalas do not have the access hatch present inside the trunk. I have not been able to confirm yet if this was for all 2005 models, or if there was a specific date range or model availability. I have thusly changed the title of the video to reflect that this should apply to the 2000 through 2004 model years.

    Wow! You tube is a life saver when it comes to car repair in most cases, I was already agonizing about dropping the tank. It only makes sense for there to be an access cover back there. Now I know I can do this job more on the sly in our apartment parking lot lol! This should be a ball with my severe copd I can barely put my shoes on without dying, but it should still be fun. As for sparks and gasoline, we all have done dumb things, we routinely cleaned our hands and tools in a bucket full of gas, I was last one into the shop for lunch break, stuck my greasy ratchet and hands in to almost my elbows when out of the corner of my eye I saw our little vietnamese helper flick his cigarette right into the gas between my arms. it some how didn't blow up. If it had hit the side and sparked the outcome would have been very different. In hind sight I should have broken both his arms, I was barely 18 and just thought it was a bad joke. Way later I woke up to the fact that that kid really tried to kill me, I still shudder to think of it.

    • @CertifiedShadetree
      @CertifiedShadetree  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would suspect so. The wires on the side of the pump assembly that run from the top harness connector to the sensor are tiny and fragile, and might've broken off. Also the 2 little "fingers" on the pivot of the sensor might not be making contact (or they're broken off.) If your old sensor one was working, you might be able to swap it over, assuming you kept the old pump assembly.

    • @CertifiedShadetree
      @CertifiedShadetree  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      11:56 I show the float for the gauge, and at 14:04 I show how it moves. If you look closely you can see there's a "grid" with 2 wires poking out of it. The other side that the float arm is attached to has 2 little fingers on it that rides along the grid and sends the signal to the gauge to show the fuel level. What tends to happen is the 2 little fingers break off, causing the gauge not to read properly. You could purchase just the repair kit to fix the gauge, but you still have to remove the fuel pump to access it. I say just spend the money on a new fuel pump instead, since it's a good possibility you'll need to replace it soon anyway..

Could be a deal where the 3.4 has the hatch and the 3.8 doesn't. @@CertifiedShadetree 05 Impala with 3.8l here. No access panel as the previous commentor said. Cut out is there, but it's welded. No bolts. So either risk blowing up the vehicle and making your own, or drop the tank. My impala is a Vin K model to be exact. (Police package.) So it's a 2005 Impala, 3.8l, Vin K model. There's absolutely no way around dropping the tank unless you make your own panel as I said. I literally JUST got done (about 30 minutes ago) taking all the trunk lining out, spare tire, etc. Again I see where the access panel should be. But absolutely no way to open it without cutting it. And considering my issue is EVAP P0446, wouldn't be wise for me to cut anything around the gas tank. So it means finding a mechanic friend with nice jacks and dropping tank. (I hate working on cars that are lifted up without a proper lift. As I've had a death in the family due to not being absolutely safe with jacks. Jacks/jack stands make me fucking nervous but I'm shit broke and can't afford a shop mechanic to fix the issue.)
      PS: I already replaced the Vapor Canister Vent Solenoid right near the gas cap. So it's either Fuel sensor, or Vapor Canister Purge Solenoid.

      @@xPreatorianx1I should just change the model years in this video to 2000-2004. May I suggest buying an electric sheet metal nibbler? You could carefully drill a hole away from the "hump" and use the nibbler to cut around the perimeter of the hump, therefore avoiding any sparks or any danger of jacking the car up. I actually did this before on an old S-10 Blazer (and ended up having to cut out a cross-bar that ran directly above the fuel pump!!) I bought a 1ft square piece of sheetmetal and riveted it back in place over the hole I cut out. Come to think of it, a pair of tin snips would work too, but it would be very tedious...
