Thanks Dr. Li, especially for challenging the myth about smoke point. I am an olive oil producer in the Sacramento Valley of California, and I have a couple of comments. First of all, the polyphenol content does not particularly depend on the variety of olive; the main variables are fruit maturity and stress. You can make an oil with a very high polyphenol content from olives if they are harvested green in October. Come back to the same tree in January when the fruit is black and ripe and it will make an oil low in polyphenols. The other main factor is stress. Many plants respond to stress by making secondary compounds--polyphenols, alkaloids, terpenes, etc. For an olive tree, stress usually is lack of water. Trees that are heavily irrigated will make an oil with low polyphenol content. I irrigate sparingly through the summer, and end irrigation in August so that during September the fruit is building up polyphenols.
Most olive groves are a mix of varieties; this insures good pollination and good fruiting. Of course it is possible to make a monovarietal oil from a diverse grove, but there is nothing wrong with blends. I grow 16 varieties of olives; I usually make two or three monovarietal oils (Taggiasca, Frantoio, Coratina), and the rest of the fruit is blended.

In 2016 i had a cardiac calcium score of 9, then in December 2023, in preparation for an upcoming surgery, i had a score of zero. IDK if the difference is really significant or not, but if it is, i was attributing the change in scores to the increased olive oil intake I've been having. I make my own salad dressing with olive oil so i can avoid buying commercial salad dressings full of soybean or canola oils.

After reading about years of scandals regarding cheap vegetable oils being added to "Extra Virgin Olive Oil" to boost profits, I switched to Made In USA California Olive Grove olive oil. California has stringent testing and certification requirements for olive oil and the 100% California product is broadly available in the USA ... I buy mine at Walmart, but most grocery stores seem to carry it as well.
On a different note, prices for ALL olive oils seem to have jumped up by 30% in the last few months. This is not simple inflation, there was some kind of crop problem and supply and demand showed their usual relationship.
How many grams are in 3 Tbsp? I consume between 20 and 30 grams a day in divided doses (mixed into a protein shake).

Yeah...but its 41 cals a teaspoon. So thats 123cals a tablespon. So thats 369 cals for 3 tablespoons. A heck of a lot of cals for someone calorie counting on 1000 cals a day. Almost a quarter of my food allowance? So I'm unlikely to do this at all. Suggest something better for dieters and calorie counters please.

I agree. Sometimes researchers know a little too much and cannot give practical guidance. If you want more polyphenol than eat berries. Hi myself take a maximum of 2 teaspoons a day in my food. I should say that’s what I cook with.

EXACTLY. You have to look at your total intake. Not just add a whopping amount of calories and fat and think it's ok. It's not ok, you have to make sure you are having a balanced diet and not overdoing it on the fat intake per day.

Most people in the Mediterranean eat even more than this and it’s considered one of the healthiest diets in the world. If you’re still believing healthy fats makes you fat you are not up to date. You might as well still refer to the food pyramid.

I have read somewhere that the best and the healthiest olives are the black olives from Greece only. (don't know anymore where I read this, but it seemed very trustworthy).
Reason : the olives in Greece are always ripened on the tree. From all other countries you cannot be sure, because the legislation is not restricted, they very often pick the olives while they are not ripe yet (green). When you buy black olives there is a chance they are ripened later in an unhealthy unnatural way with chemical stuff. Only in Greece this is forbidden. Then you can be sure they have ripened by the sun.
I am not sure if this info comes from a reliable source....

Dr Michael Greger says olive oil is highly overrated and unnecessary, that the studies actually point to the plants that were being consumed and not actually just the oil...you are better off to eat the olives not the oil, but to be mindful of the sodium content, so a small serving goes a long way and you get all the benefits of the WHOLE OLIVE. WHOLE FOODS...WHOLE OLIVES...MAKES SENSE RIGHT?! We are only meant to have x number of calories, fat and saturated fat per day tailored to our own individual goals and current weight - I cannot spare 3 TBSP worth of oil in order to have a balanced diet and to hit my nutrition targets and not over consume fat intake, especially saturated fat which olive oil contains.

Please cite the scientific data on beneficial effect of olive oil (not hydroxytyrosol or oleocamphol ) on the heart. Not the studies comparing olive oil to saturated or polyunsaturated fat or SAD.
Any comparison with whole plant based diet (about 10% fat) and no processed food.
Over thousand year olive trees have been destroyed by Israelis occupying Palestine.

Costco's Kirkland brand extra virgin olive oil is always in the group of top olive oils. Both the regular extra virgin olive oil and their Italian extra virgin olive oil are excellent. I have been using both of those for 40 years...

I watch a large number of videos about cooking - often vegan cooking - as I am dairy intolerant, and a high proportion of my diet is plant based. It amazes me that there is evidently a body of people who claim that the healthiest way to eat is 'oil free', and yet I see them merrily squirting all manner of shop-bought sauces into their recipes, or serving beautiful plant burgers in a crappy white bun 🤪. If they stopped demonising healthy oils like EVOO, and paid more attention to avoiding the array of additives in their sauces and white refined bread, I'd be more convinced by their healthy eating credentials!

    • @lizcole6813
      @lizcole6813 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

I agree. Many low fat or fat free products are full of ultra processed additives which are very harmful to health. I'm not medically trained , but I've heard and seen enough evidence to know that healthy fats are essential in a balanced diet.
