My wife and I were invited to Rome back in 2006 to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Pontifical Swiss Guard. We walked straight into the Pantheon no problem. Our group also had a private guided tour of the Sistine Chapel and a wonderful dinner at the Castel Sant'Angelo, the mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian and his family. Good times.
Nothing can prepare you for how busy Rome is unfortunately! Was pretty much as busy for me in November last year "off-season". I think this is how it will be going forward in many cities across the world owing to the effects of social media and mass tourism.
Still lovely though, glad to see you were in awe of the Pantheon as I was. Your words ring true, we have gone backwards.

Rome is a beautiful city and therefore there are plenty of tourists everywhere. You need to prepare for your trip and buy tickets online in advance if you don't want to stand in long lines at ticket offices. You should also have some knowledge about the city to avoid tourist traps.

The shower head monologue shows the rapid degradation of a man's mind when a day continues to not go as planned, funny though. I'm only 11 minutes in but this is an enjoyable video so far, despite just about everything messing up.
