I really like your video but I NEED to add some information (with my poor english, I'm sorry)... little things that sometimes even romans (like me) don't understand 🤣 1- We do have coffee sit at a table but just for a date with friends, for work, ecc. in the morning or in the evening, before the "aperitivo" time. In these cases we can spend hours sit inside or outside the bar. 2- the menu written with chalk is mostly for old "trattorie". But actually most of the restaurants write the "menu/dishes of the day" on a board. 3- a pizza very close to the "pepperoni" is the "Diavola". It's a classic pizza for us: a margherita with spicy salame on top (diavola=devil). Pizza with regular salame it's not a thing. 3- not all the best gelato is covered. Probably it should be..... but most of the best gelaterie in Rome show all the flavours. But it's right, if you see a very big mountain of fluo pistacchio... think twice before to enter. 4- dinner time with friends start at 20.30/22.00 and end when you are wasted of food. 5- house wine in a jug it's not always good........ better choose a good italian wine in a bottle from the wine list. Just ask the waiter for help.

Trastevere is a great area to go to in the evening. Over the river, it’s away from the main tourist area and the restaurants are often very traditional and surprisingly cheap. It’s a lovely area of old cobbled streets, great atmosphere, highly recommended.
Yes, such a great area to eat! If you look closely you might even notice some familiar streets from Trastevere during the segment where we talk about eating in more local neighborhoods ;)
Very good advice. I would add: 1. Ask a local (hotel desk clerk, concierge, tour guide, a cab driver (our first evening meal in Rome years ago. Still one of the best meals in Italy. I think he took it as a personal challenge)). Ask: where can I/we eat well? 2. Don’t order dolce, after dinner coffee/ liquors together as is common in US. There is an order to the meal. Dessert, then coffee or tea, perhaps a degustivo after that. You will almost always have to ask for the check. Bringing the check to the table before you ask for it is usually considered rude behavior on the part of the waiter. 3. Do not overlook caffetterias especially for lunch. Walked into one in Sienna. We were the only non-Italians in the place. The food was freshly cooked, flavorful and very reasonably price. You will usually be welcomed. Also ate well at a caffetteria at Leonardo da Vinci airport when waiting for our home flight. Please don’t stress out about looking like a tourist. It can’t be helped. Don’t be rude and you will usually be fine.

Thanks so much for the encouragement! So glad the video was helpful and hopefully you feel more confident traveling to Rome. And can you tell Brett and I LOVE traveling;)
The dishes I can’t miss in Rome are bucatini all’amatriciana (thick long tubular pasta with a piquant tomato sauce made with guanciale, white wine & pecorino), pistachio pesto (you can also buy jars of it to bring home) or coniglio alla cacciatore - rabbit with a really beautiful white wine, chilli, garlic & rosemary sauce. All of these are easy to find in Rome and usually beautifully prepared. I find American Italian food very difficult cos it’s so heavy & creamy/cheesy by comparison. My favourite Trastevere restaurants have closed in recent years though 😔
I’ve been to Italy seven times and I’ve never seen gelato covered in steel containers! And I hand had some fantastic gelato. You are right about the colors. Pistachio should be white.
Glad you enjoyed some tasty gelato! There are definitely lots of steel containers. That doesn't mean gelato in other containers is bad, but they often have to add chemicals to keep it from melting. Muted colors are definitely better, though, as you said. Some of the best pistacchio we see is almost a brownish-green color (but definitely not a bright color. Hope you make it back to Italy again soon!!
@@AplinsintheAlps actually they were all steel back then. I never took notice because that’s the way they were. We’re talking twenty years ago. No street food. It was a different world. But I will make sure and stick to the steel ones when I go in October!

Just one thing to add, which I think it can be helpful for many tourists…in Italy we don’t tip the waiter/waitress. It’s not something we culturally do as they have fixed salaries, and if you decide to tip expect some weird looks :)
when we ordered a coffee or beer we would leave a 50 centavo lira on the receite for quicker serveice. Back then it was like a nickle, not sure how you would do it with euros nowadays
But sometimes some of the "middle level price" restaurants ask if you want to leave a tip. After leaving 2 euro tip the waiter was very happy. Its not a lot for us and its a nice gesture in my opinion. Those places live from tourism so its nice to appreciate it ❤

When I lived in Rome ,years ago,I loved the takeaway pizza slices de patate .didn't realise this potato pizza is probably only made in Rome.Imagine my shock when I tried to order one in a Venice restaurant ,and was served a pizza with fries on top of it
I’m going to Rome this spring, but have no clue where to eat. I would really appreciate it if somebody could give me some recommendations for great bakeries, lunch, dinner, or gelato places.
I'm italian and I really hate coperto. But if you think of it, in Italy tipping isn't really such a thing. I'f you want to leave a tip you can of course but it's not a must like in the US. So, instead of paying a tip that is the 20% of your bill you can just pay coperto and that's fantastic for me
Hi Manuel! That's such a great perspective and we totally agree. Plus, taxes are already included in the bill, so we find that dining in Italy is almost ALWAYS a better deal than eating out in the States. Thanks for watching our videos!
Hi there! Many restaurants accept credit cards (although American Express isn't accepted nearly as widely). However, it's not unusual to find a restaurant that only accepts cash, so we recommend always being prepared for that possibility!
About the capuccimo, here we use to eat it for brekfast ( remember that capuccino is essentially coffe with milk foam on top and it's considered a meal): gelato, expecially the one without fruits, it's a meal too, but usually we eat it as "merenda"or instead of a meal... But drink a cappuccino nearby a pizza or a lasagna or any kind of salted meal it's terrible!!!
Thanks u guys! This video was super interested and informative. We are visiting Rome this November and I know it’s a little bit too way early but I cannot help it, I started to digging and exploring everything, from nice restaurants to good rooftop bars. We have been in Italy before (Naples, Genoa) but just 1 day while on a cruise 🚢, this time we are catching another cruise from Civitavecchia and we are staying 4 nights on Rome, we want to go to Florence on that high speed train 🚆 but mainly exploring Rome ❤
Regarding drinking cappuccino with a meal, think of it this way: it's like eating at taco bell while drinking a glass of latte (or cappuccino), pretty weird pairing :) and so why does eating gelato is ok? Because after a meal, it's not that bad and might be a fresh dessert, just like eating ice cream after taco bell! It has a very different flavour, texture and temperature compared to cappuccino! :) And yes, you can have cappuccino in the afternoon, no problem, especially if woke up late!
Fettuccine Alfredo is an Italian dish. It's just made differently in Italy with no cream or but with butter and cheese and some salted pasta water that is emulsified with the pasta(and some cracked pepper if you want some at the end on top of the pasta)
Sounds like you’re describing a dish similar to cacio e pepe, which is tasty! But heavy cream is the base of alfredo sauce, so we think that they’re definitely different!
@@AplinsintheAlps there actually is an authentic Italian fettuccine Alfredo that is literally emulsified with butter and parmesan//pecerino and salted pasta water.
Originally created in the Alfredo alla Scrofa trattoria decades ago. It's basically a burro e parmigiano pasta. But still you don't find it in any trattoria in Rome. However most americans think we usually eat it

I honestly believe that Italians do not understand the concept of bad food. You can get great meals at any price point. I once even got a freshly made risotto as "fast food" at Malpensa airport. The entire country is a culinary dream come true. BTW, I have made 4 trips from Chicago to Italy over the years. A 5th is on my bucket list.

I’m going to Rome this spring, but have no clue where to eat. I would really appreciate it if somebody could give me some recommendations for great bakeries, lunch, dinner, or gelato places.
Trattoria Sora Lella
Nice. Would add: Tipping; splitting bill; table water (gas v flat); cash v CC; allergen code designations on menu.
Thanks for the tips!
I've watched dozens of videos for our up coming trip but I still learnt so many things from yours!
Heading to Rome in a few hours! This is great thank you!
Hope you had a special trip in rome!
I really enjoyed your video. 🤩⭐️
Thanks for Sharing! 👍🏼💕
Greetings from Albania. 🇦🇱
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. We're glad you enjoyed it!
I don't need to read the subtitle to watch this video, well done.
So glad you could understand us clearly!! 👍
Where is that Aperitivo restaurant that you guys highlighted? The one with the awesome buffet spread
What restaurant is that with the gargantuan wine glass please? Thanks.
I feel most of these apply here in Portugal and probably also in Spain and Greece
Good point! They probably apple to most of southern Europe!
Kindly guide me about the cheapest prices food availability in rome
what a great video Love you guys Looking forward to my next trip to Italy
Thanks for taking the time to leave such an encouraging comment!
Rome: The City Where Your Heart Isn’t the Only Thing Stolen!
Hi great video …my husband and I are traveling to Rome do they accept major credit cards In all restaurants ?
That sounds like a fantastic vacation!! And it's never too early to start researching and planning all of the fun activities and adventures :)
Sounds great! My wife and I are going to Rome from NY the first week of Nov!
Going in May 2023 first time !
How awesome! That should be a great time of year to visit!
How do you make reservations in restaurants if you are only going for a few days?
Hi Lucy! We usually just call or stop by earlier in the day or the day before. Usually no need to make reservations far in advance.
However most americans think we usually eat it
Hi Great video! Thank you so much for sharing this, also I want to ask where did u dine in Rome? So I can also make reservations 🥰 thanks in advance x
Great question! We like:
-Nannarella (Trastevere)
-Rimessa Roscioli (Centro)
-Flavio al Velavevodetto ai Quiriti (Prati)
We also made a Rome Food Tour video (th-cam.com/video/GZWZGm1ChpQ/w-d-xo.html), so be sure to check that out if you haven't already. Thanks for watching!
I need that, too! Thanks for the recommendations!!
Great tips for Rome. Any recommendations to have a great Aperitivo in Rome? I'll be staying close to Largo di Torre Argentina in a week's time. Read the blog and were was the pic taken where you had aperitivo
So glad you found this helpful! Happy travels :)
Also, Doppiozeroo in the Testaccio neighborhood is our favorite aperitivo spot :)
An Aperol Spritz is Aperol, Prosecco and Seltzer water. No bitters. Just a heads up!
You're right, but we've always been told that aperol is considered to be a bitter!
I am going to Rome in February, any suggestion for spice lover Indian?
We're not that familiar with Indian restaurants here but let us know if you find a good one!
Ohhh i didnt know about touching food, in a market i picked up a tomato to smell before buying, the woman told me off,😮 where im from we like to feel/ smell before we buy ,her loss, i would have spent alot too
What camera did yall use to film?👀
Can you get decaf coffee in Rome?
Thankyou. It was very informative. I have a question do you guys know where and how to get a rental apartment in rome. Any website or place that i can look up to rent a apartment.
We recommend Airbnb!
Please tell some prices of food and things as you go......
Rome, like a theme park. Been once done that .
How do you find the Aperitivo’s? Is this written anywhere (signs)or do you just kinda luck into them?
You just go to a bar, usually all of them serve aperitivo, however the type of stuzzichini (aperitivo food) served can greatly vary
Could you recommend me about the place you stay in Rome?
If you’re in a group, can you ask for separate bills?
Love the info ... well done! But I'd like to know how you got your Italian citizenship?
Thank you, you're so kind! Jana's family immigrated from Sicily, so she was eligible and then Brett got citizenship through marriage. We wrote a blog about it if you're curious to learn more: aplinsinthealps.com/how-i-gained-italian-dual-citizenship-through-ancestry-dual-us-italian-citizenship/
Is Coperto same as Tips?
If you ask "latte", in Italy you have literally what you have requested, given latte means (just) milk!
Yes, exactly! :) Such fun cultural (and linguistic) differences!
Can we get non-alcoholic drinks at aperitivo time or will we offend them?
No offense. You can get what you want, even a coke. As long as it's not cappuccino or latte macchiato, you are good to go with pretty much anything.
Someone knows the name of the restaurant where they are drinking wine with a huge cup?
