  • The Atomos Shinobi 7 is a pretty awesome piece of gear. Being a 2200nits monitor makes it really easy to see outside and the large 7" screen is a dream to film with. In this video, we talk about if this monitor is a good fit for outdoor adventure filmmaking.

    Great observations about both Shinobi models and the Ninja V. My 5" Shinobi is one of my favourite pieces of kit. I also have the 7" Ninja Inferno and Ninja V+, but the little Shinobi is so light and quiet, I reach for it first unless I need external recording.

      Hi Chris, total amateur question here but what happens to the C70 tech screen autofocus when you have an external monitor like the Shinobi 7? Can you still us it? I have a run and gun setup and really need the touch focus

      @@regnismada4936 For sure Scott beat me to it, it works well together and considering the size of the monitor the focus peaking is great in the field for run and gun situations so pairing those together makes it very convenient for nailing fast focus!

    I'm considering the Shinobi 7. Have the OSEE T7, but it can't handle the DR when shooting in CLOG2 and using a LUT to correct, the highlights wash out on the monitor way before the actual footage does. I don't think Atomos or SMALLHD has that issue.

    • @ScottBell
      @ScottBell  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have the Osee T7 as well. Overall it is an ok monitor but I have had similar experiences with accurate representation of color and DR on it. I definitely trust Atomos products for better representation of color and you just can't beat a nice touchscreen IMO. Thanks for checking out the vid!

    I'm having a heck of a time nailing focus with my LUT7 on my GH5 and E2M4. I am considering the Shinobi 5" or Osee 7". Out of those 2 which has the best (most accurate and easy to see) focus peaking? And which of those 2 do you use now?

    • @ScottBell
      @ScottBell  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Mike, I'm a big fan of the built in focus peaking on the GH5. Hard to say which is better between the Osee and the Shinobi but I like the ease of use of the Shinobi over the Osee monitor. Touchscreen wins every time for me. I use my Shinobi 5" 99% of the time and only bring out the Osee 7" when I need a secondary camera angle I want to monitor from a monitor. Thanks for watching.

    Great video Scott 👍🏻 I have the FX6 and I need such an external monitor, but I am not sure to buy the 5 or 7? With the shinobi 7 I could use sdi with my FX6 😉 what do you think 🤔 audio is not a problem for me 🎥 best cinematic greetings from germany

    • @ScottBell
      @ScottBell  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching. Both are great monitors. If I didn't care about the audio I would probably go with the 7, unless I needed a really small setup to fit in my pack. With my backpack, I can fit the 5 or 7 attached to my camera so would definitely prefer more real estate. You'll also want to consider the extra battery usage of the 7 due to the fans and larger sized screen.

    Hey man! I had a question for you, I saw your other video that you did about the Shinobi 5, and I was curious if you could explain more on how you were monitoring your footage with it? when shooting cLog2, Are you using the built in Rec.709 c70 LUT and sending that into the shinobi? Or are you sending straight LOG to the shinobi and then using a Rec.709 LUT onboard the shinobi itself? I feel like I am not using the shinobi correctly, and I cant seem to find much information in regards to monitoring the footage of the C70 -> Shinobi. I have been sending the pre-corrected footage directly into the shinobi, and I think I have the settings on the shinobi correct? But I am also noticing some color and gama shifts happening when i look at the footage on the shinobi vs the c70's screen.

    • @ScottBell
      @ScottBell  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey, thanks for watching. I am sending a signal directly from the C70 to the Shinobi with the view assist LUT from the camera. The annoying thing is this means that during playback the monitor is just showing a log image. I've loaded the Canon Clog2>Rec709 LUT onto the Shinobi but I find the color representation isn't as accurate as I'd like so have opted to not use it. I think it has something to do with the legalized color range and a mismatch between the C70 and the Shinobi. I know the Ninja V allows you to adjust this setting but I haven't been able to test it.

    Is there a reason the x4 punch in is greyed out? I cant see any option to select it i also have a novice question the monitor looks very different from the LCD im also using the c70 but it looks much more washed out with noticeably less contrast and when the exposure looks fine on the LCD it seems much too bright on the monitor is that normal or is there a way to make it look identical to the LCD?

    • @ScottBell
      @ScottBell  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      4x zoom only works when the camera is outputting a 1080p signal. With 4k output you get access to 1:1 and 2x zoom. I haven't noticed my Shinobi looking particularly washed out. I do find that when I use the Canon provided conversion LUT to go from Clog2 to Rec709 it slightly more contrasty than when I use the built in View Assist LUT that can be sent over the HDMI cable. I'm not sure if you are referring to a unit you own or how it looks in this video. If it's this video that is probably just do to the brightness of the monitoring causing it to be slightly overexposed in my footage. Hope that helps!
