  • City Pool Complex Named for Former Vice President Joe Biden
Biden was a youth lifeguard at the former Prices Run Park pool (today known as Brown Burton Winchester Park); the pool facility was dedicated today as the Joseph R. Biden Jr. Aquatic Center
Former Vice President Joe Biden today returned to the pool facility where he was a lifeguard as a young man for a ceremony naming the Brown Burton Winchester Park pool and poolhouse complex as the Joseph R. Biden, Jr., Aquatic Center. Biden has spoken often about how important it was for him, as a lifeguard at the pool, to build relationships and develop concepts that served him well throughout his career of public service.
The City of Wilmington, largely through the efforts of 3rd District Council Member Zanthia Oliver and former 3rd District Council Member Darius Brown, decided to commemorate the former Vice President’s early years at the pool facility by naming the entire complex in his honor. Through signage unveiled today at the front and rear of the pool bathhouse facility, the complex will now be known as the Joseph R. Biden, Jr., Aquatic Center. The facility was renovated several years ago to become a LEED-certified environmentally reconfigured facility, one of the City’s first efforts to reduce the government’s carbon gas emissions by 20% by the year 2020.
Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki hosted today’s ceremony which included remarks by Council Member Oliver as the district representative, Governor John Carney, Senator Margaret Rose Henry, who also represents the area, and Delaware’s Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester. Also attending the ceremony was Senator Robert Marshall, Representative Helene Keeley and Richard ‘Mouse’ Smith, former NAACP President, who met Joe Biden when he was a lifeguard, leading to a lifelong friendship. City Council Members Va'Shun Turner, Ciro Adams, and Rysheema Dixon were also present for the ceremony at the 26th and Locust Street park.
In addition to the new building signage, a small plaque was affixed to one of the pool's lifeguard chairs designating the chair as the, “Joseph R. Biden, Jr., Lifeguard Chair” ensuring that the values and interpersonal skills developed by the former Vice President during his time as a lifeguard will be memorialized forever at the City pool complex.

They bam together to show everything bad of Trump and hide everything goid. And I do mean the entire internet. And yet… Biden still looks worse. Omg😮 what are we not seeing is what I want to know?!

Like any other person who sees them self as superior, he showed no sensitivity for the kid back then, and still shows none today. I truly hope Corn Pop and his family(If there is one) aren't able to hear this garbage.

What I can't believe is that you think you can speak as if you know what you're talking about when you clearly didn't watch the whole video. If you had you'd realise that two other people told versions of the story before he even spoke and he was just expanding on what they'd been talking about and that the problem wasn't that the kid wasn't wearing a swimming cap, but that he was jumping up and down on the board which was against the pool's safety rules. You also might have heard 22:59 where the former NAACP president called out attitudes like yours.

Here's a cleaned up transcript starting from 25:37.
The point I want to make is: I owe you all. I owe this neighborhood. I learned so, so much. I was a kid from suburbia, I lived out in Mayfield on a split-level home with my Grandpop living with us and in a three-bedroom home of four kids, my grandpa. And folks, when nineteen… it's a whole hundred years ago, but I was a senior in high school, and Presicci he turned out to be a great athlete in in at University of Delaware, but I was runner-up the state scoring championship here in football, I wasn't bad either. And… but I wanted to… I wanted to get more involved. And I realized I live in a neighborhood where I’d have to turn on the television, and I'd see and listen to Dr. King and others, but I didn't know any black people. No, I really didn't. You didn't know any white people either. That's the truth.
So I wanted to work here. And there's my daughter, Ashley. Come on up here Ash. And so what I did was I came down and I... I applied the city of Wilmington for a job and for- I was the only white employee here, and I learned _so much._ I learned so much. I learned that folks that I work with, like Spencer Henry and Lafayette Jackson and a whole range of people - Jamie Rolls - a lot of great, great, great people were my fellow lifeguards there’re 13 of us. I learned that… they treated me… they treated me as an equal - we used to go - in what was not as modern as that - we used to go in the key room, at lunchtime after a free swim, and sit on the floor, because it was nice and cool. And member Boom Boom Cannon and a few other guys who worked here well as well. And we sit there and we talk and they’d ask me questions. Because I _really was_ the only white guy they _really knew._ And they’d ask me questions… about everything- I mean things that I- that startled me.
I remember one time, I won't mention which lifeguard, said do I ”have a jerrycan, a five-gallon can for gasoline?” And I said ”No, I don't”. I said, ”but what’d you need it for?” He said ”I'm going down- we're going down and see my grandma in North Carolina. We can't stop at most gas stations. They won't let us stop at most gas stations.” I learned… I learned a lot. And I learned that… it makes a difference.
This was the diving board area… and I was one of the guards, and they weren’t allowed to swim- it was a three meter board… if you fell off sideways you landed on the dams- the darn cement over there… And Corn Pop was a _bad dude,_ and he _ran_ a bunch of _bad boys._ And I did, yeah, ye- and back in those days, to show you how things have changed… One of the things you had to use if you use pomade in your hair you had to wear a bathing cap.
And so he is up on the board, wouldn't listen, and I said: ”Hey Esther! You! Off the board or I'll come up and drag you off.” Well, he came off. And he said I'll meet you outside- my car- this was mostly these were all public housing behind you. My car- there was a gate out here. I parked my car outside the gate. And I- He said ”I'll be waiting for you.” He was waiting there with three guys and straight razors. Not a joke! There's a guy named Bill Wright-Mouse, the only white guy, and he did all the pools. He was the mechanic. And I said ”What am I going to do?” He said ”Come down here in the basement, where mechanics- where all the pool filler is… You know the chain- there used to be a chain that went across the deep end. And he cut off a six-foot length of chain, and he pulled up, and he said "You walk out, with that chain… and you walk out of car and say 'You may cut me, man, but I'm going to wrap this chain around your head.'” I said ”You’re kidding me”. He said ”No, if you don't- don't come back” and he was right! So I walked out with the chain… and I walked up to my car and they had, they had most days- remember the straight razors, you had to bang them on the curb, get ’em rusty, put them in a rain barrel, get ’em rusty… And I looked at him. But I was smart then. I said, first of all I said ”When I tell you get off the board, you get off the board and I'll kick you out again, but I shouldn't have called you, Esther Williams, I apologize for that.” ”I apologize” but I didn't know that that apology was gonna work. He said ”You apologize to me?” I said ”I apologize, but not for throwing you out, but I apologize for what I said.” He said ”Okay”, closes straight razor and my heart began to beat again.
I came down here because I remember the first bumper sticker I saw that made me aware. When I was in law school proudly for Holloway probably for your dad first African-American state senator in the state of in the state of Delaware. Everything about…
And by the way you know I sit on the stand. And it get hot, I got lot- I got hairy legs… that, that, that, turn… blonde in the sun. And the kids used to come up and reach in the pool, and rub my leg down, so it was straight, and then watch the hair… come back up again. They’d look at it. So I learned about roaches, I learned about kids jumping on my lap - I loved kids jumping on my lap - and I tell you what… the men - they are now all men - the guys I worked with down here - and they're all guys at the time - they're all good men, most of them made a lawful lot of themselves and Earl Larkin had a rough time.

In plain site & we voted for him to lead our country as President. I am just as guilty as you & my regrets just keep mounting. Never will I make that mistake again. No more main street Media, none of them. I am ashamed & disgusted of what, in particular CNN & MSNBC, had me believing about myself & my country. Only independent journalists that have a record of integrity for me from now on, if I even have that opportunity again.

Is this the place where he killed Cornpop, and where he started calling Blacks the N word? Does anyone know what happened to Esther, after joe went up to the diving board and pulled her down by her hair?

I find it hard to understand what Mouse or whatever his name is is saying, about Corn Pop and all that. I can't make out the enunciation. It takes a while. It's worth it: good, interesting words. But hard to decipher.

    • @cockeyedoptimista

Yeah, I had a hard time understanding Mr. Richard "Mouse" Smith too! It seemed like he was missing some teeth? I don't know. But yes, after a few listens I could make it out more.
I don't understand, though, what he meant by, If a roaches jump[s] on you... If you get a mayonnaise jar filled with Kool-Aid.." ("mahnase")..
I get that a nice big jar is a good way to slug down some ice-cold Kool-Aid. But is that related to the roaches? I'm thinking that's a way to lure cockroaches off of you? But I guess he's just telling Joe, just be chill about all these things. This is our environment and our culture. Brush off the roach. Get a big mayonnaise jar and slurp a cool drink out of it. And tell a little kid that everything's going to be alright: they might be worried and want reassurance.
(He went to a lot of trouble for Joe.
I never saw a cockroach till I lived in the city after college. (Could that be?) ...)
