Rich or poor, most people agree that wealth disparities exist. Thomas Sowell discusses the origins and impacts of those wealth disparities in his new book, Discrimination and Disparities in this episode of Uncommon Knowledge.
Sowell explains his issues with the relatively new legal standard of “disparate impact” and how it disregards the American legal principle of “burden of proof.” Sowell and Robinson discuss how economic outcomes vary greatly across individuals and groups and that concepts like “disparate impact” fail to take into account these variations.
They chat about the impact of nuclear families on the IQs of individuals, as studies have not only shown that children raised by two parents tend to have higher levels of intelligence but also that first-born and single children have even higher intelligence levels than those of younger siblings, indicating that the time and attention given by parents to their children greatly impacts the child’s future more than factors like race, environment, or genetics. Sowell talks about his book in which he wrote extensively about National Merit Scholarship finalists who more often than not were the first-born or only child in a family.
Sowell and Robinson go on to discuss historical instances of discrimination and how those instances affected economic and social issues within families, including discrimination created by housing laws in the Bay Area. They discuss unemployment rates, violence, the welfare state in regards to African American communities, and more.

Thomas Sowell is such a political pawn for Paleo Conservatives and Right-wing proxies...At frame @10:50 he was meet with question about the cost of discrimination, and disparities??..Instead of going to something directly during his time, like Jim Crow and de jure segregation??Where he can point out, directly quantitive and qualitative things..But instead mentions South Africa Apartheid, about jobs under the Group Areas Act, and its vagueness to certain racial groups..Then @ 37:11 he is asked about an article in the Alantic, pertaining the discussion on the period of Tran-Alantic Slavery and suggestion of reparations??.It matter not if he support the talk about reparations, but he answered in a typical ambiguous roundabout way the World History of Slavery, ..Which has no direct connection to forced de jure/de facto segregation, voting disfranchisement and lost generational wealth (see: Great Migration) to the North, under the "reconstruction amendments" 13th, 14th and 15th..For heaven sake, his family is from Gastonia, North Carolina..But he goes to that???

I love the fact that he laughs about being a Marxist in his youth! The old adage is really a truism - If You Are Not a Liberal at 25, You Have No Heart. If You Are Not a Conservative at 35 You Have No Brain. - youth has the luxury of believing in idealism(s), yet, with age you get the wisdom of realism, and how life really works. Dr. Sowell is so wise and beyond the average, that he’s an anomaly. The Marxist youth of this age are so extreme and confident in their self-righteous ignorance that they will run this country over a cliff! Only in hindsight in 10 to 20 years will they see the folly of their idealism.

The Dr. Is a genius. Why? Because instead of being another black man, who uses race to justify his position as an exponent and saviour, of the underprivileged minority. , He can actually explain, in a sophisticated yet simple way, that data over time proves that being black is not an obstacle to being a success.

I respect Thomas Sowell a lot and agree with him on a lot of things, but a number of the assertions he makes here seem very weak. Simply because, as an example, a number of negative social trends developed after the sixties *and* a set of policies he disapproves of (the welfare state) was introduced in the sixties, it does *not* follow that one was the proximate cause of the other. He's pretending this is a univariate space somehow. The sixties also saw the decline of the role of strict religion in society, rock-n-roll, and the sex revolution. On what basis are all of these variables excluded? He is at his best demanding proof for causative relationships advocates of social engineering claim exist but can not provide; here, he seems to err in the same way they do - pick an ideological position, apply confirmation bias to datasets et voila - 'proof'.

@13:59 Black wealth increased faster than other areas, in spite of measures designed to keep them down? I don't have to be a scholar to know that 10 cents is more than 0. So if everyone else was getting paid, and I wasn't... then I start getting paid, it gives the impression that I am gaining faster than other workers.
    That's just basic math.
If I'm getting paid 10 cents and the other guy is getting a dollar... if I go up to 50 cents, that's 500%.
Then my coworker gets mad that I got a 500% raise... even though he doesn't know I actually make less than him, before and after the raise.
Amazing how that works Mr. Sowell... smdh.
And, why hire the white guy at $1 when I can hire 10 blacks at 10 cents.
    Maybe I need a fellow...

I must give my chief credit to Thomas Sowell and Ben Shapiro for changing my mind and directing me to be a conservative. Their level-headedness, intellect, and adherence to facts is a breath of fresh air. God bless ‘em!

I'm a huge fan of Sowell, and I think he is a real gem of our times. But the birth control pill was introduced in the 1960's right? So in my mind you would attribute the increase in venereal diseases to the increased sexual freedom that women had, not to the increase in sex education. More sex equals higher disease rates right? Someone correct me if I am wrong, because Sowell is infinitely more intelligent than I am, and I am certain he thought about that.

His point was not exactly that sex education resulted in higher rate of stds per say, but just that it was a misdiagnosis of the problem and that the cultural trends with came along at that time with sex ed were doing great harm.

I love my Dad (he's no longer with us). There's only one man in my entire life where I thought, "I wish he was my father.", Thomas Sowell. The idea that I could still learn from my Dad while I'm in my 50's sounds amazing. I'm probably wrong! There's more to being a Dad than teaching. But I honestly had that thought.

i love thomas sowell but his comment about bangladesh breaking away from pakistan beacause of its leaders is wrong . it broke away because of pakistan imposed its language on the bangladeshis and banned their mothertongue bengali to be used in offical transactions.
they also collected heavy taxes from bengalis and used it in pakistan for its welfare and military purposes.
the split proves more about big govt overreach in peoples lives than minority leaders in bangladesh wanting separate country for their own benefit.
    rare mistake by thomas sowell.
some one correct if i am mistaken .

"In 1966, Awami League leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman announced the six point movement in Lahore. The movement demanded greater provincial autonomy and the restoration of democracy in Pakistan. Rahman was indicted for treason during the Agartala Conspiracy Case after launching the six point movement. He was released in the 1969 uprising in East Pakistan, which ousted Ayub Khan from the presidency"
Three points from the 6-point plan proposed by Mujibur Rahman
"Two separate, but freely convertible currencies for two wings should be introduced; or if this is not feasible, there should be one currency for the whole country, but effective constitutional provisions should be introduced to stop the flight of capital from East to West Pakistan. Furthermore, a separate Banking Reserve should be established and separate fiscal and monetary policy be adopted for East Pakistan.
The power of taxation and revenue collection should be vested in the federating units and the federal centre would have no such power.
East Pakistan should have a separate military or paramilitary force, and Navy headquarters should be in East Pakistan."
Ayub Khan was already a controversial figure in West Pakistan at the time, and the Bengalis were the largest ethnic group in Pakistan as a whole. While language absolutely played a vital role, the events after February 22, 1952 led to article 214(1) of the Pakistan constitution, where Urdu and Bengali were both declared national languages. Ayub Khan ensured that the interests of the two states remained different, which East Pakistan leaders rightly would not accept.
I do not see Dr. Sowell's error?

Although East Pakistan accounted for a slight majority of the country's population,[46] political power remained in the hands of West Pakistanis. Since a straightforward system of representation based on population would have concentrated political power in East Pakistan, the West Pakistani establishment came up with the "One Unit" scheme, where all of West Pakistan was considered one province. This was solely to counterbalance the East wing's votes.
The East Pakistanis observed that the West Pakistani establishment would swiftly depose any East Pakistanis elected Prime Minister of Pakistan, such as Khawaja Nazimuddin, Mohammad Ali Bogra, or Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy. Their suspicions were further aggravated by the military dictatorships of Ayub Khan (27 October 1958 - 25 March 1969) and Yahya Khan (25 March 1969 - 20 December 1971), both West Pakistanis. The situation reached a climax in 1970, when the Bangladesh Awami League, the largest East Pakistani political party, led by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, won a landslide victory in the national elections. The party won 167 of the 169 seats allotted to East Pakistan, and thus a majority of the 313 seats in the National Assembly. This gave the Awami League the constitutional right to form a government. However, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto (a former Foreign Minister), the leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party, refused to allow Rahman to become the Prime Minister of Pakistan.[47] Instead, he proposed the idea of having two Prime Ministers, one for each wing. The proposal elicited outrage in the east wing, already chafing under the other constitutional innovation, the "One Unit scheme". Bhutto also refused to accept Rahman's Six Points.
the fight of bangaladeshis was more if political rather than economic.
