Lyrics:
Saturday night and the moon is out
I wanna head on over to the Twist and Shout
Find a two-step partner and a Cajun beat
When it lifts me up I'm gonna find my feet
Out in the middle of a big dance floor
When I hear that fiddle wanna beg for more
Gonna dance to a band from a-Lou'sian' tonight
Well I never have wandered down to New Orleans
Never have drifted down a bayou stream
But I heard that music on the radio
And I swore some day I was gonna go
Down Highway 10 past Lafayette
To Baton Rouge and I won't forget
To send you a card with my regrets
'Cause I'm never gonna come back home
Saturday night and the moon is out
I wanna head on over to the Twist and Shout
Find a two-step partner and a Cajun beat
When it lifts me up I'm gonna find my feet
Out in the middle of a big dance floor
When I hear that fiddle wanna beg for more
Gonna dance to a band from a-Lou'sian' tonight
They got a alligator stew and a crawfish pie
A golf storm blowin' into town tonight
Livin on the delta's quite a show
They got hurricane parties every time it blows
And here up north it's a cold cold rain
And there ain't no cure for my blues today
Except when the paper says: Beausoleil is coming into town
Baby let's go down
Saturday night and the moon is out
I wanna head on over to the Twist and Shout
Find a two-step partner and a Cajun beat
When it lifts me up I'm gonna find my feet
Out in the middle of a big dance floor
When I hear that fiddle wanna beg for more
Gonna dance to a band from a-Lou'sian' tonight
Bring your mama, bring your papa, bring your sister too
They got lots of music and lots of room
When they play you a waltz from 1910
You gonna feel a little bit young again
Well you learned to dance with your rock'n'roll
You learned to swing with a do-si-do
But you learn to love at the fais-so-do
When you hear a little Jolie Blon
Saturday night and the moon is out
I wanna head on over to the Twist and Shout
Find a two-step partner and a Cajun beat
When it lifts me up I'm gonna find my feet
Out in the middle of a big dance floor
When I hear that fiddle wanna beg for more
Gonna dance to a band from a-Lou'sian' tonight
If you don't feel good after hearing this song you have a problem.
Exactly! If your toes aren't tapping during this, you need to check your pulse or at least make sure you're still breathing!
Happy early birthday tomorrow Friday and weekend
Hahaha.I think so
Depression effects 1 in 10 people; I need a waltz from 1910 to make me feel young again.
you got that right
It says something when she can roll it all out and you can still understand every word she sings....she was indeed underrated.
\>0.l; @!
That's because she's a real live musician performing, and not a "performer" pretending to be a musician.
@@russs7574 And she wrote all her own stuff. Truly a unique artist in every respect!

This is one of my favorite. She not only does a wonderful job of singing; she is enjoying the music with her actions and her smile.

I’m 66. I’ve heard a lot of music in many genres. Who knows how many songs ‘I really like’. This is one that I’d drop everything to listen to and it’s even better here thanks to MCC’s delightful energy and appearance.
I am 72 and love this song!😊
100% Agree with you!!
Ich bin 73 und genieße die Musik 🎶 immer noch
I'm from Texas ... she is from New Jersey. This confirms what I have long believed ... Cajun Music is Contagious ! ! !
You catch it on yo fingers, and it craws on up y'sleeves.
And your temperature can fluctuate...from diggy-diggy-high to diggy-diggy-low.😉
Still fun!!!
I'm never gonna go back hoooaaam...
What a woman !!
This may be the best country song ever recorded!?
That’s cause it’s Cajun 😏
It is impossible to be sad when you have this song on.
You will be dancing like this in heaven. I think of all that Jesus did for us...as I listen to this. He did this not only for our life...but He did it for our joy to be full. Yes...life has a lot of heartache...and hurt at times, but when God pulls you out...He wants you to dance for joy !!! Yes !
Words of Wisdom. TY.
My husband has passed now. But he used to love to hear her music and signing. ❤️

Such positive affirming energy.
Does that mean she's a good singer?
@@Sparky-ov1ot she is great at everything because she is all about love.

A shame they didn't highlight him more since he carries the song. Megan Breaux
Yeah
She is shining bright on this song because Michael Doucet is playing music behind her and she is giving respect to cajun music and Beausoleil.
He deserves some major attention here since she sings about the 'fiddle' and he adds so much of the 'cajun flavor' to the song instrumentally!
Michael Doucet and his band have been to our Folk Festival in Richmond, Va. at least twice in the last 10 years and they are AMAZING! No one can sit still when they play :)
Im a born and raised Texan but I married a Louisiana boy so I've come to love this kinda music.
Adorable
My dad is the accordion player for Beausoleil. I love this song.

She sang this song for my father on his birthday at church street station in Orlando FL.thank you Mary. God bless you!
Being bred and raised in Louisiana, this is one song that captures the essence of that state culture. It happens in backyards and bayous all through the state and boy do i miss it. Stuck elsewhere atm, but plan to go back and retire.

@@davidbrown9914 "Well, I NEVER HAVE wandered down to New Orleans, I NEVER HAVE drifted down a bayou stream."
She says it in the song. It was written about a place called the Twist and Shout, in Bethesda Maryland. BUT- to be fair, it's about how that place made her _wish_ she could go to Louisiana. ;)
So true and so hard to believe😮😅
Can't get more American than this. Beautiful, and everybody is smiling, laughing...having the time of their lives!
It’s a music video. Not real life.
One of the best song writers in my world, sensitive, thoughtful.... and she can rock when it's required. Love you Mary!
She is the ABSOLUTE. BEST. There is no superior songwriter. Just saw her here in New Orleans this weekend, and it was a religious experience!

Real, honest music with no gimmicks, no toxic lyrics, no street filth lingo, & no autotune. Just real TALENT "On Loan From Goddddddd!" ❤️
Well stated!!
So true! Country music has lost its way. All the men sound alike with a fake southern accent, singing about Friday or Saturday night, a beer and a pickup truck. Don’t get me wrong, all these subjects have a place in music but let’s get real! Song after song, singer after singer it’s the same. Where is the real talent? Where is the heartfelt realness? Where is country music?
@@toddgiaro7657 I had a friend in college ('68-'72) that said he could sum up every country song ever written in one phrase: "My true love found a new love!" LOL
@@dcinpa1134 You know the joke, right? What do you get when you play a country and western record backwards? You get your truck back, you get your dog back, you get your wife back.
@@toddgiaro7657 Very True Todd, I think that is by design, too. I think the powers that be are pushing these weak songs, which have no heart and soul to them, no meaning, no feelings, nothing at all. Like you said, they'll talk about trucks, and drinking beer, partying, and girls... just a bunch of meaningless excess. Not that there's anything wrong with happy, uplifting music, but the country music of today is just frivolous. There's nothing deep or spiritual about it. They're trying to make us all into shallow consumers who just shut our minds off and never think critically about anything. They don't want us to question their narratives or disobey their constant manipulation of society so they can shape it in whatever image they want, which is a weak, brainless, malleable populace who serves the elites and doesn't rock the boat.
She won the Grammy for it. That speaks for itself.
This is a fantastic song!
It's 2024, but this is still one of my most favorite songs! She is such an energetic entertainer! Really gets the crowd and band energized! Lovin' it!!!
Now THATS real Country
I was born in Louisiana and lived in a few different places and eventually moved back home. Louisiana will always hold a special place in my heart
Same here.
Became a Marine in 66, stayed elsewere for 40 years, came home in 2006. All my family are here. Cajun is a state of mind (mine).
At 78 this is a great song for getting in 10,000 step. Love this song and Mary Chapin Carpenter.
I am from La. and this is great stuff. Carpenter is a great talent and her alto voice is a dream. The nineties were a great time for country music. Today we are in the desert.

We all need to dance like that again, enough of this fist pump crap.
Mary Carpenter really is ever so breathtaking as standing in there will never be another one to replace her in any way. Her true talent and Cajun ways make me one from Oklahoma certainly Envy Louisiana. She will never be forgotten.
@@tuckerkitchens2512 She's no Cajun though, she's from New Jersey. That much is evident by the fact she's conflating "New Orleans" and "Cajun" when there is nothing Cajun about New Orleans.
She has written so many beautiful songs.
Love this and she's so feisty.
It's all connected - and Mary Chapin Carpenter literally leaps into the beating heart of joy, of dance, of celebration. How we need that spirit just now (2021 getting under way). The Bible speaks of a 'weight of glory' - that doesn't mean it's dull or heavy. This is what brought the Cajuns from Canada to the bayous, and what can raise us from the doldrums of CoViD and family feuding to a new day. All y'all spoke truth - let me just say 'amen' to Mike Rayner: 'Well, this was fun!' [Do all y'all from outside the Gulf understand 'hurricane parties'? Love her chuckle at the end....].
Texas, and Louisiana both have the best.... country, metal, sports, food, and everything between! I don't need go ever leave Texas, and Louisiana!
This was back when country was plain and simple, an escape from reality, a marvelous thing.
I miss those days very much!

I had no idea she was a Yankee till just now!!
I never get tired of hearing this song. Mary looks like she is having so much fun.
They don't make music like this anymore. NOTHING coming out of Nashville in the last decade can even hold a candle to this.
you said it. I was only 1 when this was released but I remember hearing it alot in the early 90s. I mean there's a couple good songs today but pretty much every one on my itunes playlist ranges from the late 70s to 1999, with a couple from maybe 2006-2007. A majority of the songs are from 1990-1994. There's so many singers out there today that I just do not like at all, like Rascal Flatts for example. It's too "pop" now.
Damn right. Ole Mary knew how to sing and have fun doing it
Raging Ranter you just don't know how wrong 100% of every word in your statement is. There ain't a single word in that comment you posted that is even the slightest bit close to true
Stephen R bitch today's country is so far from pop it ain't even funny. It's literally the definition of true country. That person may of "said it" but they "said it" wrong. Not a damn single word in their statement is anywhere close to true

This was second song in her encore in her excellent show in Scottsdale. Everyone was up & dancing. Only thing missing was BeauSoleil.
I am happy to see that she still is performing. I got to see her years ago in Portland. Excellent!!!!

Meh....a few notches above Marcy D'Arcy and Vicki Lawrence (c. 1973).
Something about this song. It gets my toes tapping like no other. Hard to believe an Ivy League educated Jersey girl can be so connected to music that by all rights SHOULD be foreign to her. But I swear listening to and watching her I'd swear she was a born in the bayou coonass. I've heard it said that music is music, and any musician can cross genres. I guess Mary Chapin Carpenter proves that point.

Thanks. I'll do it.
Tom Swinburn Cool.
Tom Swinburn I found something very interesting. Now I don't have a hearing problem (just some ringing). So I just made a playlist (TINNITUS RELIEF). If you have any ringing in the ears from listening to loud music over the years - it might help you. But first, set your computer volume at half way (and the volume on the videos at half way). Then listen (with a decent headphone set) through the playlist (I only went about half way through with the 12,000 Hz video) and so far at 40 min. the ringing is just starting to come back (but still lower than before I did this). Note, before I found this channel with these videos, I did go online to a site called online tone generator - and I could hear up to approximately 11,000 Hz. So I thought it best to listen to videos above 11,000 Hz (you may have to listen to other videos though with your test results). Note, the tone generator on that site goes up too fast (so you will have to start / stop it a lot to pinpoint where your hearing ends). And note, I did not listen to music today - before I did this. So I started the playlist at my "ringing baseline." Try it - if needed.
+MrBlueSkyMrNight
Luckily no tinnitus for me. (yet) But I'll keep your prescription in mind.
Just imagine if the world got along with everyone the way they do in a country bar where they are all dancing??!❤
Why have I never heard of her before? OMG, I would drive across the country to see her perform live. Absolutely amazing.

I'm a metalhead. Always have been. But for span in 1996-2001 or so I was heavily into country. So my experience is limited but stuff like this brings so many memories back. Love it. LOVE. IT!
That's quite common. I grew up in Southern Louisiana and every metalhead I knew also liked country. I think it's the guitar. Country guitarists can wail. 😁
Well said!
This is from 90's? I couldn't decipher from the clothes if this was 80's or 90's. I love her voice.
That's because you just can't go wrong with 90's Country. I'm a musician and play in a country band and it's amazing how people only want to talk about the extremely old country or the brand new country but as a musician, the sounds I hear in 90's Country are unmatched and there's virtually no way possible someone can't like it. If you got tired of Country, I can't blame you because I did too (new country) but tune in to 90's Country and maybe some late 80's and you'll hear the best music that ever came out of Nashville.
