No brainer for me. Mid drive with 2 batteries is a winner. Great video.

Great vid, Kev! As someone with a bad knee I will need a cadence sensor, so it would be great to see a new XP 3.0 step-thru with hydraulic brakes and a larger capacity battery while still keeping it affordable.

I imagine the 3.0 is coming out in the next couple months. I am waiting on that to purchase my first ebike. I’ve had a big ultra heavy scooter, but looking back I wish I had gotten a bike as you couldn’t utilize that scooter like it was a kick scooter, so the practicality of it was contingent on electricity no matter what.

Good review. The XP 2.0 and Xpremium are both great deals. You are right about hub motors working better for people who like to use throttle and mid drive for people who want a more natural pedaling feel. But another difference to keep in mind is mod potential. Doing power upgrades with hub motors is relatively inexpensive and they typically hold up well to a few extra amps. Putting a big amp controller on a mid drive is risky since it has a big gear reduction through a very small set of gears built into the mid drive. Easy to strip those gears out with extra amps. The Xpremium looks like a very nice ride at a great price but for many people I think the XP 2.0 will still be the better choice.

I think I will just buy a 2nd battery for my XP2.0. I am not off-roading much these days, so the extra travel is not too important. $300 to double my current range. Everything else on my current 2.0 works just fine (brakes, shifter, light, etc.).

I really like his comparison. After watching your review of the Premium I thought it was the bike to buy but now, after watching this video, what strikes me is that the Premium weighs more, has less torque, and costs more. I am a rider. I pedal. But, I'm older and want a lot of help on the hills which means I want MORE TORQUE and less weight. I also like the folding fat tire bikes which makes finding a light bike kinda hard. Thanks again for the excellent comparison.

I just ordered a white step-thru xp 2.0 for my wife. (I am a DIY'er (2 mid-drives, 1 front hub) and build my own batteries.) I also think the Xpremium is a wonderful bike. But in terms of performance/utility, aside from the better range (and the fact that I already have two mid-drive bikes (Cyclone 3000w, 52v, and BBS02 750w, 52v), I felt that the XP with a 2nd battery is better way to go beause:
      A) Weight: XPrem: 75lbs w/both,7 lb battery loaded, XP 2.0: 64 lbs with battery, Top speed: same, Range: with an extra $300 Aliexpress 14ah battery, the XP 2.0 should match the range of the XPrem,. People who choose folding bikes usually hope to load the bike into a vehicle - that means both lifting, as well as folded size dimensions). With the XPrem's weight with batteries removed (61lbs) versus batteryless XP2.0 weight (57 lbs), the XP is likely a little easier to lift and load.
      B) Hill Climb: Other Reviews show that the XP 2.0 climbs better than XPRem (which must climb hills with both PAS 5, full throttle, low gear, AND significant pedal effort (to activate the Torque sensor) to do the same climb that XP 2.0 does with less effort and battery usage. (Normally one would expect better hill climbing with a mid-drive, but with the 75 lb weight being pushed by a small 500w mid-drive motor power, the XPrem's hill climb mid-drive advantage has been lost.
      C) Price: XPrem= $1,800, XP 2.0 with extra $300 battery= $1,300).
I plan to build my own packs (either 10.4ah for about $160, or 15ah for about $225, strap to back rack and connect (in parallel) so I will use both packs concurrently.

@@rwo6211 Yeah, for the reasons you stated, my choice to get an XP (3.0, in my case) was an easy one.
I'm more than a little surprised that even with the considerable advantage of being able to make use of the gear reduction (torque multiplication) of the rear cluster, the XPremium can't beat the XP's up a hill. What the hell?
And I really like the fact that, depending on the speed and pedal assist level, I can get the motor to kick in just by gently spinning the crank without having to apply any pressure. That's definitely for me! 😁 👍

I'm a senior but still want to pedal for exercise, and the 75lb weight shouldn't be a problem. Do NOT buy the Lectric mirror package. I bought one for my wife’s 2.0 and you cannot see around your shoulders. Buy a mirror that fits into the end of the hand grip. You will have to cut the end of the grip with a utility knife so the mirror slips into the handlebar tube. It is much better visibility and most of these mirrors give you a wider view similar to car mirrors.

Question is just thought of. Maybe you can ask the guys at Lectric. I'm a big believer in charging to 80% to prolong battery life. On my current ebike, I can do this easily. I can see the battery voltage and and I know how much my charger inputs per hour. So I just use a timer.
Now, you can use this method on the XP 2.0 since you are able to see the voltage. But on the XPremium, how will this work since there are 2 batteries that may have 2 very different voltage levels? Isn't the screen only set up to display voltage for one battery?
How can I know the voltage of each individual battery to then be able to charge by timer?

I think many XP 1 and 2 owners would be disappointed with the XPremium other than its battery range which is as far as I know a first in the eBike market. Mid drives require pedaling and shifting (both up shifting and down shifting) pretty much all the time. I ride with a guy who has a mid drive eBike (I'm on my XP)...and he is constantly shifting that thing while I'm just in one gear practically all the time and letting the motor do its thing (come to think of it I don't think I've shifted my bike in 2 years). I actually LIKE the kick in the pants feeling the hub drive gives...lets me know it can get me out of a jam when I need it. No, from riding with guys with mid drives...Nope, not for me ever.

I am a proud owner of the XP 1 and 2 and I am not disappointed. Hub drive motors are becoming a thing of the past. The only bad thing about a mid-drive system is if you break a chain you can not use the throttle to get you home but a hub drive can. In my years of using pedal bicycles, I never broke the chain with proper maintenance. I had both hub and mid-drive they both have their advantages and disadvantages. If I want. If you really want that kick in the pants feeling you could always get an electric scooter or motorcycle.

i do like the torque of my xp 2 and though when the motor jerks into power when i stop pedaling and then start again is a tad annoying, having the throttle to get it moving along with out having to pedal hard, especially when i forget to change gears, has been quite nice.
though i have thought about getting the premium, there are positives and negatives to both. so i want to thank you for this video in explaining the differences.
one test that i didn't quite hear, maybe the answer is the 2 is better for throttle only acceleration and riding, but.... if you want to get up and going, which is smoother, throttle only wise? i am pretty sure the premium is going to be better at being smooth taking off when pedaling, assuming it's in the right gear. while the 2 will be consistent in it's take off, the premium will vary based on what gear you have it in.
so perhaps, in a test ride, you could show or tell, which one has the better acceleration? maybe give a general rule about what gear you should start out in, perhaps show what the riding experience is when you have it in each gear, well maybe not in the 12 tooth, but some ideas for something to show in your next riding experience video.

I was the first one to pre-order the X-Premium. I upgraded my XP 2.0 order when the pre-order for the new X-Premium was first announced! I upgraded and paid in full for the X-Premium black (with accessories).
Waited since April, they said it will be delivered early June. Waited and waited, then before June, they informed me that it will be delayed till July. Mid July came and there's still no information which is frustrating.
23rd of July, the bike came but it's a wrong color!!! They sent me white!
    After waiting for many months,
I'M VERY DISAPPOINTED THAT THEY SENT ME THE WRONG COLOR!
Now, I don't know how looong will I wait again to have it replaced with the right one!!!
    What's happening LECTRIC???!!!

I had another thought come to mind. Am I correct that, should the chain break while you're riding, the 2.0 with its hub motor can be ridden home using the throttle, while the XPremium, being a mid drive, would be essentially inoperable?

For some reason Kev has not made a comparison between the hub motor ebikes vs mid-drive here. With maybe up to 5x the power going through the same quality drivetrain as far as I can tell the drivetrain will not last as long and it is much more likely to break chains as well. The bushings/pins will wear down much faster and the chain will stretch much quicker and even though we don't have exact data on this yet it goes without saying that a motor delivering its power through the chain, freewheel and crankset is going to wear at a far higher rate compared to a motor system where it works independently of the drivetrain and therefore massively extends drivetrain life. It's probably the biggest advantage of the hub motor over the mid-drive motor as well as the hub motors mechanical simplicity especially direct drive hub motors. I personally think this is the no.1 comparison to be made between the two bikes. It's a powerful mid-drive motor and its a baseline quality drivetrain. I think anyone buying this new ebike should keep a chain wear tool to hand and keep an eye on chain wear. When it wears out maybe consider a higher grade and quality chain. While there are ebike specific chains I don't think they are available in 7 speed as typically 7 speed nowadays is a entry level component and you wouldn't normally get a powerful mid-drive motor matched to a freewheel based drivetrain. While 7 speed chains have thicker plates than higher speed chains I assume the pins and bushings are only going to be a little bit stronger.
Here in the UK we have no legal route to ebikes over 250W and so mid-drive has a hill climbing advantage but in the US or at least some US states you have access to high wattage hub motors for decent hill climbing. Personally I feel for ebikes mainly used on the road clocking up high miles a high power hub motor is a no brainer. Sadly not something I personally can choose. As ever though there are many variables; weight of rider, number of hills, how the bike is ridden, how it is maintained etc that will vary drivetrain wear especially on a mid-drive ebike. No reason you can't have a torque sensor with hub motors either. You can still have the same feel as mid-drive but with the more reliable hub motor with massively extended drivetrain life too. It's just a sort of strain gauge that can be fitted in a bottom bracket.
