- Join me as I hike through gorgeous Snowdonia, Wales and setup camp with a stunning view of Snowdon. It was a bit windier than the forecast predicted ... however, the Hilleberg Enan handled it like a champ. I definitely feel much more confident taking this tent out in windy conditions when guyed out properly. Although, I probably would have slept a bit better in the Soulo, which is a much more wind stable (less flappy) tent! Even though I may not have gotten the best sleep I was treated to a pretty incredible sunrise! Hope you enjoy the video! Great sunrise! That was worth the trip alone. Some of the scaling of the mountain scenes with those high winds looked pretty sketchy to me. Would suggest not showing the wife those sections of the video! Great food prep, which I've come to expect from you. Thanks for the upload first thing in the morning in the States.
The sunrise was definitely worth it! There were definitely a couple spots that I would not have scrambled up if it were raining (the winds were not ideal either) but things always look a bit sketchier on camera than in person. I also always make it a point to have two points of contact when scrambling, making sure each of which can support my entire weight independently (that was for my wife if she reads this 😜). It’s a really pretty area. I always hate that I have to rush home in the mornings on these trips. I just wish it wasn’t such a far drive. It would be nice to take my time. I’ve only been to Australia once and I absolutely LOVED it! I’d love to go back.

Thanks for sharing your video, this video and the one you posted about your trip to Llyn Glas have made me want to explore some of the quieter parts of the Snowdon Massif. I’ve climbed Snowdon so many times but not explored the area. I climbed some of the mountains in the Moelwynion area last month and a great 2 days and 2 nights camping there. By the way, your cooking is so much more inspiring than most of the cooking I do myself or watch
Everyone definitely has to do Snowdon at least once but after that I have personally avoided it. Just too many people. I actually find some of the surrounding peaks even prettier! I really need to start exploring the Moelwynion range. How did you like it? I’m assuming it’s less crowded which sounds ideal. Glad you like the cooking! It’s a fun challenge in a tent and it’s always nice to eat well! Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment!

I’m deffo putting Wales on my list of wild camping places for next year!
This year I’ve done several multi-night adventures in both the Lakes, and on Dartmoor.
I also need to get myself up to Scotland as well next year..
I tend not to venture out as far during the winter months, an hour or so’s drive is more than enough when it starts to get dark early (and cold) in the evenings.

It also becomes much more difficult for me to travel to Wales or the Lakes in the winter as when I arrive there is very little time left in the day to hike in and find a campsite. You have inspired me to get all the gear I need , I spent my first night solo camping on Arenig Fawr in Snowdonia national park,
It was scary. I set up camp then had a look at this plaque that was 50 feet from camp, I was actually set up right on a ww2 plane crash site where 8 American airmen in a Flying Fortress died, there were still small bits of the wreckage around camp,
It was a scary night, the wind smashed me to,I survived though,
My heart was in my mouth watching this that look’s really sketchy 😂, I really like the videos of yours. How do you make sure your tent doesn’t collapse and all the guy lines come out in that high wind that’s what happened to me at 1am , it was a horrific experience, I’m sure you may get a laugh out of this one.
Well, after settling down after my sausage and instant mash ( plus a lot of chocolate and a cheecy can of Guinness or 2) I decided to catch the last of the sunset atop of this rather huge mountain.The weather was fine and was so all that day, as a very inexperienced camper I very stupidly pitched my tent with very little shelter from the element’s.
An hour or so after the sun had set the wind had picked up, a guy line came loose so I went to fix it and got back in. With being on top of this beast of rock I naively thought it would be ok when securing my tent pegs into not much at all because it’s really rocky and with the weather being fine at the time.
By 12 pm the wind had picked up to I’d say around 50/60 mph and the visibility due to to sudden arrival of cloud had vanished.
Next all my guy lines give way and I’m nearly blown right off that thing. It was completely horrifying. In a hysteric panic I took the poles out and wrapped myself up with all my gear to. no chance of resecuring in that.
It was so dark and being unfamiliar with this mountain not to mention the rather sheer drops I saw on the way up I waited for sunrise . And commence one of the worst nights of my life. I was wrapped up in my tent up there in storm conditions for more than 6 hours.
Finally the sky was light enough to allow an attempt to salvation, as I egress this warped twisted mess I do my best to quickly pack up but oops there goes my tent to the wind , gone into the thick mist full of rain rushing by, I managed to salvage everything else, sleeping bag , mat all the electrical stuff though.
As I looked up I quickly realised that I couldn’t see any route down and the wind was taking me off my feet almost, and so that’s when my fear was compounded. I didn’t fancy a broken leg or worse.
I had to find refuse from the weather, that there where the plaque for the poor airmen has a stone enclosure so I headed for that which was 50 foot away when I pitched, I was abit disoriented but I eventually found it, jeez it was a relief to be out of the wind and rain abit.
I gathered my thoughts and strength as I hadn’t slept one second and then I made my attempt,
I didn’t get far before I realised I was in some serious trouble in this weather, I could be walking of a cliff or get blown off one,
I decided to head back to the stone monument when I came to an impass , a kind of ridge where the wind speed there was insane 90 plus ,
I bit the bullet and called mountain rescue, after about an hour of waiting what appeared to be a Yeti emerging through this torrent of horrendous weather in front of me shouting ‘Hello! ‘ came the farmer ,which the mountain rescue sent up who they notified and who’s land it is.
He had a rather upset look in his face to begin with, but after my much apologies and much respect and appreciation I think he actually grew to like me because half was down he bent down and stood up with a piece of quart’s, gave it to me and said ‘so you don’t forget” hahaha.
Anyway we ended up just below the cloud line after what seemed a really sketchy path down to find a quad bike ready to take me the rest of the way down the mountain. Even the farmer got abit lost at one point on that quad as it all looks the same on some parts of that terrain.
We made it back to an awaiting troop of mountain rescue. A nice rescue woman Gave me a granade protein bar drove me to my car with 2 other mountain guys , all while be too nice to me. There were more mountain rescue people at my car too. I felt terribly embarrassed and apologised whole heartedly to them. I got in at home that day and just Slept with many lessons about wild camping learned. It’s not put me off, my new tents coming tomorrow. apparently the farmer used to be a mountain rescue man himself to, I guess that’s why he volunteered come in that weather regardless of it being his land.
Wow that’s a crazy story. I don’t even know where to began. I guess first and foremost I am really glad to hear that you are ok! Snowdonia is one heck of a place to spend your first night solo camping. The weather is incredibly unpredictable and well often downright crazy. Were high winds forecast before you set off for your camp? I often use multiple weather apps and forecast models before heading out and even then the weather has turned on me. Really important to try to pick a day with favorable conditions. Every time I have camped in Snowdonia the weather forecasts and current wind conditions always are top priority when choosing a safe place to pitch the tent. I often find it very helpful to look up the wind direction as well to help pitch your tent so that it will be as aerodynamic as possible, helping to put as little strain on the tent as you can. I also typically bring the most wind stable tents I own even when wind is not in the forecast. You asked how I ensure the guy lines stay anchored. I typically will find a spot with relatively solid ground and will place stones on each peg or use specialized pegs that are designed to dig deeper into the ground when they are under high tension. You made the right call sticking with your tent after it failed. Nothing more dangerous than trying to get down in those conditions in the dark! Again really glad you are ok! Talk about getting thrown into the deep end! Hope your next trip is much better. All the best

That time on one of your videos when you camped on that little peninsula near that little village on the coast, I watched that the day I got home in bed and it made me feel abit better sorry lol, my tent failing was what made it much worse though that night.
Anyway I’m glad for the experience and being thrown in the deep end, I did pretty much everything wrong so I’ll never make them mistakes again and underestimate the mountain or the weather.

@@nathankennedy2136 yeah that coastal camp was rough 😂. After that trip I started also using a weather app called windy.app. You can select a specific location you were thinking about camping and actually look at the wind direction and speed and how it will change over the course of the time you are planning to be at a particular site. Highly recommend it! You can also see multiple forecast models. I will normally select the extreme one to see the worst case scenario.

I'm 77 years old, weigh 109# (49.44kg) & am 5'3" (160cm); I have plenty of room inside any & all tents.
I'm going to email Hilleberg after watching this video. I'm curious, & will be asking Hilleberg if they recommend using separate stakes for each of the 2 additional tie out points at both ends, they way you did in this video, for a total of 3 stakes at both ends, OR using just one stake & connecting the 2 additional guyout lines to ONE stake, at each end. I vacillated back in forth on this matter in practice, but in actual hikes, I don't additional stakes, just additional guyout lines.
I'll let you know what they say.
I have the Enan Footprint permanently attached to my Enan which I think adds some additional structural support to the entire tent. The Footprint is the only thing that connects all 6 points of the tent outer fabric to one piece of material/Footprint on the ground.

It’s a fantastic tent! I’m 5’10” and feel I have plenty of room also once inside 👍. The vestibule is also glorious! Honestly it’s so light I don’t mind using the additional ultralight stakes but I will be curious to see what they say in their response. Like the Enan, I also have the footprints permanently attached to my Soulo and Nammatj. It’s probably one of my favorite features! I really like always having a clean, dry spot to sit or place my gear when the weather is particularly nasty out. And as you mentioned it’s great having everything connected. It’s also so nice to be able to erect the ground sheet along with the outer/inner of the tent all at once. Really wish more tent manufacturers designed tents like this. Once we moved overseas, I definitely started to see more tents that do this, but never really did when I lived in the US. It’s hard to go back to attaching a ground sheet and fly separately when pitching a tent. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on another one of my videos! All the best.

Out of curiousity, on a trip like this, what does your pack weight typically come out to, including food and water? Amazing video. I love seeing you share these experiences with us!
This trip was a while back so I wouldn’t be able to give you an exact weight but I’m using my lightweight tent so I would say roughly 29-31lbs total. Even though I didn’t use it I think I brought the drone on this trip so maybe a little more. That also doesn’t include the camera and tripod which I am carrying in my hand while hiking. I try to stay under the 20% rule for this type of trip where I will need to do some scrambling. I typically don’t weigh my bag anymore though. Based on the kit I am bring I just know whether or not it will be comfortable while hiking 👍. Appreciate the comment!
Fab trip and views, been a long time since I did that one winter years ago via crib Goch I remember it being somewhat icy and somebody falling off it a month or so before, did concentrate my mind.

Very cool hike/climb! As you suggested - Is it even worth looking at the forecast regarding equipment to take into Wales/Lakes/Scotland high country?
I definitely think so. I start looking at the forecast up to a week before I plan to camp. I use multiple weather apps and pay close attention to wind speed and direction forecasts for the elevation I am planning to camp. I always assume I can get rained on so I bring waterproofs and don’t worry too much about rain. Just keep in mind no matter what the forecast says it can always be worse more often than not. The forecast will then typically determine which tent I will bring. Appreciate the comment!

Thanks Paul! There were definitely a few bits which were a decent scramble but I think it always looks worse on camera than it actually is. For cooking I was using the jetboil minimo. That stove in combination with the jetboil summit skillet is probably one of my favorite cooking combos aside from the trangia 27. ATB

Lovely sunrise! When I camped there I lugged 3kg of water up from Penypass as I didn’t fancy using static water from a pond. But maybe it’s ok 🤔.
Thanks! Yeah not ideal but this area gets so much precipitation I don’t worry too much about it. Definitely not the worst I’ve had and my filter has yet to fail me 🤞. It normally gets boiled as well. Appreciate you taking the time to comment! ATB
@@GoingSoloOutdoors thanks. I had a big instant tummy/gut upset after using water from pond but it did have Canada Geese there and I don’t think I boiled it, filter only. Since then I’ve been ultra cautious!

I had a question about one of your other videos. You used the trangia in the hilleberg, do you worry about it burning through the tent? I have one myself and they get pretty hot!
Really appreciate the comment! An alcohol stove is probably the least safe thing to use in a tent. However, If I do use it I feel fairly confident using it in the trangia 27 kit. When the burner is sitting in the lower half of the wind shield it is very stable so I don’t worry about knocking it over. It also holds the burner a couple inches off the ground so I don’t worry about the heat from the base of the burner harming anything. Thanks again for watching my videos! All the best!
@@GoingSoloOutdoors Really helpful, thanks! I don't have the kit at the moment, just the Trangia stove with a little metal X bracket to provide a little space between the Trangia and the pan. Definitely on my gear list though, I guess from your pack size it fits down reasonably small. I do have the Jetboil as well but I need to buy the pan!
@@strangertongues The jetboil skillet is awesome! The trangia 27 set is reasonably small considering it fits a pan, two bowls, a kettle, the transgia and my cutting board. It’s like a mini kitchen.

Hi Loved the video👍🏻When using your camera 📸on a tripod get a bungee cord and fasten it in between the legs then to a tent peg in the the ground. My help to stop it blowing over. Cheers Jc.
Not a bad idea. The simpler solution I’ve used since is just spreading the tripod legs out wider to their next setting. It gives it a much wider and stabler base 👍. At the time I didn’t even realize my tripod could do that but it has since prevented it blowing over in strong winds. Appreciate the comment! ATB

Hi there how do you find the Enan? Would you trust it in high winds? Considering Enan v Akto myself, interested to hear your thoughts. Great videos.
I really love the Enan. I would comfortably take it out in winds up to 35mph but anything above that I would just rather bring my Soulo. If you’re looking for a lightweight four season tent the Akto is nice but I’d go with a Soulo over an Akto. I personally prefer the center pole of the Enan to the Akto as it keeps the fabric off your face in winds. Either way both are great tents so you can’t go wrong! Thanks for watching!
In strong winds I find an extra guy line either side of the pole and lined out in a V makes a big difference to stability. Similarly I have a second guyline to make a V permanently fixed to the end poles .

Thanks! 😆 definitely not a five star cook! I was a biomedical engineer turned high school science teacher. I actually worked as a cook briefly when I started my teaching career but the long late hours kind of took the joy out of cooking. So I never pursued that passion, so yeah, I’m just a guy who likes to cook for his family and while camping, with ridiculously small cooking gear 👍. Appreciate you taking the time to comment. You apparently have several Hildeberg tents. Do you have a favorite? I have been looking at several of them. I live in NH, want a tent for two and altjouhh I may not ise it in the winter, if I am only going to purchase one I would like it to be a red label or black label. High winds are never fun. I have been focusing on the Nammatj and the Jannu. I really need to watch the weight issue. Do you have a favorite all around Hildeberg? One of the reasons I follow you is I like all the equipment that you use and it is all the same stuff I lean toward. Money is not an issue, I like quality products that keep me safe.
You can’t go wrong with a Hilleberg 👍. They are not cheap but the quality and reliability is far better than other tents I have used. It’s very hard to pick a personal favorite. They all have their different use case. If you are looking for a two person the Nammatj or the Allak would both be fantastic options. The Jannu is incredible but designed for winter alpine conditions in harsh weather. As a result, it’s not going to be as roomy as the Nammatj or Allak. Which are both roomy enough for two but the Allak may provide a bit more versatility because it is free standing, it has many venting options, and two vestibules. It does weigh more than the Nammatj though. Hope that helps 😀

I don’t disagree that the MSR stand is more stable 👍. The MSR stand is made in Taiwan btw, not sayin that’s a bad thing. The jetboil stand that fits in the lid works just fine and is always there. Until it breaks I don’t feel the need to upgrade it but if it does I would or definitely pick up one of these stands! ATB

Did you wish you had brought your Soulo?
It was nice to have the lower weight for this hike. The Enan was able to handle the wind well it was just a bit noisy as it’s a bit smaller inside.
Wild goats in Wales?!
Yep in Snowdonia there are quiet a few areas where you will see many Welsh mountain goats roaming freely 👍

@@frednorman1 I imagine there is a combination of both. And some interbreeding that has taken place over time with domestic goats. I do believe there is an actual goat that is native to the British Isles … or at least it was introduced a few thousand years ago. I don’t remember what the goats looked like in this particular video but if they’re the ones in snowdonia, they may be of this native breed not sure.
Enan 3 season. So no good in winter?
If there is no falling snow I think you could definitely use it in winter. Although with the mesh panels at the ends of the tent you may definitely get a cold draft inside 👍

@@BOTG_Adventures I have not but it’s extremely popular 👍. It has the option to zip the inner to block out any drafts and it has the top ventilation. Still very light as well for a 4 season shelter.
